ovember in St.Petersburg. The city is trapped in that dull stage of just waiting for the winter. We, however, didn’t give into the late autumn blues because even before all the plentiful December festivities of the Russian Constitution Day (you know you love it), Christmas, and the rest begun, we had another reason to celebrate. Our tired bodies and minds were warmed and loosened up by the mysterious Sade, the eighties queen of soul and jazz. If you are interested in statistics, Sade still remains one of the most successful British female artists of the twentieth century. A Grammy for the Best Newcomer category in 1985 and 50 million albums sold worldwide are among her many achievements. There are some musicians out there who are always in the media, you can’t go anywhere without hearing their name, but if you try and

remember any good songs, you are completely stuck. Well, with Sade it’s completely the other way round. It could be because her name is fairly unusual and hard to pronounce both in Russian and English, but we are more inclined to think it’s because she puts so much of herself into her music that she exists with it as a whole, rather than concentrating on which cut of meat to make a new dress out of. You can stop two random people on the street, young or old, and ask them if they know Sade. Most likely, they’ll wrinkle their noses with the effort of puzzled contemplation. But the minute you sing or even tunelessly hum something like Smooth Operator or Your Love Is Big, you’ll see a happy knowing smile. You absolutely cannot remain indifferent to her songs. In the eighties they seems bold and modern to some, were a backdrop to first love for others, and some just enjoyed them on the
