Cerritos High School Cheerleaders participate in London parade By Jerry Bernstein Editor’s Note: The following is an interview with Cerritos High School Junior and Varsity Cheerleader Marin Chattong prior to her trip to Great Britain as a member of the United States Cheerleading Team that participated in the New Years London Parade. She and four other Cerritos Cheerleaders were among those selected from throughout the United States to go to London and represent the United States in the Parade. She also kept a journal of her trip to London.

Four hundred high schools girls from throughout the United States were selected to represent the country in the annual New Year London Parade. Five were from Cerritos High School. Approximate 70 students were chosen from the Western United States. Twenty of them, including the five Cerritos girls, got together and had their pictur picture taken with the London Bridge in the background.

Marin Chattong is a typical high school student. She likes Volley Ball and “I can only be on one varsity team,” she explained. I chose cheerleading. However, I am on the junior varsity volleyball team, which is my favorite sport.” She said she has been playing volleyball since she was in the third grade. “I really love where I am,” she exclaimed. I love volleyball and love being a cheerleader. I’ve been on the cheerleading varsity team three years. This is the first time I’ve been

chosen to the go London. I’m really excited. Marin was selected to try out for the cheerleading trip while doing routines. Judges were going around selecting candidates. Once chosen cheerleaders were given a routine to do. You do have time to practice and put your own interpretation on it, and then perform it in front of judges, she said. They then select who will be on the team. She said five girls from Cerritos were chosen to be on the 400-member team and participate in the New Year Parade in London. She described it as being similar to our Rose Bowl Parade and was televised. Marin said they were given three uniforms a red jacket, a blue and white jacket that comes with skirt and a long sleeve jacket. I’ve never been in snow before, she said, except for a visit to Big Bear. She thought it might snow while she was in London. Cerritos has 11 cheerleaders who perform at school sport events. “I’ve been to three National Events, she said. Asked what she would like to

Storms inflict property damage in Cerritos

Protecting local funds from state raids Cerritos Council endorses ballot initative. By Jerry Bernstein The Cerritos City Council unanimously approved a resolution in support of a ballot initiative that will prevent the State from raiding local government transportation and public transit funds. In a report to the council, Assistant City Manager Kathy Matsumoto said over the years California voters have overwhelmingly passed separate ballot measurers to keep local funding sources essential for local services and prevent the State from raiding local government transit and transportation funds. “Despite this, the State recently passed a budget that borrows and takes approximately $5 billion in city, county, transit, redevelopment and special district funds this year. For Cerritos, these costs are estimated to be $14.1 million in redevelopment funds over the next two fiscal years. “ The Resolution is in support of the Local Taxpayer, Public Safety, and Transportation Protection Act of 2010, a ballot measure sponsored by the League of California Cities. If approved by the voters, it will prevent the State from borrowing, raiding or otherwise redirect local government, transportation and public funds, including: • Adding new constitutional restriction that prohibits the State from taking tax increment funds collected within a redevel-

More Inside Carmenita and South - Storm winds knocked down a tree that fell on a car in Cerritos. The vehicle was headed southbound on Carmenita Road and was struck just north of South St. at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday. The tree was blown down from the center median and into traffic. The driver appeared to be out of the vehicle and uninjured. The vehicle appears to have sustained most front-end damage, with the bulk of the tree lying across the open engine hood. Rain storm causes tree to fall onto townhouse - Workmen saw limbs off a 30-year old eucalyptus tree that fell onto a Sundance townhouse facing Bloomfield Avenue just north of 166th Street Tuesday, Jan. 19. A workman said the heavy rains that soaked the earth combined with strong winds was too much for the tree, No one as hurt and it looked like damage was limited only to that section of the roof although a final determination wouldn’t be made until the tree is removed and a closer examination can be made. La Palma’s history in hood hands with the Mac Ivers in charge!

By Larry Caballero Ron and Elfriede Mac Iver have lived in La Palma longer than most residents—45 years—and they remember when the city was called Dairyland. After raising a family of five, the Mac Ivers began researching their family history and soon were collecting information on the early history of La Palma. This project led to their book being published in 2008 and entitled Images of America LA PALMA, consisting of chapters on the early years, the birth of the city, today’s La Palma and city pride. La Palma is the smallest city in Orange County in terms of land size at 1.8 square miles, evolved out of the Los Coyotes land grand, and later was carved into ranchos and family farms.

Unable to halt tract building, the dairy farmers continued their forward-thinking initiatives for the renamed “La Palma” in 1965 by creating a Master Plan that included the first underground utilities in the country. The Mac Ivers take pride in knowing

several times each year to accommodate his father’s profession as a race rider and trainer of thoroughbred horses. He does remember one year when he enrolled in nine different schools. As a child he was already interested in history and was fascinated to hear his

all of the city pioneers from the 1960’s and today’s city officials, and they are very familiar with city statistics including the year the City was incorporated—1955. The population at that time was 500; by 1964, there were 642 residents and 18,000 by 1975. Today, there are over 16,000 residents who call La Palma their home. Ron Mac Iver doesn’t remember, however, many of the places he called home as a child since his family would move

great grandparents tell stories about their experiences as traders with the Blackfoot Indians of South Dakota. He and his wife even learned Native American Dancing. At 17, Mac Iver enlisted in the military as a Marine and spent one year in Korea in 1953. In time, he would also visit Okinawa, Formosa and Tai Pei where he packed and repaired artillery weapons. He spent most of his working years in aviation before retiring and dedicating

himself and his wife to being the official historians for the City. Elfriede Mac Iver grew up in New York before moving with her family in 1950 to California where her father had been employed as a tool and dye maker. She met Ron at a USO dance where the girls were only allowed to have conversation and to dance with the boys in uniform, and nothing else. Going home with them was forbidden. Even so, they got to know one another well enough to marry and start their lives in several Southern California cities before settling in La Palma. She was a housewife, homemaker and mother while Ron worked, but the couple still had time to get involved in the city. It helped that a mayor and police chief lived on their street. “We became active by accident,” said Elfriede Mac Iver. The Mac Ivers are seen at most city events including the recent welcoming of representatives from Korea who came to celebrate their city of Hanam becoming La Palma’s sister city. In September, 2009, Ron Mac Iver was invited along with former Mayor Mark Waldman and City Councilman Henry Charoen to visit Hanam as their guests. Mac Iver was asked because of his military assignment in Korea, and he was presented with a proclamation and gifts from Jong-Pil Choi, President of the Korean War Association. Currently, the Mac Ivers are members of the La Palma Recreation and Community Services and are working diligently on the La Palma Historical Preservation Project, consisting of hundreds of pages of historical documents and photos. It will be on display in the Chamber Office for all the residents to enjoy.

By Larry Caballero Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research at the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Lawrence Yun was the guest speaker Jan. 15 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel hosted by the Pacific West, Rancho Southeast and Downey Associations of Realtors. The program was entitled “Following the Money in Real Estate, An Economic Forecast.” Yun discussed the latest developments in the housing market, national and local; when prices will begin to stabilize; and comparisons of today’s market to past housing cycles. He also discussed with more than three hundred realtors and friends a comprehensive look at housing stimulus measures, sub prime loans and the impact of foreclosures. Yun flew from Washington, D.C. to participate in the discussion. “I’m happy to be in Southern California,” Yun said, “because you can’t beat this weather.” Yun pointed out that while the country is recovering from a two-year recession, it has been a five-year recession for the housing market. “Yet housing market statistics are looking better. There has been a positive impact in the market from the housing stimulus package and recent tax credits. Now we need to lobby our policy makers in Washington to extend and expand them.” First time buyers are beginning to enter the market again and Yun forecasts an additional 2.4 million by June 2010 alone. “We all need to be supportive of government policies that preserve middle class wealth.” Yun believes that once there is stabilization in the economy, consumers

And the time may be now.” Yun believes there will be significant improvement by the spring of 2010. Home sales should increase by 15% or more and prices should increase by 3-5%. “What happened to this economy in recent years should not happen again for a 100 years. Washington and Wall Street were acting irresponsibly.” Yun is concerned that there has not been enough new housing units being built in recent years because the lending institutions

have been reluctant to lend money. “It’s just a matter of time before they will begin to lend again to responsible builders.” Yun understood that California is different from most states, but the current housing market statistics would still apply. “I am hopeful that 2010 will be a much better year than 2009.” Yet Yun had no good news for commercial property owners. “There will be no recovery in 2010. Interested buyers, and there are a few, can’t get financing.” Yun shared an anecdote with the audience that took place in the remaining months of 2008 when Congress was worried about an economic collapse, as serious as the Great Depression of the

Healthy eating a different approach to national health reform

By Assemblymember Tony Mendoza As the debate on how to develop and institute national healthcare coverage continues in Washington D.C., California has begun a movement to help its citizens mitigate future health concerns. The passage of the landmark health bill AB 97 in 2008, made California the first state in the nation to recognize the health risks posed by Trans Fat oils and the first state to ban the use of the oil in food preparation in restaurants, cafeterias and bakeries that began January 1, 2010.

As the author of the bill, I recognized and became concerned with the unhealthy eating habits of the children I was teaching as a fourth grade teacher in East Los Angeles. National data indicated that childhood obesity and the onset of Type II Diabetes among school aged children was on the rise. Once in the Assembly, I became aware that foods prepared in Trans Fat oils were shown to accelerate Type II Diabetes, were a cause of heart disease and strokes. With over 88,000 restaurants, including fast food, in California a majority were using Trans Fats in their food preparation. AB 97 was written to help protect consumers from an unhealthy ingredient that has the potential to deteriorate their living condition and is easily replaceable by healthier forms of cooking oils. As a nation we have struggled to deal with over-eating and unhealthy eating, which has lead to a rise in heart, artery and diabetic conditions. The issue of health is more than a personal concern, it also affects businesses. As a direct result of an unhealthy lifestyle, businesses lose productivity when employee's suffering with health issues miss work and cause health premiums to rise. One step in the right direction is in simple preventative maintenance. In addition to exercising a minimum of 30 minutes each day, healthy eating is a partner in the fight against health risks. Removing Trans Fats is one remedy to improving healthy eating without a noticeable change in the taste or texture of food items the consumer purchases at restaurants. AB 97 removes the risk and provides piece of mind to Californians and to visitors who will know that the food pre-

pared for them is among the healthiest in the nation. Assemblymember Mendoza is a former teacher who serves the communities of Artesia, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, Cerritos, Buena Park, Hawaiian Gardens, East Whittier, Lakewood and Los Nietos.

These new 2010 California laws are real humdingers The California State Legislature can’t fix our budget fiasco, but they did pass some new laws that take effect New Year’s Day, and frankly I’m scratching my head over a few of them. In 2010, Californians can now ride seat-less bicycles, so long as the bike was designed that way, according to a bill sponsored by Senator Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego. Wait a minute? “Seat-less” bikes? Is this a joke? I would hate to see the rear end of the poor guy running around trying to sit on a seat-less bike. Another classic 2010 California Stupid Law is that motorists can install televisions in their car, provided the driver can't watch it while operating the vehicle, according to a bill sponsored by the brilliant Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, a Democrat from La Canada Flintridge. Let’s see, you place the television in the back seat of you car, but NOW it’s against the law for you to BOTH DRIVE your CAR and WATCH your TELEVISION

Moving on, our local State Assemblyman Tony Mendoza’s much touted “No Trans Fat in My Fast Food Pal” will finally become law. It will be a “no-no” for California restaurants to cook with Tran’s fat beginning New Year's Day. Don’t even think about it. California will become the first state in America to crack down on that awful substance that is tied to clogged arteries, strokes and coronary heart diseases. (I thought tobacco was bad, heck no, it’s TRANS FAT!) The ban is hailed by supporters as a way to protect diners who routinely have not been aware of consuming Tran’s fat at some restaurants because they don't see the meals cooked or the ingredients used. Others believe that the new law is just another attempt of “big brother” getting into the business of ones personal choice. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Mr. Universe and self proclaimed “workout nut,” signed the measure in 2008, but didn’t go into effect until New Year’s 2010 because restaurants were given a one-year adjustment period. I spent this past year eating as much trans fat as possible since it will be gone forever starting this Friday. Bakeries will need to comply with the no-trans fat rule next year on January 1, 2011. Will this stop making people fat here in California? No way. Give me a break. I can’t wait to see what brilliant new laws Sacramento will pass in 2010. Remember this is an election year, so voters beware!

Keb Mo and more at Cerritos Center Cerritos previews By Glen Creason The last time I saw Keb Mo perform at Cerritos I thought maybe the show could not get better since it was the best of the year in 2002. Before that he made his mark as an opening act at the Center and demonstrated definite star qualities evidenced

CCPA review in his marvelously fluid guitar work, his rich, expressive voice and fine songwriting skills. On Saturday night he came back and more than conquered the full-house at the Performing Arts Center doing all that and more. Keb Mo has only grown better, stronger and more polished within a genre that sort of demands raw edges. On this night he also made an extremely wise choice of inviting the perfect accompanist in Susan Werner who astounded with her command of various instruments and awesome set of pipes. Ms. Werner is an established folk-singersongwriter in her own “write” but here she humbly stayed with Keb Mo and made him look better on every song. Of course, he is terrific all by his lonesome which he was on several intimate tunes but overall the two musicians were a perfect pairing. It was fun to hear the uninitiated crowd gasp when Susan Werner first opened up her big voice and hit some high notes with Keb Mo smiling off to the side. Certainly the Keb Mo repertoire just gets better and better the more he matures and it doesn’t hurt to be able to throw in gems like “I’m a Hero,” “Life Is Beautiful,” “More Than One Way Home” and “Just Like Me” that are met with shouts of joy from the enthusiastic fans in the audience. Yet, this concert was solid throughout with no duds in twenty-two songs, including a generous helping of four encores. Interestingly enough he started the proceedings with a Johnny Cash tune “Folsom Prison Blues” and mixed in a banquet of good stuff balanced nicely between blues and ballad. There was the sentimental like “I’m a Hero,” “Henry,” “A Better Man” and the double delights of “One Friend,” and “Closer” that gave you a lump in the throat. There were the traditional shout outs to ladies, in particular “Eileen” and “Angelina.” These were balanced by lighter fair such as “the Bucket,” “City Boy,” “Government Cheese,” “Soon as I Get Paid,” “Shave Yo’ Legs for Me,” and “Whole Nutha Thing” that showed the jocular side of the blues. This kind of music is not easy to perform in a large hall but Keb Mo never seems daunted by the space and filled the auditorium with sweet sounds despite changing instruments constantly and sending notes flying from several genres from song to song. Even at this high level Keb Mo outdid himself a couple of times, like on the spiritual “Hand It Over” and the utterly saucy “What You Got” that left a nice bluesy taste in the hall. The standing ovation lasted so long some folks in the hall had to sit down for the last gushing segment of appreciation. Considering that Keb Mo delivers lyrics that are just downright poetry and plays five guitars like a master while singing up to the highest blues standards I think Cerritos was very lucky to have this young man on their stage.

Los Cerritos Center & Red Cross partner to collect donations for Haitian Relief Efforts Red Cross says the best way to help is monetary donations. More people want to know what they can do to help, as the staggering need continues growing in Haiti in the earthquake’s aftermath. The American Red Cross is advising that the greatest way to make a positive impact is to simply give donations in the form of money to help with the primary needs of food, water, shelter and medical help. Los Cerritos Center is partnering with the American Red Cross to collect such monetary donations in the form of cash, check and credit card. Starting today, there will be a collection site located at Guest Services, which is located near Red Robin in the Macy’s wing. There will be envelopes available to allow shoppers to give. It is important to note that the mall is unable to accept any other type of Haiti relief donations, such as clothing, food or medical supplies. I have a dream where my four children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged not by their color but by their character.” Martin Luther King Jr. There was a light rain, and the clouds overhead were becoming darker and more threatening, but families and friends came despite the weather. They filled the Skyline Room in the Cerritos Library to capacity, gathering together to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of fighting for social and economic justice. The Men’s Ensemble from the Baptist Church of the New Covenant provided a prelude of music and song for those gathered to pay tribute to a man who inspired

The Mayor said in 1968 Dr. King delivered a sermon entitled “The Drum Major Instinct.” In it he asserted that everybody could be great because everybody can serve. He expressed service as a universal gift; one that is not bound by education, race or gender. The Mayor said he was proud that Cerritos has many dedicated community members with “hearts full of grace” who offer their service to help make Cerritos a betterplace each day. He also said it was nice to see community youth participating in these ceremony. Mayor Pro Tem Joseph Cho introduced long time resident Charlie Ara who walked with Dr. King in Washington D.C. where he gave his “I Have A Dream,” speech. Ara described the day as being very hot, but electrifying. “Dr. Kings dream is coming to fulfillment in the 21st Century”, he said. He was followed by the Girls Academy & Delta Gems of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority who performed a Choral Recital.

The 1st Combat Engineer Battalion was adopted by the City of Cerritos on Nov 11, 2007 and each month, the city invites the battalion's Meritorious Marine to be its guest. Mayor Bruce Barrows and Councilwoman Carol Chen presented a city proclamation to Cpl. Schoening on Jan. 16 at the fountain court located between the Sheraton Hotel and the Cerritos Performing Arts Center. The hotel provided complementary lodging and breakfast and the Cerritos Performing Arts Center provided two tickets to the Woody Herman Orchestra performance the next day an. 17. Lunch was provided by BJs Restaurant, Dinner provided by The Macaroni Grill, and Lunch on Sunday provided by TGI Friday's. Marianne and Bob Hughlett hosted Cpl Schoening for his weekend in Cerritos. Cpl Schoening was selected as a Meritorious Marine based on his nomination by his command. In August of 2007, he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Hit, Iraq, where he served as a vehicle gunner and driver, while also serving as platoon clerk. He was involved in over 75 combat missions that included combat operation post expansion and construction, weapons cache sweeps, dismounted route sweeps, and a month long campaign where he integrated with a U.S. Navy river boat platoon sweeping all islands between Baghdadi and Ramadi. His efforts helped deny the enemy the ability to emplace roadside bombs and conduct ambushes around the battalion’s area of operation. Upon his return from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Cpl Schoening was assigned to Company A, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion where he prepared for another upcoming deployment to Afghanistan with Battalion Landing Team 1/1. Weekly Crime Summary Jan. 11 - 17 Part I felony crime investigations dropped from twenty-one the week before to nineteen last week. While residential burglaries increased, robberies did not, and commercial burglaries, vehicle burglaries, and vehicle thefts dropped. Cerritos Sheriff’s Station patrol personnel handled 288 calls for service last week, down from 322 the week before. The new 2010 weekly average in calls for service is 298. GREAT NEWS! For the second consecutive week, there were no robberies reported. Residential burglaries increased last week after three completed burglaries and one attempted burglary was reported. Two cases were logged the previous reporting period. In the crimes last week, two incidents occurred north of Artesia Boulevard and east of Shoemaker Road. Computers, computer games, cameras, CDs, cash, and laptops were among the items stolen. In the attempted crime, a suspect was arrested by deputies after the resident called 911 when he tried to open a side window. All four of the crimes last week involved window prying or force applied to doors. The new 2010 weekly average in residential burglaries is 2.3. Side garage doors or residence doors that are not fortified with a strong deadbolt lock are vulnerable to being kicked in or forced open by the weight of an intruder. Make sure that you install a good deadbolt lock deep into a sturdy door frame. This will make it very difficult for someone to enter and will force them to locate another way to do so. There was one commercial burglary reported last week, down by one from the week before. A closed business was involved where an office window was shattered and computers were stolen. The 2010 weekly average in this crime category is 1.7. Vehicle burglaries dropped by one case. There were four reported. A high-volume commercial parking lot was involved in one. Two SUVs were among those targeted and a third-row seat was taken. MP3 players were stolen in the others. The new 2010 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 4.0. With the shift in locations to residential neighborhoods last week, it is evident that property is being left inside the passenger compartment of vehicles. These items should have at the very least been locked in trunks, but more importantly, taken inside of the residence overnight. Thieves will go through residential tracks in vehicles, on bicycles, and on foot and look into parked cars in hopes of finding something valuable to steal. If you leave these items in the car, you stand a very good chance of losing them. Remember, vehicle burglary is the number one felony crime in Cerri-

tos. Vehicle thefts dropped to two compared to five for three consecutive weeks. Highvolume commercial parking lots were involved in both cases last week. A Honda and an SUV were taken. The 2010 weekly average in vehicle thefts is 4.0. If you own one of the most commonly reported stolen vehicles in Cerritos, such as an 80’s or 90’s Honda or Toyota, we would urge that you use a steering wheel locking device. Based on the variety of vehicles taken each week in addition to Hondas and Toyotas, a sound approach would be to equip your vehicle regardless of what type it is. Glenn was led by senior Jose Escobar’s eight points but it was the play of junior Andy Aguirre that drew some praise from Elisaldez. He grabbed 20 rebounds with 15 of them coming in the first half. “Andy is a great athlete,” Elisaldez said. “He’s just learning the game. If he were to understand the little things, the nuances of the game, he’s going to be an extremely strong rebounder if he goes to the next level.” The Eagles, who have finished no better than sixth place for eight straight seasons, are trying to avoid their third straight season of at least 20 losses. They would need to win at least three games to avoid that. “We always feel we should be in the game no matter who is on the other side of the floor,” Elisaldez said. “We have different matchups but none the less, we come to bring it no matter who is on the other side.”

Alternatives Reviewed For Eastside Transit Corridor Metro is looking at two light rail transit alternatives for further review on extending the Metro Gold Line farther east from East LA.
