Reflecting on Rhythms and Sabbath Observance Prepared by Hector Pagan

Reflections • Drums are instruments that create rhythms. Rhythms are the foundation of artistic musical expressions. But what could we learn about the meaning of rhythms?

• How do we create a life-rhythm? (Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest (Exodus 34: 21).

Life-Rhythms • Are there unconscious cognitive rhythms, pace rhythms, or relational rhythms that affect the ways in which we interact with the physical and spiritual reality?

- "The Sabbath is not for the sake of the weekdays; the weekdays are for the sake of Sabbath. It is not an interlude, but the climax of living.“ (Heschel, 1979).

Rhythms and the Sabbath: Discussion • How instrumental rhythms serve as a reflection of the rhythms of our daily lives?

• Could the practice or observance of the Sabbath affect our life-rhythms?

• How can the Sabbath change our own rhythm?
