Travel Feature

November/December 2015  The Crowborough Directory

Summer has been a really busy time for travellers and I believe that a lot of this is due to our British Pounds going a lot further when travelling round Europe. The Euro is at a historically low point and travel here is less expensive now than it has been for a long time.

One Euro in summer 2014 exchanged at around 80 pence sterling. This summer it has come down to around 70 pence per Euro, over 12% less so even more for our money. As a result holidays to Europe remain popular with three of the top destinations during the summer period being Spain, Italy and Greece. Late summer sales were up by 22% and the exchange rate is encouraging more people to take advantage of the extra value. This includes the holiday expenses that usually increase the overall cost such as eating out, tours and souvenirs, which are now substantially cheaper. Train tickets, internal flights and even some flights from the UK have become less expensive too. As well as being able to make their money go further, my customers really appreciate the added value I provide as their own personal travel advisor. It’s so important that I get to know them so I can tailor-make their holiday down to the finest detail, wherever in the world they want to go. Plus running my business from home means I am available whenever they need me. Many have told me you can’t put a price on that and they are certainly happy that their money is going further when booking their European getaway too! For more information or to discuss your forthcoming travel plans, contact me, Cornel, on 01892 882 750 or cornel@travelcounsellors.com www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/cornel.schalkwyk

It’s all handmade at Magnolias at home fitting and hanging of your window dressing and this will all be detailed in your quote. Now that your windows look great, you might want to have chair covers or cushions to match, something which of course Di can make for you as she is a whizz on the sewing machine and can create just about anything.

Finding the perfect curtains or blinds for your home is not an easy task when you’re in a shop, away from the room in question, and hoping the bright store lights aren’t making fabrics look a different colour to what they will look like hanging in your window. Will they go with what you already have in your room and will they be the right size? To make sure you make the right choices with the right materials and colours, you could always get in an expert and Di from Magnolias at home is an extremely talented curtain and blind maker so you’ll end up with nothing but perfectly fitted curtains and blinds (and maybe even accessories to match). Di will visit you in your home, bringing with her a vast selection of fabric swatches and be able to help you choose the most suitable style of curtain or blind for your window. The most difficult part of the process will probably be choosing the actual fabric. Of course one of the big advantages of having your furnishings handmade is that you can really coordinate your home’s interior. It’s not just the huge selection of fabrics Di has access to but you can also select the most complimentary curtain poles or tracks for your window space at the same time. Part of the service also covers the

Perhaps you have a favourite arm chair or other piece of furniture that has been worn to a thread over the years. Bring life back to it by having it re-upholstered. Just take a look at these chairs Di has worked on - I’m sure you’ll agree that they look fabulous.

Whether you’re after a new set of curtains for the lounge, chair covers for your dining room or a new blind for your bathroom, Di is able to make something completed fitted to your exact requirements. She can also work with fabric you provide if it is suitable for purpose.

I Care for Crowborough Crowborough Town Council’s “I Care for Crowborough” week was launched on the 21st September at Bluebell Wood with an army of volunteers ready to clean up Crowborough. Children from Ashdown Primary School, Town and District councillors, volunteers from Crowborough’s Waitrose store and Crowborough residents were among those who gave up their free time to help litter pick in the town. The Town Council organised a week of activities from litter picking, surveying blocked paths and dirty road signs to holding recycling information exhibitions. The week culminated in Wealden MP Nus Ghani joining the Southon Scout group who organised their own litter pick around Whitehill Road. Cllr Sandra Timms who initiated the idea said “A big thank you to everybody that took part. I am really pleased with the number of people that have demonstrated an interest.”

Your new Councillors Cllr Maggie Brain - West Ward I have lived in Crowborough since 1975 when my husband and I moved here and bought our first house. We then went on to have our three children so I have had a lot of first-hand experience of Crowborough’s maternity unit! I was pleased to help when the unit was under threat whilst I was pregnant with my third child and have always supported them in their campaigns since. Our children have all been to St Mary’s primary school here and then went on to St Gregory’s in Tunbridge Wells. I have seen Crowborough change through four decades but it has still retained its friendliness and sense of community. As I am a northerner by birth I thought it a great compliment when one of the health visitors referred to Crowborough as ‘the only northern town in the south of England.’ I am now retired with more time to give and I currently sit as a magistrate in Brighton. In the last few years I have seen Crowborough ‘abandoned’ by the local services. Wealden District Council has gone. The ambulance service has gone. The police presence has been reduced and our staff at the hospital are moved to keep other services running. On a positive note the building of the community centre has given a much needed boost to the town. I’m passionate about our beautiful countryside and wildlife. In Crowborough we are lucky to have an enthusiastic ranger in our country park who wants to engage with our schools and encourage our children to look at what goes on in the world around them. I’m ready to join the next pond-dipping session!

Cllr Greg Rose - East Ward I fell in love with Crowborough whilst house hunting across the Wealden area with my partner John. We eventually moved here from London in 2011 and quickly made East Ward our home alongside John’s elderly mother who also lives with us. As I work full time away from the town I really wanted to become more involved with the local community, and with a keen interest in politics I soon wanted to become a councillor. I am very proud to be elected District and Town councillor for Crowborough East. It’s an honour to represent the area in which I live. I am whole heartedly throwing myself into the role, dealing with issues as varied as pot holes, dog fouling and disabled parking bays. I also make a point of attending as many events as possible so that people know who their councillor is. As part of the Crowborough Conservative Branch I am delighted to have helped raise funds for Alderbrook Community Association, Jarvis Brook Community Centre and the High Weald Dementia Social Group; all of which do amazing work in our local community. I never knew who my councillors were or what they did before I took the decision to stand and that’s why I intend to remain visible, open and contactable to all those who may need me. Jarvis Brook Community Centre Project NEEDS YOU! The Jarvis Brook Community Centre Project was established in early 2014 after a neighbourhood consultation identified a need to turn the disused block on the Jarvis Brook recreation ground into a Community Centre. It will provide an accessible venue for local groups, businesses and residents to use and to give much needed facilities to the existing users of the park. The Community Centre will have a range of uses; a meetings room, functions room, kitchen, café/kiosk for the summer months, with accessible toilet and baby change facilities for those that frequent the play park, multi‐use games area and skate bowl that already exist on the site. The project is a registered charity – a Charitable Incorporated Organisation - and the group, comprising of local residents and councillors, with representation and support from Wealden District Council, meet regularly to discuss the various aspects and priorities of the project. To date, over £12,000 has been raised and £47,000 has been secured until the end of the financial year with a view to securing the remaining funds through large grant applications.

Currently, there is a significant gap in the number of volunteers and skills mix that are needed to see this project succeed, and an urgent appeal is being made for help. There are a range of things on the agenda – business planning, finance, grant applications, fundraising, social media and marketing and sharing ideas. There is no long-term commitment or expectation to take anything on, but you may have a trade or skill or simply want to get involved and help shape the future of such a deserving and worthwhile project for Jarvis Brook. If you would like to know more or get involved, please email jbcommunitycentre@gmail.com or phone 01892 664 197.

Crowborough Lion’s Latest News! “The festivity of the carnival came hard on the heels of another very successful CrowboroughHospital Fête on August bank holiday Monday when our ‘Tins and Bottles’ stalls raised over £800 for the Friends of the Hospital and a big thank you is owed to all those who supported us on the day. Hoping to build on the success of our inaugural diabetic screening event last year when over eighty members of the public took advantage of the drop-in service, this year’s attendance in September exceeded expectations and five GP referrals were identified by the MEDIX team. We will now be providing this valuable service on a regular annual basis. We are committed to serving the local community and most recently we financed the training of volunteers to provide support for families in and around Crowborough. Perhaps you know an individual or an organisation that could benefit from Lions’ financial support, if so, please contact our treasurer at: treasurer@crowlions.org.uk.”

The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce were delighted to present local charity Clued Up with a £1,000 donation from money raised at this year’s Fun Day. Clued-up.info, based in The Broadway, is an information shop for young people aged between 11 and 25 years. They provide advice and information on any subject including education, training and employment, family problems, health, housing and welfare, mental health, bullying, alcohol and drug awareness, as well as counselling and liaising with other agencies on young people’s behalf. Lorna Watson and Dick Partridge from Clued Up were delighted to receive the donation from Chamber President Jeremy Woolger at the September Chamber Meeting (pictured). The Chamber continues to look at ways of supporting local businesses, sharing news and information at Chamber Meetings, holding networking events and offering promotional opportunities. The Chamber is therefore delighted to announce that it will once again be hosting the Crowborough Business Expo at the Community Centre on 1st March 2016. Last year’s inaugural Expo was very popular with exhibitors, many of whom reported gaining new business directly from the day. Exhibitor stands at the Expo are available for both members and non members and the event, which is Free to attend, will be promoted both within and outside of the Crowborough area. The Chamber will also be promoting its members with this year’s Chamber Directory. This A5 booklet will be printed in December and distributed to 8,500 local households and businesses early in the New Year. All paid up Chamber members will benefit from having a free entry comprising their company name and contact details as well as having the opportunity to purchase extra advertising. If your business is not yet a member of the Chamber you need to join up by the end of November to ensure your spot in the directory. Visit www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk for more details.

**Monthly Business Breakfast Networking Meetings** Held on the first Tuesday of each month at The Millbrook Garden Centre Coffee Shop from 7.458.45am. The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs We’re now in October and Christmas isn’t too far away – my how this year has flown by!

I regularly receive enquiries from people who either have or have had a solicitor acting for them but who have become disillusioned with the legal process because of a lack of progress, increasing legal costs or no end in sight. By this point they are becoming emotionally exhausted, frustrated with the legal profession and feeling at a loss as to how they can regain control of their situation and make the most of any additional legal spend. This is precisely where I can help so if this sounds like you or someone you know, make a note of my number at the bottom of this page and give me a call! If you are contemplating using a legal advisor, beware of “free” consultation offers. “Legal expertise” does not come free nor is it cheap so don’t be hoodwinked into thinking you are going to get expert legal advice for nothing or on the cheap! Many legal advisors still charge for their time by hourly rate (often after the “free” meeting!). The obvious flaw with hourly rate billing is that the inexperienced and inefficient cost more because they undoubtedly take longer than the person who is experienced and works efficiently! “Fixed Fee” services are slowly becoming more available throughout the legal profession although I would say this is

40

Please call 01732 864 878 to feature your business

predominantly down to consumer demand rather than anything else. If you are offered a fixed fee service you need to know exactly what you are getting for your fixed fee. Don’t be shy about asking questions of the legal advisor you are dealing with. For example, is the legal advisor a qualified solicitor or legal executive? Will the legal advisor do the work him or herself or will it be done by a trainee? If your matter is likely to be contested, i.e. following the breakdown of a marriage/relationship you and your spouse/ ex-partner can’t agree how the assets of the marriage/relationship will be split (who gets what), ask the legal advisor what experience they have in dealing with these types of disputes? If your case is likely to go to court, will this person represent you in court? If not, why not? If they will, ask them what trial experience they have as an advocate? You need to know who you are dealing with before you commit to putting your case and investing your money in this person’s hands. Do not assume that just because a person is a qualified lawyer that makes them right for your case. Do your due diligence and ask the right questions! I help people avoid the cost of solicitors by providing them with an alternative way to deal with their legal issues as quickly and cost-effectively as possible; by facilitating the direct services of Barristers - the legal experts. I am based in Edenbridge and can be contacted on 01732 866 562.
