The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Happy New Year! I hope you’ve managed to enjoy the festive season as much as possible and are now looking forward to what 2018 has in store. I’m always planning my year ahead over the Christmas period and setting myself goals. I also enjoy looking back at the highlights from the previous year and the most memorable one for me was when I was nominated as the media spokesperson for the Edenbridge Bonfire Society. It was certainly a new experience to be speaking in front of the TV cameras (I’m used to radio as I have my own weekly show) and it did take some getting used to but by the end I really was enjoying myself. I certainly hope I get the opportunity again this year. Well done to everyone involved in the 2017 Bonfire event - the fireworks were impressive and the parade a joy to watch. If you missed it then the whole parade and fireworks display were filmed live and can be viewed on the Edenbridge Bonfire Society’s Facebook Page. In November I had the pleasure of joining EdenARA (Edenbridge Active Retirement Association) for their 10th Anniversary celebrations at the WI Hall. As the magazine has been running for so many years I remember including a piece on the launch of the group 10 years ago. Pictured left is the founder of EdenARA, Peter Nichols, with chairperson, Stephanie King. There are currently 140 members who meet monthly, with around 100 members at each meeting. If you would be interested in joining the group you can contact Stephanie on 01732 864 487. Don’t forget, if you have any messages to the community or events that you would like included in future issues of this magazine, just email them to info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk and I will include them. It’s free for all not-for-profit groups to have their information included here. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Until next time... Panto-time with Forge Singers Amatuer Dramatics

Once Christmas and New Year are over, January can seem such a quiet month... unless of course you are part of the Forge Singers Amateur Dramatics then you will be busy rehearsing for the annual pantomime which this year is Jack and the Beanstalk. The Forge Singers have been entertaining local residents for over 6o years and have previously performed for Winston Churchill and Lord Astor. The group have been rehearsing in earnest since September to ensure that everything will be alright on the night. I was fortunate to join them for one of their rehearsals before Christmas to get a flavour of what the audience can expect from this year.

Jack and the Beanstalk, which is taking place at the beginning of February, is being directed by Tracey Newbury and Di Kingham and is certainly going to provide more laughs, plenty of audience participation (it is panto after all) and more merriment than you can shake a stick at. One of the major elements in progress was the costume design and Di was busy rushing around after cast members to get measurements. There is still plenty to do but, as always, I know it will all come together on opening night as it always does every year. With only three evenings of performances and a matinee you’d be wise to purchase your ticket in advance to ensure a seat at the WI Hall - I already have mine so I might see you there!

The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2018

Our Community Warden during the last and previous Autumns with bulb donations made by local residents and businesses. The Warden also co-ordinates the team of volunteer litter-pickers which augments routine street cleaning, and also the Speedwatch volunteers monitoring driving behaviour. More people are needed to train and join the latter scheme, to work in teams of three collecting speed readings which are submitted to the Police data-base. From that information relevant action will be taken by the Police. Anyone interested in joining this scheme can call Rose on 07920 099 235.

Helping to make Edenbridge an even better place to live is the role of the town’s Community Warden, currently filled by Rose Briggs. Since the role was created in 2002, it has evolved into something unique serving the specific needs of this community. Although the Warden has no legal powers, their activities range from arranging graffiti removal and removal of fly-tipping and abandoned vehicles, to liaison with the police, local councils, and housing associations. The Warden is also able to provide home security advice, especially for vulnerable residents, and also works closely with dog-owners to combat dog-fouling in the area. In order to maintain a pleasant enviroment for everyone, the Warden is able to respond swiftly to matters arising. Rose has also organised and co-ordinated the planting of roadside bulbs

The Edenbridge role is not the same as the KCC Community Wardens (which do not cover the town), neither is it the same as the PCSOs. The Warden is supported by a Partnership of organisations which contribute voluntarily to a “jig-saw” of funding and the role makes a link between a network of organisations working for local people. With a visible presence around the town the Warden provides a friendly contact point to exchange pieces of information which can be so useful – in both directions. Rose was ‘Highly Commended’ in the Community Safety category at last year’s Sevenoaks Community & Voluntary Awards and also gained a Certificate of Achievement in the Individual Community Champion category for the work she has done already in her time as our town’s Community Warden. If you’d like to get in touch with Rose you can do so via Edenbridge Town Council on 01732 865 368.

News from the Community Bereavement Support for Young People Community Jigsaw (South East) supports bereaved children, young people and their families and also those affected by a family member having a terminal diagnosis in the local area. The death or serious illness of a family member can be devastating and bring many challenges into the life of a young person. Children need to be given age appropriate information and support so that they can understand what is happening within their family. Parents may need reassurance and support during such a difficult time.

They will have different responses to death and dying depending on their age and experience. The impact of bereavement can be devastating and have a major impact on children’s home life, school and friendships. It may also affect their health, behaviour and ability to cope in school. To find out more about how Jigsaw (South East) can help, contact: Telephone: 01342 313895 Email: info@jigsawsoutheast.org.uk Website: jigsawsoutheast.org.uk

It is important that children are allowed to grieve in their own way and in their own time.
