he is one of the most acclaimed voices in the world of music. We have been hooked ever since we first heard her in 2001, and have followed her ever since. Because, you see, no one has revolutionised soul music like Alicia, a singer, composer, pianist and music producer. Now, all are welcome to watch her shine on stage when her globe-trotting The Freedom Tour makes its only Spanish stop on June 2, in Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi. The singer will take the opportunity to present her latest album, The Element of Freedom. Already number one on Itunes, her latest record once again attests to her rapid and well-deserved ascent.

An unstoppable career Alicia Keys is one of the few singers with12 Grammy Awards and over 30 million records sold world-wide under her belt, lest we forget her five American Music Awards, nine ASCAP and 16 Billboard Awards. The artist, who is yet to turn 30, found success early on. Her debut album, Songs in A Minor, released in 2001, brought home five Grammy Awards, including the year’s best song for “Falling”, an impressive ballad she performed behind her trusty piano. Not to be outdone, her 2007 release As I Am climbed to number 1 in the charts, selling over three-million copies across the globe. Here in Spain, it went platinum, with over 60,000 records sold. In addition to album work, Alicia Keys also collaborated with White Stripes’ front man Jack White on the main theme for the last James Bond film Quantum of Solace. She has also graced the movie screen on more than one occasion, appearing in the films Smoking Aces alongside Ben Affleck and Andy García, The Nanny Diaries, in which she shared camera time with Scarlett Johansson, and The Secret Life of Bees with Jennifer Hudson. Alicia is active in the festival circuit and all manner of charity events. Working alongside U2 lead-singer Bono, she recorded a duet to help the Aids relief organisation Keep a Child Alive, for whom Keys is a spokeswoman. The organisation will receive proceeds from this project to help bring HIV treatment medicines to the poorest countries in Africa. The release of The Element of Freedom comes at one of the sweetest points in her career, a time of enviable solidity and maturity. This past year has seen Keys take larger strides towards Spanish-speaking audiences, thanks to her collaboration with Alejandro Sanz and their catchy duet “Looking for Paradise”.

The Element of Freedom, her fifth studio album This latest recording effort constitutes Alicia’s fifth studio album. The Element of Freedom was released last December and can be found in Spain in its most complete CD+DVD edition. As the title indicates, this record is laden with moving songs for free spirits. Here, Alicia belts out ballads with her elegant, velvety voice and performs other faster-paced tracks, thus creating a complete, mature work littered with big-name collaborations. She herself confirms this feeling of freedom, “For the first time in my recording career, I feel I’ve finally found the key, and that is to allow yourself to be free”. Keys took a completely different approach to this album, refusing to confine herself to a recording studio, “or allowing myself to be negatively affected by deadlines, which can hinder any creative spirit. I’ve found a freedom and flow that I try to implement everyday”. The Element of Freedom features a host of different styles, apparent in the reggae-infused “Love Is My Disease” and the 80s funk-tinged sound of “This Bed”. Listeners will be hardpressed not to succumb to tracks like “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” and the first single “Doesn’t Mean Anything”, along with the immaculate version of “Empire State of Mind (Part II) (Broken Down)”. Outstanding collaborations include the duet with Beyoncé, “Put It in a Love Song”, and “Unthinkable (I’m Ready)”, which features choruses by Drake. This new album was produced by Alicia herself, alongside long-time collaborator Kerry
“Krucial” Brothers, Jeff Bhasker, Swizz Beatz and Noah “40” Shebib. The edition of the album released here in Spain is an authentic luxury, as it comes with a DVD featuring intimate live recordings of three of the record’s most representative songs, along with the hit “No One” and the music video for “Doesn’t Mean Anything”.
