Guangzhou International Travel Fair 2012 was one of the most important international tourism exhibitions in both China and the Asia-Pacific region since its debut in 1993.

with its ethnic characteristics and traditions in ‘China-Russia Tourism 2012’. Several Spanish Michelin star chefs were invited to China to prepare numerous kinds of Spanish cuisines. Exhibitors from Turkey, Hungary, Austria, Nepal, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Macau, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, and Kenya also attended the exhibition in order to provide visitors with wonderful travel opportunities in places all over the world. Uniting with Asia Hotel Forum & Starlight Awards, GITF 2012 set up an Asia Hotel Expo onsite. The fair made use of its brand appeal and influences in the domestic hotel industry, attracting high-end international brands like Starwood and InterContinental to Guangzhou. In the major consumer market of China, as well as media in Germany, UK, Malaysia, India and Singapore, the goal was to provide the most up-to-date travel information to exhibitors, visitors and Guangzhou citizens alike. The tourism bureaus of Inner Mongolia, Beijing and Wuhan joined the exposition to increase the input and expand their scale in order to obtain valuable share in the domestic market. Guang-Shen-Zhu and Guang-Fo-Zhao City Union united the surrounding areas of similar cultures and wowed visitors while further promoting the development of the tourism industry in Guangzhou City

T

he annual Guangzhou International Travel Fair took place on March 1-3 at Area C in the China Import and Export Fair Complex. The GITF 2012 accommodated about 700 exhibitors in three separate halls within a display area of 22,000 square meters—15% of participants from last year’s exhibition returned—making it the largest demonstration since its debut in 1993. Each hall encompassed a theme: the international hall, the themed hall and the domestic hall. The new overseas players in the foreign tourism bureau include Canada, U.S.A, Russia, Iceland, Iran and Great Britain. Their opulent and exotic presentations, along with other key players from home and abroad made GITF one of the most important international tourism exhibitions in both China and the Asia-Pacific region. Sponsored by Guangdong Provincial Tourism Administration and Tourism Administration of Guangzhou Municipality, GITF 2012 was organized by Hannover Milano Fairs Shanghai Ltd. The international hall and themed hall were open to trade visitors during the first two days and then to the public on the third. However, the domestic hall was open to all trade visitors as well as the public for all three days. The Canadian Tourism Commission had the strongest return with a large booth of over 200 square meters. The Russian Tourism Bureau also made a spectacular presentation

I

n roles of spectacular diversity, Jonas Kaufmann has triumphed internationally as a German tenor.

We heard, that in your youth, you used to spend Sunday mornings listening to music with your sister… is this something that has continued over the years or has your busy schedule “forced” you to dispense with these “little family pleasures”? Fortunately, we could reestablish this tradition of listening in the family circle. Of course, it’s not with my sister anymore, who has lived in Northern Germany for many years, but with my wife, who is also a singer and our three kids. And instead of “Sunday morning on sofa” it’s whenever we’ve got some time, mostly in the evening or during longer routes with the car or live in the opera house.

“A good performance can still have a magical effect on listeners.” At that time, going to freelance was a risky decision for sure, and I knew the risk I was taking. Of course I was more than a little uneasy over not being on a permanent roster anywhere, but I didn’t want other people making decisions for me anymore. I wanted to choose my own roles in keeping with the development of my voice, making sure I would be neither overtaxed nor under challenged. Thank God, it all worked out. I was especially happy to get an offer from the theatre in Trier, also on the French border, to appear in the world première of “The Glass Menagerie”, Antonio Bibalo’s operatic version of the great Tennessee Williams play. After that I got a chance to sing at the Stuttgart State Opera, which had just been singled out for the title “Opera House of the Year”. In November of 1997, I made my début there as

the Arabian scholar Edrisi in the opera “King Roger” by Karol Szymanowski. They also gave me the chance to sing my first Alfredo in “La Traviata” and other major tenor roles. Between the last performances of “King Roger,” rehearsals for my first international production began: Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano with the great stage director Giorgio Strehler. The work with this genius was an absolute privilege for me – and all the more was the sorrow of the entire company when Strehler passed away shortly before completing his work directing the production in December of 1997. But the production was an unforgettable success and I will never forget the first night, when the audience called Strehler’s name at the end of the opera, when candles were the only illumination on stage. Very touching! In 2001, William Mason, the Director General of entrepreneurs from the Lyric Opera of Chicago invited you to the United States for the first time – to sing Cassio in “Otello”… what differences did you find between American and European audience? During my first production in Chicago, I’m sure that I sensed some differences between American and European audiences, but everything was overshadowed by the horrors of the terror attacks. September 11 was in the mid of our rehearsal time, the premiere of “Otello” was eleven days later. Between the last two performances I took a plane from Chicago to New York to audition for James Levine. In fact, this was already my second audition for him; the

Your first major role was in Johann Strauss’ comic operetta “Eine Nacht in Venedig” we suppose you have special memories of the time, but was it that performance that marked a turning point in your career? This was Caramello, the Duke’s personal court barber, in “Eine Nacht in Venedig”, a new production at the Regensburg Opera, which is about an hour and a half by train from Munich. I was still a student then, and I had to get special permission to do it, because I would have to be available for a grand total of 36 performances. I won’t call it a “turning point” in my career, but for the first time I could taste the joy of singing and acting a real major role.

In the summer of 1996, the State Theatre in Saarbrücken offered you to renew your permanent contract but you declined the invitation to choose your own roles. In line with the development of your voice… was it a risky decision? Or was it always clear for you, that it was the right way?

But this was my first time singing in the huge auditorium of the Metropolitan Opera, alone on the stage, singing the arias of Tamino and Alfredo, with James Levine sitting in the dark and listening. I loved to sing there and this was the beginning of our collaboration.

The giant step in your career came in February 2006 with your debut as Alfredo in “La Traviata” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York... if you had to choose a new role to debut at the Metropolitan... would you repeat as Alfredo? No, I don’t think so, though it was one the greatest moments of my life. But there are some roles which I consider even more suitable to me, both as a singer and as an actor, let’s say Don José and Werther, Cavaradossi and Don Carlo.

Since the first “Romantic Arias” have followed others... and with great success! This year Adriana Lecouvreur has been published... would you give us a preview of what and when your next job will be?

You mean future projects on DVD or CD? There are plans to put the Zurich production of Humperdinck’s “Königskinder” on DVD, and I’m looking forward to the DVD version of the London “Tosca” with Angela Gheorghiu and Bryn Terfel, conducted by Tony Pappano. The next CD will be Simon Rattle’s production of “Carmen”, which had its premiere at the Salzburg Easter Festival this year and has been recorded shortly after in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall by EMI. As you know, it will come back to Salzburg in August, again with Magdalena Kozena and Genia Kühmeier singing the leading ladies. Last December in New York you received the prize of the Gerda Lissner Charity Foundation which you donated entirely to the BSO’s Children’s and Young People’s Program Campus for which you are an ambassador… congratulations on always supporting the young. For me, supporting projects which bring classical music and opera to kids and youngsters is a duty, a must! After all, they are our

audience in future. Furthermore, I’m convinced that without those “Sunday listenings” at home, without that Sunday afternoon family performance of “Madama Butterfly” in the National Theater in Munich, I might have never discovered the magic world of opera, which became such an essential part of my life. So, I try to support those projects as much as I can. Of course you will never reach the masses, but I think that a good opera performance or concert can still have this magical effect on young listeners, despite of computer games and all those forms of modern entertainment. This summer we will see you for the first time in Spain at the Perelada Festival… How will you be presented the next season… your upcoming appointments with the audience? You mean in Spain? Hopefully I will come back to Spain many times, since I’ve got very nice memories to performances and concerts in Valencia, Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid – and to the audiences as well. I

nvolved in all stages of footwear design from an early age and ever sensitive to “what women want”, Stuart Weitzman has managed to translate his admiration for the fairer gender into a distinctive product that has become a veritable global hit. You have forged an interesting relationship with flats... As fashion creators, we have invested a great deal of effort into making flats tasteful, so that they’re as beautiful as high-heels. We’re well aware that women are after comfort, but it’s not just about a simple flip-flop, ballet slipper or sandal that “works”. Sandals and flats produce the same sound and smile on a woman’s face as 5 inch heels. What’s more, flats sell better than high-heels and have turned into remarkable creations, with snake skin, jewels...

You have been manufacturing your shoes in Spain for a long time. Why is that? In practical terms, it has to do with the fact we built our own factory here and our organisation, outside the US, is here. In functional terms, the main reason is that Alicante is a community that, with cities like Elda and Elche, has been manufacturing footwear for 200 years, helping to develop a tradition of producing quality footwear. Manufacturing footwear is

// Biography He began his career as an apprentice of his father, shoe designer, under the name of Mr. Seymour. His first design was a heeled shoe. Then followed by party shoes, sports shoes, golf shoes and a bridal shoe collection and other shoes and waterproofed boots.1995 he opened his first store on Madison Street in New York. It is one of the largest manufacturers in the U.S. women’s footwear and the shoes are sold in 45 countries around the world. Presence in Europe and the Middle East SUMMER 2012

What are this season’s major trends? This season will be about bright-coloured, fluorescent shoes, if you want to send an audacious and powerful message. Pale colours, if you’re looking to embody tranquillity; and

even combining the same shoe with what we call colour block. That’s perhaps the top trend. Flats represent the other trend. This season, we have unveiled some gorgeous ideas, new additions and interesting features. And lastly, for the girl who wants to be extra sexy, no shoe sets the mood better than high cocktail shoes, high sandals or sandals with a platform. While this is nothing new in terms of “fashion”, it gets rejuvenated every season, and that’s the very epitome of a trend. The kind of evening shoe we designed for Angelina Jolie, with a hidden, interior platform, isn’t going to disappear this season.

Tell me a few details about the production process... The components which form the footwear (before becoming a shoe) are handled by women who work from home or in small offices near their houses. While the process ultimately

So it’s up to us to find a way for them to work while, in many instances, looking after the family or raising the children. Where do you buy your shoes? I don’t have a preferred brand. I often go “touring”, as they say in Italy. If I see something I like while I’m walking down the street or in a store, I buy it. It might not be what I need at the time, but I know I’ll need it later on. Although, in my opinion, there’s one essential factor when it comes to buying shoes: It’s gotta feel good on me. It’s always been the most important thing. Women’s shoes shouldn’t have to damage their feet. The way you buy shoes influences how the designer makes them, in terms of comfort and function, as well as design

embers of the royalty, princesses or even celebrities like Heidi Klum or Beyoncé… all of them have something in common: when dressing, they start with their feet. And it’s not just that Patricia Rosales designs make shoes play a major role in a person’s wardrobe, they make them the protagonist. Extravagant and luxurious, they are “couture” designs, crafted with the most noble of materials: exotic brocades, feathers, embroideries, embellishments, fine jewelry, precious stones… But to Patricia Rosales, designing shoes has been a “quirk of fate”. This is, in her words, how her story unfolds: “From an early age I’ve been passionate about shoes, to the point of starting to collect them. Later on, I studied economy, marketing and graphic design and when I created my first company (ESME), I packed my bags and left to learn the trade, to learn how to be an artisan shoemaker. The concept of what I wanted to do was very clear in my head; I wanted to do something different, that’s why

I started studying gemology and launched my first jewelry shoes collection. I believe that this was meant to be, a friend of mine (the Saudi princess) took the first pair I made and then orders started to arrive”. Do you still have that collection you began as a child? Of course, and also books and magazines about shoes back from the 60s, you can recreate someone’s story through shoes. And how many pairs do you have? To be honest, I don’t know how many. My size is 37 (Europe), which is the sample size, so you can imagine over 2.000 pairs… Which is your favorite? I think it depends on the occasion, but the MONSUL model is a very special shoe, one of the firm’s basics, it’s been named after one of the beaches in AlmerÍa, and it’s a way to keep connected with my homeland…

What do you take into account when designing a shoe for a customer? What is your inspiration? The customer has the power; I just make their dreams come true.

Can you give us some tips on how to choose, according to you, “the perfect shoe”? It must be comfortable, unique; it has to make you feel powerful. And what can we find in the Patricia Rosales collection for this summer? Platforms and sandals with lots of swarovski. You have ateliers in Paris and Madrid, what’s the next step? Dubai and Riyadh

Couture shoes, “small works of art”... Of course, and always upon request. I work Haute Couture from the very start, but for next year, we are planning to open exclusive stores with Prêt-á-porter and Semi-Haute-Couture collections. Is there anything we don’t know about Patricia Rosales that you’d like to add? (Laughs) I could add a thousand things; I’m a pretty complex woman. Would you like to add a detail or comment? I design for people that start to dress from their feet and that wish to feel free, which is the ultimate luxury

How is the shoe making process? How long does it take to design a pair? If it’s a tailored shoe, first we must digitalize the customer’s feet to make the last and fitting tests. The design is fast, I design on my computer with the customer; perhaps the customer

takes longer to choose the materials than I to design. The estimated delivery is between 60 and 90 days, depending on the model produced.

Greene saw the woman rather than the diva. The sense of mutual appreciation between Marilyn and Milton is also patent in the choice of more unexpected settings. o matter if it is a wristwatch, mobile phone or eyewear, when the product in question is used regularly, it is important the users are happy. If a company invests time and effort into the product, irrespective of what it is, and focuses on customer satisfaction, the product will please. At TAG Heuer, regardless of what they are developing, they strive to give their customers the utmost benefit in terms of both style and practicality. Le CITY deluxe sat down with Thomas Houlon, Innovation Director for TAG Heuer, and honorary Chairman Jack Heuer himself. Is it true you haven’t always worked in the watch industry? TH: I actually spent the first 12 years of my career in eyewear. Designing glasses consisted of just not sticking a logo on the frame, but giving the glasses themselves real value. After ten years, it had become absolutely massive, even though our models were quite pricy. We managed to give customers the utmost benefit in terms of style, which, while pure and simple, was extremely practical. I then started working in watches, as the innovation manager for all watches, and I’ve been working on innovation ever since.

What is so special about this phone? TH: It all comes down to craftsmanship and focusing on the basics. In our opinion, today’s technology sometimes goes too far and is too complicated. And while we want to revert to something simple, it is also technologically fantastic and, first and foremost, beautiful.

“IT ALL COMES DOWN TO CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FOCUSING ON THE BASICS” (THOMAS HOULON) How will you celebrate your 80th birthday this year, Mr. Heuer? JH: I’m a product man, and I’ve designed a watch to commemorate my 80th birthday. I’ve signed the back and stamped it with the family’s 15th century coat of arms, which I find quite interesting. It is a limited edition of only 3,000 models, and numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are reserved for my 3 children and me

Could you explain a bit about the new models you have recently released? It is a very unique watch. Actually it is the first watch with a mechanical moment for 5 time zones, which work together simultaneously. It took me two and a half years to develop this movement, which is an IceLink Swiss-made movement.

From a family of jewellers, Andy Sogoyan represents this exclusive brand, a passion for diamond watches and the continuous innovation that makes it a favourite among successful artists, singers, djs and athletes the world over.

You mainly create watches for men, but do you do so for women as well? Of course we also have watches for women. Last year we produced 50 percent for men and 50 percent for women. As you can see, we now have a lot of diamond watches, so our watches are now 70% for women and 30% for men. What is your main market? Is Los Angeles or the US the market where you sell the most? No, as a brand, we are also in the Middle East, Russia, Ukraine and now Asia is quickly becoming a strong market for us

In this first opportunity, Dani Clos tells us about his experience and his role as test driver. How has your experience been in a Formula 1 open-wheel car? Well, the experience has been incredible. I’ve been riding this type of cars since 2008. It’s fantastic to be on the highest category of car racing at world level. Are you happy with your own performance as a test-driver? I’m very happy with the team. We’re doing our jobs well and this is a long term, medium term project. It’s a very good thing for me to be given so many opportunities by the team to climb onto the car on Fridays. How do you see your future on Formula 1 racing? What are your expectations? With both feet on the ground. We’re getting nearer to what I’ve been dreaming of my whole life and I feel privileged. I trust 100% on the team and I know that they’ll do everything in their power to prepare a competent car. My goal is, of course, to become the official pilot and one day, to become world champion. It’s something that demands much sacrifice and work SUMMER 2012

t was last year, on November that the registration of Pedro Martínez de la Rosa as the official pilot for the 2012 season of the renewed HRT team was announced. He became the first Spaniard to be the team’s official pilot. This event put an end to a long series of rumors surrounding the pilot and the Spanish team. The old timer, Luis Pérez-Sala, was appointed as the next team leader. From that moment onwards, HRT has focused mainly on building a stable base, both economically and in sports, that allowed the team to increase its competitiveness, focusing on three main goals: the open-wheel car, the pilots and a new site in Spain. It was then Narain Karthikeyan who signed with HRT to be the second pilot for the team. During the first pre-season tests that took place in Jerez, in early February, 2012, the team competed with De la Rosa and with last year’s open-wheel car, hoping to get the new one soon. HRT is experiencing a renewed image in this new cycle, with a dominance of white and some specks of gold. This February has been, without a doubt, a month filled with celebrations for HRT. On the one hand, they were securing the new site at the Caja Magica sports structure, in Madrid, which meant the coming together of all the team’s activities under one roof. This translates as a fundamental success for the team’s development. And they also found their test driver, Dani Clos, who has been performing superbly this season. Additionally, they later

ascual Sainz de Vicuña, shooting the ball goalwards, displays a remarkably delicate “near side” swing. Currently the top handicap among Spanish polo players, his passion is certainly not happenstance. Born into an Argentinean family, a country where polo is a highly traditional sport, his father is an ex-polo player, which made it easier for him to take command of the family cavalry. At just 26 years of age, he has taken part in all major tournaments in Argentina and the United Kingdom and is a member of the Spanish national team. We met up with him at the spectacular and exclusive Dos Lunas Polo Club, where we discussed the inner workings of this sport. How did you get where you are? I’ve been playing seriously for about ten years, and it all comes down to perseverance and playing a great deal, virtually every day of the year. Along with the experience you get playing in different tournaments in Spain and travelling around Argentina.

“Polo is not very popular in Spain or Europe. It’s still not televised” Why is polo such an elitist sport? There are fewer places to play in Europe, where it’s difficult to find grassy areas and there isn’t much of a tradition. In Argentina, on the other hand, horses are much more accessible and you can play almost anywhere, meaning it isn’t quite as elitist over there. It’s a particularly famous sport in England... Yes, in England it is, although it’s becoming more popular in Spain. I remember 10,000 people attended the final of the Gold Cup in Sotogrande. But it’s more of a household name in England, thanks to British Royal Family’s longstanding involvement.

How do you train to be a champion? We organise practice matches to exercise the horses and play amongst ourselves. We ride, knock the ball around and train physically. Whereas, before, players didn’t exercise much, they do today. Like all sports, polo has evolved, and now we train and go running. Do you always ride the same horse? No, not at all. That’s another reason it’s complicated. At one point, polo was an Olympic sport and then it was dropped. Every player needs between six and seven horses, as they’re forced to cover large distances. Do you have a favourite horse? Yes, a 15 year old mare named Casilda. I’ve had her since I began, and she’s been with me throughout the years, as my handicap has improved, and she’s always been fantastic. We understand each other, and while she might not suit other players, I think she’s great. What are your plans for this year? I’m currently taking part in the Sotogrande tournament at the Santa María Polo Club. It’s a great competition and we hope to do well. Then I have the Argentinean league, from September to December, and afterwards we’ll see. The US might be an option.

How old were you when you started? I was 15, which is relatively late in the world of polo. In Argentina, there’s a championship called the “Foals’ Cup” where kids start playing at the age of 8. A lot of my friends began when they were 12, and I started at 15, as I was somewhat afraid of horses as a child.

Is the sport popular in Spain? No, it’s not very popular in Spain or Europe. It’s still not televised. As I see it, the fact that exclusive brand names like Rolex and Cartier are so highly involved in polo indicates it isn’t a sport for everyone; which is what makes it distinctive.

What are the mallets made from? From bamboo; the canes come from the India. They’re difficult to make; a painstaking process, all done by hand. As they’re wooden, they have to be stuck together, crafted, adjusted, the head has to be fitted, and all the alterations that are involved. How long do the mallets last? They could very well last an entire season, depending on the fields you play on and how lucky you are. If you strike with the head it’ll last longer than if you do so with the shaft, where it’ll break easily. What kind of uniform do you use in polo? Boots, knee guards, helmet, wrist guards, gloves and goggles.The goggles are very important. The ball is extremely hard, and more than a few players have lost an eye. I remember a match where, had I not been wearing goggles, I’d have lost an eye. Underage kids are required to wear goggles in Argentina. Then you need a mallet, riding crop, horse, and you’re set!

And the horses? They also undergo lots of preparation. For example, when we train, the saddles and horseshoes have to be prepared. Each horse uses a different horseshoe. Everything has to be organised; polo requires a lot of work. But the horse keepers do an excellent job. Not only do they look after the horses, they also need a fantastic memory.

How many people do you have helping you? Two horse keepers; normally the head horse keeper and an assistant. We’re also there to

mount and lend a hand. They do an incredible job; without them it would be impossible. They’re up and out with the horses at five in the morning. The horses sleep after lunch, and then they’re back out with them from half past four until eight. Which are better, males or females? Polo is traditionally played with females. In the past, if something happened to a male, if he got injured, he was no longer fit for breeding and most were gelded. Females, on the other hand, could still be used for breeding.

They’re more sensitive in terms of handling, in the mouth, which is why polo players tend to prefer mares. How long can they keep playing? Like footballers, it depends on injuries, on their physical condition. Some horses keep going for 8 years, which is a long time for a horse. They normally don’t start until they’re 6. They’re tamed when they’re 3, gradually introduced to polo when they’re 4 and enter serious competition at 6. We have to wait quite a while

uxury, design and modernity are the cornerstones of one of the world’s most prominent fashion companies. You see, Loewe evolves with the passage of time and is committed to revamping its stores. The reopening of its Barcelona location, designed by architect Peter Marino, was followed by the Loewe Gallery in the same city. Le CITY deluxe had a conversation with CEO Lisa Montague, who went a step further and explained the firm’s strategies and new projects to our magazine. What projects has the brand focused on recently? The first thing was to deal with enhancing quality, working on our leather products. As well as refurbishing the entire store network, as, of the 162. Today, we renovated 31 stores Peter Marino concept (including the Paseo de Gracia) and we will renew for the remainder of the year, 30 more stores. We have a lot to do in the next three years across the entire network, but there’s no stopping now: we’re looking to expand into new markets. What about India? I think India is going to be an extremely interesting market. For the meantime, we’re concerned with making sure the London, Paris, New York and Rome markets are covered.

“The brand’s essence has a lot to do with TOUCH” As CEO of Loewe, what has been your biggest challenge? Refurbishing our stores as quickly as possible to send a coherent message about the brand while it’s being revamped. We’re not re-launching the brand, just updating it. We’re focused on getting to the crux of the matter, delving into the brand to find out why people connect so strongly with it. What it intends to express, and its values. Expressing them coherently in highly distinct markets around the world, at the same time, and

the investment this requires; that’s the biggest challenge. Getting it done quickly! What does the Loewe Gallery represent? The Barcelona store is our most important flagship location and currently the only one large enough to hold all of our collections. Therefore we’re firmly rooted in Barcelona. We are a Spanish brand, and naturally a lot of people regard us as the number one luxury Spanish company. While we were looking for a location, the two projects merged in one of those remarkable strokes of fate to form a gallery, museum and interactive experience. We happened upon this place as a temporary location for our store, but we enjoyed working here so much that we sought to find some way of keeping it. We were astounded by how well it suited the project, so we quickly brought the two concepts together. What are the next steps for Loewe? The great thing about Loewe is that it’s a business opportunity. It’s a brand-name that has 166 years of history, is highly esteemed in its own markets, strong in Japan, with a substantial current volume and immense growth in Asia. While we don’t have locations in a considerable part of the world, wherever we are, we’re strong SUMMER 2012

In your opinion, what sets Loewe apart from other bag brands?

The brand’s essence has a lot to do with feel. At our stores, this essence is expressed through the feel of the materials and the colours, the quality of the leather, the way in which it is worked, how it expresses the brand’s personality. We don’t showcase luxury products behind plate glass; they’re meant to be touched by the customers, something which is patent when you pick up the bags, because they’re light, smooth, tactile... and the colour lends the brand an identity. It also has to do with the light in Spain and the remarkable skill of the country’s local artisans.

Chris Del Gatto, co-founder, chairman and CEO of CIRCA has innovated the idea of selling jewelry as more than just a suitable luxury service

“I’ve always loved the beauty and being able to hold something so tactile,” Del Gatto said. “I love the idea and ability of working with something that is literally a part of art and I also love the history, which is important, in dealing with historical elements. I love that it’s so creative.” CIRCA has about 15-25 clients per office per day and each average transaction is very high. No appointment is necessary and each process may take anywhere between 15-45 minutes. “You come in and sit in a waiting room and then are ushered into a beautiful private room where a buyer will look at your jewels and tell you what they would pay for the price,” Del Gatto said. “If the client accepts, the buyer writes a check right then and there. Part of what we give the client is our knowledge and expertise and a single buyer at CIRCA can create around $20 million USD in turnover in a year.” Outside of work, Del Gatto enjoys playing polo and when CIRCA began sponsoring polo teams and tournaments in 2004, his hobby increased and eventually became another passion. Del Gatto brings the same dynamic eagerness, inquisitiveness and competitiveness to polo as he does to business. He participates in tournaments on The Hamptons, Palm Beach and Argentine Polo circuits

Over the years, Matthiessen has become very inspired by people. One of the photographers that inspire him the most is Jess Wall, he is very attracted to his work. Nevertheless, he also acknowledges the presence of an endless variety of work, from great documentary and staged photography, to that of amateurs and professionals alike.

He is currently working on an artistic, almost documentary project in the South of France, experimenting with extrodinary new ideas. We will be right to expect more from David Matthiessen in years to come.

hat comes to Photographer David Matthiessen mind when asked about luxury? The evening sun, white tablecloths, a Lobster and a perfect rose on a beautiful Spanish square... these elements sound picture perfect. But was he always this keen on visualization? Did he always envision his thoughts materialize in a snapshot or think of himself with a camera in hand? According to Matthiessen, as a young boy, a skateboard would have been much more appealing to him than the reflex camera his grandfather gave him, his first one ever. Yet when his grandfather explained to him how the camera worked, a spark of interest ignited within his very soul. This interest evolved into fondness, and the fondness then flourished into the profound love of photography he possesses today.

The Pleasure of a Midsummer’s Drive

The new 911 has a wider track at the front and a lower roofline, lending it a more dynamic and, sports-wise, more elegant head-on appearance. While the new Bi-Xenon headlights are fitted as standard, the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), with dynamic cornering lights and speed-sensitive headlight control logic, is available as an option. The Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet comes equipped with 20-inch wheels as standard, larger than those of its predecessor, affording the convertible heightened sports authority. The tyres’ enhanced rolling surface improves both comfort and performance. The vehicle’s interior design represents a clean break with the previous generation and features luxurious materials and finishes available in a number of colours. Notable additions include the centre console and its 4.6-inch screen. The seats offer 4-way electric adjustment and provide heightened comfort and an even sportier hold. The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet’s performance is exceptional. This Porsche comes fitted with a 3.8-litre, 400-hp boxer engine and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, with a top speed

of 301 km/h. When it comes time to purchase the vehicle, customers may choose between a 7-speed manual gearbox and a double-clutch PDK (Doppelkupplung).The latter, together with the Sport Chrono Plus Package, helps reduce fuel consumption and improve acceleration times. As opposed to the majority of its rivals, who have consistently opted for retractable hardtops, Porsche continues to place its trust on traditional canvas tops. In this regard, however, the new 911 comes equipped with the latest advances. Firstly, the hood is manufactured from magnesium and covered with canvas fabric, available in four colours: black, blue, brown and red. Electrically powered, the hood is operated using the key remote or a button on the centre console and opens and closes in just 13 seconds. It remains operable while the vehicle is moving, provided the car does not exceed 50 km/h. The multi-layer fabric top from the 997 model and earlier generations has been replaced by a much simpler and more effective structure.

Porsche continues to make noise in 2012. A few months ago, the German car manufacturer unveiled two versions of its new 911 model. The time has now come to view its convertible brother: the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet.

hen planning an escape to the sea, you would be well advised to know about the latest large luxury sailing catamarans that are on offer for charter. On her recent stop in Göcek, in light airs, she motored swiftly along the coast to a secluded bay, where the guests spent the morning in the water or in the shade with a book. If there is one word Jordi Cruz repeats time and time again in the course of this interview it’s “complex”. Yet he is not necessarily addressing the complexity of his cuisine or an insurmountable hurdle in his auspicious professional career, but the decisiveness, commitment and clarity with which he approaches each project. Needless to say, and despite the circumstances, his outlook is always positive.

orn in Manresa, the man who boasts the title of chef at restaurants L’angle de Sant Fruitós de Bages and ABaC discovered his talent early on. “As a child, sometime between the age of 7 and 10, I realised I was good at cooking, and bad at everything else; that is, I could make it a trade, a hobby”, he explains. Now 33 years old, Cruz’s career, while still burgeoning, has been intense. At 17, he was already a head chef with 10 cooks under his command. At 25, at the helm of the restaurant Estany Clar, he claimed his first Michelin Star and, in the process, became the youngest chef to receive this distinction. In 2010, he took over from Xavier Pellicer as head chef at ABaC and, thanks to his impeccable management, managed to recapture the Michelin Star in jeopardy following the previous chef ’s departure.

ABaC Restaurant has been awarded by the Catalan Academy of Gastronomy as the best restaurant in 2011. nomy. At ABaC , we prepare cuisine influenced by the tradition Xavi left behind and which revolves around top-quality produce handled with great respect. We’re artisans, and, with the philosophy of equal parts tradition and creativity, gracefully incorporating the two, we aim to make this produce shine on the plate. What do you expect from diners who sample your dishes? We work to ensure our customers eat exceedin-

gly well, and that what they eat is delicious. After that, if we surprise or elate them, great. But that’s not our ambition. In today’s day and age, we’ve all seen so much that surprising people is complex. The concept of “sustainability” is intimately linked to your cuisine... The word “sustainability” is the solution to a lot of problems. It’s like we said earlier: aiming to always surprise isn’t sustainable, but cooking well and preparing great food is. Nature is sustainable, because it produces what it can produce and that’s it. Us humans should try and think along these same lines: consume what we can consume. What are your expectations for the year? I don’t have any. I stopped having expectations after my first Michelin Star and with the ability to manage teams. Now it’s time to consolidate our current projects, especially ABaC . Spain’s current economic climate is dreadful, and there isn’t room for 20 large restaurants. Therefore, our goal is to just keep it going. And if ABaC happens to receive its third Star, that would be a dream come true. I’m also thinking about writing an open online book, where you can post recipes and take photos in situ SUMMER 2012

What was the biggest challenge when you took over at ABaC? ABaC knows no challenges. The one handicap here was perhaps the fact the previous chef had won two Michelin Stars, and the good thing is we normalised the situation. ABaC is a superb restaurant with a fantastic team and infrastructure. So it was anything but challenging. You just do what you have to do: cook to your fullest potential, be consistent and work hard.

How would you define ABaC’s cuisine? It’s complex, because it’s always changing. I was raised at a time when creativity was becoming the norm. Ferrán helped chefs realise that it’s normal to be creative, although it’s not normal in gastro-

Table art “Caoba is a unique, distinct concept designed for those looking for first-class products, service and atmosphere”, explains one of the establishment’s partners, Giancarlo Mammoli. This signature restaurant, headed by Italian chef Vicenzo Marconi, uses culinary influences from all over the world. Here, guests can savour dishes like Mediterranean sashimi, scallops with crunchy speck, langoustine tartar with migas and ox tail. Aside from the cuisine, this restaurant, located on Paseo Pintor Rosales, 76, has another peculiar feature: it is made up of a series of rooms reserved for people seeking privacy and the crème de la

Right at home Eduardo Dato, 5 is home to a new reference point when it comes to eating a rich, varied and balanced meal. Here we find Lúa, a gastroestablishment which combines innovation and tradition. Its format is its most distinctive feature, with a menu-less tasting menu comprised of five

dishes and an aperitif. It also stands out for its cost-price wines and corkage fee only policy. In terms of cuisine, Chef Manuel Domínguez Carrete uses traditional recipes, like mum and gran used to make, to create dishes in which avant-garde techniques do not mask the flavours. He personally buys the fresh market-produce daily, thus striving to make his customers feel like friends over his place for a meal. While the tasting menu is renewed fortnightly, some of his most outstanding creations include octopus “ropa vieja”, horse mackerel with different textures and honey-glazed, slow-cooked rack of spring lamb. Here at this restaurant, prestigious chef Mario Sandoval takes traditional cuisine and a flair for family recipes and produces distinctive, world renowned dishes. The Sandoval trio, formed by Diego (maitre d’), Rafael (sommelier) and Mario (chef ), hope that, “entering Coque is like strolling through their history, cuisine and home... an experience for the senses.”
