HIGH SCHOOL:
SUMMER TRIPS
24 area high school students traveled to the south for an educational adventure June 4-6, 2019. Students began with a visit to the University of Texas-Dallas where they toured the campus and learned about their top-ranked programs in business, engineering, science, audiology and arts & technology from their eight schools and more than 140 academic programs. Students experienced the combination of math, strategy and luck at a Texas Rangers baseball game, they paid tribute to the life and legacy of John F. Kennedy visiting Dealey Plaza, a fun tour of AT&T Stadium-home of the Dallas Cowboys followed by a cultural experience at Medieval Times. Lastly, we traveled to the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Close to celebrating it’s 130th year, OU has a long standing legacy of history and excellence given through its three campuses in Oklahoma as well as centers in six locations internationally. Lastly, students had an experience of a life time—to step foot in the National Weather Center and the Advanced Radar Research Center located on OU’s campus.
MIDDLE SCHOOL:
25 area middle school students had the opportunity to travel to Stillwater and Tulsa, Oklahoma July 11-12, 2019. Students began their adventure on the beautiful campus of Oklahoma State University. They enjoyed a meal on campus and toured this strong academic school, highlighting eight colleges and over 320 majors. Students learned about their own aerodynamics at Sky Zone, followed by using fine motor skills at the local Dave and Buster’s in Tulsa. This summer’s Career Spotlight took place at Oklahoma’s Own News On 6 TV Station, where students toured the facilities and dreamt about a job in HR, Communications, Meteorology, Sound Engineering and Marketing. Some students even practiced their on screen talent! Lastly, students explored Tulsa Air & Space/Planetarium learning about Oklahoma’s aerospace history and science-based learning through discovery while dreaming of careers in the STEM field.

MENTORING
COLLEGE TRIPS
BY: PAT DUNCAN
BY: MICHELLE DAYTON
The U.S. Department of Education added a mentoring component to our current grant, beginning in August 2019. We were excited to welcome this addition to our program.
One of the best ways to see if a college is right for a student is for them to visit a campus. Visiting different colleges helps students better understand which college is right for them, and also allows them to hear about the admissions process, financial aid and scholarships, majors offered, housing, and average cost to attend. This is one of the many opportunities Talent Search offers our high school participants during the school year.
Mentors this year consisted of a former TRIO student in medical school at MSSU, a student ambassador at LCC, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and a student from PSU. Each of these mentors uniquely explained how they achieved success in high school and college. Topics ranged from taking high school seriously, applying oneself, and college study skills. It was also discussed how college can be challenging, and ways to manage stress. Students left their mentoring sessions feeling empowered; knowing there are many resources at college to help in a variety of ways. Dedication, hard work and involvement make college more enjoyable and successful. Each mentor took questions at the end of their session to answer any specific question any of the students had. Make sure you attend next year when we bring mentors to your school!

This year we visited both MSSU and WSU. While at MSSU, students were given an admissions presentation that also included information about Project Stay. PS is a TRIO program that offers resources for students as they complete their bachelor’s degree. After a campus tour students heard from former Talent Search student (OHS 2017) and current MSSU student Elijah Elliott. Elijah represented the YOURS TO LOSE program which is an advanced medical school acceptance program. At WSU, high school juniors participated in Black & Yellow Day. This all-day event gave students the opportunity to participate in sessions hosted by each academic college, tour campus, and explore
all the opportunities available at WSU.
LCC BOOK SCHOLARSHIP Each Spring, six graduating seniors are awarded the Labette Community College TRIO Talent Search Book Scholarship. Each scholarship is worth $250 to help offset the cost of books their first semester of college.
