Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, What an action packed couple of months it’s been but summer is always a time when there’s plenty going on every weekend. After signing off for print with the last issue I hopped on a plane to Croatia to experience my very first sailing holiday, on a flotilla with Nautilus Yachting. It was my first holiday in about six years so I was very excited indeed. It really was a great way to explore the Croatian coastline especially when we motored upriver to visit the Krka National Park with their breath taking waterfalls. So, why am I sharing my holiday? Okay, I couldn’t wrangle one as a prize in this issue’s crossword but Nautilus Yachting have offered the lucky winner 4 tickets to the London Boat Show which takes place from 10th - 14th January 2018. A great day out and you’ll be able to meet the Nautilus team there as well. I was also extremely proud to have been nominated for the ‘Best Business in the Community’ at the annual Community & Voluntary Awards run by Sevenoaks District Council for all the work I do in supporting the community with my publications as well as my radio show. I might not have won the category but it was lovely to have been nominated and to receive a framed certificate in recognition of my achievements. I also got to meet Len Goodman who was presenting some of the awards and what an entertaining chap he is. I found myself in Sevenoaks again at the Mayoresses (Cllr Maxine Chakowa) Cocktail Party at beautiful Knole House to raise money for her chosen charity of the year, Breast Cancer Care. I obviously had lady luck with me that day as I won a HUGE bottle of Prosecco in the raffle which my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed drinking. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Edenbridge Fuchsia and Pelargonium Society and I was delighted to be invited to a garden luncheon hosted by Lorraine Harrington at her spectacular gardens near Four Elms. It was an extremely hot afternoon but a thoroughly enjoyable one. The week before the celebratory luncheon Lorraine had opened up her gardens to raise money for SUDEP (Sudden Death in Epilepsy) charity. She had over 500 visitors to her garden and raised over £5,000. I’ve included a picture at the end so you can see for yourself what fabulous gardens she has. 12 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • September/October 2017 As is so often the case, I was again at the Edenbridge WI Hall to see the latest production by the Forge Singers - Magic of the Musicals. I want to congratulate everyone for putting on another sterling performance. The music, costumes, and choreography were fantastic. If you’d like to support the Forge Singers, why not go along to their fundraising tea party (further details on page 28) I would like to give a special thank you ‘shout out’ to readers Janie and Chris Cooper of Marsh Green as they hosted my best friend and her family from the U.S. at their Air BnB in Marsh Green. If you’re looking for a large family sized accommodation then I can certainly recommend Ockhams Farm - a beautiful location. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Until next time...

Edenbridge Bellringers Quite often, if the wind is blowing in the right direction, I can just about hear the bells of the parish church ringing on a Tuesday evening and I always love that sound. So it was a pleasure to be invited to join the group for an evening and try my hand at bell ringing.
let loose on the end of the rope, experienced ringer Ian explained the dynamics using a small model of a bell so I could understand the process involved. Just sitting to one side and listening to the ringing was a very pleasurable experience.
The group meet every Tuesday and start their practice at 8pm although it’s wise to turn up a little beforehand. I entered the belfry and went up through a trap door in the floor and was given a warm welcome by everyone. The group is very diverse, from young to old with a complete mix of abilities.
Still, as I always say, the best way to experience something is give it a go first hand so I had Richard Dyson show me the ropes. I quickly learned that it is no where near as easy as it looks either. You do not have to be strong to ring the bells, even the heaviest which weighs just over 14cwt. It’s all about the movement and if you’re not careful it actually is possible to go shooting up to the ceiling on the end of a rope.
I did once have a go on a portable set of bells that are often found at the local fairs and fêtes in the area but this was a completely different experience. I had expected for some reason to be able to see the actual bells themselves but it was explained that if there were no sound proofing then we would all be deafened! Our parish church has eight bells ranging in tone and each Tuesday ringers from bell towers in neighbouring towns, villages as well as local residents turn up to ring. Our bells are considered to be one of the finest sets in Kent. The first thing I was taught was to keep my feet flat on the floor otherwise I could get caught up in one of the ropes. Before I was
I was told that learning to ring the bells is like learning to drive a car - some can get the hang of it very quickly while for others it may take longer. Once you can ring though you would be welcome at any bell tower. The band that rings them also rings for Sunday services, weddings and other special events. The group welcome anyone who would like to give it a go to come along and join them on a Tuesday evening. You don’t need to have a music background either. Stone Ness Walled Garden Blink and you might miss the entrance to this wonderful, peaceful retreat located on the A264 in Ashurst near Langton Green. Luckily I had done my homework and recognised the logo to Stone Ness Walled Garden on the roadside. Once parked I followed the path that seemed to disappear deep into the undergrowth. I then found myself in front of a door in the middle of a long wall…all very intriguing indeed. On approaching the door I could smell the delights of a BBQ and hear laughter and chatting – I had obviously found the right place. The day I visited was the garden’s annual Open Day, giving the opportunity for members of the public to come and visit and meet some of the volunteers and users of the garden. I learned a lot about this charity who provide therapeutic horticulture to members of the local community with learning difficulties and/
or mental health issues. The charity is run by Project Manager Jean Burgess, who used to be a vet in Rusthall for many years before taking on the task of creating the Stone Ness Walled Garden as it is now with the help of her dedicated team of volunteers. The home and garden used to be a kitchen garden for a small mansion nearby and was completely overgrown when Jean took over. Therapy is provided through horticultural activities which are led by volunteers and approximately 30 adults visit each week in small groups and sessions are tailored to meet the needs of those taking part. They might be sowing seeds or planting out vegetables, gathering fruit. As all gardeners know, there is always something that needs doing. It was a pleasure spending the morning with such a friendly group, I even caught up with Stuart and Linda Parrish who I know from my Bonfire Society activities, and I’d like to thank everyone for their warm hospitality on my visit. To find out more, or even volunteer, visit stonenesswalledgarden.org or telephone Jean on 01892 740 305.

News from the Community Citizens Advice, Edenbridge & Westerham urging you to act on scams Citizens Advice, Edenbridge and Westerham has been spreading the word about scams to help stop more people across Edenbridge and Westerham from being conned. The charity took part in Scams Awareness Month in July, a campaign encouraging people to report and talk about scams. The drive to get more people reporting scams comes as national Citizens Advice reveals a 17% increase in people being scammed after purchasing ‘phantom goods’. The scam works by conning shoppers into buying high value items, namely online, which turn out not to exist. The average loss was £1,100. People were most likely to be scammed when buying cars, flights and furniture. Other ‘phantom goods’ included jewellery and cameras. The Citizens Advice consumer service received 555 reports of ‘phantom goods’ scams during January and March 2017, compared with 475 over the same period the year before. Scams operating in the local area reported to Citizens Advice, Edenbridge and Westerham over the past year include computer virus scams where a scammer calls someone up and says their computer has a virus which they can
