Editor’s Note

September/October 2015  The Crowborough Directory

Dear Readers, Wow, where did summer go?

It’s been a whirlwind of

activity as usual with the traditional fetes, fairs and fun

days taking place. I was particularly interested in the Jarvis Brook Community Centre Project - a group working to raise

funds to build a community centre. You can find out more from their facebook page www.facebook.com/jarvisbrookcommunitycentre

Don’t forget, if you belong to a community group or organisation then it’s FREE for you to include your community messages on the events and community pages. Just submit your content by the relevant deadline - it’s as easy as that.

As well as the end of the summer holidays and the youngsters going

back to school, September of course means it’s carnival time in town! If you’re

new to the area and have not yet witnessed the big parade then put 12th September in your diary now. Not only is there an afternoon of fun on Chapel

Green but the Torchlight Procession is most certainly a spectacular sight with many local clubs and organisations taking part.

We have yet another fantastic prize on offer in the prize crossword competition - £50 worth of framing at J&K Gallery Ltd.

Ideal for turning one of your

holiday snaps into a piece to be admired on your living room wall. Turn to

page 42 and get your thinking caps working. If you’re a business and you’d like to sponsor a future crossword, all you need to do is donate a prize and you’ll get your logo on the front cover - it’s simple!

I hope you enjoy this issue and please, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured

in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The deadline for the November/ December issue is 2nd October! Until next time...

Travel Feature

September/October 2015  The Crowborough Directory

A new kind of travel agent has opened for business in Crowborough, one where the emphasis is on personal service and is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Towards the end of 2014 I joined award winning company Travel Counsellors, which has over 1,400 travel advisors and is one of the top scoring companies in the world when it comes to customer service, having achieved a world beating score of over 90% in its independent customer satisfaction survey (Net Promoter Score). Travel Counsellors is a travel agency with a twist. All of its independent advisors are equipped with leading edge technology allowing them to work from home. The technology I have at my fingertips is incredible and means I can search through hundreds of holiday options at highly competitive prices. I am also able to tailor make trips to meet each individual’s travel needs. Many people don’t have time to talk or even think about their holiday during the working week, so I’m sure being able to discuss their plans at a time that suits them will prove really popular. My current customers already appreciate the personal service and attention to detail that I can offer them as a Travel Counsellor. As part of the Travel Counsellor financial trust, I offer 100% financial protection for anything booked through me, giving you peace of mind that your money is safe and you will get what you’ve paid for. For more information or to discuss your forthcoming travel plans, contact me, Cornel, on 01892 882 750 or cornel@travelcounsellors.com www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/cornel.schalkwyk

If you are a private home owner or commercial business in East Sussex / West Kent with any manner of tree or fencing requirements, then please get in touch with Stephen Hulbert of Ashwoods. We offer FREE no obligation quotations and can deal with all local council planning administration and Tree Preservation Orders. Our website – www.ashwoods.net – has more photos of examples of our work. The photo on the left shows Stephen removing a bough from a tall oak tree. He uses all his skills and experience in reducing this bough to the trunk and is fully insured for up to £10 million Public Liability Insurance and Employer’s Liability Insurance. Below, his groundsmen will clear the brushwood and process it via the wood chipper. The bough sections are then removed from the site as this client requested. Therefore, at the end of the job, the client is left with a clean and tidy solution in their garden. Ashwoods can help you with: • Tree Surgery • Stump Grinding • Hedge Maintenance

• Fencing Services • Site Clearance Palisade fencing

Unsafe Copper Beech Take-down A substantial limb on this 70ft Copper Beech (left) had snapped and had fallen, damaging a fence and posing a threat to 3 properties. On closer inspection, a large bracken fungus was also discovered on the trunk. Fungal growth, like mushrooms on or near a tree trunk, is indicative of rot or decay. The presence of fungus is particularly serious if it is profuse. In collaboration with the local council tree officer, Stephen deemed that the tree was unsafe and should be completely removed. Stephen Hulbert of Ashwoods can be seen in the photo on the right working on the trunk after the canopy has been removed. Stephen has worked as a qualified tree surgeon in the East Sussex/Kent area for 19 years. Clients range from private homeowners to those of estate & property management and site developers/builders. His work has been highly praised by clients, which is borne out by the repeat business that Ashwoods enjoys.

So, what makes Pilates different from other forms of exercise and just what exactly is specialist Pilates equipment? There was only one way for The Crowborough Directory to find out so I put on my leggings and headed over to Teresa’s studio to learn more.

September/October 2015  The Crowborough Directory

It is great to live in a community that doesn’t just sigh or tut over the state of the world but takes action. People in Crowborough have shown a commitment to making a difference in the world by choosing to buy products in the local shops with the Fairtrade logo, and Crowborough became a Fairtrade Town in 2008. A list of products available locally is on their website. www.crowboroughfairtrade.wordpress.com Why not join in too?

Crowborough Open Studios 5-6 September Following the success of last year’s inaugural Open Studios in Crowborough, East Sussex, local arts organisation Crowborough Arts will be running an even bigger and better Open Studios event over the weekend of 5 – 6 September. 42 artists will be exhibiting in 24 working studios and open houses, offering a wide range of work, including paintings, photography, ceramics, textiles, upcycled vintage clothing, mixed media and jewellery. Exhibitors include: nationally-acclaimed, multi-award winning local artist Justin Todd; jeweller Frances Geesin and ceramicist Yolande Beer, who have worked in Japan in collaboration with other craftsmen and in industry; Sue Petzsaft, one of the founders of Crowborough Arts, working in mixed media, painting, ceramics – and indeed almost anything she can lay her hands on; and local groups such as ShedArt and Crowborough Creative Art Group. A number of venues also offer refreshments. Studios will be open from 11am-5pm each day. For more information visit: www.crowborough-arts.org.uk

Crowborough & District Lions update “The pride is back! Crowborough Lion’s are at this years Crowborough Carnival and with a new lady President to start the Lion year we are roaring to go with all our activities Our fund raising is continuing attending the fêtes in the area by the schools and Town Fair. Of course we’ll be at the Annual Hospital Fête on August bank holiday Monday with our bottle tombola and cut the card for food tins plus Candy floss and Pop Corn by raising monies for the Hospital. We will be around the local estates as always to see what we can collect for our stalls. Money we raise goes to help the local community and after we entertained a hundred senior citizens to afternoon tea and entertainment last month, we helped a family with a a request of a travelling bed for a young boy with debilitating illness; another young boy with Phela-McDermid Syndrome; a Girl Guide was helped to a trip to India. We’ve provided a notice board for St Johns Pre-School and we have saved monies to a pledge to help Jarvis Community Centre, and other amounts for those in need.

If you know an individual or organisation that could benefit from Lion’s financial support, please contact the club treasure at treasururer@crowlions.org.uk We are holding again this year our Diabetic Screening at the Town Hall on the 19th September following the success of last year so do come along and get yourself tested. On the social side we held our Handover dinner at Barnsgate Manor where the previous President Bob Dubock handed over to Hilary Lyon. We also had a Sausage & Mash get together meal for members in August plus a walk around the forest with a stop at a pub for a meal and drink, so plenty of social activities for members to enjoy. We inducted a new lady member to Lions last month at our new venue - Crowborough Social Club - where we meet every second Tuesday of the month at 8.15pm. All are welcome to come and see what we do.” by David Martin - 01892 652300 | loxfield@googlemail.com www.crowlions.org.uk | Find us on facebook

DemonSkinz - making your marketing stick! Not everyone can boast a portfolio of their work on display in their local high street although for Nick Tunstill, it’s where you’ll find quite a few examples. Shops such as Mister Smith Interiors, J&K Gallery, GT Tyres, Michael Brooker and Coppards are just a few of the local businesses he’s created signage for. Nick is a local sign writer who also produces specialist print and vinyl graphics.

to the same quality and high standards as he does for his own business. For instance, Nick can create graphics to be fixed onto clothing and quite conveniently next door is Fusion1 embroidery service, owned and run by Mandy, who will ensure that your clothing is embroidered to a high standard. Graphics are not just a superb way for businesses to promote themselves either statically or on the move but they are also an excellent way of drawing attention should you have a short-term promotion. They don’t have to be a permanent fixture and Nick works with many materials which can be used on a temporary basis, such as printed static clings for shop windows if you have a sale, or digital wallpaper which is self-adhesive and can be used over and over without leaving a residue.

What originally began as a hobby eventually turned into a business nearly five years ago. Nick runs his own motorbike magazine, South East Biker, and from this he began to receive requests for bike graphics, stickers and signage for bike shops. After 35 years in the print industry he realised he could turn his hobby into a business and was ready for a new challenge, Just looking around his studio, I could see so DemonSkinz was born. that the graphics he produces are not just for If you visit the office/studio on Friar’s Gate Farm businesses but things could also be used in our you realise that the possibility of homes or if organising what you can create with specialist a special event for print and vinyl graphics is endless. friends or family.
