hakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born 33 years ago in Barranquilla, Colombia. And from that day forth, her life has been intimately connected with the world of music and show business. She began writing and performing her own songs very early on and released her first album “Magia” at the tender age of 14. It was the beginning of a career that has been, while short, intense, with 8 records under her belt; albums which, on multiple occasions, have lifted her to the summit of international music charts. Her development as a singer has mirrored her changes in look to which she has us accustomed. Hair colour, style, music; chameleonic in each and every one of her many facets. No two records sound alike. Acutely distinct collaborations, such as in “La tortura” with Alejandro Sanz, her latest music video for “Gitana”, which features tennis player Rafael Nadal, and her duet with Beyoncé in “Beautiful Liar”, are a clear example of the most international Colombian’s character. Albeit in English or Spanish, the entire planet is dancing to her beat. It was her 1998 release ¿Dónde están los ladrones? that launched her to international stardom. The record sold over 7 million copies and carried her name to places like Canada, France and Switzerland. Yet perhaps most importantly, it also brought her fame in the United States, one of the planet’s most important markets, where she sold over one million copies alone. With the English speaking world wrapped securely around her finger, she seized the chance to include some tracks in English on her follow-up effort Laundry Service. Despite certain critics regarding the adaptation of her songs, the numbers speak for themselves: 13 million copies sold world-wide. Australia had now discovered the name Shakira. Setting aside the over 100 awards the singer has received for her artistic efforts, she has also garnered recognition thanks to her more humane side. She was awarded the Social Justice for Peace Medal by the United Nations in recognition of her work setting up the Foundation “Pies descalzos” (bare feet). She is also
one of UNICEF’S Goodwill Ambassadors and a founding member of the Alas (wings) Foundation, which promotes the implementation of public policies that help children across Latin America and the Caribbean. Each one of her actions serves to substantiate the singer’s figure as one of the most charitable and conscientious artists out there; someone who uses their fame and image to do good. She has been dating Antonio de la Rúa, son of former President Fernando de la Rúa, since 2000. While the couple remain childless, Shakira has confirmed, on more than one occasion, her desire to become a mother. Touring and her crowded schedule, nonetheless, do not afford her much time to rest. Discrete in their private life, distrustful of the outside world, despite her and his fame, they have always tried to keep away from the tabloid’s roaming eye, even if the cameras have caught them more than once. Advertising work has also followed her throughout her professional career, allowing brands like Reebok, Panasonic and Seat to use her image. The latter even became the official sponsor of her European tour. Shakira always adds a certain provocative, rock-star, genuine and sexy touch to everything she does. Her concerts are a consummate dance spectacle. When her hips start moving, we challenge anyone to keep from shifting their feet or from imitating each and every one of her movements and contortions. Her latest music video for “Loba” is a fine example of her dance prowess. Locked inside a cage, the Colombian gives a veritable master class on dance and sensuality, keeping time with what have become the most famous hips in the world. In the 2008 edition of Rock in Rio, over 75,000 people danced along with her during an extensive journey through her catalogue. For all those seeking a repeat performance, and for those who missed the boat last year, well, it’s your lucky day: Shakira is coming back to this year’s Rock in Rio festival, which will be held in Madrid in June. The “Ciudad del Rock” (City of Rock) will again play host, with some 200,000m2 in which to savour, for another straight year, a truly luxurious line-up.
