Editor’s Note
July/August 2015 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, I can’t believe we are midway through the year already, the summer
solstice has been and gone, and the next season we’ll be welcoming in will be autumn! As I’m writing this I’m still waiting for the heat wave to arrive which they keep promising on the news.
There may not have been a heat wave for the Crowborough Fun Day but the sun certainly shone down on the town centre.
I always enjoy seeing the town full of people at
these events. The supported charity for the day was Cluedup.info, a valuable information service and drop-in centre for young people in Crowborough.
You may remember my announcement in the last issue
about my new radio show which launched at the end of April.
I’ve now
produced 6 shows and the show is going from strength to strength. It’s about
all things community, charity and fund-raising taking place in Kent and on the county borders. I’ve been promoting Crowborough rather a lot on the shows and have guests from the area lined up to appear on future shows.
It’s an
internet radio station so you can only listen to it online at www.channelradio. co.uk (Thursdays 10-11am) and all the past shows are available to listen to
on the website www.thecommunityshow.net Along with my husband Russell (The Barrister Broker) as co-presenter, we are having a great time working on the show together.
We have a fantastic Fairtrade hamper on offer to the winner of the prize crossword courtesy of Crowborough Fairtrade. Turn to page 42 to enter.
I hope you enjoy this issue and please, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. October issue is 31 July! st

Welcome to Emma Davies Gardens. I can design and build your garden. Based in Crowborough, East Sussex, I offer a full garden design service, starting from producing a drawing through to build and final planting. I will take you through the process simply so you know what to expect... • Meet and greet - at your property.
• Consultation – I will ask questions to understand your requirements/obtain your brief.
• Survey – A professional land surveyor confirms accurate measurements of the garden profile.
• The Design – I will produce a scaled, hand drawn design on A1, accompanied by colour pictures to fully illustrate your new garden. • Working Drawings - The design is then transferred to CAD for contractor quoting/construction.
• The Build – Having chosen a landscaper, contracts are drawn up to protect and highlight the roles of all parties. • Final flourish – The planting.
Emma Davies trained at Plumpton Agricultural College, she studied for the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture and took a Diploma in Garden Design. Crowborough & District Lions update ‘Blue skies, smiling at me…’ “The lyrics of Irving Berlin could not be more appropriate for Crowborough Lions’ most recent events. Whether setting a popcorn and candyfloss sales record at East Grinstead Town Fair or enjoying the annual foray into Ashdown Forest, the sun shone down benevolently on the club’s fundraising and social activities. The club is now preparing to welcome one hundred of the district’s senior citizens to its summer tea party in June, at which guests will enjoy the club’s renowned afternoon tea with musical entertainment in which there will be opportunities for everyone to join in. In the following month members celebrate the start of the new club year with their own ‘Handover Dinner’ at Barnsgate Manor Vineyard. ‘…nothing but blue skies from now on’ is how the song ends, and that’s exactly what the club hopes to achieve for all the good causes it is privileged to serve. If you know an individual or an organisation that could benefit from Lions’ financial support, submit an application to: treasurer@crowlions.org.uk”

The Club takes part in various local activities. Apart from the fellowship events within the club, the club has provided days out for the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children, an annual Kid’s Day Out for underprivileged children, a Senior Citizen’s Party, and sponsorship for the Beacon Academy’s Art Show and Young Musician of the Year Competitions, in addition to the Rotary District’s Young Chef and Young Musician’s competitions. The Club may also be seen taking part in the Crowborough and Rotherfield Carnival processions. At international level, Rotary has been responsible for organising the Polio Plus programme, to rid the world of the scourge of polio. Now reaching its final stages, success is just a small step away. There are only three small pockets left, in countries where conflict zones are preventing access.

Latest news Another successful day for Crowborough Saturday 30th May saw the eighth annual Summer Fun Day take place in Crowborough Town Centre. Over 40 local businesses, charities and other organisations took the opportunity to promote themselves by taking a spot at one of the stalls alongside the 15 very popular French Market traders.
The streets, which were closed to traffic for the day, were once again rammed with people taking advantage of the chance to browse the wares and enjoy the free entertainment. There were excellent performances on the bandstand from local young talent including James Jenkins, Milly McCarron, Paige Hackworth as well as the impressive inChoir and Any Other Business. Children were kept entertained by the Coconut Climbing Tree, Punch and Judy, Magician and Bouncy Castle. All these were free for the public to use, with donations requested for Clued-Up, the local information and counselling service for young people. A presentation will be made at this year’s Annual Chamber Review in September. The day could not happen without the support of our Main Sponsors; Freedom Leisure, Lawson Commercial, Newmans, Prosperity IFA and T&T DIY as well as our Feature Sponsors, Focus All Media and Zest. Chamber President Jeremy Woolger says “Although a very challenging day to organise, it is very rewarding to see the smiles of all the local people and the stallholders obviously enjoying the day”.

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs I attended a n o t h e r successful Crowborough Fun Day this year. Not only did most of Crowborough seem to be present but the sun was shining and everyone was having fun. Congratulations to Crowborough Chamber of Commerce and everyone else involved in the organisation – you did the town proud.
I have been especially busy over the last couple of months now wearing two hats; one working with Laura (publisher of this magazine) as co-presenter of The Community Show which she presents on Channel Radio. For those readers who haven’t picked up on this yet, we present a live radio show every Thursday between 1011am covering all things community, charity and fundraising across Kent and the county borders and we give mentions and promotions to community events, etc. This is internet radio and you can tune in to our show at www. channelradio.co.uk.
are their legal expertise and lower cost. With much lower overheads than solicitors and different ways of working, barristers make a very cost-effective and value for money legal solution indeed, as my many client testimonials on my website show. Take a look at www. thebarristerbroker.com. Whilst the vast majority of my work relates to “who gets what” following divorce or a non-married relationship breakdown (i.e. the distribution of the family assets - house, car, money, etc.) and child arrangements (contact and residence of the children) my latest success involved the driving offence of speeding. A gentleman contacted me in urgent need of legal advice and representation at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court. He was charged with driving at 103 mph on the M25 (Clacket Lane). It was not his intention to dispute the charge but he obviously wanted to avoid a driving ban as speeds over 100mph are in line for a ban.
I arranged for my client to have a meeting with a senior barrister specialising in road traffic law a couple of days after our initial phone call, who then represented him in court a few days after. Thanks to the barrister’s expert knowledge and skilful mitigation, the result was that the client avoided a ban altogether. Mission accomplished. As one might imagine, the client was relieved beyond belief and extremely grateful that I had arranged matters not only so My second hat of course is as The Barrister quickly but had given him a barrister who, in the Broker, helping people avoid the cost of client’s own words “knew exactly what he was solicitors by providing them with an alternative doing”! way to deal with their legal issues quickly and For a local, compassionate and professional cost-effectively.
