H

aving played a starring role at the recent Goya Awards, where he won Best Actor, Benicio Del Toro paid a visit to Barcelona to launch Che Guerrilla. The film also earned the star a Palm d’Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Aside from his obviously Hispanic name, Spain’s relationship with Del Toro goes back to 1993 when he filmed Huevos de Oro (English title ‘Golden Balls’) in Benidorm with Catalan director Bigas Luna. He slowly climbed out of the car, smiling at the cheers of his awaiting fans with a smile while taking in the sight of crowd. Tall and corpulent, his eyes underscored by those large bags which intensify his sleepy expression, Benicio Del Toro discussed the concluding instalment of the two-part eulogy to the Argentinean revolutionary directed by Steven Soderbergh. Laid back and softly spoken, Del Toro appeared sporting a black baseball cap which gave him a youthful and carefree air. He met the multitude of press that had flocked for a rigorous photo call with a resigned professionalism. Amongst other things, he stated that Che was the role of his life, although he admitted that he experienced many fears and doubts on being faced with the task of interpreting a figure of such historical magnitude. The actor also talked of his admiration for the city of Barcelona, and in particular for the work of local talents Gaudí, Serrat and Pau Casals. Del Toro’s taciturn and disturbingly intense gaze suggests that life has not always been that easy for him. There is a determination in his eyes, but also a hint of sadness. Del Toro lost his mother at an early age, a tragedy which completely changed his life and forced him to mature very quickly, probably equipping him with the self-conviction that has helped him achieve all the goals he aspired to. Distinctive Style Benicio Del Toro stands out from other Latino actors of his generation, such as Andy García or Antonio Banderas, thanks to his interpretive performance style, based on a introspective reading of his characters. His minimal gestures and expressions were a key feature of his highly-praised roles to date: the homicidal maniac in 21 Grams, the corrupt policeman in Traffic and the head of an Italian mafia family in El Funeral. Che, Guerrilla was released in Spain on 27 February, a few days before the Oscar Awards Ceremony, for which the Soderbergh film had not received any nominations.

BIOGRAPHY Benicio Del Toro was born into a family of Puerto Rican lawyers of Spanish and Italian heritage. His life was changed irrevocably at the age of nine, when his mother died of hepatitis and he moved with his father and older brother to a small town in Pennsylvania. He began studying law at an early age, but within a few months he realised that his vocation in life was in the arts. He went on to study acting, first in New York and then in Los Angeles, making his debut at the tender age of 20 in the legendary series Miami Vice. His second film role was in Licence to Kill, in which he briefly appeared as a villain opposite Timothy Dalton’s Bond. However was not until 1995 when he appeared in The Usual Suspects that his status as a Hollywood star was sealed. The year 2000 was extremely successful for Del Toro, with roles in two high-profile films, Snatch and Traffic, which catapulted him into the spotlight, the latter winning him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as well as Golden Globe. The actor suddenly had Hollywood at his fingertips. His popularity grew exponentially and he became a cinematographic icon among the growing Hispanic community in the USA. Blockbusters and leading roles ensued, such as Sin City, 21 Grams and The Hunted, consolidating his career. Having recently turned 42, Del Toro was appeared in nearly 30 films and is without doubt a contemporary legend of the big screen.
