Editor’s Note
May/June 2015 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, The year is swiftly moving on and I am writing this whilst enjoying the sunshine in the garden accompanied by the sounds of birds chirping, lawnmowers rumbling and little Milo cat purring on my lap. It feels like a Summer morning although we’re still in Spring. It’s been another busy couple of months and there is still plenty to keep you occupied over the following months - just take a look at the calendar on page 14 for some inspiration. Don’t forget there will be road closures in place for the Summer Fun Day on 30th May.
I would like to say a big thank you to the Crowborough Chamber of Commerce for the excellent job in organising the Business Expo at the beginning of March. I had great fun throughout the day meeting readers and local business people. I was particularly touched when my first visitor, Joan Brookbank arrived half an hour before the show opened just to thank me for publicising her group, the Sussex High Weald Dementia Social Group, in the Directory. It’s a pleasure Joan :-) You may have noticed the announcement of my new venture on page 2, The Community Show, a radio show being launched on 30th April at 10am. The show will run for an hour each week and cover all things community, charity and fundraising that are happening in Kent and the county borders, so of course this covers Crowborough. It will mainly be chat and there will be one studio guest each week giving us an insight into their organisation and what they have planned. I’m very excited about this new project and hope you can listen in at www.channelradio.co.uk. As usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to secure it’s future. Until next time... Forward to the Past or is it Back to the Future? At 10 o’clock on Tuesday 24th March 2015 a special burial ceremony began on Rotherfield’s Millennium Green. It was a ceremony that will be repeated 50 years hence but this time in reverse, when on the 24th March 2065 a Time Capsule will be unearthed. Key Stage 2 pupils from Rotherfield Primary School were gathered around a deep, newly dug hole to watch as Chairman of the Green’s Trustees, Michael White, oversaw the burying of the capsule. The event was the final outcome of a project coordinated by Lifewisdom, a local charity entitled “Meadows of the Weald”. With the help of local residents, Kipling Class at the primary school and the Trustees of the Green had together studied the history of the local fields and their place in village life. It was the idea of the children to bury a Time Capsule and it was they, who enthusiastically filled it with bits and pieces that had personal meaning for themselves.

Crowborough and Horwich commemorate 25 years of twinning Crowborough and Horwich made history is 1990 by becoming the first towns in the country to twin. At a signing ceremony in Crowborough on the 10th March, Cllr Ron Reed, Town Mayor of Crowborough and Cllr Richard Silvester, Town Mayor of Horwich pledged to continue the special relationship by signing a 25th anniversary charter. Cllr Silvester was also presented with a painting of the town by local artist David Peacock. Cllr Reed visited Horwich in January where he met with representatives from the town’s community and voluntary groups. Both Mayors are keen to establish a stronger link between the towns and there are plans to commemorate the anniversary by having inter-town sports matches this year.

School Children visit the Town Hall
The Mayor’s Charities 2014 – 2015
Pupils from St John’s Primary School had a taste of democracy at work when they visited the Town Hall in March. As well as learning about how the council works, The Town Mayor, Cllr. Ron Reed, chaired a meeting where the children debated the practicalities of holding lessons outside.
Every year the newly elected Mayor will decide which charities will be beneficiaries of the Mayor’s fund for his or her civic year. The Crowborough 1st Responders and Sussex High Weald Dementia Social Group were chosen by the current Mayor, Cllr. Ron Reed, and both charities received a cheque at the Town Conference in March.
Town Clerk, Philippa Hewes, said “It was great to welcome the children to the Town Hall and to be given the opportunity to give them an insight into how decisions are made, particularly in view of the forthcoming elections in May”.
Sussex High Weald Dementia Social Group About thirteen years ago a Crowborough resident decided to hold regular coffee mornings to talk about the issues surrounding the care of loved ones with dementia. Carers of people who suffer with dementia often feel isolated and lonely, and the meetings helped those who had to cope with the demands of the illness. This was the beginnings of Sussex High Weald Dementia Social Group, and in 2012 a formal constitution was drawn up stating the aims of the group, which was to provide social activities for dementia sufferers in North Weald area, and their carers. The social group, which is run by volunteers, meets once a month providing tea and cakes and a friendly chat to discuss various matters. Outings for the group are also organised on a regular basis and are free of charge. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from 2pm-4.30pm at Heather View Care Home, Beacon Road, Crowborough, TN6 1AS. Crowborough Lions host a free diabetic screening session at the Town Hall In 1974 twenty or so Crowborough residents, driven by a desire to put something back into the community and have fun in the process, formed Crowborough & District Lions Club. Having first established a charitable trust, the club’s Community Service committee then began to research, make contact and respond to a wide range of requests for assistance from local good causes. The assistance can be either for financial support or for resource in terms of members’ time and effort. The club’s Community Service programme includes supporting the needs and aspirations of young people e.g. Scouting & Guiding groups, sponsorship of Crowborough & District junior football league, schools and sports associations, assisting disadvantaged members of the community, and ensuring the inclusiveness of senior citizens through its annual summer tea party and Christmas luncheon. Most recently the Club hosted a free diabetic screening session which the Town Council was pleased to host in the Town Hall. 90 people were tested with 2 being highlighted for further investigation. Another session is planned for later on in the year. The club also supports specific causes in particular the fete run by The Friends of Crowborough Hospital, the collection at the town’s fireworks display in aid of The Town Mayor’s Charities, the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance and
the town’s Christmas festivities. In order to provide the finance for this ambitious programme the club’s Fund Raising committee runs an imaginative range of activities in which it connects with the local community through an Easter egg raffle, darts marathon, big quiz, local fairs and fetes, Christmas carols float, and not forgetting the everpresent bookstalls in the town centre and at the station. All these activities are run by members and friends of the club who volunteer according to the time they have available and, with zero administration costs, the club is proud to say every penny of the funds raised goes directly to a chosen charitable cause. The club is fortunate to enjoy wonderful support from the public but above all it is the generosity of spirit from the local community which members find so rewarding. The club has received recognition for its work and was proud to receive a Civic Award from Crowborough Town Council for service to the local community. Additionally the club’s Community Liaison Officer Terry Mason, who is currently Lions District Governor for the south-east region, received an award from Lions International President for service to the local community. Of course, all work and no play would make the members’ life very dull indeed and therefore the club also has an active social programme. Its annual anniversary dinner, numerous other dining occasions, a hugely popular fish

and chips quiz night, country walks with an evening meal and other enjoyable outdoor activities are all great opportunities to have fun and develop friendships. Become a friend of the club, come along to one of its monthly meetings and find out more about us. We are always seeking new members as they are the reason for the club’s longevity and vitality. A wide range of activities are available for aspiring members to express themselves whether in fundraising or community service. It meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 8:00pm in the clubhouse of Crowborough Athletic Football Club,
Alderbrook Close, Crowborough TN6 3DJ. Do come along and meet us, you will be warmly welcomed by everyone. Take a peek at our Facebook page, explore our website at www.crowlions. org.uk, or contact the membership secretary David Martin on Tel: 01892 652300 or e-mail: loxfield@googlemail. com The vision of those twenty or so founder members is even more relevant today and their successors continue with this valuable work, supporting the local community of Crowborough and the surrounding area. As a Lion, you will make life better for others while enriching your own life in the process.

Latest news This year’s Summer Fun Day will take place on Saturday 30th May in Crowborough Town Centre
The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce Fun Day is one of the most eagerly anticipated days of the Crowborough calendar and every year seems to attract more and more people to the town with over 7,000 visiting last year. The Chamber is delighted that pitches for this year’s Fun Day are going fast with local businesses, organisations and charities present, along with the French street market, magician, Punch & Judy, professional face painters, bouncy castle, live music and a Coconut Tree Climbing Wall; all these can be enjoyed by the public free of charge. Visitors to Crowborough Town Centre will also have the opportunity to find out more about the local businesses, charities and organisations that have taken stalls at the event as well as visiting the retailers in the town. Once again this year we are delighted to welcome the ever popular French Market whose stalls will be selling a variety of continental food, drink and other wares. This day would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Thank you to our main sponsors; Freedom Leisure, Newman Business Solutions, Lawson Commercial, Prosperity IFA and T&T Plant Hire and to our feature sponsors; Focus All Media and Zest. This year we will be collecting for our chosen charity Clued-Up. Please give generously to support this important local charity who provide support, information and advice for young people. Any donation large or small will be gratefully received, collection buckets will be available in various locations on the day. Please see the Fun Day page of our website for more information www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk
**Monthly Business Breakfast Networking Meetings** Held on the first Tuesday of each month at The Millbrook Garden Centre Coffee Shop from 7.45-8.45am. Email secretary@crowboroughchamber.co.uk to request an invitation. This event is FREE.
