Sting
An english in Madrid
O
jazeros’ of the band came from the undeniable influence of Sting, along with its own personal sound. In 1983 the song ‘Every Breath You Take’, the biggest success of The Police, marked the end of the band. In the mid-’80s, there was no British band with success and quality of the trio Sting-Summers-Copeland. Although, is has been said that a new wave of soft rock, pop and post punk had began. The Police in general, particularly Sting, are not something that can be easily duplicated. The ‘Message in a bottle “or” Walking on the Moon” are part of the emotional memories from those who have lived through the eighties. To begin his solo career, Sting started at the beginning. He met and worked with great jazz performers for his first piece of music, ‘The Dream Of The Blue Turtles’. The sound of the record showed how much Sting was a main influence in the band the Police. A few solo careers are said to have fallen short or to have been less successful than the group. But Sting is the most worthy exception, his contribution to the band cannot be surpassed by the inspiration of his individuality. “Nothing Like a Sun” from 1987, is the best of his output because it is increasingly open to new influences. Since those times, it is often uncommon to use certain instruments in the rock area. But if there is something that the success and money achieved from The Police, it would be its contributions to the new phase soloist of Sting, who had the liberty to experience and make music with almost anyone. From speaking French on his record for his admired artist Miles Davis, through collaborations with Eric Clap-

ton, Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Frank Zappa, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Johnny Cash, Charles Aznavour, Herbie Hancock, Madonna, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, Dire Straits, Rubén Blades, Phill Collins, and much more great artists. Among the hallmarks of the artist’s life, full of different shades, there are images that stand out: the concert for Amnesty International, the themes contributed to soundtracks of movies, his role as actor where he stands out as Quadrophenia (rock opera of The Who), and the image of Sting giving a recital planned out for September 11th in 2001 at his home in Tuscany, just the day the beloved New York City was attacked by the most extreme forms of terrorism. But like any self-respecting classic artist, Sting could not escape the reunion of his band members. Although the meeting did not cause any new releases, hundreds of thousands of fans hoped to see again the trio in action. In 2007 it was planned that The Police would meet again for their world tour. In 2008 Sting was invited to perform with the Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, where he realized the strength of his music release when dressed in vintage clothing. Thus was born the album, ‘Symphonicities’, which brings him back to the stage and brings us closer to Sting in Madrid. With his special guitar, the very same one Read Fender used in 1954, he will play with small detail of the sophistication to show off his unique talent.

n Oct. 30th, Sir Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner will take the stage at the El Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid and will surpass his 50th performance in Spain. Sting, who is known by this name in the public, loves this land that first created his Newcastle Big Band in 1972. It can be affirmed that his British eternal thinness and blond hair is displayed every time on stage in each of his performances. Sting has chosen the path of writing his own story line as complex as the ones of his work. It was in the city Newcastle, where the performance of Jimi Hendrix smashing his guitar against the ceiling has branded forever within Sting. Also, it was where he began receiving music lessons and where he shyly began making Jazz. Seeing that London offered better opportunities, he left his town by convincing his mother that employment of a teacher was not everything it aspired to be in his 24 years of living. The Police was founded in 1976, with its combination of French guitarist Henry Padovani (who played bass) and Stewart Copeland. Those were times when the British punk scene had dominated and when Sting was not able to get a foothold into that atmosphere, he hired the well known guitarist Andy Summers to provide better quality to the band. Later, the exit of Padovani left The Police as a trio. With ‘Roxanne’ the success began to arrive and the doors for many more memorable compositions opened. Since its first album, ‘Outlandos D’ Amour’, to the last, ‘Sinchronicity’, The Police was a band with an identity. The ‘aires
