Online Reading Challenges

Did you know that reading to your child is the single most important way to help children get ready to read? Formal education does not typically start until ages 4 -5 , and parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the critical early years. Taking part in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages bonding, promotes the development of early literacy skills and helps give kids the tools they need to succeed in school. Read 1,000 different books or read the same book 1,000 times. Register your child for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge in Beanstack or the Beanstack App and log your child’s reading to earn badges. Earn your 1000 Books badge and receive a prize from your local library. Visit lclibrary.ca/ beanstack on information on how to register for this challenge.

Active Living Collection
Did you know a library card gets you access to items you can use to explore the outdoors this winter? In partnership with Lambton Public Health, Lambton County Library provides free access to borrowing snowshoes, GPS units, walking poles and pedometers that can be used in tandem with other items like an Ontario Parks Pass to help you explore outdoors easily!
Snowshoes
Snowshoes are available for a 7-day loan period. You can place holds on snowshoes through the Library’s online catalogue and they will be delivered to your local library. Please note that only four pairs of snowshoes can be borrowed per library card. Adult sizes and kids’ sizes are available.

Pedometers
Pedometers are devices that you wear to measure the distance traveled on foot by recording the number of steps being taken. Pedometers have proven to be successful in motivating people to walk more. Pedometers are available for a 21-day loan period.
GPS Devices
GPS (Global Positioning Systems) are used to track your current location. GPS devices can be used to go geocaching. Geocaching is an activity that uses GPS coordinates to lead people on a type of treasure hunt. Containers (or caches) are hidden at specific coordinate locations all over the world, including Lambton County. GPS Devices are available at your local library for a 21-day loan period. Geocaching is a fun way to increase physical activity levels, and to explore local trails.
Walking Poles
Walking poles may be used year round to help activate muscles in your upper body as well as the lower body when walking for an effective overall workout. Adjustable walking poles are available in two sizes for a 7-day loan.
Get your library card and take your family on an adventure this holiday season!
