Editor’s Note
January/February 2016 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers,
Happy New Year! As usual I am writing my note before I’ve even had a chance to celebrate Christmas as it is still 2 weeks away so I can only image that when the lovely team at Royal Mail are delivering this issue I will be feeling relaxed (I hope), maybe a little stuffed from all the Christmas excess, and thinking about my plans for 2016 such as my stand at the Business Expo taking place on 1st March in the main hall at the Community Centre. I really did enjoy it last year, meeting so many people. It’s certainly worth popping along to if you’re in the area.
My radio show which I present with my husband is growing from strength to strength and I’m delighted to know some of you tune into the show. While some of the cast of the recent Cinderella Panto were over here switching on the Christmas Lights, I managed to get a live interview with cast member, Louise Jameson who played the Fairy Godmother, on the show. You can tune into the show live from 10-11am online at www. channelradio.co.uk or visit the website www.thecommunityshow.net where you can access podcasts of all the shows to date. It’s to promote all things community, charity and fundraising taking place...we’d love to hear from you! Thinking back to the panto and the tickets we had as a prize last time brings me neatly on to the prize in this issue’s competition, a £20 Amazon voucher courtesy of local author (and artist) Erica Adams (www.ericaadamswebsite.com). Erica is celebrating the launch of her new book on Kindle, Jade and Amber, so the lucky winner may well wish to download her book, or even some of her other ones as this is by no means her first. I originally became aware of Erica as she is a keen crossworder and has even won one of these prizes from this magazine in the past. Erica, by all means do the crossword but this is one competition you’re not allowed to enter! Turn to page 42 to get started on this issue’s puzzle. Don’t forget: if you belong to a community organisation, group or charity and you have an event coming up, email the details to me and I can include on the relevant What’s on page. This magazine is delivered to ALL properties in the TN6 area by Royal Mail so what better way to publicise your event to all your neighbours then by listing it in here. With 11,000 copies distributed each time, you’ll not get better coverage in the local area.

You can also find The Crowborough Directory on Facebook where I post reminders of the events taking place and other items of interest. I find social media a fantastic way to keep up-to-date with things going on around the area and there are many pages dedicated to Crowborough. The magazine is also available to view online via www.crowboroughdirectory.co.uk - where you’ll also find links to other useful information such as rates, features, useful numbers and links to the groups featured in the Clubs & Organisations section of this magazine. If you have your group listed then please don’t forget to send me any updates for your listing. Alternatively you may find that your group isn’t listed in which case simply email me the information and I can include it from the next issue. So start planning what new things you can do in 2016.
In December 2015 The Crowborough Directory turned 9 years old! I’ve been delighted with the success of this magazine and how well it’s been received by everyone. The feedback I get from you and the success it brings to many of the businesses who advertise in here is fantastic. Some advertisers say they don’t need to advertise anywhere else as this magazine brings in enough work to keep them busy. Even the front cover space has been booked up for this entire year already. If you’re a local business and you’d like to find out more about advertising then please just give me a call on 01732 864 878. I make the whole process as easy as possible and can provide assistance with artwork design too. I hope you enjoy this issue and please, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The deadline for the March/April 2016 issue is 29th January! Until next time!

January/February 2016 The Crowborough Directory
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone, full of joyful occasions with family and friends! Despite all the festive cheer, it’s that season when miserable cold wet weather can turn our thoughts towards next year’s holidays. Towards the end of December, there’s always a huge upsurge in holiday research and bookings, and January brings special deals in the travel industry. With a mind-blowing array of choices on offer, why not let me listen to your dream holiday requirements and narrow down the selection for you? There are many advantages to booking your holiday early, most of all, having something to look forward to! You’ll have lots of choice of accommodation and seats on aeroplanes, and prices are lower when there’s still plenty available to purchase. You’ll also be able to secure your holiday with a deposit and pay later, which I am sure would be a welcome budget relief after Christmas. City breaks, beach holidays and all-inclusives remain top of holidaymakers’ lists for 2016, according to an ABTA survey, but there’s also an emerging desire to explore more unusual destinations - like the Coffee Triangle in Colombia. Whether it’s beach, city, skiing, cruise, allinclusive, cycling, trekking or family holidays you’re looking for, now is the best time to get your 2016 holiday booked. I am a one-stop shop for all your travel needs, available 24/7 at a time that suits you. I have world-class systems and competitive prices at my fingertips to create your perfect holiday. Give your home a fresh new feel in 2016 Affordable • Creative • Practical • Interior Design and knowledge to suit any kind of budget and has a knack for finding the cheaper equivalents to some of the expensive room furnishings you might see in a magazine.
Do you ever take a look around your home and think “I wish I could do something different with this place?” but you just don’t know where to start, or even what you could actually do that would work... Well, help is now at hand since Sue Slack launched her business “Style on a Shoestring”. What began as a hobby many years ago has now turned into a new local business in Crowborough. Sue has lived in the area for many years and loves being able to work locally, bringing new life into people’s rooms or making homes more appealing to potential buyers. She is able to tailor her skills
She has worked with a variety of clients, each bringing in her talents for very different reasons. Some of her clients are just too scared as they don’t know where to start, others don’t have the time to look into ‘revamping’ their rooms but want to make some changes to their homes. There are many ways Sue can work with you. If you’re just looking for ideas and inspiration for something that WILL work for your room or if you know you will need assistance in making an idea a reality, Sue can do as much or as little needed to get your project started (or finished). The first visit from Sue is free so she can find out what you are trying to achieve, what ideas (if any) you may already have and she can then discuss how she can help. All her
ideas and suggestions are available from the high street or online at affordable prices! The next step, would be for Sue to return to take pictures of your room and find out what items you wish to keep in order that she can incorporate these into her ideas. Sometimes just a well thought out colour scheme works but adding smaller items such as cushions, lamps and mirrors or rearranging furniture can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a room. Other times slightly more work is needed but everything will be discussed early on in the process. Sue can create easy to use “mood boards” Mood Board for a lounge to help you furnish your room or if you don’t have time to implement the ideas yourself she can source every item on your mood board for you; from a new affordable armchair to fabrics as well as the suppliers. If you would like to make an appointment with Sue or find out more about her service call her on 01892 661817 or email yourstyleonashoestring@ gmail.com or visit the website: www.styleonashoestring.biz

Independent Co-educational Day School under 30 minutes from Crowborough Excellent GCSE and A Level results and with competitive fees
Lingfield is a fully co-educational, independent day school only 30 minutes’ drive from Crowborough. The School has over 900 students with ages ranging from 2.5 to 18. We pride ourselves on being progressive and innovative whilst being family focused and rooted in the local community. The School has grown significantly in the last 20 years and our facilities are modern and well resourced. Academic standards are high and university destinations are impressive. There is an excellent Scholarship programme available which is compulsory for scholars but open to any interested students. Academic Scholarships are available, as well as scholarships for excellence in Music, Art, Drama and Sport. Please see the Admissions section of our website www.lingfieldnd.co.uk for further
details. The Sports programme is highly successful: fixtures are played against all of the major independent schools in Kent and East Sussex. However, we are keen that sport
is available to all. A to E level teams play in a majority of our major sports and we also cater for many of the “minority” sports including Golf, Badminton, Table-Tennis and Equestrian activities. Trips are a vital part of the curriculum with sports tours to Europe and beyond. Pupils have undertaken many culturally enriching visits, for example to Paris, Amsterdam, Rome and Iceland. The Duke of Edinburgh programme is particularly strong with nearly all of Year 10 taking their Bronze award and many of them progressing onto Silver and then Gold.

Feature very good but also a very friendly school where the pastoral care is exceptional. Teachers go the “extra mile” to deliver quality lessons and ensure they know each tutee of their form group. The communications between the parents and the School are first rate.
The Co-curricular programme is something that we are especially proud of, with all students participating in at least three lunchtime clubs a week ranging from Photography to Astronomy. The House system is very popular and interhouse competitions are a highlight of the school calendar. Not only do the Houses compete in traditional sports but also in other activities such as quizzes, problem solving and board games for those who aren’t particularly sporty. One of the characteristics of the School is its generous attitude towards charity. Many local as well as national charities are supported. From football kits to Malawi, to local charities such as Jigsaw and Crawley Open House, the students give up their time and money generously.
There has also been a significant investment in Digital Learning and the range of iPads and Apple TVs alongside two mac suites means that traditional teaching sits comfortably with cutting edge technology. To get a real taste of what Lingfield can offer, take the short hop across the Forest and make an appointment to tour the School. We look forward to seeing you in the near future!

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs choosing the ‘right’ lawyer for your needs is a really big deal. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that just because someone is a qualified lawyer (solicitor or barrister) that they are going to be right for you. Happy New Year readers and I hope you’ve all been enjoying the festive season but now it's almost time for everything to get back to normal.
In my role as The Barrister Broker I get asked many different questions so I thought it would be useful to include the most frequently asked questions that I have had over the last 12 months. If you have a question not covered here, please feel free to give me a call and ask! What makes using a barrister through you different to finding my own one on the internet? Just as with any profession some people are more effective than others and unfortunately by the time you find out how poor or incompetent someone is it’s usually too late! Therefore
34
I remove the ‘guesswork’ to choosing the right lawyer. I will provide you with a highly experienced Barrister from my panel; someone who I have worked with before (sometimes for many years) who has a proven track record and who I know has the necessary skills and experience that you will benefit from. Although you’re known as The Barrister Broker, are you a barrister? No, I am not legally qualified and therefore cannot give legal advice. My background was working as a Barristers’ Clerk in London for over 20 years (ever seen the TV series Silk?) so I have extensive experience working with barristers and facilitating their services to clients. I thought barristers could only work with solicitors, is this not the case? No, not any more. The rules
Please call 01732 864 878 to feature your business
changed several years ago to allow a client to be able to go direct to a barrister without the need to go to a solicitor first. What is the difference between barristers and solicitors? It’s essentially training and skill sets. Solicitors are licensed litigators and conduct the process of litigation, i.e. project-managing a client’s case, completing court forms, issuing court applications, lodging documents with the court, corresponding with the other side and the court, giving legal advice, etc. Barristers are specially trained legal advisers and court room advocates. They are selfemployed, independent and objective lawyers, trained to advise clients’ on the strengths and weaknesses of their case. They have specialist knowledge and experience in and out of court, which can make a substantial difference to the outcome of a case. Solicitors and Barristers are both Lawyers, which is simply a generic term used to describe anyone who is a Licensed Legal Practitioner.

The Crowborough Directory January/February 2016
• When you pay a Barrister you are paying for their time and expertise, not the cost of running a solicitor’s office; • Barristers have special legal knowledge which means they generally deal with the issues more quickly; • ‘Fixed Fees’ enable clients to know the cost in advance of agreeing to have any work done – completely transparent with no nasty surprise bills later on! The idea of taking ownership of my own case sounds rather daunting can I get assistance from you if I need it? Yes I can provide support in a number of different ways. For many of my clients emotional support is crucial – always having someone available at the end of a phone to talk to when something arises or
things are getting tough can be very reassuring - often in divorce and separation and child custody matters. I can help you keep organised such as complying with any deadlines, printing documents and generally helping you to keep your paperwork in order. I’m half way through a legal issue – can I contact you to see if I may be better off finishing the process with one of your barristers? Yes you can and frankly I would urge you to give me a call to talk your matter through. I have had a number of situations where people have already spent considerable sums of money on their legal matter but don’t feel they are getting value for money for whatever reason so they stop using the solicitor and come to me. I arranged for a barrister to advise and represent them and despite the client having changed legal representation, I still saved them money on what they would have spent had they remained with the solicitor, and in some of my cases this has run
into thousands of pounds saved! I have a court hearing coming up, will I be able to use one of your barristers to represent me? If I can help you I will. You need to give me a call to tell me about your case, when and where the hearing is and we can take it from there.

How will using a barrister help me reduce my legal costs? There are a number of reasons that make barristers a much more cost-effective legal solution compared to solicitors. For example:
Visit my website www.thebarristerbroker.com and see what my clients say on the Testimonials page. For the most cost-effective and expert legal advice and representation available, call me on 01732 866 562. I will be able to save you money.

Is it especially beautiful at a particular time of year? Your garden does not need to be huge, as long as you feel you have something that would be of interest to visitors then we would love to hear from you. Bird Conservation Programme at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club
Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, as owners of Crowborough Common which incorporates the golf course have instigated an initiative over the last two years to introduce bird boxes on the golf course. The aim is to encourage the nesting of birds and increase the birdlife throughout the whole of the land we own. One of our members, Jim Tyrell, is the driving force behind this plan and has introduced twenty four bird boxes erected by the green staff in various locations on
the course. He has been helped enormously by Alan Nottage of the Ashdown Bird Group who has been instrumental in monitoring the activity in the boxes and feeding this information to Jim who has collated the activity seen in each box. The Green staff and the members have reported sightings which has all helped to produce a comprehensive report. The information includes details of the twenty four different species so far recorded, whether they produced young and if they reached the stage where they fledged. Some unusual sightings were observed with perhaps the most unusual being the Blue Tit which decided to make its home for the second year in succession in the fountain near to the 7th. Not only did it make a nest but
successfully raised its brood who eventually fledged. Two of the bird boxes provided a home for bees and thus helped to preserve this vulnerable species of wildlife. The club would like to thank both Jim Tyrell and Alan Nottage for their dedication to this project and for the green staff who not only have erected the boxes but cleaned them out at the end of the year and numbered them so sites can be readily identified. The club is determined to protect the wildlife on the course and this initiative is just one of the ways we are able to further this aim. If any member of the public with an interest in the bird life on the common would like a copy of the report then please contact the club on 01892 661 511.
