captain was in charge of giving the league championship to Barça’s fans in the citizen’s derby against Espanyol and Puyol had the privilege of raising the European Cup in the Saint-Dennis Stadium in Paris. At the end of the next season, 2006-2007, he had an injury that prevented him from playing until la Liga (the Spanish League competition) 2007-2008, in which he ultimately played 30 games. In the historical milestone of the triple crown, the “Spanish League, King’s Cup, and Champions League” during the 2008-2009 season, Carles Puyol proved himself to be the most versatile defensive member of Barça. Josep Guardiola had him play as right back, left and centre, making him into the perfect wildcard. In the 2010 season Puyol and his teammates, under the leadership of “Pep” Guardiola, were able to bring together a jubilant Barcelona in las Canaletas in Plaza Cataluña to celebrate another League title. Carles Puyol stands out for his great physical strength, discipline, and problem solving skills on the playing field. A perfect example of a team player, he always opts for the good of the team over personal glory. His versatility is what allows him to play left back as well, while his physical power makes him a force to be reckoned with in aerial play. He does not shy away from attacking and when presented with the opportunity, he attempts to add to offensive play, especially in situations with a stopped ball. Above all else, Carles Puyol is a model player in the locker room due to his exceptional character, leadership ability, and full understanding of what it means to dress and feel the colors of the Barça jerssey - a club with which he identi-

fies completely. In his MySpace account, Puyol states that “Discipline is of the utmost importance for me”. From this philosophy, stems his untiring ability to fight, physical strength and team spirit. Carles Puyol is a fixture of the Spanish national team. With this team, he has participated in the World Cups of 2002 and 2006 and in the European Cups of 2004 and 2008. In the last European Cup, he was a crucial part of Spain’s victory. Now, he is preparing to don the Spanish uniform for the World Cup in South Africa that will begin June 11, 2010. Regarding this, the player declared “I do not know if we will be champions or not, but what is clear is that we will go to South Africa with the hope of achieving something important and trying to go far. That is our goal.” After the World Cup, we hope to find him with the satisfaction of having left everything on the field and returning to dress in azulgrana, the uniform that he loves and that makes us so proud. e examine the foray of Carles Puyol, Barça captain, into the world of futbol from the beginning of his career to his role in the upcoming 2010 South Africa World Cup. It has been a road marked by leadership, discipline, and a passion for football. Carles Puyol Saforcada took his first steps to becoming a football player on the local team of his hometown, La Pobla de Segur, en Lleida. Over the years, he showed that he was full of potential and in the 1995-1996 season he joined the Barça youth football team. His talent meant that he quickly became one of the fundamental pieces for Barça B and in 1999 he debuted with the first team, making his dream a reality. “Puyol” as he is affectionately called, raised the interest of Luis Van Gaal, who put his faith in Puyol for the encounter against Valladolid. From that point forward, the footballer became an integral part of the strategy of the Dutch coach until his eventual conversion to into a point of reference for Barça’s right wing. Thanks to his eagerness to imrove, coupled with his strong work ethic, Puyol adapted to the centre position where he became a fixture of the Barça lineup. In the 2003-2004 season, in addition to being the third team captain, he was one of the key elements in the success of the team’s second place finish. Puyol won his first title with Barça during the 2004-2005 season. In addition to being an essential part of the backbone of Rijkaard´s team, the moment was made even sweeter when , the team’s captains granted him the honour of raising the Champion’s League trophy. In the 2005-2006 season, Puyol repeated the scenario from the previous season. The
