COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND THE ROLE OF HALL STAFF AND COMMUNITY COUNCIL There are many ways for residents to get involved in their community and people to help them along the way. This section of the guide will cover an introduction to Housing and Residence Life’s mission and goals in working with residents, community involvement, and the role of staff members in each community. Housing and Residence Life not only provides housing for students, but also opportunities or students to be engaged in their community and develop as individuals. Hall staff use intentional programming efforts, student outreach, and connections to critical resources and educational information to make each community welcoming and vibrant. We focus on developing a student’s sense of self, success skills, fostering relationships and community, and integrating the overlapping areas of all three.

RESIDENT ASSISTANTS In apartment communities, the role of the Resident Assistant, or RA, is similar to the role of an RA in first year communities. RAs:

Interact with residents and guests in the community Help residents effectively work through conflict with others Serve on an on-call rotation, addressing policy violations and safety concerns in the halls Assist with desk operations, facility concerns, and other administrative pieces. Facilitate programs and events in the community: RAs in apartment communities host programs geared towards the interests and needs of each specific community. RAs will host small and large community programs, centered around social relationships, understanding oneself, and building success skills. Throughout the course of the year, RAs will hold intentional conversations with their residents regarding topics that are relevant to residents’ lives. RAs reach out to their residents regularly; however, we encourage residents to seek out interactions with their RAs as well.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL Each community has a community council that acts as the voice of residents living within the community. Community Council provides leadership opportunities, social and educational programming, and is a sounding board for residential concerns. If you are interested in getting involved with your Community Council, please contact your Residence Hall Director or RA.

RESIDENT ASSISTANTS Interact with residents and guests in the community, facilitate programs and events in the community, help residents effectively work through conflicts, serve on an on-call rotation, addressing policy violations and safety concerns in the halls, assist with desk operations, facility concerns, and other administrative tasks.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTS AND FULL-TIME RESIDENCE HALL DIRECTORS Live-in staff members responsible for the management and oversight of a residential community as well as the living environment of the residence hall through staff supervision, student development, resident outreach, community building, conduct hearing adjudication, facilities management, and serves in an on-call rotation.

DESK ASSISTANTS Provide customer service at the front desk, such as managing resources, packages, and serve as a resource to residents and guests. These returning students are very familiar with NAU and can help connect students with campus resources or help to find answers to questions. If you are interested in applying to be a “DA”, please speak with your RHD.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PEER ADVISOR Assists with the overall support of NAU’s on-campus international student population, specifically those students residing outside of International House. If you are an international student who is looking to become more connected, or has a question about navigating the university system, please consider contacting the “ISPA”. LIVING WITH OTHERS

Living with others is an essential part of personal and interpersonal development. Living in an apartment community provides the optimal setting to develop such skills.

ROOMMATE AGREEMENTS

These agreements help to set up boundaries and expectations between apartmentmates. The earlier residents complete their agreement, the easier the transition into apartment living will be. Roommate Agreements are not binding contracts. They can be revisited at any time and staff can assist in facilitating discussions as needed. In completing this document, pay particular attention to:

Guest visitation (please refer to the Standards of Residence policy 6.0 regarding Visitors and Guests). Designated individual vs shared areas in the apartment (i.e. kitchen cabinets, shelves in the refrigerator/pantry/ bathroom). Daily living routines (i.e. sleep patterns, study hours, apartment space usage) Shared cleaning routines (residents are responsible for cleaning and maintaining their apartments). There is no requirement for residents to set up a cleaning task-list for the apartment, though it is encouraged. Doing so will allow for a clearer division of apartment cleaning and create joint responsibility of the space. Examples of shared tasks: cleaning the kitchen (fridge, stove top, sink), dishes, bathroom cleaning, vacuuming shared spaces, taking out the trash, etc. Prompting questions for expectations on cleanliness: What does “clean” mean to you? How often will you clean your space? Does that mean your bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom?

How will you divide up the work for cleaning the apartment? How will dishes in the sink and dishwasher be handled; when it is full, a certain day of the week, one person loads and another empties? Shared apartment supplies and costs to consider: Residents are encouraged to create general guidelines for purchasing items in the apartment. Plans on who will purchase commonly used items (i.e broom, vacuum, paper towels, toilet paper, hand and dish soap, shampoo, body wash, etc.) for the apartment are recommended. Common practices include rotating who purchases the item, assigning individuals the responsibility of purchasing specific items, or through group shopping trips and splitting shared costs. Residents may also choose not to share certain items. It’s important to decide where those items are stored and to communicate expectations.

FACILITIES AND AMENITIES While living in any apartment community, residents are provided with support and resources to ensure that their living environments remain safe and comfortable. This section will cover information about facilities support services and some of the amenities offered in each community.

Jacks Debit Express (JDE)

In communities that have centralized laundry facilities, residents must put JDE on their JacksCards in order to do laundry. JDE can be replenished online at nau.edu/jackscard. JDE can also be replenished by phone at 928-523-1905, in person at the JacksCard Office, PHIL stations in the Union, HLC, and DuB (cash only), or where students manage JDE, Dining, and Meal Plan accounts.

If residents are experiencing a facilities-related issue, we ask that they submit a work request via “FIXED”, by calling 928-523-4933. If residents have an emergency request after-hours or on weekends (power outage, flood, etc.), contact FIXED and please inform the RA On-Call for immediate assistance. Examples of when to call FIXED: trouble locking/unlocking door, window screen bent/broken, sink leaking, power outlet not working, heat not working, stove/ oven not turning on, refrigerator stops working. After submitting a work request, residents are encouraged to inform their RA of the issue and the request so they can follow-up appropriately. If residents need assistance with IT (technology) issues, they can call the Student Technology Center at 928-523-9294.

Laundry Services

In-Hall Desk Resources

Each residence hall has resources available at the front desk for resident use. This includes entertainment, resources for apartment tasks such as cooking, and various other supports to residents.

Laundry services are provided in each apartment community. Some communities have central laundry rooms located in the complex while others provide washers and dryers in individual apartment units. Peak hours for central laundry rooms are: Weekdays (Mon-Fri) from 5:00pm to 10:00pm Weekends (Sat-Sun) from 10:00am-10:00pm The laundry room in South Village has assistance animal friendly and ADA accessible machines available for resident use.

Below is an example of a cleaning task-list for your apartment. When discussing cleaning during your shared space agreement, think about how you will communicate with one another regarding cleaning expectations, why cleaning is important, (physical and emotional health, etc.), how the time and costs of shared items or cleaning products will be shared, and what is most important to each other when it comes to standards of cleanliness.

CHECKING OUT OF YOUR APARTMENT AND APARTMENT CHECKS

If residents are checking out prior to the end of the semester, they will need to work with their RA and RHD to ensure they are completing appropriate procedures. Check out steps include:

Fill out a Petition to Terminate Housing Contract form, available at Housing and Residence Life Office (North Hall, bldg. #5), your community’s front desk, or online at: nau.edu/residence-life/apply-for-housing/contract-terms/ Pack belongings and clean personal and shared spaces. Schedule a time to complete a walk through with an RA, once all of the resident’s belongings are out of the space. This includes checking the room inventory that was filled out at the beginning of the semester/year. Return any items checked out from the front desk. Hand in keys and get checked out of the on-line system by an RA. Prior to the end of each semester, Housing and Residence Life staff will conduct apartment walk-throughs. During these walk-throughs, staff will enter apartments to check the general cleanliness and maintenance of all spaces. Staff will leave information pertaining to what needs to be cleaned for the residents prior to move-out. Residents will be notified via email and during closing floor meetings about when walk-throughs will occur.

CLEANING AND CARE Cabinets: Around food preparation areas, cabinet exteriors should be wiped down weekly with oil base cleaners to avoid thick grease build up near food preparation areas. The insides of the cabinets should be wiped out to avoid dust and food spills that may attract insects. Carpeting: All residents are expected to properly and regularly use a vacuum in the apartment. If a resident does not have a vacuum, there is one available at the community front desk. The carpeted floors should be vacuumed at least once a week to avoid excessive wear and tear. Spills should be immediately cleaned up. To avoid iron burns, never iron on the floor. Dishwasher: Always rinse dishes thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher. Make sure that the dial is lined up with “START” when beginning the wash cycle. Never use industrial-grade (i.e. caustic cleaners containing sodium hydroxide etc.) in the dishwasher. To keep the dishwasher clean inside, wipe down the sides and occasionally run the wash and rinse cycles while the dishwasher is empty. Garbage/Recycling: All garbage and recycling should be bagged and put directly into the appropriate dumpster (not around it). Storing garbage in the apartment or on balconies/ walkways is not permitted. A charge to the student account will be assessed for each incident of garbage not being disposed of properly. Glass collection for recycling is available at the south end of the P62B (“South Commuter”) parking lot. Additional items (batteries, toner cartridges, etc.) may be recycled at your community front desk. Garbage Disposal Unit: To insure that the disposal unit is kept in clean and good operating condition run cold water while grinding food wastes. Turn off the disposal and allow cold water to continue running for approximately 30 seconds after all food wastes have passed through the machine.

What can be put in the garbage disposal? Small amounts of food waste, cut up and/or small pieces can be ground up easily.

What cannot be put in the garbage disposal? Non-food items (paper, string, diapers, flower stems, etc.), bones, coffee grounds, hard to chop items (peach pits, melon rind, etc.), large chunks of vegetables (corn husks, broccoli stalks, etc.), or GREASE. Pour grease and cooking fat into a container, refrigerate until solid, and dispose in the dumpster. Do not put grease in the garbage disposal. If the disposal unit develops an odor, grinding lemon or orange peels will help as well as pulling out the rubber ring and washing the underside of it. If the garbage disposal is not working: DO NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL THE WALL SWITCH IS TURNED OFF! After the switch has been turned off, call FIXED to place a work order. If the disposal will not run and makes a humming noise when on, there is the possibility of having tripped the safety thermal switch by running very hot water into the disposal or overloading it. Allow the disposal to cool. Press the RED RESET BUTTON located on the bottom of the machine, then turn on the wall switch to activate the disposal while running cold water in the sink.

Refrigerators: To preserve the life of the refrigerator it should be wiped out often, especially the gasket (rubber seal around the doors) to keep it clean. Pulling the refrigerator away from the wall once per semester is advised to clean the floor underneath as well as vacuuming the coils to make sure that the refrigerator runs more efficiently. Once the refrigerator has been moved, allow 30 minutes for the refrigerant to settle before reporting that it does not work. Do not over stuff your freezer blocking vent fan. Blocking the vent fan can cause lower temperatures in the refrigerator portion. Tiles: The tile floors should be swept daily and mopped weekly to avoid wear and tear. Toilets: DO NOT FLUSH the following: feminine hygiene products, personal sanitary wipes, disposable diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, napkins, serviettes, cotton swabs, dental floss, or disposable toilet wand pads. If the toilet becomes clogged call FIXED to place a work order. If it is determined by NAU staff that a plumbing blockage in an apartment is due to the resident flushing foreign objects, including, but not limited to the items listed above, the University reserves the right to charge the resident’s student account for the cost of clearing the blockage, including all parts and labor. Walls: The apartment contract prohibits nails from being used in the walls. Please use blue painter’s tape or removable hooks (i.e. 3M) that leave no marks. Wallpaper borders are prohibited. Residents are expected to clean the walls accordingly with the appropriate cleaners regularly to avoid charges at the end of their stay. Magic Erasers (available at most stores) work very well to remove marks from white walls. Painting and/or drywall repair by residents is prohibited in all the apartments on campus and will result in charges being applied to the resident’s student account. Washer/Dryer: For best laundry results, do not overload either the washer or dryer. Wipe down the outside of the washer and dryer to prevent soap and dirt build up. Make sure to clean out the lint trap filter before each dryer load to prevent lint build up which can lead to a fire. Place lint in a trash receptacle located away from the hot water heater to prevent fires.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE I-House, located in Campus Heights, is a great way to meet both international and American students. FAMILY HOUSING Family Housing (located in South Village): Full-time students who are (or will be) married, or have legal custody of one or more children may apply for this close-knit community. More information can be found at: nau.edu/ Residence-Life/HousingOptions/Family-Housing

GENDER INCLUSIVE HOUSING (GIH) GIH, located in Raymond Hall, allows students to live together regardless of biological sex or gender identity. This supportive space continues to grow and thrive. More information can be found at: nau.edu/gih

POLICIES AND SAFETY In this section we will review some policies and procedures that are important to be aware of as students and residents at NAU. As this guide does not cover all policies and procedures, please know that it will be each resident’s responsibility to review NAU’s Standards of Residence and Student Code of Conduct in their entirety at nau. edu/Residence-Life/Life-on-Campus/RulesRegulations/

Alcohol

Alcohol is permitted in all apartment communities at NAU for those who are legally of age to consume or possess it.

If residents are under 21 years of age, they may not possess, consume, be in the presence of alcohol, or possess alcohol beverage containers in university housing. If residents are of legal drinking age, they may possess or consume alcohol only in the presence of others of legal drinking age, including assigned roommates. If residents of legal drinking age are living with residents who are not of legal drinking age, the residents of legal drinking age must store their alcohol and alcohol containers outside of plain view and in their bedroom or section of the bedroom (whichever applies). Residents of legal drinking age may only consume their alcohol if their roommates who are under 21 years of age are not present.

Smoking and Tobacco-Free Buildings and Campus

All NAU residential communities are smoke and tobacco-free buildings. Smoking, and the use of chewing tobacco, hookah, vapor pens, e-cigarettes, and other similar devices are not permitted inside any residential building.

Marijuana and Other Drugs

The possession, presence, use, sale, manufacture, cultivation, or provision of any type of illegal drug (barbiturates, opiates, marijuana, amphetamines, hallucinogens, etc.), or aiding in the use of such are not permitted in university housing. This includes the possession and use of medical marijuana.

Weapons Weapons and Explosives: Possession, use, or sale of any incendiary, explosive, or destructive device or any firearm on the university campus and within university housing is not permitted. At no time will live ammunition of any type be permitted in or on university premises. Discharging and Brandishing Weapons: The firing or brandishing of any type of firearm, bow and arrow, slingshot, or any other weapon on campus is prohibited and may result in immediate eviction from university housing.

Prohibited Items Personal refrigerators, halogen lamps, hot plates, electric skillets, toasters, toaster ovens, air conditioners, electric/space heaters, lofts, water beds, George Foreman grills, exposed coil cooking devices, high wattage appliances, wireless routers, weapons, hover-boards, pets, cinder blocks, kerosene heaters, candles, incense, scent pot burners, other fire hazards are not permitted.

Vacate on Alarm

A resident must promptly vacate any residential facility when a fire alarm is sounded.

Fire

In the event of fire, sound the nearest fire alarm, vacate the building, and contact Housing and Residence Life staff or NAUPD. Be aware of the fire escape plans in your buildings.

Residents are advised that the university campus as a whole has been designated smoke and tobacco-free as of July 1, 2016. Refer to nau.edu/tobacco-free for information. 14


POLICIES AND SAFETY CONT... Tampering with Alarms

A resident may not tamper with, disable, or obstruct any fire-safety equipment, including smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and cases, fire sprinklers and associated plumbing, fire hose connections.

Noise

Excessive noise or behavior that disturbs others within university housing is not permitted. Residents violating this policy may face disciplinary action.

Animals Pets are not permitted in university housing, either on a temporary or permanent basis. An exception can be made for: Fish in reasonable numbers and in appropriate containers (5 gallons maximum). Service animals as defined by law. Assistance animals if determined by the university to be a reasonable accommodation for an individual with a disability. Please see nau. edu/disability-resources for further information. These must be approved by the university before bringing them into university housing. Animals being utilized for academic research are not allowed in university housing.

Guest Policies

Though residents are allowed to have guests, they cannot number more than 6 at one time. Residents are also responsible for their guests’ behavior and will be held accountable should they violate university or housing policy.

Window Screens

Window screens may not be removed.

Renters’ Insurance

It is highly recommended that residents purchase renters’ insurance while living in university housing. Many students find that they are covered under their parents’ policies, but it is important to check on this, or to purchase supplemental coverage.

Minimum “quiet hours” are established from 10 p.m. – 8 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 12 a.m. – 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, unless otherwise designated by the residential community. Quiet hours will be modified to support university activities, such as reading week and finals week. All other hours are designated as “courtesy hours” and residents are expected to demonstrate consideration for their neighbors at all times.

Cohabitation Cohabitation is prohibited. This is when a person who is not assigned to a particular residence hall room or apartment uses that room or apartment as if they were living there. When a guest’s continual presence hinders other residents’ ability to study, sleep, and/or occupy their room, it will be considered a violation of this policy. Examples of cohabitation may include, but are not limited to: Accessing the room or apartment while the assigned occupants are not present. Utilizing a key to enter a room or apartment to which one is not assigned. Storing clothing and other personal belongings in the room or apartment. Sleeping overnight in the room or apartment on a regular basis. Using the bathroom or shower facilities as if they lived in that room/ apartment.


POLICIES AND SAFETY CONT... Locking Doors and Windows Residents should ensure that all doors and windows are locked in their absence for their safety as well as for the protection of their personal belongings. If belongings are lost, stolen or damaged, please contact hall staff and NAUPD as soon as possible. Housing and Residence Life is not liable for missing or stolen items.

Keys and Cost

In apartment communities, at check-in, residents receive a set of keys that may include; one each for their front door, bedroom door, and mailbox. Charges may apply if any or all of those keys are lost, to cover the replacement of the lock(s) and cutting of new keys. This depends on the type of key to be replaced and the location of the corresponding lock:
