Los ojos de Julia
P
erhaps making short but determined steps, passing on tiptoe and moving with elegance, came from having breathed the love of ballet at home from a very young age. And also maybe everything she built and her personal projects show how logical order responds to a vocation architecture that invited her to build her way of interpretation in this manner. Belén Rueda was born in Madrid but her parents, an engineer and professor of ballet, moved to live in Alicante when she and her two brothers were very young. This is where she grew academically and artistically. At 18 years old, after rejecting a scholarship to study in Paris as a professional dancer, she decided to return to the capital to begin her studies in Architecture. She combined her studies with odd jobs as a model until in 1990 she landed a role as a flight attendant in a program on the then newly released channel Telecinco. VIP Night became a ratings success for a fresh and innovative format and Belén started to become a popular face for the Spanish. Soon came the offer to be the co-host of The Late Show and there started an unstoppable television career that included television programs such as The Wheel of Fortune and Family Physician, and her debut as an actress in Journalists and The Mountain. It was in 2004 when Belén Rueda made the leap to the big screen with the film Mar Adentro, winning 14 film awards and an Oscar for best foreign language film. In making this
debut, she co-stared with childhood sweetheart Javier Bardem, and was directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who surprised critics with a moving view of the history of Galician Ramón Sampedro. Her role in the production earned her the award of Best Actress from the Spanish Film Academy, a great omen of a successful career in film and television. Following the success of Mar Adentro came The Orphanage in 2007. The film, directed by newcomer Juan Antonio Bayona, allowed her her first leading role and film in fantasy and suspense. Belén Rueda was nominated for the Best Actress Award for her performance, but could not clinch what would have been her second statuette. The film did however manage to win in 7 of the 14 categories in which it was nominated. In 2010, Alejandro Amenabar, now a close friend, had her back for a movie he was producing named El Mal Ajeno, which was directed by Oscar Santos. In the film Belén shared the limelight with Angie Cepeda and Amenabar’s favorite actor since his debut in Open Your Eyes, Eduardo Noriega. The Fantastic Film Festival of Sitges is the stage for the presentation of the second work of the actress in 2010. Julia’s Eyes, from the producer of The Orphanage and directed by Guillem Morales, will open the program, being one of the most anticipated of this 43rd edition. It is a pleasure to welcome you to Sitges and again enjoy her quality as a performer. We look forward to your presence at many future editions.
