Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Announces New Slate of Officers for its Board of Directors Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (PIH) has announced a new slate of officers for its Board of Directors. Effective October 1, 2009, Drew Sones will serve as Chair Drew Sones of the Board of Directors. Serving with Mr. Sones will be Donald G. Alvarado as Vice Chair; Jane Dicus as Secretary; and Kenton Woods as Treasurer. The Board of Directors includes physicians and business and community leaders who meet each month to help guide the policies of PIH. Mr. Sones is the President/ Owner of Drew Sones Consulting, a company that provides expertise in all areas of solid waste management. From 1971 to 2002, Mr. Sones was the Assistant Director of Sanitation, Solid Resources Management for the City of Los Angeles. In this position, Mr. Sones oversaw a staff of more than 1,000 employees, an annual budget of $140 million, 720,000 weekly residential customers, and landfill operations and construction and citywide recycling for both public and private sector generators. Mr. Sones has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and is a graduate of the Management of Health Care Institutions Program at California State University, Long Beach; the Public Sector Labor-Management Rela-

tions Program at the University of California, Los Angeles; and the Executive Management Program at the University of California, Los Angeles Anderson School of Management. Mr. Sones is a past Board member of the Southern California Solid Waste Management Association and the Municipal Waste Management Association, United States Conference of Mayors, and the Southern California Waste Management Forum. His civic involvement includes being a member of the Whittier Host Lions Club; acting as current Troop Committee Chair, Boy Scout Troop 841 of Whittier; serving as a member of the Uptown Whittier Association; and participating as a mentor for the California High School Culinary Academy. Mr. Sones has been a resident of Whittier for 34 years, and he and his wife, Susan, have two children. His hobbies include traveling, golfing, and hiking. Pico Rivera Receives $122 Million for Public Improvements By City Manager Chuck Fuentes Say it again! One Hundred and Twenty Two Million Dollars have already been secured and/or spent in federal, state and local funding for the most ambitious program of public improvements anywhere in the region. Two weeks ago, our Vital City Services Bond Underwriters, E.J. De La Rosa & Company, secured $29.5 million in bond proceeds— which are now on deposit in our City bank account—from Wall Street investors. Thanks to the efforts of our Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, along with Caltrans and the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, another $42.7 million in funding has been obtained to fully cover the cost of the Passons Boulevard Grade Separation project As part of our public outreach and education efforts, we present the the Parks Master Plan concepts for the complete renovation of parks facilities. We invite you to review them and send us your comments online at www.pico-rivera. org. Dramatic improvements were made to our neighborhood streets. All these newly repaved streets using the rubberized-asphalt-mix are guaranteed to last for 15 to 20 years. We have also received federal stimulus funds to completely repave Beverly Boulevard ($2.5 million), a project in which the

City will also fund the installation of decorative medians that will enhance the appearance and safety of this major thoroughfare. Also on tap are the complete repaving of Rosemead Boulevard from the city border at Telegraph Road northbound to Rex Road ($750,000) and the upgrade of Telegraph Road with safety medians and new signals for better traffic flow. Our Number 1 Priority of enhanced Law Enforcement services ($3.5 million) has resulted in major crime reduction. We also appreciate Supervisor Gloria Molina for funding the special Vandalism Enforcement Team (VET) program that has contributed to the nearelimination of unsightly graffiti throughout the city. Speaking of partnerships, we also are thankful for the Central Basin Municipal Water District for their comprehensive plans to install recycled-purified water pipelines on three major arterial streets beginning with Mines Avenue ($3.5 million). This ambitious project is part of a major pipeline project funded by the Southern California Water Replenishment District (WRD) and the County Flood Control District. The other two lines include Beverly Boulevard ($8 million), and the Sports ArenaBicentennial Park Complex ($2.1 million). Our on-going Graffiti Abatement program, composed of two See CITY Page 6

to burglars. Especially during the holiday season, he stated that putting purchases in the trunk of your car is the safest way to go while shopping. Rothans also warned owners of large SUVs that stealing third row seats has become popular with burglars as they are unmarked and cannot be indentified. Capt. Rothans also gave a few tips for homeowners to help them avoid becoming statistics. For example, since most burglaries are committed during the daytime hours when most people are at work, Rothans advised leaving a radio on to create the impression that someone may be home. Burglars, he noted, don’t like to take chances when they think someone may be home. Mayor Bob Archuleta also spoke at the luncheon. He told Chamber members that since the elections are over, “Now is the time to reunite and let’s go forward.” The mayor suggested that everyone reach out to family and friends to help continue the Chamber’s new member push. Over 35 new members have joined the Chamber in the past few months.

Combined with our $3.5 million increase in our Sheriff’s contract during this period, which allowed for specialized enforcement units, these results have more than justified our City Council’s decision to approve the administration’s directions. Celebrate the Holidays at City Hall Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony December 6 The City of Pico Rivera’s Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony returns to City Hall, 6615 Passons Blvd., on Sunday, December 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The area around City Hall will be transformed into a family-friendly Winter Wonderland complete with live entertainment, merry-go-round and kiddies’ ride, cookies and refreshments, tree lighting ceremony and the chance to visit with the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. All activities are free of charge. Staff from the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station will be selling a variety of food items, including barbecued tri-tip and chicken. Kids will have the chance to create their own holiday crafts at the Elves’ Workshop. Projects include holiday ornament and cookie decorating, a Santa and Reindeer bag and a coloring station. Headlining the entertainment that evening will be the ever-popular El Rancho High School Choraleers and The Town & Lamplight Carolers, an a capella Christmas carol group. Santa will arrive on his sleigh at five o’clock, just in time for the official lighting of the tree. Afterwards, Mr. Claus will be available to take photos with the entire family.
