L.A. Opera and Cerritos Elementary School Choir Perform to Proud Parents By Larry Caballero Patricia Nixon Elementary School veteran teacher of 36 years Be Be Smith was very excited to learn that the LA Opera Educational Program wanted to send professional singers to the Cerritos school and perform with her school choir students. “The children were really excited when they were told that they would be per-

Treated and released after “possible overdose". Norwalk - Gina Ramirez, a member of the Little Lake City School Board and wife of Norwalk City Councilman Rick Ramirez was hospitalized, treated and released on Wednesday night for the effects of a “possible overdose.” Norwalk Sheriff’s Watch Commander Ralph Gama said that Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff’s units both responded to a medical treatment assistance call to the Ramirez’s home located in North Norwalk at the 11000 block of

Pluton Avenue at around 10 p.m. According to Commander Gama, this was not “suicide” related. Gina Ramirez was taken to a local hospital, and was treated and released early Thursday morning. It was not known if Councilman Ramirez was at home during this incident. Norwalk City Councilman Rick Ramirez, 41, was arrested on October 24th for making "criminal threats" against his wife. He was held on a $50,000 bail and released and will be appearing in LA County Superior Court on November 20th for formal arraignment. During that incident, Deputies took Councilman Ramirez into custody and booked him on one Felony count of making a "criminal threat." Gina Ramirez is currently serving as Clerk of the Little Lake School Board of Education. She announced earlier this summer that she would not be seeking another term citing "personal family" matters.Rick Ramirez remains as a member of the Norwalk City Council. They have three children.

Norwalk Employee William (Bill) Clark Retires By Helen M. Brown Family, friends, and co-workers attended a merry celebration at the home of Bill and his wife, Mary Ann, in Fullerton on Saturday October 17th at 5:00 p.m. The long-awaited retirement came after thirty four years of community service, most of it in the City of Norwalk. The party was catered by Summit Event Catering out of Fullerton. On hand for the festivities were Bill’s Uncle Jim and Aunt Ethel Clark; they make their home in Norwalk and are active in the Norwalk Community Coordinating Council (NCCC). Bill began his career of community service right out of college and spent the majority of the following years at Norwalk City Hall where he served in Small Business Administration Department. He was raised in Norwalk and graduated from John Glenn High School. In his senior year he was elected by Norwalk American Legion Post #359 to attend Boys State. This is a week long workshop on Leadership in Government. These elected members learn the nuts and bolts of government. During the week they hold mock elections and hold offices such as senators, congressmen, etc. At the end of the week two students, out of the approximately 400 in attendances, are elected to go to Washington, DC for further training.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our future leaders. Many of these privileged young people have gone on to run and be elected for senators, congressmen, governors, etc. The many of Bill and Mary Ann’s friends attending this momentous occasion included Councilman Gordon Stefenhagen and wife, Marilee; City Manager Ernie Garcia and wife, Diane; Jesse Urquidi and wife Lori with daughter Elise Grace; Brenda, Paul_ along with many others from City Hall. Special mention should go to Joey, Bill’s boyhood friend from JGHS. Bill is currently serving his third year as president of the NCCC and plans to finish out his term. Guests were invited to take part in a ‘Roast’ for Bill. At that time, Bill was thoroughly insulted by those nearest and dearest to him. It was a hilarious time. The NCCC board members present presented Bill and Mary Ann with matching sets of luggage. Mary Ann is retiring in February and they plan to do a lot of traveling so now they are prepared. The NCCC was represented by Ways & Means Chair, Gordon Stefenhagen; Luncheons & Banquets Chair, Helen Brown; Historian, Marlene Hardy; and Auditor, Elizabeth Aumua. Bill and Mary Ann are a most gracious and giving couple and have dedicated their lives to helping others especially in their on-going work to eradicate breast cancer. It is with this in mind that all present wished them the very best in their future plans and joy and happiness in their travels.... Bon Voyage and God bless!

Artesia High Makes Improvements to William J. Atkins Stadium By Loren Kopff Image is everything and when the Artesia Pioneers conduct athletic events, commencement ceremonies or any other functions at William J. Atkins Stadium, spectators will be marveled at the improved digs that were either completed in late September, or will soon be completed. What started as a discussion roughly two or three years ago by Artesia principal Sergio Garcia, among others, finally became a reality. “If you’re going to improve a school, whether it’s academics or athletics, you also have to have nice facilities, Garcia said. “If you look at our campus, we haven’t just improved the stadium. We have made improvements to other parts of the campus. You have to give kids things to be proud of. You have to make sure the community is proud of the school. All of the changes made at the stadium is clearly noticeable and is now one of the finest facilities in the area. Gone is the dirt track that used to encompass the playing field, replaced by an all-weather surface just like the one at Hanford Rants Stadium on the Gahr High School campus. Gone are the splintered-filled wooden bleachers, replaced by metal bleachers on both sides of the stadium, including handicap sections. What was once chained fencing separating the bleachers from the field is now a solid, vertical metal fence. No longer is the concession stand located next to the bathrooms on the southeast corner of the facility. Now, the new and improved concession stand, still not 100 percent completed, sits behind the north end zone. But probably the biggest change that will open a lot of eyes to visitors is the scoreboard on the south side of the stadium. Unlike the customary high school scoreboards at most stadiums, Artesia’s will be able to post names and messages. Ironically, two

of the last four high schools the football team has visited have message centers on the scoreboards-Laguna Hills and Edison, in Huntington Beach. “It’s not just a football stadium, Garcia said. “We actually get to use it for multiple functions. I hope to be able to put all of the kids names on it. I hope to be able to display different messages through it. “I think it adds to the game, Garcia added. “It adds to whatever activity is there. For track, we’re able to display the winners’ names. Why not do something like that? In addition, the stadium also has a state of the art sound system and the school is able to burn DVD’s of athletic events directly from the system located in the press See ARTESIAon Page 12

have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN?" Right, Lou? If by "go beyond" you mean "cut the crud." Dobbs quit CNN once before, in 1999. He spent two years as chief executive at Space.com. That's an odd place for a guy who dislikes aliens so much. CNN is set to announce a replacement today. If they want continuity, I suggest they hire David Duke. I guess Lou Dobbs had a simple choice? Quit telling racist lies, or go to Fox. But then, does Lou really want to be with a network that has the same name as a former President of Mexico? It may be in the works. In September, Dobbs met with Roger Ailes. Don't think they met over dinner, or they would still be at the table. A representative for Fox said "We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business." OK, but you guys lie about what everybody else is doing. I assume you'll lie about what you've been doing. If Lou lands at Fox, he'll be in good company on the "spreading disinformation" front. Last night Sean Hannity admitted that his show used footage from Glen Beck's 9/12 rally to illustrate a piece about last week's much smaller healthcare rally. (http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/12/ hannity-screwed-up). Somebody should check to make sure that that wasn't old footage of Sean Hannity talking about something else. Hannity said Jon Stewart on the Daily Show pointed out that we had played some incorrect video on this program last week" Incorrect? Give yourself credit. I'm sure it was correct in the sense that that's

exactly what you meant to do. Sean then said "It was an inadvertent mistake, but a mistake none the less." Mistake? How do you make that mistake? "Jerry, download the footage from yesterday's rally from the cameras. And make sure you don't accidentally go into the vault and grab some two-month old footage of another event. It's labeled '9-12,' by the way." Nice. We switch the tapes, you see if you can spot it. Here's hoping Lou Dobbs finds a home at Fox. They deserve each other.

Albertsons Stores Kick Off Feed A Family Holiday Campaign Purchasing a $1 or $5 paper icon will give needy families a holiday meal with all the trimmings. The holidays are a time for families to gather and celebrate their good fortune around a table filled with plenty to eat. But this season, more families will find themselves with fewer resources to make even the simplest meal possible. To keep the holiday spirit of giving alive, Albertsons and Lucky is sponsoring “Feed a Family” holiday program. From November through December, all Albertsons and Lucky stores in Southern California and Southern Nevada are selling $1 and $5 “Turkey Bucks” coupons. With the funds raised, complete turkey dinners, with all the traditional holiday fixings, will be purchased and distributed to local food banks or agencies in time to provide a Thanksgiving or holiday meal to families who otherwise may go without. “Our Albertsons and Lucky customers are especially generous during the holiday season, and they look for ways to help those less fortunate in their communities,” said Sue Klug, President, Albertsons Southern California Division. “We hope our customers will find the Albertsons/ Lucky Feed a Family program to be an easy and convenient way for them to truly impact families, especially as difficult economic conditions have led to unprecedented demands on food banks.” The Feed a Family program is being offered at Albertsons and Lucky stores across the Southern California and Southern Nevada region, as well as at Albertsons stores in the states of Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, and the cities of Elko, Nevada and Williston, North Dakota. The turkey dinners will go to each community’s local food bank or hunger relief agency to help those in need in that area.

Don Giovanni Attempts to Conquer Cerritos By Glen Creason A goodly crowd of opera-philes gathered at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday evening to take in yet another in the nice trend of small troupe performances of the art form. In this case it was the retelling or singing of the ever-popular Don Giovanni that features the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the memorable libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The original title was loosely translated as “the rake’s punishment” and certainly the character of this Don Juan, sometimes called “licentious nobleman” and other times the less appetizing “serial rapist” has been mulled over for two centuries. This production at Cerritos by the six year old Mozart Festival Opera kept the production at no-frills but offered solid performances from the key players in the work. The plot-line is straight out of soap opera literature with the caddish Don Giovanni preying on young women and using his social position and shallow promises to seduce, then abandon to a life of being ostracized by “decent” society. On one evil hand is the sleazy Don Giovanni and his right hand man of nefarious dealings Leporello. On the other is a team of moralists who try to expose his lies and make the Don pay for his crimes. In this group

we have Donna Anna whose father was murdered by Don Giovanni; her betrothed who is bent on revenge for that same murder; and Dona Elvira, a woman spurned by the Don after taking advantage who is set on spreading the bad word about his dark deeds. Also caught up in the web of Don Giovanni’s nefarious chasing is Zerlina, the peasant girl and Masetto her feckless husband. The plot has more twists and turns than the Pacific Coast highway with weddings wrecked, ruses exposed, spurned lovers rally mobs to avenge the skullduggery and cemetery scenes that possess wisdom and foreboding. The Cerritos show had plenty of good singing and strong exposition of the story that unfolds over the three hours of mostly dialogue. There are some memorable arias, especially “Il Mio Tessoro” sung beautifully by Benjamin Brecher as Don Ottavio and all of the principles were fine, especially Vytautas Juozapaitis as the terrible Don and Stefano DePeppo as Leporello who both the played their parts slightly tongue in cheek, therefore making the lead character more of a pompous fool than the downright criminal that he is in fact. All of the ladies shone, especially Viara Zhelizova as Zerlina who sings her heart out in "Vedrai, carino." Healthy Living

As a kid I always thought that my dentist was trying to make holes in my teeth with that little pokey thing. As I later found out that was impossible. My dentist was merely trying to detect small soft decaying spots on the chewing surface of my teeth. (Sorry Dr. Parker.) Dentistry involves more that checking teeth. Dentists check the health of the supporting structures that keep teeth locked in solid and we look for any soft tissue changes or abnormalities that could lead to serious consequences later on. Your dentist may require you to update your health history at regular intervals. I recommend annual updates or notification of any change of medications or health status. The soft tissue exam will start with a visual inspection of the face, skin, lips, cheeks, tongue and floor of the mouth. The dentist or hygienist will gently pull the tongue from side to side and check the floor of the mouth for any lumps. Some dentists have invested in specialized equipment to screen their patients for early invisible cancer growths. If positive signs are noted then more diagnostic tests may be necessary. Why is this important? The death rate in the United States for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin's disease, cancer of the brain, liver, testes, kidney, or ovary. The doctor will check the condition of your bite and look for any sign of damage to the TMJ. The TMJ is the hinge joint area that allows your jaw to move. Clicking or even popping may be more than an annoyance and lead to more devastating joint damage. Specialist referral or treatment with a night guard may be the next step. If the bite is off or teeth are crowded you may get a referral to the orthodontist. The periodontal exam concentrates on the gum area around the teeth. The gums should be firm and pink. They should not bleed or ooze pus. They should not be abraded and receded away from over aggressive brushing or swollen from brushing neglect. The color and texture of the gums, any tooth mobility, gum recession, and bone loss will be noted. The hygienist will measure the gap between your gums and where they attach to the tooth. This is the “pocket” and normal healthy pockets are 2-3 mm deep. Beyond that depth and cleaning becomes difficult. The best tooth brushing and flossing techniques will not go below 3mm.and clean the deeper pockets. Finally, the oral exam will involve checking the teeth. The list of dental conditions includes decay, white spots, abrasion, erosion, attrition, abnormal wear, fractures, cracked fillings, leaky crowns, bad fitting removable bridges and dentures, and loose bridges. Periodically, x-rays will be taken and examined for decay between the teeth, bone loss around

the teeth, abscesses, cysts, and tumors. Your dentist and hygienist are very sensitive to spotting abnormal signs. However, if you notice anything not right please inform your dental team. For answers to your dental questions, contact Douglas Urban, D.D.S. Cerritos, CA 90703 562 924-1523 www.DrDouglasUrban.com

Call (714) 523-4327 I was told that I have nerve deafness and that hearing aids would not help me. Is this true?

Many people have been told this over the years, but it is not necessarily true. The majority of people who have “nerve deafness,” or sensorineural hearing loss, improve their hearing through the use of hearing aids. There is no medicine or surgery to repair the inner ear, so these hearing impaired individuals need amplification systems to hear their loved ones. Improvements in computer-chip technology have also made hearing aid systems and assistive listening devices (ALDs) much more advanced than years ago. They are available now to make your life, and those of your loved ones, much easier.

It was a battle between the two leaders of the San Gabriel Valley League but also a battle between a pair of state leaders when Gahr’s football team hosted Warren last Friday night at Rants Stadium. Senior quarterback Casey Nielsen, first in the state in passing yardage was facing off against Warren’s Jesse Callier, tops in rushing yardage in the state. Both players put up their respective numbers but the Gladiators found themselves trailing all night and couldn’t recover in a 35-31 setback. The loss allowed the Bears to clinch the league championship and in the process, open a two game lead over Gahr, Dominguez, Downey and Lynwood as the regular season ends tonight. Gahr is now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. “I think both of us knew whoever got the lead first was probably going to win it,” said Gahr head coach Greg Marshall. “They got it first. [Callier] came in at us and we weren’t ready for him. We haven’t seen anybody like him. I think we handled him after the first couple of drives.” Warren scored twice on its first two possessions with Callier touching the ball on seven straight plays after an incomplete pass and adding touchdown runs of 12 and 38 yards. The hosts cut into that lead with 3:39 left in the first quarter when Nielsen hooked up with his favorite target, senior wide receiver Shaan Johnson for 26 yards. But on the first play of the second quarter, Callier’s 12-yard score made it a 21-7 game. Nielsen would be picked off by Jamil Magee three plays later and the mis-

cue led to Callier’s fourth touchdown, a four-yard run with 7:12 left in the half. Magee would almost have another interception when Gahr got the ball back, but Nielsen went to sophomore wide receiver Dwayne Washington for a 20-yard score 90 seconds later. Following a fumble recovery by senior safety Ellis Hall on the ensuing kickoff, the Gladiators were looking to tighten the game. However, Nielsen was intercepted by Bailey Cowins at the four-yard line and the Bears ran out the final 4:12 of the half. When Nielsen went into the locker room, he had completed 15 of 26 passes for 206 yards while Callier had rushed for 187 yards on 26 carries. Then both went back to work immediately to begin the second half. On the first play of the third quarter, Nielsen connected with Johnson for a 60yard score. Two plays later, Callier busted loose for a 65-yard touchdown and with 72 seconds elapsed in the stanza, Warren was up 35-21. Callier would gain only 44 yards the rest of the game and ended with 297 yards on 44 carries. Meanwhile, Nielsen seemed to be slowing down slightly in the third quarter. Although his fourth touchdown pass, a five-yarder to Johnson late in the third quarter, brought Gahr to within a touchdown, he threw 25 passes and completed 16 of them for 158 yards going into the final 12 minutes. There, he would be one of three for 12 yards as Gahr ran six plays after senior Marco Torres booted a 37-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. Gahr’s six plays in the fourth quarter were made possible because David Del Toro sacked Nielsen twice on first downs for a total of 13 yards. “He really wasn’t on tonight,” Marshall said. “I thought his ball was kind of floating, so he was conservative holding it a little bit.” Gahr still had a chance to put together a late winning drive but when Callier was stopped for no game on first down with roughly five minutes left, a taunting penalty was called on Gahr and the Bears ran out the clock to the very end. Callier would also pick up three crucial yards from the Wildcat formation on fourth and two at the Gahr 20-yard line to preserve the victory. “I think there was a lot of taunting going on on the other side all game long and no one said anything,” Marshall said. “Then to wait at the end of the game to throw that flag without warning…we weren’t doing any of that. We made a big play and I’m not going to say any names but they were doing that to us all night and we do that, it’s a flag? Wow, bad timing!” Nielsen’s total of 376 yards puts him at 3,452 for the season and is 911 yards away from tying his older brother, Corey, for third place all-time in a single season. He is also averaging 383.5 yards a game, tops in the state. Johnson caught 10 passes for 159 yards while sophomore wide receiver Delshawn McClellan also hauled in 10 passes for 117 yards. Junior Caleb Davis led the defense with 10 tack-

les while junior linebacker Stevie Hoodye added eight more. Gahr will visit last place Paramount tonight and a victory would probably lock up second place for the Gladiators. Even with a win, Gahr needs Warren to beat Downey to avoid a coin flip which may leave the Gladiators out of the playoffs for a second straight season. “We didn’t talk about league title because I did that last year and we came out and laid an egg,” Marshall said. “This year I just said, let’s go play our football game, do the best we can and slow them down and score points. We didn’t score points early.”

Kelly’s Four Touchdowns Keeps John Glenn Alive For Playoffs By Loren Kopff John Glenn head coach Anthony Wilson and his Eagles football team had two weeks to reflect on a heartbreaking fourpoint loss to Artesia and prepare for Cerritos with playoff aspirations. The bye week came at the right time as the Eagles had lost their fourth straight contest, all coming in Suburban League action, the last two by a combined 11 points. But senior running back Brandon Kelly came through with one of his biggest games of the season as he rushed for 176 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns including the game-winner with 23 seconds left as the Eagles held off a pesky Cerritos squad 35-29 last Thursday night at Rants Stadium. It was Glenn’s first league win, fifth overall this season, and kept the team alive for the playoffs. The five victories are the most in over 10 seasons as tonight’s road game at Bellflower will decide fourth place and the final automatic playoff berth from the league assuming La Mirada beats Artesia. Heading into the last week of the season, Bellflower sits at 2-3 in the circuit with Artesia and Glenn a game behind. “We’re gunning for the playoffs and we know we have two games and we have to win those two games,” Wilson said. “Cerritos is a great team; they ran on us but our motivation is on going to the playoffs.” “We played a good game,” Kelly said. “We started off slow but we ended picking it up. The O-line came through for us today.” The way the game began, it looked as if it would be a high-scoring shootout. Cerritos senior running back Derek Jones rushed four times for 33 yards before junior running back Aaron Francis took the next five touches and added 16 yards including a one-yard score. Kelly would match that with 67 yards on three carries in 1:18 and scored his first touchdown with 5:37 left in the opening quarter. However, the Dons quickly regained the lead when Francis took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to the house, his second

TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 kickoff return of at least 98 yards this season. But with 3:52 left in the first quarter, Kelly scored from a yard out and when senior quarterback Jose Escobar tossed the two-point conversion pass to junior wide receiver Dejon Bernard, it was suddenly a 14-14 game. The 14 first quarter points tied a season-high for the Dons. The game would remain knotted until Kelly added a two-yard touchdown to his total with 25 seconds remaining in the first half. The score was made possible after a missed field goal ruined an 11-play drive by Cerritos that took 6:13 off the clock. Still, the Dons were hanging in the game as they too needed a win to stay alive for the playoffs and hope for a coin flip to decide their fate. They rushed for 108 yards in the first half and finished with 246. Jones was paving the way and finished the game with 145 yards on 20 carries while Francis would add another 76 on 16 touches. “I was there and they always had athletes,” Wilson said. “Speed is something you can’t teach and it’s hard to stop, especially Derek Jones. My hats go off to him. He ran hard and he’s the heart and soul of that team. It’s unfortunate for them because he’s a senior. He had a great senior year and is a great overall kid. “I expected Cerritos to sell out,” Wilson added. “They all know who I am and I expected it to be a close game. The bye week is kind of a killer, just like [Norwalk head coach Jesse] Ceniceros said. The momentum goes down.” Jones and Francis would put the Dons back in front early in the third quarter. After Jones recovered a fumble on the first play of the half, the two would combine for 58 yards on six carries, the last a oneyard run by Jones. Francis then added the two-point conversion and the hosts were leading 22-21. But, here came the Eagles and it was a nearly botched play that ended up a touchdown. Following a 21-yard reception from Escobar to sophomore wide receiver Vincent Watkins on third and 14, Escobar fumbled the next snap, recovered it and threw a seven-yard score to sophomore wide receiver Arthur Armstrong. Another two-point conversion made it a 29-22 game with 4:50 left in the stanza. “That was supposed to be a trap and thank god none of our linemen went down the field,” Wilson said. They came back to block and knew it was a fumble.” But, Cerritos wasn’t ready to pack it in yet as a 25-yard touchdown run from Francis three minutes later tied the game. Then late in the fourth quarter, the Dons were faced with a fourth and 10 situation from the Glenn 45-yard line. Instead of punting and pinning the Eagles deep in their territory, Cerritos went for it but fumbled for a nine-yard loss. That was more than enough for Kelly as he touched the ball on six straight plays covering 46 yards and scored the game winner. “We knew he was going to have a big game,” Wilson said. “Unfortunately two weeks ago it cost us when we threw the ball in the air. We got a couple of unfortunate interceptions. But we wanted to give Brandon the work load. We’ll ride him to the playoffs.” Escobar completed six of 10 passes for 124 yards while on defense, senior

defensive end Ivan Bermudez had seven and a half tackles while Bernard added seven tackles plus an interception. For the Dons, Francis had six tackles and senior linebacker Brenton Hill added five tackles. Their season concludes at 1-9 overall but the 170 points scored is the most since 2003 when the team put up 296 points. The 333 points allowed is over 100 fewer than last season.

CIF VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS

Gladiators Run Out Of Steam In First-Round Loss By Loren Kopff LANCASTER-As the Gahr girls volleyball team ventured up Highway 14 to the high desert for its California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section first-round playoff match this past Tuesday night, it didn’t know what to expect. Neither did Larry Vocke, the head coach of Quartz Hill. Since Gahr missed the playoffs last season, the first time for head coach Sonny Okamoto who has been around these parts for 24 seasons, his players were somewhat inexperienced. But such was the case for the Rebels, although they went to the playoffs in 2008. In any event, Gahr’s season came to an end when Quartz Hill took advantage of a sluggish performance in the fourth set and eliminated the visitors 2522, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18. The third place representatives from the San Gabriel Valley League, who needed to win one of its final two regular season matches to reach the playoffs, finish the season at 15-13. “When you’ve been around as long as I have, you’re going to find out there are going to be certain things that happen with each team,” Okamoto said. “Even within our league with Downey and Warren, we thought Downey was the much better team and they should have beat Warren [in the second round] and win the league outright. [Quartz Hill] defeated Lancaster in the same manner.” Quartz Hill had entered the match as the Division III-AA’s 10th ranked team and shared the Golden League championship with Lancaster. However, Vocke admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect since desert teams rarely play teams in the regular season from southern Los Angeles County or Orange County. “I expected a good game and we got it,” Vocke said. “I did find out later today that they were going to be a good defensive team and they’re going to keep coming at you. That’s exactly what they did. “It’s very difficult because no one out here ever plays them,” Vocke continued. “I would like to play in Sonny’s tournament next year but it’s far away. Four days for us is a lot of travel.” In the first set, both teams were getting a feel for each other as they combined for six ties and four lead changes by the time it was 8-8. A kill from Jessica Perez gave the Rebels a 19-12 lead before Gahr made

They were doing a good job keeping the ball in play.” Quartz Hill led throughout the early parts of the third set but with the score 12-9, junior middle blocker Erica Willig served two straight aces before Currie and Heyward combined on another block. Currie, McCray and libero Connie Reeves are the only seniors on the team, so experience should help Gahr get back to the playoffs in 2010. The one big concern will be at the setter position, which Currie has held the past three seasons.“The seniors reached their potential,” Okamoto said. “It was their turn; that’s what it came down to. Three years ago, two of them had to learn and then the third senior that came in…this is the year they had to do it because of my setter. This was their time.” On a positive note, the 15 victories are the most since 2002 when the Gladiators, a third place team that season, went to the semifinals. “As you prepare for championships, nothing should change,” Okamoto said. “You should do the same things over and over and over. The difficult part was, they already forgot in a year. The rebuildMorganalarm@gmail.com ing was tough for these girls and they didn’t understand everything that goes with [going to the playoffs].”

INDIA

Continued from page 1 room and I had intended to keep my distance. But my aunt told me to come and see so that I could truly understand what the procedure entailed. I saw the spreading of the vagina and the cervix. I saw the use of rods and tubes going into the cervix and again, though I was extremely uncomfortable at first, I got over my uneasiness and tried to understand that its all just part of the responsibilities of the profession. The hospital itself is small and organized. There’s rooms for the patients, as well as an operation theater, a room for labor and delivery, a room for sonograms, small examination rooms and doctors offices. There’s a downstairs pharmacy and a small room for minor emergency surgeries. It still hasn’t fully sunken in, all that I’ve seen today… August 27, 2009 I was a little nervous going into today because Saileshkaka’s told me that I would get to watch a C-section birth. However, it ended up being another really cool experience that I could finally see for real instead of on TV. I was able to watch up close as they placed the incision in the abdomen of the woman and proceeded to cut open her uterus. I saw the placenta when they removed the substance and got a little nervous when kaka dug his hand into the woman’s abdomen, apparently trying to get to the child. After a few minutes, I was able to see the head and the next moment, they had successfully been able to pull out a healthy, crying child. The C-Section was unique and exciting, just like the other procedures. I also got to see the post-operational treatment of a likely diabetic patient. A few days ago, he had a large deep chunk of skin removed from the back of his right shoulder. However, the cleaning and dressing of the wound ended up being surprisingly more difficult to watch than any of the previous surgeries I had ever seen. I guess that doctor’s get used to it as well as the nurses and I understand that the cleaning after the operation is just as important as the operation itself. Today at dinner, we had the chance to take about some of the major differences in healthcare between in India and back home. While insurance is vital in our nation, here in India it isn’t yet widespread and common. Doctors are mostly paid directly with cash or check. The nursing system here at the hospital is different as well. In America, nurses are trained and very specialized to specific tasks or area. Though here in India its possible to get a two or three year degree in nursing, Kaka’s nurses came to work in the hospital after graduating from 10th or 12th grade They are trained within the hospital to meet the unique demands and, instead of being job specific, are able to multitask in many areas, including serving tea. I went down to the hospital again after diner, and there was a lot of discussion about a patient with a poly and post-menstrual bleeding. Tomorrow the doctors are planning on discussing further and possibly operating so I’ll learn more about it later.

OPERA

Continued from page 1 coastline were chosen. Other than finding ways to pay for the production, Smith could only see the positives in giving her 4th to 6th grade students the experience of performing side to side with professionals. La Opera performances attempt to also teach students California history and about the lives of important persons who have attributed to the state’s development. While LA Opera provided the materials for the costumes, it was up to the children and their families to make them for the production. Nixon Elementary has enrolled 670 students for the current school year, and about 60 students are in Smith’s school choir that practices after school to prepare for musical events throughout the school year. In past years the choir has traveled to many

cities including San Francisco, San Diego, Houston and Nashville. Smith’s assistants include teachers Tina Van Werd, Nadja Ellis and 26 year veteran teacher Angela Roddy-Brown, who also has been at Nixon Elementary for all of her teaching career.

WHITNEY

Continued from page 1 Now she is eager to leave for Rafaela, Argentina, with a population of about 90,000, in June, 2010 where she will spend three weeks hoping to learn from and to share ideas with Laura Luduena, the Director of Escuela de Ensenanza Media Number 429. The school has 126 teachers and staff, and 1500 students attend morning and evening shifts. Luduena has already visited Whitney High with 1,025 students, as well as Artesia High, Gahr High, Tracy High, UCI and UCLA campuses during the three weeks of Oct. 17 to Nov. 5. Luduena was quite impressed with the classrooms at Whitney, her host school, and wished that her campus had Smart Boards in every classroom, “but I know that would be very expensive.” Unlike American schools, there is little cultural diversity in Argentina and many students at the school have little money. “Yet I know I will learn a lot,” said Hager, “because when it is all said and done, kids are kids everywhere.”

ARTESIA

Continued from page 3 box. The cost for the renovations was approximately $1.5 million, according to Garcia, with most of the funding coming from ABC School District allocations. “I love technology and it just fits with everything else we have done at Artesia,” Garcia said. “When I started at Artesia five years ago, the teachers had overheads that you couldn’t even see with the lights on. You had to turn the lights off. We have now upgraded every classroom; we have state of the art classrooms. It’s all about being a technology advanced school, one that is going to facilitate whatever we are doing for kids.” This isn’t the first time that Garcia has been a part of renovations, or other changes. As the school’s first assistant principal, he was involved in the opening of Cabrillo High School in Long Beach in 1999. Some of the next projects that Garcia would like to be involved in would be upgrading the lighting at the stadium and the installation of a synthetic field to replace the grass. Little by little, more high schools in Southern California have been making that transformation. But putting in such a field surface costs a lot of money and Garcia said he is actually looking for donors. “The maintenance is not as bad as people believe,” Garcia said. “We have a fast team all the time; we’re known for speed. It will just make us faster. But more than that, the water savings…environmentally, it makes so much sense to have a synthetic field. “With the changes at the school, we have also had a change in the attitudes of the students,” Garcia added. “We have higher academics because those go hand in hand. You have to give the students a nice facility, a good environment for them to be able to move ahead. You want to provide the best you can for your students. My job as a principal is to be an advocate for the students. That’s how I see my job.”

MATTHEWS

Continued from page 2 of the Norwalk Branch Office said jurors deliberated for two and a half days before returning the penalty phase verdict for Anthony Deondrea Cain. He will be formally sentenced on Jan. 15, 2010 in Department W of Norwalk Superior Court. Cain also was convicted of two counts of residential robbery and one count of residential burglary. Jurors ad-

ditionally found true the allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, scissors, as to all but one count. Judge Dewey Falcone ordered the jury to return on Nov. 2 to begin the penalty phase. Cain faces a maximum penalty of death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case was co-prosecuted by Ramadan and Deputy District Attorney June Chung. Ernestine and Lamar Matthews, both 75, were found slain in their Cerritos home on Feb. 11, 2004. The case has been followed by many local and national news outlets for the past couple of years. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Cain, a felon and relative by marriage, just days after the murders. Ernestine Matthews was a former teacher for the Compton Unified School District. Her husband Lamar was a retired probation officer. Both were long time members of the Cerritos community.

Cerritos Sheriff’s Station Weekly Crime Summary November 2-8, 2009 Twenty-five Part I felony investigations were initiated last week by Cerritos deputies. This is down from the twentyseven logged the week before. Residential burglaries decreased and robberies remained the same, while increases were noted in commercial and vehicle burglaries along with vehicle thefts. There were 307 calls for service handled by patrol deputies last week, down from 339 the previous week. The new 2009 weekly average in calls for service is now 326. There was one robbery reported on Thursday November 5 at 5:00 p.m. after a male suspect stole clothing items from a store in the Los Cerritos Center. When contacted by loss prevention personnel, the suspect fought and bit one victim but was eventually arrested. Residential burglaries dropped from one the week before to no cases last week. The 2009 weekly average in residential burglaries remains at 2.4. Consider that burglars commonly avoid homes with dogs or alarm systems. For a small monthly payment, an alarm system could protect your home. That is a very small price to pay for the peace of mind that you will enjoy. Many homeowners’ policies offer discounts for customers using such systems. Remember, if you display a sign indicating your home is protected, the would-be burglar will be inclined to locate another target. One commercial burglary was reported last week. A projector was taken from a high school where no signs of a forced entry were observed. The 2009 weekly average in commercial burglaries is now 1.4. Vehicle burglaries increased from five to eleven reported last week. Highvolume commercial parking lots were involved in all but one of the crimes. Eight vehicles were Honda products and were burglarized in or around the Los Cerritos Center on Tuesday evening November 3. There were no signs of forced entry in these crimes leading detectives to believe that an altered or “shaved” key was used by the suspect(s). Two of the remaining crimes last week targeted SUVs, and stereo items were taken in four incidents. CDs, duffle bags, sunglasses, MP3 players, cell phones and purses were also reported stolen. The 2009 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is at 7.6. All of the items reported stolen were taken from the passenger compartment of the vehicles. Vehicle burglars are not known to generally break into a vehicle just to check for contents, but act on observations of visible property. Don’t give them a chance to make you a victim. Secure all items in the trunk or take them with you. Vehicle thefts increased from seven to eight in this reporting period. High-

TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 volume commercial parking lots were involved in seven of these crimes. Five Hondas, a Toyota, a Saturn, and a GMC truck were taken. The 2009 weekly average in vehicle thefts remains at 4.6. Car thieves are not always as selective as you think and as we mentioned, are frequently just looking for transportation. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent regardless of what you drive.
