Xabi Alonso
R
aised in the bosom of a footballing family, Xabi Alonso was born on November 25, 1981 in the Basque town of Tolosa. Following his father, Periko Alonso, Xabi lived in Barcelona until the age of six when he subsequently moved to San Sebastian and began his career as a footballer. Concha Beach was the Madrid star’s initial football pitch, the stage upon which his passion for the sport was born. Alongside his best friend, Mikel Arteta, who currently plays for Everton, Alonso began to carve out a dream: follow in the footsteps of his father, a successful footballer in the 1980s, and play professional football. Xabi Alonso’s first steps came in the Antiguoko, where he immediately shined. Real Sociedad was the first club to take a chance on him and where he would develop as a player. His progression was phenomenal even as a youth player, and he made his debut with the first team in a King’s Cup tie against Logroñés. At just 18 years of age he was making a name for himself in the second team. Therefore, Real Sociedad opted to send him on loan to a second division squad to aid his growth and evolution. This would be his first stint with Eibar. In 1998 he returned to San Sebastian and debuted in the First Division, later leaving on loan to Eibar once again in 2000. The following season he made his definitive return to Real Sociedad, where he would stay until 2004 and be crowned League sub-champion. In the 2004-05 season Xabi disembarked in Liverpool, the team in which he turned heads thanks to his brilliant vision of play and effective array of passes. What’s more, his potent longrange shot turned him into one of Europe’s finest holding midfielders. In the following campaign, an ankle injury kept him off the field of play for more than three months. Through patience and hard work, he
managed to heal in time for the second round of the Champions’ League, where he became one of the team’s pillars. Liverpool squared off in the final against A.C. Milan with the title in mind. Yet after half-an-hour of play, the Italians were ahead 3-0. Faith ever strong, the Reds staged a dramatic comeback with goals from Riise, Smicer and Xabi Alonso, who pocketed the last with a strong shot after Dida saved his penalty effort. Liverpool, flying high on heels of the comeback, went on to win in a penalty shootout in one of the most memorable finals in recent history, and thus hoisted the European Cup. Since his debut in 2003, Xabi Alonso has been a stalwart feature in Spain’s national side. He has taken part in the final stage of two European Championships (2004 and 2008) and one World Cup (Germany 2006). Yet Alonso’s most cherished memory with the national side undoubtedly came in the European Championship hosted by Austria and Switzerland. Alongside his team-mates, the midfielder was proclaimed Champion of Europe and voted best player in the third classificatory match against Greece. Xabi Alonso is one of those players that bring a special touch to the national side. Long-range passing ability, quick ball distribution, vision of play and a potent shot are some of the qualities the footballer from San Sebastian possesses. International experience in tow, he arrived in the Bernabéu in 2009 to become the axis of Real Madrid. Now, the new World Cup challenge of South Africa 2010 positions him as one of the national team favourites. At 28 he has conquered not only his professional dreams, but has managed to stamp his kind, amiable, simple and jovial character across the media, thereby reaching a captive audience that wishes him all the best in the world.
