Hawaiian Gardens Council approves concept plans for permanent casino facility By Jerry Bernstein
Rendering of the proposed new Hawaiian Gardens Casino which will encompass approximately 182,000 sq. ft. of floor area adding approximately 90 more card tables for a total 250.
Celebrating its 13th year of operation, the Hawaiian Gardens Casino [Card Club] received approval from the city council to proceed with plans to replace the existing temporary casino structure with a permananent facility. The new structure will have a tropical plantation theme, with the building designed with plantation-style architecture. The building will be built with steel beams and concrete and finished with a stucco exterior. The landscaping will include Palm trees, shrubbery and beautiful plots of blooming flowers. Estimated cost of the new facility is between $ 44 and $45 million. Adolph Pereira, with JCJ Architecture of San Diego, told the council he was asking approval of conceptual plans which are currently being reviewed by the Community Development Department. He said the proposed

Many times it is difficult to describe a city concerning its residents and the community as a whole. On Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m. there was no hesitation in the display of pride residents have of their city. The occasion was the city’s 50th Anniversary Time Capsule Celebration. Artesia residents turned out at Old Fire Station #30 Museum located on 187th Street and Corby Avenue for the celebration. Young and old were present. The Time Capsule was constructed by Prescott Hardware & Sheet Metal Works on Artesia Boulevard and donated to the Artesia Historical Society. Inside the capsule were mementos of the city’s first 50 years. Included were videos, historical documents, pictures etc. The capsule will be on view at the Old Fire Station #30 Museum that is currently undergoing a major renovation. Rotary Club welcomes representative from sister club in Mexico
Neighbors from the 13500 block of Ashworth Place. Also in attendance were Council Member Carol Chen, and Community Safety Committee Member Chuong Vo (Sixth from the left, second row) A neighborhood watch program in Cerritos has taken on a higher level of safety. The Ashworth Place cul-de-sac street on the east side of Cerritos has revived this old concept of community responsibility back into the 21st century. Community Safety Committee Member Chuong Vo started up a neighborhood watch program after being victimized by burglars and transformed a quiet small street into a warm family of residences who watches out for each other. Watch meetings consist of training fellow neighbors to deter crime and to detect suspicious activity. The neighborhood also developed a website for the residences to communicate, blog, share photos, and plan future events. sac, however with the regular block parties (unheard of now a-days in Cerritos) the neighborhood has come together to protect and preserve the safety of all its residences. A recent block party on Dec. 19, 2009 brought out all ages from grandparents to a two month old baby. The street was lined with trees wrapped in foil, red ribbons, and bows. Homes were decorated in Christmas lights, and violin players entertained the residences with Christmas Music as neighbors and friends stood around a fire and kids roasted marsh mellows. It was truly Christmas for everyone in attendance. This neighborhood is a true success for the neighborhood watch program. Hopefully this will inspire others to start up a neighborhood watch program in their area.
Lydia Estrada, Tourist Coordinator from Jamay Mexico, receiving plaque from President Manu Patel and Mayor Tony Lima. The Rotary Club of Artesia-Cerritos hosted Lydia Estrada visiting from Jamay Mexico. Jamay is a small city of about 18,000 people about 60 miles east of Guadalajara. The City of Artesia has had a sister city relationship with Jamay for about 5 years. Out of that relationship, a sister club relationship with the Jamay Rotary Club is being developed. Lydia is a tourist coordinator for the city of Jamay. She has been instrumental in promoting these relationships at the Jamay City and Rotary Club levels. Pete Ochoa, an active member in our club, is originally from Jamay. He also plays an active role in these relationships. Many
people originally from Jamay are now living in nearby surrounding communities. Ms. Estrada visited the Rotary Club on Monday, January 5th, where she received a plaque for her efforts from Rotary President Manu Patel and Artesia Mayor Tony Lima (also an active Rotary member). Plans are being made for future deepening of our ties, including educational, health-related, and cultural exchanges. The Rotary Club is dedicated to serving the local community and promoting international relations. For more information on the Rotary, contact Dr. Steve Sherman at 562 926-1097.

69-Year-old gets his degree and eyes further education NORWALK, Calif. - January 11, 2010 - Stubbornness sometimes can be good. Determined to finish what he started when he was 18, Michael Esposito quit being a business owner and came back to Cerritos College after nearly 50 years. His parents started a meat market in WhitMichael Espisito tier in 1947 when he was seven. Esposito worked there everyday while attending schooluntil his parents sold the store in 1958. At Whittier High School, he was a good student, an accomplished athlete and college-bound, until life got in the way. He started working right out of high school, for San Antonio Construction Company in Artesia, in 1958, the year his mother married the owner of the company.
Esposito wanted to go to college but his mother discouraged him, because his labor was needed at San Antonio. She explained that, “Your father will teach you everything you need to know. No need for college!” However, “my passion for education has never left me,” said Esposito. One day in 1959, Esposito was very surprised by a call from Joe Incorvia, who was his wrestling coach in high school. Incorvia had moved to Cerritos College from Whittier High to start a wrestling team. With help of Incorvia, Esposito started taking evening classes at Cerritos College where he became one of the first ten wrestlers to letter at Cerritos in the 1959-60 school year. His college career ended for a long time after 1966. In 1966 he went to Mt. San Antonio College for one semester, but work again got in the way of college. He obtained a B-1 contractor’s license for California in 1975. A year later he earned a contractor’s license for Nevada. By this time at San Antonio he was the construction superintendent. The company had grown and he did all the firing and
hiring. In 1977 at the age of 37, Esposito bought the company and specialized in wood frame storage buildings all over California. Here is one episode shows that he remained a keen learner even after he became a busy business owner. While working on a large job in Southern California, he went back to Cerritos College in 2003-04. He earned nine units before work took him north again. One must be wondering by now, “Why did he have to keep coming back to Cerritos College? Joe Incorvia was a big factor. Coach Joe was a big influence in his life – he introduced Esposito to wrestling in high school and taught him the importance of higher education. To show Joe that he completed what he started 49 years ago, it had to be Cerritos College. He came back to Cerritos College in summer 2009 to finish his “job.” In fall 2009 after 49 years, he finally earned his A.A. in history from Cerritos College, where he started so long ago. What next? 69-year-old Esposito smiled and said “I want to be a history teacher, if I live long enough!”

Publisher's Rant Rush the Corporate Liar
On his radio show (Jan 13) Rush said that Obama was trying to draw attention from his “dismal failure” to stop job losses, stop foreclosures, and stop the economic slide (like it was Obama's fault) by going after the banks' bonus programs. He also accused Obama of using the tragic events in Haiti as pandering to the black and "light skinned" vote. This is the reason I wrote an editorial on this guy and others (Beck, Hannity) a few months ago; that they must go or be censured, they could care less about the little guy, and they are bad for the country. Why? Because they will lie to further their own interests and that of the corporations that pay them. A sampling of truth...

Following is a report from the Council of Economic Advisors for the fourth quarter, solidifying my assertion about these right wing fanatical radio show hosts. January 13, 2010: As part of the unprecedented accountability and transparency provisions included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) was charged with providing to Congress quarterly reports on the effects of the Recovery Act on overall economic activity, and on employment in particular. In this second report, we provide an assessment of the effects of the Act through the fourth quarter of 2009. As of the end of December 2009, $263.3 billion of the original $787 billion, or roughly one-third of the total, has been outlayed or gone to American households and businesses in the form of tax reductions. An additional $149.7 billion has been obligated for projects and activities, which means that the money is available to recipients once they make expenditures. Following implementation of the ARRA, the trajectory of the economy changed materially toward moderating output decline and job loss. Indeed, real GDP began rising in the third quarter of 2009, and job losses in the fourth quarter were one-tenth their size in the first quarter. The decomposition of the GDP and employment change by component or sector suggests that the ARRA has played a key role in this change of trajectory. The two CEA methods of estimating the impact of the fiscal stimulus suggest that the ARRA added between 2 and 3 percentage points to real GDP growth in the second quarter of 2009; between 3 and 4 percentage points in the third quarter; and between 1½ and 3 percentage points in the fourth quarter. These estimates are broadly similar to those of a wide range of other analysts. For the third quarter of 2009, we now have direct reports on jobs created or saved from a subset of recipients of ARRA funds. These reports identify 640,000 jobs that would not have existed but for the Recovery Act. This is a dismal failure?.... only if you are a liar.

Ellsies are out and Cerritos is in By Glen Creason Despite lowered-low expectations and budgets squeezed to white-knuckle degrees across the land, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts kept a stiff upper cultural lip and continued the excellence that has marked the theater for the past 17 years. It was a year of shorter seasons and sometimes-smaller crowds but that shant deter the Ellsie Awards from bestowing honors on those who shone above the rest this year at the glittering hall in dear Cerritos. While 2009 might qualify as one of the worst years in memory for the state of the economy the local populace still found time to seek out fine entertainment and as they came so did I, not as much as before but certainly enjoying what I did see as much as ever. I hope the spanking new 2010 has as much to offer as good old 09. It was a year of great losses and gains on the international, national and local scenes. The good news was that the wondrous publicist Lori Levine-Yonan returned from her lengthy sabbatical and picked up the superlatives where she left off. A tip of the ink-stained brim to Kim Bui who filled in for Lori like a true professional and kept the bar set at excellent during her tenure. Also, a very sad farewell to friend Faith Lazzari who takes a well-deserved retirement but her departure leaves us with a great sadness when passing the door to the hospitality room where her smile brightened every night at the Center. The best little theater in the world stays that way thanks to the brilliant choices that balance popular with cutting edge entertainments, evidenced by the superb Sierra Nights series put together by Michael Wolf, a consummate professional. Kudos to other top-notch pros like house manager Alan Strickland, hospitality supervisor India Holloway and Yeoman Tony Erdelji who make the concerts hum beautifully. Once more I bow toward the greatest box office staff in the world. This team continues to provide service par-excellence lead by Dianne Cheney with the solid one-two punch of Nate Chavez and Cristopher Laroco who somehow inspire their crews to be patient and helpful in the sometimes stressful situations, including lending ditzy reviewers writing utensils and informing them that their tickets were for the previous night. Once again the entire operation is nowheresville without the fantastic technical staff lead by Tom Hamilton with James King and Jeff Thielke acting as chief lieutenants in this weekly pursuit of perfection. In the entire year I did not see one missed cue or the slightest flaw in any house those good men prepared. There is the sad realization of the passing of one of the nice guys at Cerritos in the person of Don Hayes who left for paradise before we could say goodbye. Here are the winners of the 2009
Ellsies: E-Dance: the hardest choice since this was an exceptional year for small dance shows at the Center with absolutely stunning performances from Liss Fain Dance in November and Luna Negra Dance in April. Both companies provided the very best kind of entertainment that inspired and elevated the audience to a higher plain. “Fifteen Heterosexual Duets” in the Liss Fain show was wonderful and “Batacuda Fantastica” from Luna Negra did more in fifteen minutes than most performances can achieve in an evening. E-Classical: the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra was terrific in every piece they attempted, especially the "Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra" by Bach that featured the stunning interplay of the two violinists Melissa White and the charismatic Elena Urioste. Miss Urioste was certainly the newcomer of the year at Cerritos for this season. E-Holiday: Even though Dave Koz and the Smooth Xmas show gave them a run for it the Irish Tenors take home the Christmas presents for their show that was begun with the best in a fabulous reading of “Be Thou My Vision” that had each man complimenting the other with their tenor beauty. E-Culture: in a disappointingly attended but supremely polished chorale concert the San Francisco Girls Chorus demonstrated why this kind of music is so incredible to hear live. Every note they touched was beautiful but none as otherworldly as “Deep River” at the finish of a very special matinee. E-Rock: easily won by the Bangles who really gave us a rambunctious and fresh concert in October with sexy showmanship and very solid rock and roll. Playing pop the way it sounds best, the ladies took good ones like “If She Knew What She Wants” and made the place glow with musical joy. E-Eye Candy: A special award to the show with the greatest eye appeal that goes to “Kool and the Gang” that had a good groove going for the rather unbelievable amount of hot women rushing the stage and dancing with reckless abandon. E-R&B- The Temptations had every reason to just mail one in since they have the name and the repertoire but instead the had the packed house standing by the second bass line and dancing for the duration, especially lead by lead singer Bruce “Big Sexy” Williamson. E-Jazz- Mingus Big Band despite a smaller than I could believe crowd, those faithful were shown jazz in its purest form as each man in the ensemble showed skills that every kid should study. “Tensions” by the band was superb and Lauren Sevian’s “Moanin’” was memorable. E-World- Taiko X2 On Ensemble and Kenny Endo- the group is getting better and they were pretty great to begin with the last visit to the hall. The entire show was one ear opening piece after another but the sweet “After the Rain” was everything the title hints at. E-Classic Rock- Dave Mason- dem-

Ying Quartet brings the strings to life at Cerritos By Glen Creason I have a young friend, formerly a bassist in a cow-punk band who knows music from top to bottom but cannot connect to Classical composition because she finds it too staid. If only she could have taken in the concert on Friday of the Ying Quartet at the Performing Arts Center that contained all the ingredients of propriety including composers Beethoven, Schumann, and Janacek played by two violins, a cello and a viola (a string quartet!) However, while the music was centuries old and the string quartet is obviously a smaller sound than an orchestra the Ying Quartet filled the hall with emotion and demonstrated playing so passionate you hardly saw a staid seam showing. There was nothing stuffy about this concert and often the emotional expressions caused the players to practically elevate out of their chairs.

The program was chosen to exhibit romantic expressions and the group’s spirited performance helped bring this theme to vivid life. Schumann’s Quartet in A Major, Opus 41, no. 3 was written for his beloved wife Clara and the opening movement literally calls her name with the dreamy lead violin repeating the phrase just as one smitten might call out their love. The remaining three movements ranged from tenderness to a deeply romantic yearning that the composer felt for his young bride. The final “allegro” was joyful, celebratory which was expressed perfectly with the strings all standing together like such a union. The second piece by Leos Janacek, Quartet no. 2, “Intimate Letters”, again emoted such romantic striving but in this case the object of the composer’s ardor was unreachable and the love was sadly unrequited. Thus the music has much more discord, some tortured yearning, uncertainty and strife. The pieces here

Ouch!!! Mouth sores Everyone has experienced mouth sores in their lifetime. Fortunately, the tissues of the mouth quickly heal and the lesions disappear. Let me briefly review the types of lesions that can occur and why you should be concerned. Traumatic lesions such as lip and cheek biting, pizza burns, and gum scrapes are painful but short lived. The lesions are tender for about a week then heal over in the second week. During this time it is important not to re-injure the site and to avoid acid or astringent foods. Rinsing with warm water with a pinch of salt helps soothe and cleanse the wound. Topical use of benzocaine ointments (i.e. Orajel or Zilactin) gives temporary relief during the painful phase. Traumatic wounds may become ulcerated. Ulcers are open wounds that

have become infected. They may have a white border with a yellowish membrane over the middle. They are usually painful. Rinsing with prescription chlorhexidine to reduce the microbes in the ulcer and applying topical ointments are effective and will speed up recovery. Blistering and sloughing are often associated with certain diseases. If some damage occurs to a component of the oral mucosa the layers can separate. This separation results in a blister. When a blister ruptures sloughing will occur and the area becomes ulcerated. These lesions may require topical or ingested steroids. Swellings and growths can be the result of infections, reactions to a chronic stimulus, or a new unwanted growth (tumor). Your dentist should check these enlargements. Infections will usually respond to antibiotics and treatment or removal of the source of the infection. New rapid growths in the mouth should be evaluated to determine if it is serious or benign. Only a microscopic analysis can tell the nature of the growth so biopsies are often performed and the growth monitored. Pigmented lesions are usually dark. A pigmented lesion may be the result of a small fragment of old filling that got trapped in the gums or cheek or from naturally occurring melanin pigmentation or blood vessels. These lesions should be checked. They can be an innocent convolution of capillaries or be a sign of a malignant melanoma or sarcoma. An oral lesion can appear white due to the thickening of the keratin layer of the mouth (similar to a skin scab turning white when it is wet). The white patch (leukoplakia) will not rub off and it is difficult to predict its biology. Some form of biopsy is needed to determine malignancy. A white patch can remain the same or change over time and should be monitored by your dentist. Red lesions indicate a thinner keratin layer and may often have a burning discomfort. Red lesions associated with smoking are of great concern and all should be examined for pre-malignancy. Your dental office will provide an annual oral cancer exam. Some practitioners are utilizing specially developed cancer screening tests to “see” through to the deeper layers of the mouth. These screens are very accurate and will give peace of mind that everything is okay for now. For answers to your dental questions, contact Douglas Urban, D.D.S. New law makes it easier to save on prescription drug costs
Under a new law, more Medicare beneficiaries could qualify for Extra Help with their Medicare prescription drug plan costs because some things no longer count as income and resources. The Extra Help is estimated to be worth an average of $3,900 per year. To qualify for the Extra Help, a person must be on Medicare, have limited income and resources, and reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. To qualify for extra help, people must meet certain resource and income limits. The new Medicare law eases those requirements in two ways. First, it eliminates the cash value of life insurance from counting as a resource. Second, it eliminates the assistance people receive from others to pay for household expenses, such as food, rent, mortgage or utilities, from counting as income. There also is another important “twist” in the law. The application for extra help can now start the application process for Medicare
Savings Programs -- state programs that provide help with other Medicare costs. These programs help pay Medicare Part B (medical insurance) premiums. For some people, the Medicare Savings Programs also pay Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) premiums, if any, and Part A and B deductibles and co-payments. Who can get Extra Help? Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. Some people with limited income and resources are eligible for Extra Help to pay for the costs–monthly premiums, a n nual deductibles, and prescription copayments–related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra Help: * You must reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. * Your resources must be limited to $12,510 for an individual or $25,010 for a married couple living together. La Palma doctor praised by residents By Larry Caballero Long-time resident and community activist Ulla Herman could talk for hours about her many accomplishments and good deeds as a Meals on Wheels driver, or her work for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, or her philanthropy. Yet the wife of City Councilmember Larry Herman would rather talk about La Palma’s Urgent & Family Care Dr. Mahmunir Shah. “She is such Dr. Mahmunir Shah a caring person and the love she shows for her patients is wonderful.” La Palma Kiwanis President Abe Waheed also praises Dr. Shah as a very special person who loves what she does. “We are very lucky to have her practicing medicine in our city.” Shah was born in Quetta, Pakistan, and lived there with her family until they moved to a larger city, Karachi, when she was three. At age 7, the family moved to England where she learned “British English” along with Farsi (Persian), her first language. Both parents were born in Iran. Her first teachers were nuns at the St. Jesus and Mary Convent in Karachi. To this day, she loves reading the Bible, and “I follow the Ten Commandments to a tee.” She attributes the compassion she shows her patients to the Christian teaching she received as a child. She attended the Dow Medical College in Karachi, where there were only
nine openings for women, and she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1973. Her residency was Internal Medicine, and she contemplated specializing in thoracic or open-heart surgery while conducting clinical trials on hypertension. In 1976, she migrated to the United States and passed her entry exam to be a doctor. For ten years, she was an assistant surgeon at Sacred Heart Hospital in Norristown, Pennsylvania. When she and her husband moved to California in 1986, she had to pass both the written and oral exams in order to practice internal medicine. She opened a practice in Cypress in 1990 as an urgent care physician, but became interested in the services of a traveling clinic that traveled throughout Southern California specializing in workers compensation and personal injuries. She decided to open a medical office in La Palma in 2007 and now serves more

Memorial Service for Sgt. Heede of the 1st CEB (Combat Engineer Battalion)
On January 6, 2010 members of the Friends of the 1st CEB were invited to attend the official USMC Memorial Service at Camp Pendleton for Sgt. Heede who was killed in action last July 13th in Afghanistan. This was done back at Camp Pendleton once the 1st CEB had returned from deployment so that his mother Ms. Gloria Crothers could be present as it was held with full military honors. Since 9/11 many members of the 1st CEB have given their lives for freedom and the fight against terrorism and to protect the American way of life. It was an honor as a member of the Friends of 1st CEB along with Dorothy Owens, Tanya Pham, Tom Tislow and his wife Laura and son Tommy Jr. to be present and pay homage to this young Marine. We were honored Americans to bear witness to almost 700 Marines and Sailors in
full formation along with senior officers, including General Officers, family and invited guests. By all accounts Sgt. Heede was an awesome young man and one of America's best of which the Marine Corps can be proud, as are we all. In the audience was one very special guest who has felt the full burden of his sacrifice, his mother Ms. Gloria Crothers who traveled from Maryland. Although saddened, she was the proudest of mothers. The ceremony included the presentation of his boots, helmet, rifle and dog tags by members of his unit on a special Memorial wooden stand, as some of us may have seen on television, but there is nothing like the impact of seeing it before ones eyes! The ceremony included the USMC Color Guard, the National Anthem, prayers, rifle salute, performance by the Ceremonial USMC Bag Pipers along with the playing of Taps, the pro-

Q. A.
Call (714) 523-4327 I was told that I have nerve deafness and that hearing aids would not help me. Is this true?
Many people have been told this over the years, but it is not necessarily true. The majority of people who have “nerve deafness,” or sensorineural hearing loss, improve their hearing through the use of hearing aids. There is no medicine or surgery to repair the inner ear, so these hearing impaired individuals need amplification systems to hear their loved ones. Improvements in computer-chip technology have also made hearing aid systems and assistive listening devices (ALDs) much more advanced than years ago. They are available now to make your life, and those of your loved ones, much easier.

Results announced for the Orange County Fairgrounds public auction Costa Mesa, Calif. - Results from the Orange County Fairground auction held in Costa Mesa earlier today are in and the state will now consider the highest bid of $56.5 million from Dwight Manly and Steve Craig in conjunction with the Craig Realty Group of Newport Beach. DGS officials will consider accepting Craig Realty Group's high bid in the coming weeks and may execute a contract by the spring. Sealed bids that had been submitted by January 11 were opened during today's auction and bidders were then given the opportunity to raise their offers. At the conclusion of the auction, the final competing offers from the seven bidders
were as follows: - Craig Realty Group - $56.5 million - Advanced Real Estate Services, Inc. - $56 million - Facilities Management West, Inc. - $55 million - Anaheim Sports Holdings, LLC - $20 million - Joint bid (via MOU) County of Orange and City of Costa Mesa - $$6.5 million - Forde & Mollrich, Inc. - $2 million - Tel Phil Enterprises, Inc. - $1,000 The original sealed bids that were opened during today's auction are available on the DGS Web site along with all other information and documents related to the sale. Visit www.dgs.ca.gov/OCFair. Governor Schwarzenegger authorized the sale of the 150-acre property July 24, 2009, when he signed into law a sweeping plan that authorized DGS to change how it manages state real estate, thus allowing the sale of state-owned property to help shore up the state's finances.

E-Opera- this was a year for the greatest vocal art form and the Teatro L’Irico D’Europa brought the huge and demanding “Aida” to the Cerritos boards for a full night of singing and history bending intrigue lead by tenor Gabriel Gonzalez. E-Musical- this year with a young musical performing companion we judged the staging of “Chicago” to be the winner of the drama Ellsie. Jeff McCarthy as Billy Flynn was exceptional in all ways as were the principal ladies Michelle DeJean and Terra C. MacLeod as Roxy and Velma. E-Show of the Year- the voting was close on the gonfalon of Performing Arts but the golden statue goes to “The Keys to New Orleans” that featured three of the best musicians found anywhere in Jon Cleary, Henry Butler and Allen Toussaint. The show was as long as a New Orleans Summer night filled with barrelhouse piano, blues and songs worth remembering for a long, long time. Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” was like the show itself, long, wandering and satisfying to the Big Easy end. E-Performer of the Year- despite the misnomer attached to Chris Botti as smooth his performance and the entire show was full of nice edges, especially the beautiful reading of two Leonard Cohen songs lead by a perfect “A Thousand Kisses Deep.”

completely over to local government, pointing out the cities, counties and school district’s know what they need. He said most of these programs have strings attached to them but when they come down from the state and federal governments they are without sufficient tools, including funding, to make them work. Because they are mandated by law, the county has no choice and is unable to reduce them. Since 2007, the State of California has lost more than one million jobs. “Many have had to fall back on county welfare, over 20% of those have never had to rely on the system.” He said the answer is to create jobs and to provide the education needed to fill the jobs. He said the state budget proposed by the Governor Jan. 8 was similar to recent budgets with staggering levels of cuts that if passed will effect all of us. It is estimated the state will have a $20 billion deficit for the next five years. That means the loss of one full year of revenue to California. Knabe said the county ended its fiscal year with a budget that was balanced “We began to put aside ‘rainy day’ funds several years ago. He said Los Angeles County was in better shape than many of the counties throughout the state, but the set aside monies are shrinking. There are more than 140,000 employees in Los Angeles County, he stated, of which about 90,000 plus are union members. We have met with all our bargaining units and have agreed that for the next two years there will be no pay raises or new benefits. He said it was agreed that we would see this crisis through together. The Supervisor said perhaps the biggest savings has been department reductions. He said there has been no layoffs of permanent employees, however, some part time employees have been let go. “Wherever we can we are cutting back” he stated. In 2009 he told the Chamber, that more than anything right now, “we need the state and federal government to fulfill their obligation to provide funding for the mandates they pass.” He re-emphasized the key to the current economic crisis was jobs and more jobs. Turning to another area that has been of concern to the County Board of Supervisors, he said the Martin Luther King Hospital will be reopening with 120 beds, an emergency room, and an operating room. He said the hospital will be run by a professional staff, not politicians, he added.

12 COMMUNITY NEWS GROUP • JANUARY 15, 2010 SUBURBAN LEAGUE BASKETBALL
Norwalk’s shooting goes cold in second half, lose nail biter to Cerritos By Loren Kopff For Norwalk boys basketball head coach Jim Webster and his team, the first week of the Suburban League season was going to be one to see how the Lancers stack up in the circuit. Opening with Mayfair on Jan. 6, then hosting Cerritos last Friday, the two teams that are slated to battle for a league championship along with Norwalk, was not going to be a walk in the park by any means. So, following a 25-point loss to the Monsoons in their league opener, the Lancers were feeling good going into the fourth quarter against the Dons, having led for all but 19 seconds of the first three quarters. But Norwalk went cold from the field and the Dons, especially senior Titus Walden, rallied for a 51-50 victory that kept Norwalk winless against Cerritos for the 17th straight time. Both teams combined to score 15 points in the fourth quarter and Cerritos was held scoreless for the final 6:06. But again, the Lancers couldn’t get the shots to go through the nylon. “We gave up a lot of transition points where we didn’t run back,” Webster said. “I would probably look at 12 points on transition that we shouldn’t give up.” Norwalk scored the first eight points of the game before the Dons charged back and trailed by one after the first quarter. Walden was already warming up with five points and five rebounds to this point. Meanwhile, Norwalk senior Anthony Holliday, regarded as one of the best players in the league, was having problems again getting started as he scored just three points. That would change in the second quarter as Holliday scored 12 points in the stanza while junior Manuel Castaneda added 10

more to help the Lancers to a 35-26 lead. Those two combined to connect on five straight shots to begin the second quarter and as a team, the Lancers shot 46 percent from the field in the first half. “We were not going with our game plan,” said Cerritos head coach Jonathan Watanabe. “It was our opening [league] game and we had too much adrenaline going and we lost our focus on what we wanted to do. It took halftime to regroup and decide what we wanted to do.” Whatever Watanabe told his team at the break worked almost immediately as the Dons opened the second half on a 7-0 run while the hosts missed their first five shots of the third quarter. Walden’s second bucket of the stanza tied the game at 40-40 at the 2:12 mark and following two straight baskets by the Lancers, Walden closed out the stanza with his fifth field goal of the game. Cerritos junior Aaron Wright tied the game 15 seconds into the fourth quarter and shortly after that, Wright fed a pass to junior Bryan Williams who gave the Dons their first lead. Senior Anthony En, off another assist from Wright, and Walden’s basket off an offensive board, extended the lead to 51-44. But Norwalk made it interesting when junior Cammie Lewis scored off an offensive rebound with 35 seconds left to make it a 51-50 contest. “They picked up their intensity, definitely, and we weren’t playing too smart,” Watanabe said. “Experience wise, it seems like every game is an adventure and it’s just a matter of putting four quarters together.” “I knew they were going to get more shots, either by pushing the pace or [getting] offensive boards,” Webster said. “It was a little of both. If we hit a few shots in the third quarter or fourth quarter, we win.” After both teams called timeouts and after a Cerritos turnover, the Lancers were primed for a game-winning shot with nine seconds left in regulation. But Holliday was short on a running lay-up and Cerritos held on for the final two seconds. “Basically, if they were going to be in a triangle and two again, I was going to run the gap cutter and put Manuel up top to run it,” Webster said. “But they went straight man, so we ran with the fade and Anthony got the look over the top.” Walden led the Dons with 16 points and 17 rebounds on six of 13 shooting from the field while Wright added 11 points and eight rebounds along with five assists. “[Walden] should have had about 10 more points if he can finish his lay-ups,” Watanabe joked. “But we’ll take it. We needed every single point out there and every single rebound.” For the hosts, who dropped to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in the league, they were led for the 14th time this season by Holliday, who scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. However, he missed nine shots from the field. Castaneda added 14 points and 11 rebounds while Lewis chimed in with 11 points and three rebounds. Through the first 17 games, Holliday was averaging 18.7 points a game and was the league’s leading scorer with 318 points. “I don’t know if Anthony is getting tired,” Webster said. “That might be some-
thing we need to look at; getting Anthony some rest.” “Castaneda is good,” Watanabe said. “He’s not just a second fiddle; there’s a potent one-two punch right there. They’re tough to stop.” The Dons opened their home portion of league action this past Monday with a 7224 thumping of John Glenn as 11 different players scored, led by senior Christopher Keseloff who had 20 points. Cerritos hosted Artesia this past Wednesday and will travel to Bellflower tonight and La Mirada on Wednesday. On the girls side, it was another frustrating game for the Lady Lancers as they got off to another slow start and never recovered. Cerritos outscored the Lady Lancers 11-3 in the first quarter and went on to post a 44-33 victory. Norwalk drops to 8-8 overall and have been outscored by an average of 25 points in its first two league games. “We’re being haunted by turnovers and the ball handling skills,” said Norwalk head coach Richard Drake. “A lot of these kids are in their first year and I hate to keep using that as an excuse but the skills just have not been developed. It’s going to take time.” Against Mayfair, the Lady Lancers turned the ball over 13 times in the opening quarter. Last Friday, Cerritos forced Norwalk to turn the ball over 10 times in the first quarter and 31 times for the game. Cerritos led by as many as 19 points late in the first half and was up 35-15 with 3:58 left in the third quarter. The Lady Dons were paced by senior Kristy Kanamoto’s 15 points, six rebounds and three steals in the first half. She finished with 19 points while sophomore Ashley Juarez came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points and grab seven rebounds. “I thought she played better tonight than she did when I scouted her [against La Serna],” Drake said of Kanamoto. “It’s their first league game and I think people do step it up for league. I think she’s the absolute leader for that team and she can frustrate you.” Norwalk would close the gap to 11 points when senior Alexis Love hit two free throws with 1:29 left in the game. But the Loyola Marymount University signee was limited to 11 points and 14 rebounds and has scored 26 points in the two league games. “These two teams exposed all of our flaws and it makes you start to doubt yourselves,” Drake said. “Until we put up one or two “W’s” up on the board, we have a long way to go. Right now, I think that we’re in trouble and I think I overestimated where I thought my kids were and I think we have a lot of work to get to where we need to be. “I challenged the girls because they have the ability but they don’t seem to bring it,” he added. “They actually have no alternative, so jobs are on the line right now. They better listen to my challenges because right now I’m very serious. The younger players will come in for the veteran players if this continues.” This past Monday, the Lady Dons fell behind John Glenn early but had a surge over the last 6:15 of the first half and rode that momentum into the second half. Cerritos outscored the Lady Eagles 13-2 during
that span and went on to a relatively easy 50-33 victory which put Cerritos at 10-6 overall entering its game against Artesia this past Wednesday. Kanamoto scored a gamehigh 18 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists while junior Leighann Tomita added 13 points and five rebounds. Both Norwalk teams visit Glenn tonight and Artesia on Wednesday.
Lady Dons soccer slowly returning to winning ways By Loren Kopff After three long and frustrating seasons in which the Cerritos girls soccer team won a combined 13 games overall and finished in fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively, the team is making a charge to get back to the days of yesteryear. After the Lady Dons edged Suburban League rival Artesia 2-1 this past Wednesday, the team improved to 6-3 overall. Although there are still nine more games in the regular season, the six victories are the most since the 2006-2007 season and at 3-0 in league play, Cerritos is off to its best league start since going 3-0-1 in the 20042005 season. Part of the success this season can be attributed to first-year head coach Victoria Lathrop, who was the school’s junior varsity coach last season and is also an assistant coach at Whittier College. “When I met with them last spring, I asked them what their goals were and what they wanted to do this year,” Lathrop said. “They said they wanted to make sure they come out fit, smart and have the ability to face teams we’ve faced in the past and didn’t play well against. The amount of improvement comes from their desire to win and their desire to finish games at the full 80 minutes.” Cerritos opened up the league slate last Friday with a 3-0 win against Norwalk, a playoff team from last season. Senior forward Devin Thompson scored twice and junior midfielder Bianca Frontino added the other tally. The score would have been much worse for the Lancers as Cerritos peppered Norwalk junior goalkeeper Leslie Munoz for 25 shots with three of them hitting either the goal post or crossbar. This past Monday, the Lady Dons took 18 shots against John Glenn but could only get a 24th minute goal from freshman midfielder Connie Caliz in the team’s third shutout of the season. This past Wednesday, Cerritos got on the board in the 10th minute when freshman forward Analisa Marquez scored her third goal of the season. Ironically, it was the 10th minute of the Norwalk game when one of her shots hit the crossbar. Then one minute later, Caliz received a rebound from a sliding kick save from Artesia sophomore goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez and boomed a shot from about 25 yards out for a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would close the gap in the 23rd minute on a goal from senior midfielder Martha Rodriguez but in the second half, the Cerritos defense held Artesia to just

CABRILLO/PANGOS DREAM CLASSIC
Gahr’s non-league season ends in loss to state powerhouse By Loren Kopff LONG BEACH-When you play a team like Price, who has won numerous California Interscholastic Federation state championships, you have you take advantage of any big lead you get. The Gahr boys basketball team was hoping to keep the momentum of a 17-point lead going during the fourth of five games in the Cabrillo/Pangos Dream Classic last Saturday night. But the Gladiators missed the last nine shots from the field in the first half and saw the big lead evaporate to what turned out to be a 77-65 loss to the Knights. Gahr has lost two straight games after a 14-game winning streak to begin the season. “We had them early but we would like to have them late,” said Gahr head coach Bob Becker. “They’re a very, very good team. I was happy with [the big lead]. I wasn’t going to give one point back. But we knew that a great team like Price, who has been winning state titles year after year, was going to make a run back at us.” Junior Davon Potts rebounded from a subpar performance the previous week against Clovis West and scored 10 points in the first quarter, including a pair of threepointers. The Gladiators hit 10 of 16 field goals as they built a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. The lead would grow to 30-13 when junior Josh Perkins scored almost three minutes into the second quarter. But that would be the last field goal the team would convert in the half and the Knights scored the game’s next 14 points to trail 30-27 at the half. Potts would end the scoring drought at the 6:26 mark of the third quarter with his fourth trifecta of the game but Price still came back and took its first lead of the game with 2:38 left in the stanza. Gahr opened the fourth quarter on an 11-5 run with the last basket coming off a steal from Perkins with 4:48 remaining, After that, the shooting woes resurfaced and the Gladiators ended the game hitting on one of eight shots from the field.
“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we’re capable of,” Becker said. “We broke down a little bit defensively at times and a team like Price is going to make you pay, and they did.” Allen Crabbe, who was limited to five points in the first half, erupted for 31 in the second half to pace the Knights. Potts led the Gladiators with 23 points while senior Ervin Ware added 16 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. In the past five games, Ware has been averaging just over 25 points a game. “Ervin’s a gamer,” Becker said. “He shows up on game day and he’s ready to go. It’s going to take a lot to keep Ervin down on the day of a game. The bigger the game, the more Ervin is going to get up for it.” Senior Charles Nebo pitched in with a dozen points as Gahr opened up San Gabriel Valley League action this past Wednesday against Downey. Tonight, the team faces defending league champion Dominguez on the road, then visits Lynwood on Wednesday. “I’m really proud of my guys today,” Becker said. “That’s probably as hard as we’ve played for a full game, especially when you consider how challenging Price is and how good their players are.”

The latter to be used for future expansion .He said a complete set of projects are currently being drafted. Pereira said during construction the existing facility will remain open. The new structure will be located on the southwest corner of the casino’s parking lot, The entrance to the building will be from the east and will utilize the existing main entrance from Carson Street. Asked if there were plans for a parking structure, he said not at the present time. “ After all plans have been approved, an environmental review will take place. It is estimated this will take approximately 18 months to complete.
YING
Continued from page 5 tip-toed up to painful pursuit of this object of amor but still had moments of ecstatic joy in the composers heart that seemed to reach beyond even the power of musical composition. The music is actually a companion to the many intimate love letters he sent to his intended who was kept from responding by the unpleasant reality of a young husband. The final allegro reached beyond the twists and turns of Janacek’s ultimate failure to a dream of the possibilities of love. The best was indeed saved for last on the program for the Ying Quartet and Beethoven’s incredibly rich Quartet in C Major, Opus 59, no. 3 that is sometimes called Hero. The music here seems to expand the entire concept of the quartet and creates a powerful statement in bright, lyrical tones after an uncharacteristic somber beginning. In every movement of this quartet the performance by the Yings was impressive in passion and perfect in complimenting each other’s playing in this wonderfully complex composition. The crisp and lively rendering of the opening two andante leads to a rather elegant and stately minuet which then flows into the memorable Allegro molto at the finish that would have made the cow-punk bassist tap her foot in joyful rhythm.

Everyone talks about being stuck in tra;c, but LA County voters did something about it. In November 2008, Measure R was approved, committing a projected $40 billion to tra;c relief and transportation upgrades over the next 30 years. Following are updates on some of the projects supported by Measure R.
I-5 Expansion From Route 605 To OC To Launch In 2010 This year is expected to see construction begin on the long-awaited widening of a 6.7-mile stretch of the I-5 Freeway from the 605 Freeway to the Orange County line. The project will add a carpool lane and general-purpose lane in each direction, easing the c bottleneck caused when it meets the 10-lane portion at the county line.
Alternatives Reviewed For Eastside Transit Corridor Metro is looking at two light rail transit alternatives for further review on extending the Metro Gold Line farther east from East LA. The routes being explored are from Atlantic Boulevard along either the Pomona Freeway or Washington Boulevard. The area under study is home to more than 675,000 residents.
$9.5 Million Returned To Cities From Measure R The first installments in Measure R local return sales tax monies totaling $9.5 million have gone out to 38 cities in LA County for transportation improvements. First and second payments for sales taxes received from July through September ranged from $2,635 for the City of Irwindale to $6.1 million for the City of LA.

two shots. Cerritos has just five seniors but the team is loaded with a high number of returning underclassmen, which will lead many to believe that the Lady Dons are a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Caliz, Frontino, Marquez and Thompson all have three goals thus far while the defense has allowed eight goals. The Lady Dons have a trio of goaltenders that Lathrop can go to at any time-senior captain Jackie Trimble, senior A.J. Periard and sophomore Chantel Muro. “Devin is amazingly skilled and amazingly fast,” Lathrop said. “The combination of her and Analisa up top is our greatest threat. The flip side to that is that we’re even across the board. We also have [junior defender] Jessica Sunio in the back with [senior midfielder] Christina Alarid and [senior forward] Gloria Betancourt. Having the maturity, seniority and leadership that we have is making a big difference.” Cerritos will visit Bellflower today, then travel to La Mirada on Wednesday before concluding the first round of league action on Jan. 22 against league nemesis Mayfair. Cerritos hasn’t had a winning season since the 2005-2006 campaign, also the last time it advanced to the playoffs. From the 19981999 season to the 2005-2006 season, the Lady Dons finished in third place and made the playoffs in each of those seasons and going 58-34-4 in league action. At the rate the Lady Dons are going, they may be making a serious run at a league title rather than just a playoff berth. “I’m surprised that we’re consistent,” Lathrop said. “I would love to see us stay consistent. It’s fantastic to be 3-0 [in league] and six [wins] on the season. But I think they’re a special team. I think they have a lot to offer this year.”
