Editor’s Note
July/August 2016 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, Welcome to the latest issue of The Crowborough Directory. It’s been another busy couple of months as usual in and around Crowborough and another packed out day at the Crowborough Summer Fun Day in the town centre last month. I can’t believe the event is in it’s ninth year. I can also tell you the date for next year has already been set - 3rd June - so make a note in your diaries now! Another well organised event from the local Crowborough & District Chamber of Commerce. That brings me onto the latest news about the Loyalty Card, an initiative started by the local Chamber of Commerce which unfortunately will be coming to an end on 30th July after 4 years in operation. If you still have stamps to collect then do so before then and ensure your card has been dropped off at the collection point located at Guest’s Shoe Services in order to be entered into the final draw which will be taking place on 1st August. You can find more information about this decision on page 35.
I’d like to congratulate Trudy Yardley who runs the Ashdown Primary Slimming World Group who have lost an incredible 165.5 stones between them and the result has helped them donate lots of unwanted clothes to Cancer Research UK. Keep up the good work everyone! Solve the crossword puzzle on page 42 of this issue for a chance to be entered in our draw to win a prize. Up for grabs this time is a hands free bluetooth kit kindly donated by Adam Palmer of 0260 Cars - one of the products you’ll find in their stock. Don’t forget, if you belong to a local nonprofit community group or organisation and would like to include a message in this publication then it’s FREE. The magazine is delivered by Royal Mail each issue to ALL letterboxes in the TN6 area. This includes both business as well as residential properties. It’s great coverage and can certainly make a difference to attendance at your event or raising awareness of your local group. Just get in touch with me, Laura, and I can tell you more. Summer wouldn’t be summer without the Crowborough Hospital Fete taking place on the August Bank Holiday. The Friends do a fabulous job organising this and it receives great support from the local community. I hope to see you there come rain or shine! I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The deadline for the September/October 2016 issue is 29th July! Until next time! Pine Grove finally purchased by Crowborough Town Council
On 1st June Crowborough Town Council completed on the purchase of Pine Grove, the ex-Wealden District Council office block, which also houses the Library. Now the challenge is to convert the building into an Enterprise Centre and Community Hub which, when full, should provide direct employment for 150+ people thereby completing the original mission to re-energise the commercial heart of Crowborough. Cllr Quentin Burch said “This is an important moment in the history of Crowborough. The refurbishment work is extensive but we hope to open for business in the Spring of 2017.

Crowborough and Montargis celebrate 50 years of twinning Crowborough and Montargis have a 50 year bond that originated from two men with close connection during the Second World War; Colonel Maurice Buckmaster, who was the wartime head of the French section of the Special Operations Executive (amongst Colonel Buckmaster’s 480 agents were the two of the most famous SOE operatives, Violette Szabo and Odetts Churchill) and Jean Laurent, the highly decorated wartime resistance leader who was closely involved with SOE. In the 1960’s Jean Laurent and the Veterans of the Resistance suggested a link with an English town. They spoke to Colonel Buckmaster, who had become a Citizen of Honour of Montargis and honorary president of the veterans. The Mayor of Montargis, Dr Robert Szigeti and the Chairman of Crowborough Parish Council, Dr William Adam, were keen for the link to take place and the signing of the Charter of Friendship between the two towns took place in Montargis on May 22nd 1966. The Society of the Friends of Montargis was formed in 1967 with Colonel Buckmaster as the president and Dr Adam as vice president. 50 years on and the bond forged in1966 is as close as ever. Since the forming of The Society of Friends of Montargis and Les Amis du Crowborough countless visits have taken place between the two towns and lasting friendships have been made. Events to mark the 50th anniversary took place in Crowborough in May which culminated in the re-signing of the Friendship Charter by Dr Door, Mayor of Montargis, and Cllr Ron Reed, Mayor of Crowborough.

Latest news Summer Fun Day 2016 The weather stayed dry for the 9th Annual Summer Fun Day in Crowborough Town Centre and ensured another successful, well attended event. Over 40 local businesses, organisations and charities had stalls located throughout the High Street, Broadway and Croft Road and they were joined by twelve French Market traders who returned by popular demand.
Many thousands of people flocked to the area throughout the day and traders reported that a number had come from out of the area to see what Crowborough had to offer. Free entertainment was on hand to keep the kids happy including; Face Painting, Punch and Judy, Magician and Bouncy Castle as well as rides on a beautiful horse drawn carriage. There were excellent performances on the bandstand from local young talent Milly McCarron and Paige Hackworth as well as the impressive InChoir, Penny Payne Band and Any Other Business. Donations were collected throughout the day for 1st Crowborough Scouts, who will be presented with the final amount later in the year. The day could not happen without the support of our Main Sponsors: Co-Op Funeral Care, Lawson Commercial, Millbrook Garden Company and Prosperity IFA as well as our Feature Sponsors: EJ Financial, Focus All Media and Zest. Thanks also go to Banfield Residential Sales & Lettings, Crowborough Vehicle Hire (Xtra Space) and Parker Building Supplies for supplying their services free of charge to help the day go smoothly. There are more photographs from the day on the website: www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk.

Loyalty Card
The Crowborough & District Loyalty Card
***Final Loyalty Card draw to take place 1st August*** The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce has decided after four years that the Loyalty Card Scheme will cease to operate at the end of July this year. The scheme has been very popular with the public over the 4 years it has run so it has been a difficult decision for the Chamber to bring it to a close but, sadly, the number of companies participating has not met expectations. We are also aware that many businesses are now running their own Loyalty Schemes which have superseded our own. We would like to thank all those businesses that were involved with the Loyalty Card over the years and the Crowborough Directory for its support. Please submit all completed cards by 30 July at the latest for the final draw will take place on the 1 August 2016. The Chamber will continue to reimburse prize vouchers until the 1 August 2017 For more info visit www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk or email secretary@crowboroughchamber.co.uk

Appearances Aesthetics - Transforming the way we look (Pt 2) Here we are for part 2 of this series of features exploring the treatments provided by award winning Aesthetic Practitioner Gillian Huntley. So again I find myself in her comfortable Chislehurst Clinic, on her comfortable treatment couch waiting for the numbing cream to get to work...
In the last issue Gillian used her semi-permanent tattoo skills on me and I’m now the proud wearer of semi-permanent eye liner. This time I am going to be zapped with her electrolysis machine to remove some clear moles from my face and neck as well as a few other lumps and bumps that have formed under my skin over the years. Gillian started her beauty aesthetic business, appearances, in 1986 and whilst she mainly treats her clients in her home clinic in Chislehurst, she also has many clients she treats in nearby Edenbridge and BMI hospitals Chelsfield Park and Sloane Beckenham. She is fully qualified and certified and often recommended by GPs (including Harley Street) as the ‘go to’ person in her field. There are many different types of treatments Gillian is able to carry out - skins peels, scar relaxation, specialist waxing, thread vein/ pigmentation/skin tag removals and these are treatments can really transform people’s lives and boost their confidence. More often then not we simply accept things that grow on our bodies over the years as we just assume they are there to stay and that is that. Following on from my first visit to Gillian she pointed out that she could easily remove the clear moles I have on my face and from that moment on I suddenly found myself looking at my face in a new way - the clear moles becoming more noticeable and jumping out at me. I really had been looking forward to this appointment more than ever. Prior to any procedure, Gillian will go over everything in detail as to what the treatment will involve so you know exactly what will

happen. She is extremely good at putting her clients’ at ease before any treatment starts so you have nothing to worry about. The mole removal process was similar to having semiGillian Huntley permanent treatment - the areas to be treated had numbing cream applied to reduce any pain which may be caused during the process. If my moles had been coloured then Gillian would have required a Doctor’s permission before starting the treatment. She will also send her patients to see a Doctor if she thinks there is something that could potentially cause problems to her clients’ health. Picture 1 below shows the largest of the clear moles she will be removing from my face. Once the cream had taken effect Gillian could begin my treatment. This time by using electrolysis which uses electricity to direct heat to the affected areas in a very accurate procedure. There are a number of different size probes available for this treatment and Gillian will select the most appropriate size for the area to be treated. All her equipment is sterile and she will always show the patient the pack containing the probe before opening it for use.

The larger the defect, the longer it takes to treat but as you can see in Pic 2, I was still able to keep smiling throughout the procedure. As with the semi-permanent treatments you can feel a slight discomfort but there is no real pain to be felt. After my treatment (Pic 3) my face did come up in blotches and Gillian pointed out that the quicker you come up in blotches, the quicker they will disappear. She will always run through the aftercare, providing leaflets with detailed information and the necessary creams and gels to use on the treated areas. The following day www.crowboroughdirectory.co.uk

Skin tags are removed in just the same way and even my husband, Russell Burton-Lawrence, went under the probe of Gillian to have a large tag removed from the side of his Before After eye. He has been delighted with the result. It’s not just for women! What Gillian can do with her special equipment and skills is really quite incredible and you’ll find plenty of testimonials on her website about the difference she has made to her clients.

Some of the other deformities she can remove are: warts red veins cholesterol patches (xanthelasma) So if you have something on your skin that you no longer wish to live with, you don’t have to anymore. Gillian is more than happy to see you for a consultation

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality Today
The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation fo the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implemantation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented but if it is 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01892 278171 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.
