Editor’s Note
March/April 2016 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, I hope you are well and enjoying 2016. My work has taken me on many adventures as usual and I can’t believe how time is flying this year already. The beginning of the year is often slow as everyone eases themselves back into the swing of things after the busy Christmas period and there are now many more events to enjoy over the coming months - just turn to page 20 for the latest What’s On guide. There are spring fairs, jumble sales, nearly new sales and more taking place. At the time of writing this I have just been enjoying England’s first game in this year’s RBS Six Nations rugby tournament. How fantastic that the captain should be Crowborough’s very own Dylan Hartley who studied in the area and played at Crowborough RFC in his youth. Well done to the England team for winning their first match! This is my favourite tournament so I’m really looking forward to the other games.
I’m also busy preparing for the Business Expo on 1st March at the Community Centre. It was a great event last year and really gave local business owners the opportunity to showcase their products and services. This year it’s running from 10am to 2pm so if you’re in the local area then please do drop in to say hello. A big thank you to this issue’s crossword sponsor, the Cowpie Country Show, who are giving the lucky winner a family ticket (2 adults/2 children and worth £34) to their annual show which takes place this year on Sunday 8th May in Lingfield. I went along to this event last year for the first time and I was surprised at just how big it is - a full day out of entertainment and activities for everyone. I apologise that the crossword was extremely difficult in the last issue (although not impossible) so I’m hoping this one will be a little easier for you to complete! You can even drop off your entries to me at the Business Expo if you’re in the area. I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The deadline for the May/June 2016 issue is 1st April! Until next time!

HOSPICE IN THE WEALD Crowborough Friends A group of friends who have raised more than £250,000 for Hospice in the Weald are finally winding down their efforts – but they are hoping that a new band of fundraisers will step in to carry on their work. Mrs Joy Bruce, coordinator of the Hospice Friends group in Crowborough, said: “We have had some wonderful years raising money for such a great cause but reluctantly, we are going to have to stop at the end of the year as some of our committee members are now only able to do the bare minimum of fundraising activities due to age and health constraints.

The small 8-10 bedded unit will deliver nurseled end-of-life care, heavily supported by volunteers. “Having a superb facility like this almost on our doorstep would give a new group of Friends a real impetus,” said Mrs Bruce. Work Begins On Summersales
Summersales was acquired in 2009 by the Council and will provide a new cemetery for Crowborough. Planning permission was granted in 2013 and the 14 acre piece of land has been subject to extensive ecological and geological surveys. A working party has been established to consider the layout of the site which is expected to accommodate both traditional and natural burial areas. Future plans also include a Contemplation building. Summersales is situated on London Road and construction began in September 2015 to create the car park and entrance. Work is now under way to provide an internal road which will lead to the planned Contemplation building.

Public Views Sought on Library Opening Hours Plan Residents are being asked for their views on possible changes to the opening hours of East Sussex Libraries. The County Council is proposing to reduce opening hours across all 24 libraries by around 25 per cent on average, in a bid to reduce library running costs by around £500,000. This would help towards the library service’s target of £2million over the next three years.

With the further changes to opening hours we are proposing in this consultation, we believe we can make the required savings and continue to provide a comprehensive library service across the country. These are very much draft proposals and, while we have worked hard to get the right proposals for each library , we would like to hear if local communities feel that alternative patterns of opening would better suit local needs. We would also welcome alternative proposals that would help us achieve the savings we need to make.

The scheme, scheduled for the weekend of March 4-6th aims to give communities a tidy up ahead of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday. Cllr Greg Rose said “Clean for the Queen is going to be a wonderful weekend of community spirit, where groups or individuals can take pride in their local area by giving it a quick spruce. Whether it’s just the verge outside your house or a larger local public space it’s a prime opportunity to take time out to enjoy the outdoors and keep Crowborough litter free and looking lovely.” A nationwide initiative, the aim is to inspire people to take action and spend a few hours litter-picking to make the places we live more beautiful. Your new Councillors Cllr Alan Penney - North Ward I put myself forward to be an elected member of Crowborough Town Council because I believe that I can play some part in seeing that Crowborough prospers and grows in all ways possible; to serve my neighbours, my neighbourhood and support those organisations that seek to provide help where it is needed. I believe in being active and involved in local organisations that support people, of all ages, and the environment; rather than sit back and pontificate. My aims are to work with other councillors as a team to advance the prosperity and wellbeing of Crowborough and those that live and work in the Town. To protect our rich heritage and to see us move forward so that all of our citizens and commercial enterprises can achieve their full potential. As well as being involved in many of the standing committees I represent Crowborough Town Council on the steering groups of Wealdlink and Fairtrade. Crowborough became a Fairtrade town in 2008 to facilitate the promotion and purchase of products with the Fairtrade Mark, which encourages sustainable development and gives producers a fair deal. Crowborough Town Council actively supports the awareness of the benefits of choosing to buy products bearing the Fairtrade Mark. My family and I moved to Crowborough in 1995 as we saw the town as ideally placed to enable us to be closer to nature but with all the facilities we needed. My wife works part time for a local accountancy company and I have had part time posts which have included working as a site manager at Herne School and at Pine Grove following my ‘first retirement’ from my career in telecommunications. Past voluntary positions have included assistant scout leader 8th Tonbridge (Hildenborough) and Chairman of St John’s Ambulance Combined Cadet Support Committee for Tunbridge Wells. Starting as an engineering apprentice I worked for BT plc involved in Regulatory and Approval Standards, the British Approval Board for Telecommunications, the Office of the Telecommunications Regulator and Swedish Telecommunications. I had the honour of representing the United Kingdom in Europe and North America on Telecommunications Regulation and Standards issues. As well as being a member of Crowborough Community Church I support Hospice in the Weald, The Red Cross and the Kit Wilson Animal Sanctuary.
Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 1, 2016
Your new Councillors Cllr David Neeves - Jarvis Brook I moved to Jarvis Brook in 2000 having lived all my life in Tunbridge Wells. I have been happily married for 19 years and our children attended local schools with the youngest still at Beacon Community College. After serving nine years with the AA and working very tiring shifts, I now drive a lorry for a national, well recognised bakery in Paddock Wood. Although my working day starts at 3.00am I can still devote the time and effort needed to serve my community. I am passionate about any project that aims to improve the local community and am involved in three major community based projects. I am an active responder with Crowborough Community First Responders and I am also a trustee for the charity. We attend 999 calls for the ambulance service if an ambulance is a distance away. We carry a large amount of kit from bandages to a defibrillator and oxygen and provide lifesaving treatment for patients who need it. I have recently been voted secretary of Jarvis Brook Residents Association. This active group seeks to improve the area for residents and have succeeded in many projects. As secretary I will seek to carry on the work started by my predecessor. Another community project that I am involved in is the building of a community centre for Jarvis Brook. As a councillor I feel it is important to be involved in such a vital local service that will benefit, not just the residents of Jarvis Brook, but the whole of Crowborough. I look forward to serving my community and helping to improve both work and personal life in Jarvis Brook.

In the heart of Crowborough High Street, with one of the most spectacular views across the surrounding area, local Independent Financial Advisor Ted Shaw runs his busy office of EJ Financial Ltd with the assistance of Andria Geal. Ted joined Edward Jones Ltd in 2007 following a career change and six months later passed 8 exams, including a complex Stockbroker examination, and became a qualified Stockbroker and Financial Advisor. He has since passed a number of other exams to achieve the Diploma Qualified (Dip FPS) status and is now studying a Chartered Financial Planner qualification. Managing his own firm, Ted is continually striving to deliver the highest quality of service to his clients. This initial meeting is a two-way street where Ted and his potential client are able to establish if they are right for each other in order to achieve the best out of the long-term planning and building of this working relationship. Making plans for a comfortable retirement or making the correct financial decisions at each stage in your life is a serious business and not one Ted takes lightly when it comes to giving his clients the right advice. “I always enjoy our meetings, and feel well informed on the subject discussed. No flannel, straight to the point.” A resident of Crowborough himself, for 20 years, Ted loves running his business from his home town. “Crowborough is a safe town for everyone and my children were all schooled in the area” said Ted. He enjoys the good transport links via road or train to London and the rest of the South East which connects him to his clients. Ted is very active in the local community, enjoying some of the sporting activities available and is a member of Beacon Golf Club, the Church Road Squash & Tennis Club and The Constitutional Club. March/April 2016  The Crowborough Directory
Latest news With a new year comes the distribution of the updated Chamber Members Directory. The A5 booklet, which is distributed to 9,000 households in the area, provides the contact information for all Chamber members and is a handy reference for members of the public who are looking to use the services of our members. It is one of a number of benefits of Chamber Membership and its distribution always attracts new members. Copies are also available from Waitrose for a limited time and from Chamber events throughout the year.
The Chamber was delighted to welcome Gary Williams of Beacon Academy to speak to members at our January meeting. Gary, who is the Sixth Form Pastoral Manager & Careers Advisor, highlighted the need for apprenticeships now that students must remain in education or training until the age of 18. The presentation helped dispel some misconceptions concerning what is involved in offering an apprenticeship and gave a number of members more confidence in pursuing the possibility of being able to offer a young person a training opportunity. The Chamber looks forward to continuing its relationship with Beacon in the coming year and beyond in order to prepare young people for a future in work. The Chamber has invited Wealden MP Nusrat Ghani to present to the Chamber at our AGM in March. As well addressing the Chamber and taking questions on the her first year in office and local issues Ms Ghani will also be announcing the winners of this year’s Chamber awards. If you would like to find out more about the Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce, its aims and advantages of membership please visit our website:

The Crowborough Directory March/April 2016
We are almost in March, where did January and February go? I wonder how many readers managed to keep to their New Year Resolutions? Mine were to lose ¾ of a stone and complete Dry January (no alcohol). Fortunately I managed both which I’m very pleased about! In a professional capacity, I worked as a Barristers’ Clerk in London for over 20 years which involved managing the casework of Barristers (specialist lawyers). Traditionally the work of Barristers came via solicitors but the rules changed several years ago to allow Barristers to accept work directly from clients, i.e. from members of the public and businesses who need legal advice and/or court representation, instead of having to have a solicitor in the middle. This is the reason I formed my own business, The Barrister Broker, nearly three years ago, to help people deal with their legal issues as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible by facilitating Barristers to help them.
The Benefits
Part of my value is that I remove the ‘guesswork’ to choosing the right lawyer for your needs. I provide highly experienced Barristers from my panel - people who I regularly work with (sometimes over many years) who have proven track records and the necessary skills and experience to help you.
1. L egal expertise - A Barrister has specialist knowledge in his or her legal field, i.e. divorce law, employment law, road traffic law, etc. Going directly to a ‘specialist’ will save you time, money and hassle in the long term. 2. Cost - A Barrister will cost you less overall than a solicitor - a result of much lower operating costs, the effect of fixed fees and flexible working.
So if you are going through a divorce and fear you may not get your rightful share of the family assets or you’re seeking custody or contact with your children, DON’T ‘guess’ when it comes to using a lawyer do yourself a big favour and speak to me. My number is 01732 866 562.
3. F ixed fees - knowing how much the cost will be BEFORE agreeing to have the work done is a really important factor that my clients love because it gives them peace of mind and no nasty surprise bills after the work has been done. Choosing the ‘right’ lawyer for your needs is incredibly important. People often go to a lawyer with NO prior knowledge of the quality of that person’s work assuming they will be in safe hands simply because that person is a lawyer. I have over 25 years in the legal industry so trust me when I say that that sort of assumption is incredibly risky. Lottery springs to mind!
