Editor’s Note
September/October 2014 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, It was around this time of year 8 years ago that I made a plan to launch this magazine, following in the footsteps of sister publication The Edenbridge Directory. I can’t believe this is now issue 57 and I’m still having so much fun being a magazine publisher. There’s been many changes in Crowborough over this time and one change I’m really looking forward to is the revamp of the old Crowborough Cross. It will certainly make a difference to have a nicer entrance to the High Street when I’m heading into town.
I’ve had an extremely eventful couple of months and the highlight for me has been the return of my kitten Milo! He went missing in July last year and even after an extensive campaign to try and find him, there was nothing. To anyone who has lost a pet in this way it is so hard as there is no closure so you just keep hoping. So almost a year after he disappeared I had Reunited with Milo a phone call from a vet in Lingfield telling me they had Milo and had performed emergency surgery on him as he had been hit by a car and someone had picked him up and taken him in. Thank goodness for his microchip and for the kind hearts of Sally and Freya Edwards who stopped to pick him up. He’s now back in full health and mischievous as ever. Miracles can happen. I’m also exited to be able to share with you that I have been short listed for the ‘Business Person of the Year’ by members of the Crowborough Chamber of Commerce. I have to wait until 18th September when the winners of all the award categories are announced at the Annual Chamber Review. Fingers crossed. Thank you to the Courtyard Clinic for sponsoring the Prize Crossword this time. A basket of foot care products worth £25 could be yours if you enter the competition on page 42. As usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline for content and advertising requests is Friday 3rd October for the November/December issue. Until next time....

The Crowborough & District Loyalty Card £50 worth of vouchers to be won each month! Congratulations to our July and August Loyalty Card Winners: Gillian Duffy from Crowborough and Deirdre Cornford of Rotherfield who each win £50 worth of vouchers. The winners collected their stamps in Mulberry, Guest’s Shoe Services, T&T DIY and Cross Country Stores . Participating in the Loyalty Card scheme is simple and potentially very rewarding for both businesses and the general public. Customers simply need to pick up a FREE Loyalty Card from any of the participating businesses, and start collecting stamps. Once the card is full add your name and address details and deposit in one of the collection boxes located at Guests Shoe Services in the High Street or T&T Plant Hire in Farningham Road, or post to the Chamber. Your card will then be entered into the prize draw for that month with one lucky winner getting £50 of vouchers to spend in any of the participating businesses. The aim of the scheme is to encourage people in the area to support the local economy; not just with retailers but also businesses providing valuable services to the community. The new Loyalty Card is a great incentive to ‘Keep It Local’!
Businesses can sign up to be part of the Loyalty Card Scheme for just £60 per year (£40 for Chamber members). There is no other cost to the business as they are not providing discounts or prizes. Any prize vouchers spent in the participating business will be reimbursed by the Chamber. A New Mayor for Crowborough
I was born in Clacton on Sea and as the son of a Royal Navy Officer have always had an affinity with the sea. I have been married to my wife Linda for 35 years and we made the move to Crowborough 30 years ago. We chose Crowborough as a home because of its country feel and its proximity to beautiful countryside. I trained as a mechanical engineer and have worked both in the U.K. and abroad managing engineering projects. Not surprisingly many of the projects I have managed have been marine based. From a young boy I have had a fascination with steam locomotives and am a life member of the Bluebell Railway. As well as being a volunteer at the railway I am a friend of Sheffield Park Station. I have been a Town Councillor since 2011 and look forward to representing our Town as Town Mayor for the next twelve months. Cllr Ron Reed Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 3 - 2014
The Palesgate Lane Meadow Project Crowborough Town Council in conjunction with Crowborough Conservation and the Sussex Pony Grazing Trust introduced pony grazing this summer as a way of sustainably managing an ecologically – important flower meadow in Crowborough. The meadow was acquired in 2012 by Crowborough Town Council and was accessed as having a very high nature conservation value. The site supports a rich but scarce and nationally declining variety of flora and fauna. The habitat has been classified as a ‘Habitat of Principle Importance’. The Sussex Pony and Conservation Trust is a registered charity set up to preserve and restore endangered species. The trust owns their own ponies and oversees numerous grazing projects within Sussex. After consultation with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Unit, the Sussex Pony Grazing Trust and Crowborough Conservation it was agreed that as the meadow is of high conservation value, grazing by ponies would be the best management option of the site. Crowborough Town Council was awarded a grant by the High Weald Sustainable development fund to support the project which included the installation of fencing, a new field gate and water trough. By implementing this type of conservation grazing scheme Crowborough Town Council hopes to conserve the meadow for future generations of Crowborough.

Design a flower bed for Crowborough
Crowborough is well known for its prolific array of flowers in and around the town centre. This year Crowborough Town Council invited primary school children in Crowborough to create a design for one of the town’s most prominent flower beds situated on Chapel Green. Ben Gaskell’s innovative idea of a design based on the colours of the schools of Crowborough impressed the judges and Ben’s design is now in full bloom on Chapel Green.

Energy Pop-Up Café opens in Crowborough Organised by Communities Matter and in partnership with Wealden District Council, Crowborough’s Energy Pop-Up Café took place at Jarvis Brook Guide & Scout Hall and Crowborough Town Hall over 4 days in June. 150 Crowborough residents visited the café and saved an average of £200 per person per year on energy bills. As well as helping people make real savings on their energy bills, advice was given on energy saving techniques in the home. Crowborough Town Clerk Philippa Hewes said “Hosting the Energy Café in the Town Hall has worked extremely well. We are delighted to see so many people making a saving on their energy bills”
Crowborough Town Council at the South of England Show Councillors Kay Moss and Ron Reed along with Operations Manager David Foot represented Crowborough Town Council at the South of England Show held in July. The council attended as part of the ‘Parishes of the Councils of East Sussex’ stand. The representatives talked to visitors about current projects instigated by the town council and councillors were also able to talk about their roles within the town council. This is of particular importance as local elections take place in 2015 and it is hoped that more people will stand as councillors to represent and become more involved in their community.

Crowborough Town Council helps locomotive society steam up Crowborough Town Council is supporting the Crowborough Locomotive Society in its plan to extend the current track at Goldsmiths recreation ground in Eridge Road. The plan is to double the length of the existing track which will enhance the ride for visitors. The railway is considered an important part of the recreation facilities available at the recreation ground and its growth is seen as a positive move for the future. The club which is currently celebrating its 25th year since being formed is run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who own and run the steam locomotives, which are used to pull the passenger carriages. They have been very successful in attracting some younger members to the society, which hopefully will secure its future and give the young volunteers an insight into the engineering that is required to build a steam locomotive. All the work to extend the existing track will be carried out by the volunteers and new members who would like to get involved are welcome. If you would like to join the club please contact John Wood on 01892 852741.

If you are a private home owner or commercial business in East Sussex / West Kent with any manner of tree or fencing requirements, then please get in touch with Stephen Hulbert of Ashwoods. We offer FREE no obligation quotations and can deal with all local council planning administration and Tree Preservation Orders. Our website – www.ashwoods.net – has more photos of examples of our work. The photo on the left shows Stephen removing a bough from a tall oak tree. He uses all his skills and experience in reducing this bough to the trunk and is fully insured for up to £10 million Public Liability Insurance and Employer’s Liability Insurance. Below, his groundsmen will clear the brushwood and process it via the wood chipper. The bough sections are then removed from the site as this client requested. Therefore, at the end of the job, the client is left with a clean and tidy solution in their garden. Ashwoods can help you with: • Tree Surgery • Stump Grinding • Hedge Maintenance
• Fencing Services • Site Clearance Palisade fencing
Unsafe Copper Beech Take-down A substantial limb on this 70ft Copper Beech (left) had snapped and had fallen, damaging a fence and posing a threat to 3 properties. On closer inspection, a large bracken fungus was also discovered on the trunk. Fungal growth, like mushrooms on or near a tree trunk, is indicative of rot or decay. The presence of fungus is particularly serious if it is profuse. In collaboration with the local council tree officer, Stephen deemed that the tree was unsafe and should be completely removed. Stephen Hulbert of Ashwoods can be seen in the photo on the right working on the trunk after the canopy has been removed. Stephen has worked as a qualified tree surgeon in the East Sussex/Kent area for 18 years. Clients range from private homeowners to those of estate & property management and site developers/builders. His work has been highly praised by clients, which is borne out by the repeat business that Ashwoods enjoys.

Latest news Annual Chamber Review
On Thursday 18th September Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce will be holding its Annual Chamber review at the Crowborough Community Centre. The Review is a chance to look back on what The Chamber has achieved in the last year and forward to future plans, the evening will also include the presentation of the Annual Chamber Awards. The evening is open to members and non members and includes a free buffet and the chance to network with other businesses from the area. Since its formation in September 2011 The Chamber has become a respected voice for business, with local councils, authorities and decision makers contacting the Chamber on a regular basis for information, views and feedback. The monthly Chamber and Networking Meetings have attracted businesses from around the area, keeping them updated on news, available funding and local charities and organisations as well as giving them the opportunity to meet and find out more about each other. The popularity of the Loyalty Card, with over 500 entries each month, and the continued success of the Summer Fun day are two of the very visible Chamber successes. Members have also benefitted from a number of other initiatives such as training events and networking opportunities as well as Chamber led campaigns including the continuing debate over the Ashdown Forest Habitats Directive and the issues around car parking in the town, with The Chambers ideas concerning station car parking being considered at a higher level. Anyone wishing to attend the Review or should contact the Chamber Secretary by Friday 12th September. Any business interested in joining should contact the Chamber Secretary, see www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk for more details.
**Monthly Business Breakfast Networking Meetings** Held on the first Tuesday of each month at The Millbrook Garden Centre Coffee Shop from 7.45-8.45am. Email secretary@crowboroughchamber.co.uk to request an invitation. This event is FREE.

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs
As always, my diary is never empty due to being married to the editor of this magazine and I’ve been experiencing even more new things in and around the area. The highlight was going to a local exhibition at J&K Gallery for the opening of their exhibition featuring works by the late Anthony Quinn. I never knew about his passion for art and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyway...
As regular readers of my column will know, I provide an alternative and highly cost-effective way for people to deal with their legal issues. Instead of using a solicitor, you can use my service and go direct to the legal expert – a Barrister, for specialist advice. Whether you wish to know how best to deal with a particular legal issue, require legal documentation to be expertly drafted for you, or you need to be represented in court, it will cost less overall to use the direct services of a Barrister instead of a solicitor. But don’t just take my word for it, have a look at the testimonials page on my website www.thebarristerbroker.com for honest feedback kindly provided by my clients. I provide Barristers to help people involved in different legal areas but one of my main areas of work is Family Law, in particular the financial settlement arrangements of couples going through a divorce or that of non-married couples following a relationship breakdown (i.e. the division of the family assets; house, car, money, etc - in other words who gets what) and contact and residence of children.
experience of this process having gone through a divorce nine years ago when my children were quite young which gives me an advantage when speaking to prospective clients who are going through the mill because I can relate to their pain.
I have clients who’s ex-partners get up to all sorts of dirty tricks in an attempt to get more than their fair share of the family assets or do their utmost to ruin their ex-partners relationship with their children. The lack of honesty, decency and human compassion displayed by some people can be truly shocking. It is therefore of enormous importance (and this should not be underestimated) that when you turn to the law to help you in your time of need, the legal advisor that you use is the most appropriate person to fight your corner. This is where I help you. I will get the most appropriate Barrister for your case; a legal expert who will work with you and for you to help you get the best outcome you can as quickly and costeffectively as you can. What do I mean when I say the “most appropriate person”? Simply this. I work only with senior Barristers, so someone who has been a Barrister for at least 15 years and very often more than 20 years. They have experience, knowledge and track record. They are used to dealing with bitterly contested divorces and child contact cases, where the other side can get up to all sorts of devious and dirty tricks. If you are advised or represented in court by an inexperienced or weak legal advisor you could end up losing what you are fighting for. Not a nice thought. Therefore, being advised and represented at the earliest possible stage by someone who has all the appropriate experience and proven track record is the only way forward in your best interests. Get the best and pay less by coming to me.
Relationship breakdowns can be one of the most traumatic times in a person’s life. Quite apart Remember, it costs nothing to speak to me but I from the obvious emotional aspect, it involves could end up saving you thousands! dealing with financial consequences and can of course be further complicated when there are children involved. I have some personal
