Artesia Pre-School students to have graduation program
By Jerry Bernstein Members of the local chapter of Soroptimists International and their guests gathered Mar. 6 in the Sierra Room of the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts to socialize, eat enjoy casino-like games and win prizes, all the while raising funds for local charities. The fun began at 7 p.m. as the participants arrived to find the Sierra Room transformed into an evening in Paris, with a 25-foot cutout of the Eiffel Tower overlooking over the room. Amid the decorations, guests enjoyed a sumptuous dinner catered by Turnip Rose and then took to the tables to “gamble the night away.” Later prizes, including Florida Vacations, Wine Country Tastig, and a Lake Tahoe Getaway were awarded to the most successful gamblers and to the luck raffle winners. Serving as auctioneer was Dr. Robert Hughlett. As the guest filed out on their way home, Soroptimist President Pat Law stated the success of the evening was due to the hard work of the group’s members and the generosity of the attendees – not only for the guests but the community at large.

Dear Editor: I would just like to clarify the article, “ABC Board approved budget cuts to meet $6.5 million deficit” published on March 5, 2010. I would like to start by saying, Mr. Bernstein, that I was surprised but honored that you dedicated two paragraphs in your article based upon my less than five minute speech to the ABC Board. However, there was an important point that was omitted in the article concerning the reason I thought there wasn’t a significant parent turnout. The article states that I said “it was probably apathy by the parents….They should be ashamed of themselves”. Yes, I admit that I did say this but it was in a larger, more important context. So, let me please clarify this statement. The parent turnout was exceptionally poor at the ABC Board meeting held on Tuesday, March 2nd and I was disappointed at the turnout or lack thereof by the community. But, during my speech, I stated that this may be because of one of two reasons. One reason, as Mr. Bernstein stated, could be due to parent apathy. If it is, then shame on us as parents that we aren’t concerned enough to stand up for our children. However, another reason could be the parents just don’t know what’s happening with the budget cuts within the district and the impact it’s having on our teachers, district staff and, ultimately, our children. And, THIS is probably the actual reason why the parents aren’t here. Mr. Gavin Riley made this point in the previous board meeting and reiterated it in the latest board meeting as you explained in your article, Mr. Bernstein that “the public needs to be aware of the

A traffic accident in La Palma today resulted in the arrest of at least one minor on a stolen vehicle charge, causing a temporary lockdown of John F. Kennedy High School, and turned local Cypress Police Chief Mark Yokoyama into a real local crime catching hero. At 11:10 a.m. this morning, at Crescent Chief Mark Yokoyama Avenue and Walker Avenue in La Palma, a crash involving two vehicles took place. One of the cars involved was an SUV that had just been stolen from a local neighborhood. The two drivers of the stolen SUV, both minors, immediately ran from the scene on foot, one going in one direction, and the other heading in the opposite way. Witnessing this entire incident was Cypress Police Chief Mark Yokoyama who just happened to be in La Palma (the city next door to Cypress). So seeing this possible crime in progress, Chief Yokoyama did what any good “beat cop” would do, he took out after the fleeing youth twice his age, on foot. Not only did Yokoyama catch his suspect, he ended up in “good shape, unhurt, and only mess up his uniform,” according to Sgt. Tom Bruce who oversees the media division for the Cypress Police Department. No other word on the status of the other minor suspect who fled the scene and life at Kennedy High School is back to normal. One passenger in the other vehicle was slightly injured and was transported to a local hospital, and is expected to recover fully. So, if you are ever in Cypress or La Palma and commit a crime, just look over your shoulder, and pray that Chief Yokoyama isn’t wearing a pair of sneakers.

Tetzlaff students excel beyond the classroom Student qualifies for state level competition.
Whitney Robotic team members Jerome Red, Darren Chen, Katherine Shen, Tony Dai, Shafqat Huq, Vignesh Raja, Mindy Huang, Ian Villa, Michael Clark, Danjoseph Quijada, Lorenzo Gutierrez, Vicky Helus and Lynne Chen at the First Tech Challenge Competition held Jan. 30 in Las Vegas where their robot won first place. Whitney High School students won the FIRST Tech Challenge Winning Alliance Award (Team Captain) and Think Award in Las Vegas Competition Jan. 25 for their robot. The team led the winning alliance in the final match of the competition. The Think Award is given to the team that best reflects the “journey” the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the building season. The judges commented the team’s outstanding engineering notebook focused on the design and building stage of the team’s robot. Journal entries describing the steps, brainstorms, designs, re-designs, successes, and those ‘interesting moments’ when
things didn’t go as planned. However the team ‘s tenacity, perseverance, and can-do attitude was evidenced by their amazing First Place win! The team will now go to Atlantia, Georgia for the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship to be held April 14 – 17, at the Georgia Dome and World Congress Center. One hundred FTC teams from around the world will be eligible to participate in the FTC World Championship. As the Captain team of the Winning Alliance at Las Vegas FTC Championship Tournament, the Whitney team is automatically eligible to participate in the FTC World Championship.
In its second year of participation in the National Geographic Bee, Tetzlaff Middle School is proud to announce that Gene Young Lee (David) qualified to represent the school, on April 9, at the state level competition in Sacramento. The event is sponsored by National Geographic, Google, and Plum Creek and if David wins, the next step would advance him to the national competition in Washington D.C., on May 25 and 26. The final round of the 2010 National Geography Bee, featuring Alex Trebec, will air on the National Geographic Channel on May 26. In addition two Tetzlaff students won top honors in the Third Annual Los Angeles Lakers Organization and Youth Foundation’s “Freedom Through My Eyes” essay and art contest. The contest selects only five winners each year and Tetzlaff took two of the five top honors. They are Alyssa Boey and Tiffany Kim. They will be going to Washington D.C. the weekend of Mar. 25 and received Laker tickets (floor seats) to the Lakers game on April 11. Tetzlaff officials said they were very proud of David, Alyssa, and Tif Tiffany! The said it was a testament to the dedication and hard work of the teachers of Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy.

Cerritos Crime Summary March 1-7, 2010 Eighteen Part I felony crimes were investigated by Cerritos Sheriff’s Station personnel last week, down from twenty-six the week before. Residential burglaries and vehicle thefts remained the same as robberies, commercial burglaries, and vehicle burglaries dropped. Field deputies handled 289 calls for service last week, up from 282 the previous reporting period. The 2010 weekly average in calls for service is now 299. GREAT NEWS! There were no reported robberies last week. Two residential burglaries were again investigated last week. An unlocked door and an unlocked window allowed entry where luggage and jewelry were stolen. The new 2010 weekly average in residential burglaries is 2.3. We remind residents to make an “exit check” each time they leave the home. Make sure that all doors

and windows are secured, even if the weather is warm. Don’t present an opportunity for a burglar to enter your home with ease. When you return, you can “air out” the residence in a short period of time. This is a much safer practice than finding valuable property stolen when you get back. Four commercial burglaries were logged compared to six the week before. Lockers were targeted at a school and a fitness center where a wallet and an I-Phone were taken. Two closed businesses were also involved after front windows were shattered. Tools were stolen in one of those cases and no loss was reported in the other. The 2010 weekly average in this crime category is 3.1. Vehicle burglaries dropped from six to three last week. High-volume commercial parking lots were the venue in two crimes last week. All three vehicles were SUVs. Rear seats and a purse were missing. The new 2010 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7. Think twice about the property you leave in your vehicle, and especially an SUV. If it is valuable and important
to you, consider leaving it at home or taking it with you when you exit the vehicle. Valuable items left within the passenger compartment make it just too easy for the thief. Vehicle thefts remained the same at five last week for the third consecutive week. High-volume commercial parking lots were involved in four cases. Two Hondas, two SUVs and, a Toyota were involved. The 2010 weekly average in vehicle thefts is 5.2. It is very important that you use some form of an anti-theft device to retain your vehicle. Visible deterrents, such as a steering wheel locking device, are the most obvious and tell the wouldbe thief to look elsewhere. These are important especially of you own one of the two most stolen makes in California, which are Honda and Toyota. A great deal of success has been demonstrated by tracking devices that can lead law enforcement directly to the location of a stolen vehicle. These systems cost a little more and require a monthly fee, but are very effective.

success in school, and parental support and commitment are vital. “Teachers and coaches are important, but a child needs parents to cheer him on each step of the way.” Sanchez reminded the parents that nothing is impossible and shared her own personal story of parental involvement. Both parents were immigrants with little education and they still raised seven children who graduated from college. “They believed that if you work hard, you could accomplish anything. They not only told us, they showed us.” She remembers that each of her siblings had to find a part-time job at fifteen to learn the value of a dollar. Sanchez surprised her father when she said that she wanted to work along side her father in a machine shop. “My father grew up in a culture where a woman’s place is in the home or at least cleaning something,” so he put her to work cleaning machine parts. At the end of the day, her hands were

Recreation Commissioner Dena Louredco told the council that ending the program would have a negative effect on the children, especially those who will enter kindergarten who had been looking forward to a graduation program. My speech and commentary about the parent turnout was building up to support the very point that Mr. Riley presented and that most important point was omitted in the article. Let’s please make an effort to reach the parents and let them know the crisis we’re in and explain the decisions that have to be made and why. Have the teachers and the Board members address the community together to answer their questions and address their concerns. I’m sure if the parents are informed about the impacts and the future budget concerns of the District that our parents will rally with the Board, the teachers and all of the district staff to find ways to continue our success as one of the best school districts in Southern California despite our budget challenges

so dirty that she wasn’t able to get them totally clean. “As a young lady of fifteen, I knew that having dirty hands would not be very attractive to other people.” Her father showed his hands to her and reminded Sanchez that if she didn’t go to college, she may have to deal with dirty hands her entire life. “My father showed me that day the importance of an education.” Her mother also taught by example. Once all of her children were in school, she went to adult school, then community college, and eventually graduated from college with a teaching credential at 48. “I m proud of both of my parents who always motivated me to do my best.” Sanchez concluded by reminding parents that they are a powerful force in their children’s lives and they need to be there to help them overcome their fears and accomplish their goals. Current ABC School Board President Celia Spitzer thanked the parents who attended the Conference and reminded them that they are an integral part of the education that takes place in the District. “Without your support, it would make the teachers’ jobs more difficult. The first teacher is always the parent, so thank
you for being involved.” ABC Adult School Principal Dr. PaoLing Guo proudly announced that student achievement is always the District’s first priority and ABC Council PTA President Louise Dodson encouraged the parents to learn new learning strategies that will help them to support their children better, and reminded them that “these are very tough economic times, so we need to work even more closely with our schools.” After breakfast, parents and educators were encouraged to attend numerous sessions to assist them in understanding how to be more effective with children. Topics included the importance of eating nutritious foods, financially planning for college, guiding children through responsible internet web sites, and how to seek extra assistance if their child is reading below grade level. Other sessions discussed bringing back integrity to high school sports and showing how parents can use progress reports and report cards to support and improve student learning. Parents and educators alike felt the sessions were productive and were looking forward to next year’s
other damage arising from a substantial leak in its roof. The estimated cost of a new roof is $65,000 with a rough estimate for interior damage at $31,000. The California Joint Powers Insurance Authority [JPIA] agreed to pay the cost of protecting the roof protecting from pending rains. Cost to the city for the repairs will be $22,000 and will be paid by the city’s Redevelopment Agency. The work will be done by the JPIA through a claim by the city. They would also retain the contractor. The Council also agreed to place a request by the Artesia Chamber of Commerce for financial support on a future agenda when it discusses the budget for the next fiscal year. The Council held over to its next meeting a request to fund a the July 4
fireworks display in Artesia Park when a full council would be present. Councilmember Sally Flowers was absent and Councilmember Larry Nelson left the meeting early due to illness. The Council approved a request by the Artesia Farmer’s Market to accommodate the market on the southeast corner of Artesia Park along South Street and Elaine. The Market is currently held at City Plaza. The Market will operate on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will relocate on April 7. Operator Lee Ostendorf said the reason for the request is the present site is not working out. The market is located inside City Plaza and is hidden from the public right-of-way on South Street. The proposed Artesia Park site is a move visible location.

Valley Christian dominated by Serra in V-AA finals By Loren Kopff SANTA ANA-If you want to go by the historical experience of playing in a California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section divisional championship game, then the Valley Christian girls basketball program had the advantage over Serra. But if you go by the recent experience, then Serra owns that over the Lady Crusaders. While V.C. was appearing in its 19th championship game, but the first since 2004, Serra was making a second straight trip back to the Division V-AA finals. The recent experience paid off for the Cavaliers as they blistered V.C. in almost every category and went wire to wire in a 66-47 win last Friday night at the Meruelo Athletic Center on the Mater Dei High campus. It was the first championship for Serra, which denied the Lady Crusaders their first crown since 2000. Serra owned the advantage in field goal percentage (45.6-31.7) and rebounding (42-24), two major points of the game from the opening tip-off to the final whistle. V.C. also turned the ball over 24 times, seven more than Serra. “We said we would have to play our “A” game to beat this team and we didn’t,” said V.C. head coach Katie Hardeman. “We played maybe a “B-“game. I told the girls we were going to make them beat us from the outside. “ 2010 SOFTBALL PREVIEW
Area teams stockpiled with freshmen and sophomores, revamped pitching staffs By Loren Kopff There’s nothing like building for the future and if the 2010 softball season is any indication of what lies ahead for the next three to four seasons, then expect a lot of good things from the majority of the area teams. Norwalk will try to win the Suburban League for a second straight season while Cerritos, Gahr and Valley Christian hope to move up in their respective league standings. Artesia and John Glenn welcome new head coaches and will try to move out of the Suburban League cellar. Muepo also had 10 rebounds as did Rejane Verin as the starting five for Serra consisted of four seniors and one junior. “This team was bigger, faster, stronger, more experienced than us,” Hardeman said. “They should have won by 20 at least. “They only knew one way to go and it works for us.” After seeing what the Suburban League had to offer last season, especially with La Mirada, Mayfair and Norwalk tying for first place with 10-2 records, Medina is much more comfortable with the league this season and knows that his team can compete even more than last season. From 2003-2006, the Lady Dons finished in either second or third place. “Last year our goal was to finish better than we did the previous year,” Medina said. “We never really thought about playoffs until the end. This year, our goal is to make playoffs. We’re not looking at anything beneath the playoffs. We’re setting the goals higher.”
Longtime and successful Artesia Punishers travel ball coach Bob Medina stepped into the high school coaching role last season and took a struggling Cerritos program to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. What made that even more remarkable was the fact that there were five freshmen and two sophomores on that team. While two of those players aren’t back this season, the Lady Dons continue to bring in more young players. “They gave me more than I expected,” Medina said of last season’s team. “It was a learning experience and they had to buy into it. They had to start working on the program that we’re trying to apply. What we expected was to come in there and teach every day. I quoted, not in the beginning, but in the end we’re going to open peoples’ eyes. I think we accomplished our goal.” Sarah Smith is on her way to becoming one of the most prolific catchers in the area, and is the team’s lead-off hitter. Alyssa Marquez and Nikki Rosenburger are two more top hitters while Kaylilani Minami and Miki Okazaki have had much success in the circle as all-stars of the Cerritos Girls Softball Association. In fact, Medina is trying to use the CGSA as a pipeline for players to come to Cerritos High School once they become freshmen and is already looking ahead to the incoming class of next season. “Last year the freshmen we had really bought into our program,” Medina said.
GAHR (11-16 last season, 6-4 in the San Gabriel Valley League, third place, lost to St. Bonaventure 4-0 in the Division III wild card) Head coach: Mike Rogers (fourth season, 53-34) Team’s record previous five seasons: 8854-1 Key losses: Brittney Miller, Holly Sloan Projected starting lineup: P-Valerie Rios (SR)/Marissa Frese (JR)/ Maya Varela (SO) C-Josee’Ayala (SO)/Krystal Purkey (SO)/ Erica Willig (JR) 1B-Ayala/Varela 2B-Jasmine Ruiz (JR)/Catherine Gonzalez (SR) 3B-Nani Mejia (JR)/Varela SS-Olivia Arredondo (SR) OF-Gonzalez/Amber Giron (JR) OF-Willig/Karina Gonzales (JR) OF-Erika Jackson (SR)/Alyssa Nava (SO)/Jessica Soto (JR)
Clinton last season and sees a bright future for Artesia. “It’s great because I was here last year and I already know a lot of the girls,” Zamora said of becoming the new head coach. “So, that is a big plus with that. Also, a lot of the girls who we had last year know what to expect from me. I am able to raise the bar a little bit with them.” Due to the ineligibility of several players, the Pioneers didn’t have a junior varsity team in 2009. So, up to 17 players were on varsity and most of them were freshmen and sophomores. Chelsea Small was the primary shortstop last season while Reanna Guzman returns after a one year absence. They will replace Alyssa Alcala, who had been a four-year pitcher. Guzman, Small and Kira Ito are expected to be the top hitters while Erica Rivera is a solid outfielder. “There are a few things I’m looking forward to,” Zamora said. “One, our infield is primarily made up of a lot of juniors and freshmen. A lot of girls who are juniors were on the team last year. So, they really provide a lot of leadership. In addition to that, it really establishes a tradition we can start right now.” The big question will be if Artesia can finish somewhere other than sixth or seventh place in the Suburban League. Zamora, along with assistant Catherine (Holland) Hernandez, who was a 2003 Artesia graduate, may not be playing for the present, but wants to reach the playoffs next season with the young group they will be working with this season. “Realistically, if we go .500, I’ll be happy with that,” Zamora said. “In our league, we definitely have some teams who stand out, then you have a couple of teams who will rotate around. I really believe we can beat one of those teams this year. Hopefully we’ll surprise some teams.” CERRITOS (8-17 last season, 5-7 in the Suburban League, tied for fourth place, lost to Millikan 6-0 in the Division II wild card) Head coach: Bob Medina (second season, 8-17) Team’s record previous five seasons: 4877-1
After advancing to the quarterfinals in each of the previous two seasons, it was a very frustrating 2009 campaign for Mike Rogers, who has done a stellar job in revitalizing the Gahr program, Before his arrival, the Gladiators had gone five straight seasons of finishing in third or fourth place in the San Gabriel Valley League. But last season began with an ominous start as Rogers didn’t get the pitcher he was looking for. Coupled with a couple of key injuries, the offense managed to hit .302 in the regular season while the
TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211
pitching staff had an earned run average of 5.22. “I think we could have done a lot better,” Rogers said. “We were very inconsistent defensively. Going into the playoffs, I felt we could have competed and win that first game and go farther in the playoffs. We underachieved as a team.” Nani Mejia (.408, eight doubles) is the team’s leading hitter but is currently sidelined with an injury and may not return until league season begins. Jasmine Ruiz (.371, 15 RBI, four home runs), Erika Jackson (.333, 15 RBI, six doubles) and Olivia Arredondo (.288, 13 RBI, three home runs) are also strong hitters. Marissa Frese should complement Valarie Rios in the circle while the Erica Willig, who played most of last season in left field and at first base, moves to center where her speed and vast knowledge of the game will help solidify the outfield. Gahr will once again be tested with a very competitive non-league slate that includes doubleheaders with Millikan and Bishop Montgomery and a game against Pacifica. Downey and Warren are expected to be chased by Gahr in the league. “With the new additions and the maturity of the girls, we should be a lot more competitive than we were last year,” Rogers said. JOHN GLENN (4-18 last season, 2-10 in the Suburban League, sixth place) Head coach: Armando Sarinana (first season) Team’s record previous five seasons (1988) Key losses: Lyndsay Castelo, Jackie DeAvila, Ashley Lopez, Bianca Martinez, Brenda Nava, Sachelly Ramos, Jaclyn Zertuche Projected starting lineup: P-Denise Ponce (SO)/Desiree Hindman (SO)/Jessica Amaya (JR) C-Karla Lomeli (JR)/Vanessa Mejia (JR) 1B-Vanessa Castro (SR) 2B-Hindman 3B-Mejia SS-Amaya OF-Jennifer Alvarez (SR)/Miranda Mar Martinez (SR)/Alyssa Robledo (SR) OF-Gabby Cruz (FR) OF-Kathian Barajas (SR)/Alvarez/Mar (SR)/Alvarez/Martinez/Robledo
As is the case with Artesia’s softball program, John Glenn is hoping that a change in head coaches will put an end to the long playoff drought that dates back to 1990. Armando Sarinana replaces Pam Trimble, who had been the head coach for the past nine seasons. He previously coached the freshman team at Diamond Bar but this is his first head coaching job and brings a high level of energy with him. “It’s a pretty big challenge because of the fact that you have to get the girls to recognize that change is coming,” Sarinana said. “It’s going to take some time but as long as you press to the girls that the change is going to be good, then they kind of mold to it. It’s a hard struggle but they’re starting to come around little by little.” Sarinana was immediately challenged when we took over a team that has only three returning players-Jennifer Alvarez, Karla Lomeli and Denise Ponce. But, he was quick to say that it’s easier to break bad habits with only three returning players. Ponce raised a lot of eyes last season with her slow pitching, which frustrated the top hitters of the Suburban League. Look for her to be faster this season. She and Desiree Hindman had been all-stars for the Norwalk Girls Softball Association “The ones who weren’t here last year… we’re going to push them a little bit to get the leadership qualities that we’re looking for and also mold our underclassmen,” Sarinana said. “It’s not so much more of a varsity [team] and we really don’t care about our J.V. girls. We’re trying to build a program, varsity and J.V. We’re going to
COMMUNITY NEWS GROUP • MARCH 12, 2010
ask [our seniors] to do a lot to help out our J.V. girls as well.” NORWALK (19-12 last season, 10-2 in the Suburban League, tri-champions, lost to Don Lugo 1-0 in the Division II first round) Head coach: Paulette Gasporra (seventh season, 86-66-1) Team’s record previous five seasons: 8151-1 Key losses: Michelle Contreras, Celina Hernandez, Stephanie Jimenez Projected starting lineup: P-Cassandra Caro (JR)/Lorraine Fitzger Fitzgerald (JR)/Elizabeth Jimenez (SR)/Vanessa Venegas (SO) C-Claudia Torres (JR)/Crystal Cano (FR) 1B-Jimenez/Courtney Fischer (SR) 2B-Ilene Vasquez (SO)/Alexis Velazquez (JR) 3B-Jimenez/Torres SS-Anai Zarate (JR)/Caro OF-Jasmine Valenzuela (JR) OF-Fitzgerald OF-Jordan Ancona (SR)/Monica Gallardo (JR)
Everything fell in place for Paulette Gasporra and her team last season. The Lancers posted a rare win against Suburban League nemesis La Mirada and took home a piece of the league title. But, to duplicate that feat this season, it will take a lot more because Norwalk lost twotime league pitcher of the year, Stephanie Jimenez, and a .506 hitter in Michelle Contreras. “It was exciting and in the past, we’ve improved every year,” Gasporra said. “Our goal last year was to take league and we got a piece of it. Our main thing was softball had not had a banner in the gym and now we have one.” Gasporra stated that the Lancers will focus more on defense this season and will employ a four-man pitching staff until the league season begins. Three of those four did not throw a pitch last season but Lor-
raine Fitzgerald (.429, 21 runs) and Elizabeth Jimenez (.324) are two of the top hitters coming back and Fitzgerald also has speed as she stole 14 bases in 2009. Seven of the nine everyday players batted at least .324, including Claudia Torres (.418, 28 RBI) and the team hit .382 with 50 doubles. Vanessa Venegas pitched in only two innings and faced seven batters. “Each one of them has their own pitch,” Gasporra said of her pitching staff. “Last year you knew we were going to use Stephanie and you knew how Stephanie threw. Now with using the four, it’s going to be different. You’re not going to know who to see in the circle.” VALLEY CHRISTIAN (11-13-1 last season, 4-4 in the Olympic League, tied for third place, lost to West Covina 6-1 in the Division V first round) Head coach: Richard Avila (second season, 11-13-1) Team’s record previous five seasons: 6962-1 Key losses: Charlene Bousema, Chelsea Brubaker, Beverly Bultsma Projected starting lineup: P-Lina Avila (SR)/McKenzie Goff (SO) C-Emily Craig (SR)/Sydney Nelson (SO) 1B-Avila/Goff 2B-Tatum Schultz (SO) 3B-Bri Dupuy (SO)/Taylor Winters (FR) SS-Leanne Garrels (FR) OF-Ashley Snyder (SO) OF-Lexie Snyder (SR) OF-Louisa Bakker (SR)/Kelyn Struiksma (SO) Things were looking bleak for the Lady Crusaders on Apr. 21, 2009 when they had lost their third straight Olympic League game. But Valley Christian rallied and won four of its last five regular season games, then a one-game playoff with Paraclete to get into the postseason. This season, Richard Avila doesn’t want to get off to another slow start and is more than confident his young but experienced team will perform much better.
13
“With the new coaching staff and the new philosophy, they finally bought into the system we were trying to incorporate,” Avila said. “Overall, they did a good job.” Injuries have hampered V.C. the past few seasons, especially with Lina Avila, a power hitter who batted only .250 last season and Ashley Oxley, who is lost for this season with a hip injury. But, the Lady Crusaders still have enough with Avila, Tatum Schultz (.288) and Emily Craig (.309, 16 RBI, three home runs). Craig recently committed to Concordia University and with her batting right behind Avila, V.C. is a major force to be reckon with this season. “She’s worked her tail off, she’s an outstanding student of the game and she takes pride in her craft,” Richard Avila said. “Obviously there’s room for improvement but right now if we were to pick all-league [members], Emily Craig hands down would be our first team allleague catcher.” When Lina Avila isn’t pitching, McKenzie Goff is an up and coming star. The infield is shaping up to be an exciting one with freshman sensation Leanne Garrels and Schultz a perfect double play combination. The Snyder sisters-Ashley and Lexie-will patrol the outfield and Lexie is committed to the College of the Arts in Savannah, GA. Sophomore Natalie Lara will provide lots of speed coming off the bench as a pinch runner. “The sky’s the limit for this team,” Avila said. “We’re a year older, a year wiser and obviously we’re a year stronger. I think they’re on the same page as [the coaching staff]. I’m looking forward to an exciting season. “
