On behalf of organisers from across Leicester, we are delighted to present this rich programme of exhibitions, films, poetry, performance, theatre, music and talks, representing the best of Black arts and heritage.
This year, the theme for Black History Month Leicester is Black Women: Invisible Power, recognising the leadership of Black Women throughout history. 2024 marks a number of significant anniversaries: 85 years since Evelyn Dove’s rise to fame as the first Black singer to feature on BBC Radio; 65 years since Claudia Jones established the first UK Caribbean carnival; in London and 40 years since Tessa Sanderson became the first Black British woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Leicester’s Black History Month provides a unique opportunity to recognise the significant positive change that Black women have made across a diverse range of sectors including activism, arts, education, politics, science and technology. It also connects to the national theme Reclaiming Narratives, rectifying the narratives of Black history and culture.
There are many events exploring this year’s theme. We launch with 100 Black Women Who Have Made A Mark, an exhibition at Leicester Gallery, a podcast series and publication featuring the portraits and stories of 100 Black women with connections to Britain and Ireland. There is also a wide range of films screening at Phoenix, from a spotlight on Black British director Ngozi Onwurah and a return to the seminal film Dancehall Queen. The popular Leicester Women’s Poetry Competition returns for another year alongside a celebration of Caribbean Woman: A Tribute Through Poetry, Words and Song.
2024 also provides an opportunity to attend a wide range of talks from an exclusive interview with Julian Marley through to Criminal Exploitation: How Systems Fail Britain’s Black Children. Theatre and performance also shine a spotlight on untold stories, including Going for Gold, exploring the true story of boxer Frankie Lucas. There are also a wide range of exhibitions at venues across the city exploring hidden histories and award-winning artists.
Black History Month provides a focus for Black history to take centre stage within a full yearround programme of activities. Updates and additions to this programme will be available online via the Serendipity website. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to and has supported Black History Month Leicester 2024. We hope you enjoy everything on offer throughout the month and continue to support projects led by the African and African Caribbean community in Leicester throughout the year.
Pawlet Brookes MBE CEO and Artistic Director Serendipity Institute for
Black Arts and Heritage
Black History Month is a significant point within Leicester’s rich cultural calendar and I am delighted to see the wealth of events for all to engage with this October.
This year in particular we are exploring the theme of Black Women: Invisible Power and Reclaiming Narratives. As a whole, the programme serves to remind us to celebrate the significant contribution that African and African Caribbean communities have made to Leicester, both historically and in the present day.
It is encouraging to see the many events recognising those who have worked tirelessly to make a positive change within our diverse communities, from internationally acclaimed trailblazers through to local community activists.
I would like to wish the very best to those who have contributed towards Black History Month this year. My thanks go to Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage for coordinating this year’s programme and to the many event organisers, leaders and volunteers who make Black History Month in Leicester possible.
