DIRECTOR’S WELCOME
MAYOR’S WELCOME
2017 marks a significant milestone, celebrating 30 years of Black History Month in the UK. This has provided an opportunity to bring together another fantastic programme of projects and events, giving voice to the often untold Black British history and the contribution of the African and African Caribbean people across the diaspora.
Leicester is a city with so much to be proud of – including the enormous contribution that our diverse communities have made to city life.
Over the course of the last year many of those reading this brochure will have become familiar with the project Lost Legends: 30 Years of Black History Month, that has been researching and gathering memories, stories and memorabilia of Leicester’s African Caribbean community against the backdrop of social and political change, nationally and internationally. Lost Legends has resulted in an exhibition which will run throughout October at Newarke Houses Museum and Gardens, alongside a film, publication and online media archive, which tell a story of the African and African Caribbean communities’ place in making and shaping history and ensuring that this is recorded as a legacy of their heritage.
We’re a city which quite rightly has a reputation for welcoming people of all backgrounds, with a rich shared history and culture as a result.
Other key events include a restaging of Ragamuffin, Amani Napthali’s seminal play which still feels as current today as it did almost 30 years ago, in light of current events. Alongside this we have the chance to see many pieces of new theatre, such as Rachael Young’s Nightclubbing, Mellow Baku and Marcus Joseph’s Paradigm Rhymes: Beyond the Dome, and Metro-Boulet-Dodo’s Empire Soliders. Many of the artists in the programme Serendipity have had the pleasure of mentoring through BHM Live, and this year we are thrilled to be able to present a showcase of work by Alleyene Dance, Chessboard Society, Gerrard Martin Dance and Humanhood. 2017 has also marked the 100th birthdays of several jazz legends, from Thelonious Monk to Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Leicester’s Writers Showcase lead the tributes with Ella @ 100, and New Walk Museum is celebrating with a season of jazz music. BHM Film Fest, in partnership with University of Leicester and Phoenix Cinema, returns with a programme featuring landmark films such as Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask, Looking for Langston, Darker Side of Black and The Stuart Hall Project, alongside films which bring the voices of Black women to the fore, with Maya Angelou: Still I Rise and Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights.
2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of Black History Month in the UK and, here in Leicester, we have taken this opportunity to recognise the achievements and contributions of Leicester’s African and African Caribbean community particularly over the last three decades. In my various terms of office over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to witness first-hand the power and commitment of Leicester’s communities to improve life for all who live here. I am delighted that this year’s Black History Month provides a chance for all of Leicester’s communities to come together and to recognise and celebrate these contributions through the various events. I would like to wish the very best to all of those who have contributed in some way to Black History Month, I hope you enjoy this year’s programme.
On behalf of Serendipity I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of contributing and supporting both Lost Legends and Black History Month this year and in the last 30 years. This October is a chance to celebrate an important legacy that you have been a part of.

Extracts from Hughes’s poetry are interwoven with archival footage, fantasy sequences, and an imagined love story. The result is a beautiful and ultimately celebratory piece.
