Cerritos College Student Food Drive Experiences Generosity Beyond Measure
Nestlé USA and Superior Grocers Award Rep. Linda Sánchez Wins Federal Funds for Whitney High School $2,000 the Los Cerritos Area Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) announced today that she has secured initial support for over $3 million in federal funding for projects across her Southern California district, including programs in the Long Beach area. Most of these investments were included in the Omnibus appropriations bill passed by the House of Representatives today. The bill will now proceed to the Senate then be signed by the President to become law. “This funding is an important step to provide new opportunities for our students who need it most,” said Congresswoman Sánchez. “I am also pleased to promote programs and initiatives that impact our environment in a positive way.” The investments include:
By Aya Abelon Couches and tables in the Student Activities office were completely buried in mountains of canned soup, snacks and instant noodles the week before Thanksgiving this year. The Annual ASCC-sponsored Student Activities Office Food Drive competition has been a tradition at Cerritos College for over 20 years. The food was donated to the Norwalk City Council’s Holiday Food Basket Program to help less fortunate families in the Norwalk area. Over 36,000 non-perishable food items were brought in by campus clubs and individuals. Members of the City of Norwalk were stunned when they saw the “wall” in the Student Activities office. “I’m seeing more donations today than any previous years,” said Tak Hamabata, director of Social Services at the City of Norwalk. “These will get us through early next year, which means we can help families in need have a happy holiday season.” With the economy still in slump and unemployment in double digits, Hamabata said he sees many middle-class families

La Palma Property Receives Extreme Makeover By Larry Caballero
ARCO volunteers, along with La Palma city personnel and city councilman (not pictured) help to clean up Carol Dryssen's home during the makeover. The volunteers' work, Tom Dyrssen said, means he and his mother can now focus their concentration on Carol Dryssen's doctor visits. This was something on her mind," Tom Dyrssen said, gesturing around the newly-empty yard, where city abatement notices on stakes had been cast aside. "This restores my faith in humanity."
Every city wishes that residents maintain their own properties, but no matter how hard they try, it’s not always possible. La Palma was no exception. For years, City officials had repeatedly asked one ailing senior resident on Santa Margarita Lane to clean up her property, but to no avail. It was obvious that she needed some assistance, so it became a community project with volunteers from the City, bp/ARCO in La Palma and Cornerstone Property Services in Fountain Valley to show up for work with brooms, shovels, rakes, sledgehammers, and saws. La Palma Director of Public Works Jeff Moneda helped supervise volunteers Dec. 2 as they cleaned and pulled up old trees in the front yard and cleared out the tall grass and rusted fences in the back. Tom Dyrssen, the resident’s son, said that the massive effort to clean up his

Ford Ladies Hold Annual Christmas Party By Helen M. Brown The Ford Motor Company in Pico Rivera closed their doors in 1880 forcing two thousand men out of work. It had opened in 1958 therefore combining both the Long Beach and Maywood plants. When it closed in 1980 a group of salaried employees spearheaded by Jack Koulek of the Trim Department and his wife, Beverly, who worked in the office, decided to band together and form the LA After Club whereas they would meet twice a year in order to stay in touch with each other. They would meet at Christmas time and again in the summer.

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, twenty-nine years later, approximately 75 of these former Ford employees and their wives met at Khroury’s in Long Beach to celebrate their annual Christmas Party. It is a wonderful group and even though some did not originally know one another, due to the number of men at Ford, it wasn’t long before they were able to make lifelong friends within this smaller gathering of their former co-workers. It was an honor to welcome Ms. Pauline Doolittle, a spry 91 year old. She was the first woman to be hired at the Long Beach plant and worked on the teletype. A second woman was hired a short time

The sure-fire pulse quickening “Grazin’ in the Grass” was spiced by the sax and sexy demeanor of guest artist Misti Abair joining horns with Rick Brain and leader Dave Koz who again took point on “You Make Me Smile” but the rest joined on an extended jam that warmed the holiday blood of an entire auditorium into and including the Christmas encores that followed.
Number thirteen did not prove unlucky for the Smooth Jazz Christmas show at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday night. Cerritos Library Receives 5-Star Rating From “Library Journal” for the Second Time Cerritos Library has once again attained a five-star rating in “Library Journal’s” national rating of public libraries, the LJ Index of Public Library Service. The index identifies the “star libraries” in the United States and the results were recently announced by the magazine. The index measures circulation per capita, visits per capita, program attendance per capita, and public Internet use per capita. The top libraries in each category, organized by ranges of operating expenditures, were then assigned five, four, or three stars. Only three libraries in California earned five star status throughout all size categories. The designation places the Cerritos Library in the top 10 libraries in the United States in its size category. Cerritos Mayor Bruce Barrows said: “The City of Cerritos is honored to have once again received the ‘Library Journal’s’ prestigious five-star rating for the Cerritos Library. The Library’s exceptional public services and programs have long been known by our residents, and the award cements the Library’s status as a top-notch facility.” In its 132nd year of publication, “Library Journal” is the oldest and most respected publication covering the library field. “Library Journal” is read by more than 100,000 library directors, administrators, and staff in public, academic, and special libraries. Cerritos Library is located at 18025 Bloomfield Avenue, Cerritos. The library is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Hawaiian Gardens Holds Annual City-Wide Christmas Party By Jerry Bernstein
There were games, gifts and fun for everyone as the children entered the C. Robert Lee Gymnasium, which has been turned into a Christmas playroom with a tiled walkway that led to a courtyard where Santa Claus awaited the youngsters. The children and their parents lined the sidewalk along Norwalk Boulevard,

patiently waiting their turn to go inside. Greeting them inside the building was a man on stilts with tiny elf feet, a Snow Queen, Mr. Licorice, and Miss Lollypop. There were hula hoop contests, and youngsters walking under a “forever” lowering rod while Santa’s helpers gave gifts to the children. Outside in the courtyard there were more games to be played and Santa Claus sitting on his throne while the youngsters told him what they would like for Christmas.. Santa’s helpers distributed gifts while Christmas music filled the air. All in all, it was a merry time for all concerned. City Council Members and Assemblyman Tony Mendoza with Mr. Licorice at the Hawaiian Gardens Annual Christmas Party for the city’s children. Ask A Doctor of Audiology About Hearing Loss and Hearing Aids
Q. A.
Call (714) 523-4327 I was told that I have nerve deafness and that hearing aids would not help me. Is this true?
Many people have been told this over the years, but it is not necessarily true. The majority of people who have “nerve deafness,” or sensorineural hearing loss, improve their hearing through the use of hearing aids. There is no medicine or surgery to repair the inner ear, so these hearing impaired individuals need amplification systems to hear their loved ones. Improvements in computer-chip technology have also made hearing aid systems and assistive listening devices (ALDs) much more advanced than years ago. They are available now to make your life, and those of your loved ones, much easier.

2009 FALL ALL-AREA TEAMS
Norwalk Football, Cerritos Girls Volleyball Come Away Big Winners By Loren Kopff While there were no California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section championships won, there was still that championship atmosphere with the Norwalk football and Cerritos girls volleyball teams this past fall. The Lancers lost one regular season game, which came to eventual Southern Division and Suburban League rival La Mirada while the Lady Dons enjoyed the best season the school has ever seen, advancing to the Southern California Division III state finals. Not to be dismissed was the aerial assault performance from Gahr’s football team. Here are the top performers from the 2009 fall season in the Los Cerritos Community News All-Area Teams.

Offensive Player of the Year:
Anything his older brother Corey can do, Casey Nielsen can do better. That was the theme going around for Gahr’s senior quarterback, who passed for a whopping 4,406 yards and 41 touchdowns. He now ranks third all-time in the state for a single season in passing yardage, which had been owned by Corey Nielsen. In addition, Casey Nielsen averaged 400.5 yards per game, which was the best in the state for a single season as well as the nation and his completion percentage of 69.6 was fifth in the state all-time for a single season.
Defensive Player of the Year:
Many knew of Norwalk junior Elijhaa Penny to be a workhorse of offense as he piled up over 1,500 yards on the ground. But he was just as much of a threat as a lineman on the other side of the ball. Penny led the Lancers with 56 sacks, 44 of them all by himself and had eight sacks, good for third among area players along with four interceptions, tied for first in the area.
Coach of the Year:
Once again, Jesse Ceniceros took his Norwalk squad to the semifinals, reiterating what he had stated at the conclusion of last season’s semifinal loss. In two seasons at Norwalk, Ceniceros has won 19 games opposite five losses and in 2009, his Double Wing-T offense pounded out 5,694 rushing yards and 79 touchdowns. Three players reached the 1,000-yard plateau on the ground. Last season, the Lancers ran for over 4,000 yards and half the touchdowns of this past season.

Co-Players of the Year:
Cerritos senior middle blocker Jenny Ho picked up where her teammate Kristabelle Tamula left off last season. Ho was the main force in the Lady Dons’ lineup as she tormented opponents to the tune of 503 kills in 849 attempts. Ho also had 42 aces and led the team with 95 blocks. But those numbers wouldn’t be possible without the help of senior setter Samantha Adams, who had 1,077 assists, 227 digs and 55 blocks, good for third on the team. Adams also served 61 aces, also third on the team. Both players were recently named to the All CIF-Southern Section Division III team.
Coach of the Year:
Cerritos head coach Khanh Vo had a season to remember. Not only did the Lady Dons win their second Suburban
League title since 2005 and third league title since 1995, he guided his team all the way to the Division III-A championship match. A loss to defending champion Mayfield didn’t deter the team which fell one match short of playing for a state championship. When it was all said and done, Vo coached his team to a 25-4 record this past season, a far cry from the 14-7 mark of last season.
Valley Christian Soccer Ties, Defeats St. Margaret’s, Holds Onto Trophy By Loren Kopff Fred Wind was a soccer coaching legend at Valley Christian, winning 369 games with both the boys and girls teams in 31 combined seasons. While he has been retired from both coaching and teaching, his name still lives on as Valley plays St. Margaret’s every December in the Fred Wind Cup, a girls/boys doubleheader. Last Friday night, in the seventh year of the event, the boys fell behind 1-0 in the 13th minute but rallied for a 2-1 victory to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Tartans last season. Valley has won six of the seven games in the Fred Wind Cup, outscoring St. Margaret’s 13-3. The Crusaders also evened their record at 3-3 after the game, then played a pair of games last Saturday in the North Orange County Tournament, blanking Pomona 1-0 and tying Oak Park 2-2. Valley trailed 1-0 at the half and couldn’t get much going on offense, taking four shots on goal. One of those shots came in the 20th minute when junior Josh Sutherlin fed a pass to senior Tanner Miller whose point blank attempt was stuffed. But in the 57th minute, Sutherlin would tie the contest when he scored off a corner kick from junior Daniel Hernandez. “The difference was they were playing a 3-5-2 and…in the first half, we were playing the ball too centrally,” said Valley head coach Chris Becher. “The ball wasn’t getting wide while the space was. In the second half, we figured it out.” With Valley suddenly gaining all of the momentum, Sutherlin was at it again three minutes later when he took a pass from Miller and scored his fifth goal, tops on the team. Then, with nine minutes remaining in the game, the Crusaders were looking for an insurance goal but sophomore Austin Colangelo hit the post and Miller was a bit too high on a shot. Valley took eight shots in the second half while the Tartans were held to just two over the final 40 minutes. “It’s nice because Daniel has a lot of vision and Tanner is really fast,” Becher said of that combination. “I think they’re just starting to figure out how to play together.” Valley would play Temple City this past Monday to complete pool play action of the tournament, then enjoy a few weeks off before visiting Whittier Christian on Jan. 5. The Olympic League season begins on Jan. 12 as the defending league champions visit Windward. “All we really care about is our league and playoffs,” Becher said. “But, the only thing that was talked about was the legacy Fred has. Most people don’t know it but he literally was one of the first high school soccer coaches in Southern California. It’s a privilege to be with a program that’s aware of that.” Preceding the boys game, the Lady Crusaders saw their three-game winning streak against the Tartans end as the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Still, Valley holds a 3-1-3 advantage over St. Margaret’s. “Fred is a guy that a lot of people, over the course of the years, have looked up to,” said Valley head coach Kim Looney. “I’ve had the privilege of playing for Fred and coaching underneath him. To have the opportunity to honor him in such
TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 a game and to play such a classy team like St. Margaret’s…it’s a fun night.” While St. Margaret’s took one shot off of junior Kaydee Crossen in the first half, Valley took four but none came close to finding the back of the net. In the 59th minute, sophomore Natalie Lara raced down the right side, crossed a pass to senior Hayley Haagsma who was two steps in front of St. Margaret’s goalkeeper Patricia Kharazmi but wasn’t able to get a good shot off. Twelve minutes later, a corner kick from senior Leezett Del Toro found its way to junior Michayla Beisel but her point blank shot was unsuccessful. The best chance for the Tartans came with 15 seconds left as Natasha Afshar’s free kick from outside the penalty box went high. “We had told the defense at halftime that they had been giving [St. Margaret’s] too much room,” Looney said. “They have speed and when you give a team room with speed, they’re just going to blow right by you. They did a nice job in the second half. “We’ve been struggling this year finishing in front of the net,” Looney added. “We haven’t broken that barrier yet. I just know that when that eventually does happen, it’s going to rain goals.” In the past seven seasons, Valley has outscored St. Margaret’s 9-5 and none of the contests have been decided by more than two goals. In contrast, Valley had defeated the Tartans by scores of 4-0, 2-0 and 5-2 in the three seasons before the Fred Wind Cup. Valley went to 4-4-2 on the season and will participate in the Ontario Christian Tournament beginning on Monday. “St. Margaret’s is full of soccer tradition,” Looney said. “[St. Margaret’s head coach] John [Marmelstein] has been coaching soccer for 25 plus years and I’ve learned a lot from watching Johns’ teams and I think that’s evident when you see us play. It’s never going to be more than a goal or two that’s going to separate these two teams.”
Valley Christian Succumbs To North Torrance Again in Own Tournament By Loren Kopff The Valley Christian girls basketball program hosted its annual tournament last week but lately, it’s been North Torrance who has not been welcomed guests. Paced by the blistering shooting of Kelly Kika, the Lady Crusaders had no answer for her or the rest of the Saxons and fell 62-39 last Saturday night in the championship game. Last season, North Torrance defeated Gahr in the finals and has now won the Valley Christian Tournament in five out of the last six seasons, going 22-2 since 2004. Kika began the game with three straight three-pointers and added another one following Valley’s first basket of the game. The Saxons would bolt to a 14-2 lead out of the gates and when the night was done, Kika would torch the Lady Crusaders for 36 points, connecting on eight trifectas in 17 attempts. “Kelly Kika is an awesome player and I’ll give her the credit,” said Valley head coach Katie Hardeman. “She found the open spots and was able to knock it down. We weren’t smart; we weren’t able to find her every time.” While Kika was having an easy time finding the open shots, the same couldn’t be said for Valley’s top threats-senior Taylor Cotton and sophomore Kari Korver. Cotton took only two shots from the field in the first half, partly because she was on the bench with three fouls. Korver was two of eight from the field and scored eight points in the half. In fact, when junior Jamie Perez scored the second of her two baskets late in the first quarter, Valley was down 15-9, the closest it would come to North Torrance. The lead grew to 23-11 three minutes
TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 into the second quarter but it wasn’t until the 4:14 mark when Korver scored the first field goal of the stanza for her team. The Saxons ended the half on an 11-2 run. Valley was six of 23 from the field in the half and turned the ball over 16 times. “Defensively, we didn’t want the high post to get the ball, which they did all the time,” Hardeman said. “We wanted to stop their transition on offense and we were unable to do that. We know a lot of things that we need to work on. Offensively, we knew they were going to play a tight man and we had to be able to execute and our shots weren’t falling.” In the third quarter, Kika scored 10 of her team’s 17 points as the Saxons extended their lead to 47-25. Korver scored a team-high 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out three assists. She was named to the all-tournament team as she
COMMUNITY NEWS GROUP • DECEMBER 25, 2009 scored 71 points in the four-game affair. Cotton, who was held to six points, was also named to the all-tournament team. Junior Jelissa Holder scored nine points and had five rebounds while Perez chipped in with eight points and four boards. Valley had previously defeated St. Joseph, El Segundo and Bellflower in pool play action with relative ease. Cotton scored a career-high 20 points against El Segundo. Valley fell to 7-2 with both losses coming in tournament championship games. On Dec. 12, the Lady Crusaders lost to Bonita in the Covina Tournament despite a combined 29 points from Cotton and Korver. “I felt like we’ve improved so much and these strong teams are going to prepare us for CIF and for Windward,” Hardeman said. “We need to find our weaknesses right now and now we see
where they are.” Also participating in the tournament was Gahr and despite a lackluster performance in all four games, the Gladiators held on for a 66-59 win against El Segundo to win third place. Junior Symone Brown poured in a career-high 33 points against the Eagles as the Gladiators blew a 38-20 halftime lead. Brown, who scored 77 points in the four games was named to the all-tournament team as did senior Dana Kanemaru, who had a career-high 13 points last Friday night against Northwood. On Dec. 16, freshman Jewelyn Sawyer had 17 points against Mayfair. Both Gahr and Valley will participate in the Gahr Christmas Tournament which gets under way on Saturday and runs through Wednesday.

About twenty ladies were present, including Marie Carter and The Ford Ladies at their annual Christmas luncheon. Helen Brown from
Norwalk and Phyllis Evans from Pico Rivera. For many years they met in this area but for the past couple of years they’ve met at Mimi’s as that seems to be more central for most of the group. Nikki Higgins of Norco and Linda Hainey of Downey were hostesses this year. Unfortunately, Linda had out-of-state company and was unable to attend. Each guest brings a beautifully packaged unmarked gift. After a delicious lunch numbers are drawn and gifts are chosen. Then the fun begins as guests are allowed to “Steal” the already chosen gifts but no more than three times. This can get pretty loud and other restaurant patrons even joins in the fun sometimes to cheer them on. This year, for the first time in 29 years, to every one’s amazement no one wanted to “Steal”, all were happy with their first gift. This group of warm-hearted women manage to meet several times a year to celebrate the “Big” birthdays, you know, the 5 and 0 years. What a grand group this is. It is a privilege to know each and every one of them. When they have to forego a meeting, they are sorely missed.

and individuals who have never needed assistance before are applying this year. “Considering it’s the toughest time for everybody, Cerritos College students really stepped up and collected amazing amount of donations,” said Gordon Stefenhagen, vice mayor of Norwalk, who started the City of Norwalk Food Basket Program over 20 years ago. “Cerritos College students sure are giving back to their community, and we truly appreciate it.” Celena Murillo, president of the Court Reporting Club, called and visited local grocers and collected over 7,000 food items. “I am grateful of all the local grocers who willingly helped us,” said Murillo. “But a can which individuals donate from their pantry really does count.” “Personally, I am in "awe" of the generosity I have seen this year in donations. The donator can pick which child they would like to buy for, and then return a wrapped gift of clothing back to the bookstore. “This year we received about 25 angels,” said Flovick. He said it took a little longer than before to have all of the angels adopted this year, probably due to the economy. “But they all eventually

In October, Nestlé’s Hispanic Multibrand program, Más de Nestlé, partnered with Superior Grocers to conduct a community-focused in-store promotion that supports Hispanic education in Southern California. The promotion included book distribution drives sourced from valued Nestlé partner Reading is Fundamental, the nation’s largest children’s literacy organization. “Nestlé’s commitment to education continues to be an important driver for our corporate culture, so we are thrilled to be partnering with Superior Grocers, who shares that commitment to Southern California’s children,” said Vanessa Rivera, Manager, Marketing Communications/Multicultural, Nestlé USA. “We understand that education is a priority for Hispanic families, and our goal with this program is to support the community by helping to close the gap on a number of school programs that face reduction or elimination” Schools benefiting from Más de Nestlé and Superior’s donation were selected by the retailer and have a long-standing partnership with the grocery chain. Each store has a corresponding school they donate to on a regular basis via other fundraisers. Through the partnership, Nestlé USA and Superior have donated more than $96,000 in combined funds and books to Southern California children this fall.
mother’s property was a dream come true. "I have a renewed faith in humanity.” The home will be painted, the lawn will be removed, and a new sprinkler system and lawn will be provided by a contractor from Cornerstone Property Services Inc. "December is a slow time for us, and I thought it would be a good way to show our guys we're not just a profit company," said Cornerstone owner Steve Cederquist. Last year, ARCO volunteers cleaned up Denni Park, and were looking for a new project this year when city officials brought the Dyrssen home to their attention. "It's the holidays," ARCO spokeswoman Brenda V. Castillo said. "We want to give back to the community." ARCO's regional headquarters is located in La Palma, and when work on the property ends, about 50 ARCO and City volunteers will have participated including La Palma City Councilman Larry Herman.

Norwalk Mayor's Prayer Breakfast February 10, 2010 By Helen M. Brown Vice-mayor Gordon Stefenhagen announced to the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast (MPB) committee last Tuesday that the date of February 10, 2010 has been confirmed by the Marriott Hotel for the annual MPB. The planning committee has been meeting since September and is very pleased with the progress made thus far. Chamber of Commerce CEO Vivian Hansen has agreed to act as Mistress of Ceremonies and Connie Costa will be the Keynote speaker. The breakfast will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10 and will end at 8:30 a.m. Ariel Selena Rodriquez, a Santa Fe High senior, will honor us with her own rendition of the National Anthem. The California Highway Patrol will serve as Color Guard and will lead the assembly in the renewal of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Each year the committee strives to select well-known and active members of the community, city, and school board to take part in this wonderful and inspirational program. This is a most stressful time for our country with so many of our citizens out of work but this is also a time for miracles. Tickets will go on sale in January. The cost will be $16.00. Remember to mark your calendars. Come out and help our City unite in a morning of prayer for progress, prosperity, and unity during the upcoming year. Most of all remember to pray for our soldiers and veterans, both home and abroad. May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
