One Year Guarantee!

Professional Bull Buyers Guide

Bulls Sale Starts at 1:00 PM.

Contacts

Leachman Cattle of Colorado is offering a one year guarantee on all bulls that we sell. This guarantee will cover your purchased bull(s) against death, injury, infertility, and loss of use. If, during the first year from purchase, you lose the use of your Leachman bull for whatever reason, we will give you a full credit towards the purchase of a new bull. We only ask that your herd veterinarian provide a written statement describing the death, injury, or infertility. If the bull in question can be salvaged, we would like you to keep the salvage value, and a credit will be issued, less the salvage amount you receive for the bull. If the bull completes a full breeding season, then the credit will be given at 75% of the original purchase value (less any salvage value). All claims must be made within 1 year from the date of purchase. Example 1: Your $5,000 bull dies before you turn him out to breed. You receive a full credit of $5,000. (Purchase Price - $0 Salvage - $0 Use). Example 2: Your $5,000 bull injures his scrotum after you pull him from the cows. You sell him for $1000 in salvage. You receive a credit of $2,750 ($5000 purchase - $1000 salvage - $1250 usage). Requirements for claims: 1.

All claims must be made within 365 days of purchase.

2.

A veterinary statement regarding the circumstances is required.

3.

A Verbal agreement from Leachman Cattle of Colorado is required prior to a bull being sold for salvage. Documentation of the salvage value of the bull, including identification of the bull on the sale barn ticket, that corresponds to the bulls Leachman identifications (ear tag or metal clip) is also required.

This credit can be used for the purchase of bulls, females, semen, and/or embryos from Leachman Cattle of Colorado. If the credit is not used within 24 months of the date of issuance, then it will expire.

How to read this catalog

1. Reg#: the registration number of the animal. NotReg means the animal is not registered. Pending means that a registration number has been applied for, but was not issued at the time of catalog printing. 2. Brd: breed of the animal if two breeds or less are involved. If more than two breeds are in the animal, then the composition shows the percent British and the percent Continental, i.e. 58B 42C means 58% British and 42% Continental. 3. DOB: date of birth 4. Color: BLK = black, BWF = black white face, BRC = black red carrier, RED = red, RWF = red white face, WHT = white. 5. Mating type: E = embryo transplant, A = via artificial insemination, N = natural service 6. Sex: B = Bull, H = Female

7. P = polled. S = scurred. H = horned. 8. Cooperator herd where the bull was raised. 9. Pen where the bull is located. 10. Genetic Defect codes - a C appended to the end denotes carrier and an F denotes tested free and P denotes possible but untested. NH - Neuropathic Hydrocephalus AM - Arthrogryposis Multiplex CA - Contractural Arachnodactyly OS - Osteopetrosis DD -Developmental Duplication Phenotype Scores to Make Bull Buying Easier: 11. C. Ease: Calving Ease is the predicted calving ease if you use the bull on heifers. If there is a number in the brown box, this indicates the breed calculated calving ease direct EPD. In addition, we provide our Leachman estimated calving star system.

***** The easiest calving bulls in the industry. **** Use on smaller heifers with minimal assistance needed *** Use on larger heifers with some assistance expected.

12. Growth: This is a score from one star to five stars, where five stars means maximum growth. Even the one star bulls are as growthy as any bull in America 20 years ago. 13 . Maternal: This is an estimate of maternal efficiency, NOT milk. It includes cow size, milk, fertility, and growth. The bulls are scored from one star to five stars. Five star bulls will produce some of the most profitable cows in the industry if you sell calves at weaning. 14. Feedlot: This looks at all of the post weaning traits including gain, conversion, carcass weight, and carcass merit. Scored from one star to five stars, where five stars would produce maximum overall value in your feeder calves. 15. Phenotype: A combination of eye appeal and overall kind. Scored from one star to five stars. Five star bulls are the best phenotypic bulls in the sale (in our opinion)! Two star bulls are less attractive visually than average. 16. Disposition: Our traditional score of 1 – 5 on disposition. Score 5 bulls are bulls you can walk up to and touch. Score 3 is about average historically for Leachman bulls. However, we are making a concerted effort to improve disposition, so most bulls score 3 or higher. The bulls scored 2.5 or 2 are nervous and do not like to be in close quarters with people on foot – but they are great for big range operations. 17. Actual birth weight. This is not adjusted for age of the dam. EPDs/ABCs Breed Association EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) are listed for all registered animals. Leachman ABCs (Across Breed Comparisons) are listed for all un-registered animals. All ABCs are on an Angus base and can be compared across breeds within this catalog. EPDs are appropriate association EPDs without any adjustments. 18. Birth weight EPD/ABC expressed on an Angus scale (or breed scale for Red Angus, Hereford, and Charolais). (970) 568-3983

19. Weaning weight EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale. 20. Yearling EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale. 21. Milk EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale. This is the best predictor of a bull’s daughter’s ability to milk. It measures the difference in weaning weight that will be produced between one bull’s daughters and another bull’s daughters due solely to milk. 22. IMF is the ultrasound based EPD/ABC for marbling expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale. 23. REA is the ultrasound based EPD/ABC for ribeye area expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale. 24. MWT is the predicted mature weight of daughters that you will get if you use the bull on a 1250 pound cow. If your cows weigh 1350, add 100 to this predicted weight. If your cows weigh only 1150, subtract 100 from this predicted weight. This EPD is the best indicator of daughter size -- far better than frame score or yearling height. 25. F:G is the pedigree estimated feed to gain EPD that predicts the feedlot efficiency of the bulls offspring. A negative number means that the bull’s progeny will feed more efficiently. Example: -0.50 means that the bulls progeny will require ½ pound less feed per pound of gain. 26. Intake: is an estimate of the amount of feed that the bull’s progeny will consume over a 112 day feeding period. It is expressed in pounds. Animals with higher intake will consume more throughout their life. Animals with lower intake will consume less. 27. FS is an EPD, expressed as frame score, predicting the yearling frame score of a sire’s progeny, compared to that of other sires. 28. SC is an EPD, expressed in centimeters, predicting the yearling scrotal circumference of a sire’s progeny, compared to that of other sires. 29. $Ranch EPD: This Leachman profit index that predicts weaning profitability based on calving ease, weaning weight, maternal milk, cow cost, and FERTILITY. Based on producing 100 calves. This EPD assumes a slide on calf prices of $10 / cwt. 30. $Feeder: This number is expressed in terms of the bull’s added value to the sale price of your feeder calves. It is expressed in dollars per head. Thus when comparing a +100 bull vs. a +50 bull, we expect the first bull to sire calves worth $50 per head more at weaning (regardless of their weight). 31. $Profit™ EPD: One, simple, proven number that gives each trait a weight according to its impact on profit. See page 2 for additional information. 32. FT: Indicates the bull was individually measured for feed intake. Bulls without this notation, were not individually measured. Unmeasured bulls have EPD’s based on their parental average. Page 1

$PROFIT

TM

Are all small cows really efficient? There seems to be a big disconnect in today’s beef industry.

On sale day we want heavy, high quality steers to pay the bills. The rest of the time we want efficient cows to keep our costs as low as possible. Simply selecting for smaller cows with no regard for feed efficiency is not the answer. Likewise, selecting for shear growth with disregard for cost is just as poor of a strategy. The best way to make your cowherd truly efficient, and your calf crop earn more, is to use Leachman $Profit™. This is the only index in the industry that works on both sides of the ledger (production AND cost). Cows that work! Steers that pay!

How $Profit works:

$Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will have 100 progeny over its lifetime. The model assumes that you keep 30% of your heifers as replacements and that you retain ownership on the remainder of the calves through finishing and sell on a grid. We realize that many don’t retain ownership, but doesn’t it make the most sense to select from birth all the way to slaughter? Feedlots have already proven their willingness to pay premiums for superior Leachman sired calves.

Our simulation model then factors in all of the effects on both income and expense to come up with a net profit figure for each bull. $Profit allows you to compare any two bulls and calculate the difference in profit that they are expected to generate in your herd. Let’s compare a $10,000 $Profit bull to $6,000 $Profit bull (the average 2008 born Angus bull). The predicted difference between the bulls is $4,000 or about $40 per calf. $Profit works for us and it will work for you too.

What traits are included in $Profit:

$Profit includes nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The effect of most traits on profit is fairly simple to understand. Here is the list of what is included and its effect: Revenue Traits ▪▪ Calving ease = more calves ▪▪ Weaning and Yearling EPD = more weight ▪▪ Fertility (days to conception) = more weight and more calves ▪▪ Carcass weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. ▪▪ Marbling = valued based on grid premiums ▪▪ Ribeye area = value as impacts yield grade ▪▪ % Retail Product = more yield is more meat Cost Traits ▪▪ Cow mature size = in general bigger eats more ▪▪ Cow intake = more intake costs more ▪▪ Feedlot feed efficiency = cost of gain Some traits are not so easily characterized for $Profit. Milk, for example, is a good thing until you get too much. When over +25, milk EPD has a more negative effect on fertility than it has a positive effect on weaning weight. There are a few traits not yet included in $Profit: longevity, structure, and disposition. These traits are important but difficult to express in dollars.

Star System Explained:

Accuracy: The sire’s level of accuracy is determined by the number of progeny that have been evaluated in the Leachman System.  Several progeny recorded, use with confidence (over 90% accurate).  Pedigree and individual data only (about 30% accurate). Calving Ease: The predicted calving ease if you use the bull on heifers.  The easiest calving bulls in the industry.  Use on smaller heifers with minimal assistance needed.  Use on larger heifers with some assistance expected. (If no stars are shown, the animal is recommended for use on cows only.)

Good Better Best

qqq qqqq qqqqq

Growth: A formula combines WW and YW to predict how much performance the sire will pass on to their progeny.  Most growth. Maternal: An estimate of the maternal efficiency of the daughters this sire will produce. It includes cow size, milk, fertility and growth.  Keep these heifers! They will make the most profitable females in the business. Feed/Carc: A formula that combines: gain, conversion, carcass weight and carcass merit to predict post weaning performance.  Maximum overall value in your feeder calves. Disposition: An observation of the sire’s disposition.  You can walk up to and touch.  Average - respects flight zones and handles well, but is not a pet.  Nervous. Page 2

Across Breed Comparisons

Dare to compare: You cannot afford to make mistakes in your breeding program! Choosing to use sires with incomplete or low value data can unknowingly make your herd less profitable – same work, same cost, poor results - unacceptable. Leachman ABC’s are the most reliable and comprehensive EPD’s in the industry. They are backed by a large (nearly a million), long-standing (over 30 years), multi-breed (over 15 breeds) database. Using this system assures you of making sound breeding decisions with minimal risk of failure.

$Profit is working from our pastures all the way to the rail! “We are excited about the changes we see in the cow herd and then the results we get in the feedlot. Our culls are grading 100% choice and 40% or better high choice and up. This earns us premiums. We now have a bunch of our Leachman A.I. customers feeding at Lincoln County Feed Yard. They see the potential to capture premiums all the way to the rail. They invested in our genetics and want to realize the greater profits that top genetics can generate. ~ Sam Rempe Rempe Farms Superior, NE

Our cattle set high standards! Our herd is efficient, high grading, and high yielding – but the cows still produce on extensive Wyoming, native range land. Our cull yearling heifers were finished at Lincoln County and sold on the rail. They have the flexibility to optimize heavier carcass weights and premium quality grades without excessive yield grade 4’s and 5’s. ~ Mike Healy L U Ranch Worland, WY

All pictured heifers were finished in Dec/Jan. These maternal genetics will compete in the yard, and on the rail, with the very best terminal genetics in the breed. You can have your cake and eat it too!

Earning $150 Premiums!

After picking their replacements, L U sends their backgrounded heifer calves to Torrington Livestock for sale each winter. The barn sorts off the fanciest load of heifers and they sell as replacements. The sale report, below, shows the sale results. The LU heifers outsold the market by well over $20/cwt. The future of the cattle industry will belong to operations who can operate at low cost AND earn big premiums for the cattle they produce!

“We are committed to continuous improvement! We are forging ahead with plans to install individidual feed consumption bunks. We hope to build upon the measured efficiency research that LCoC has pioneered. We feel that this is our way of giving back to both our customers as well as to the industry. I am sure we will all learn a lot in the process, both about the genetics, and about how best to manage the cattle here in the feedlot. ~ Steve Scholz, Owner Lincoln County Feed Yard North Platte, NE

Steve Scholz is always trying to learn how to breed better cattle. In 2017, he wanted to compare AI sired calves by Leachman Prophet to cleanup calves sired Leachman Charolais bulls (see the calves pictured below by Prophet and the Charolais on the right side of the page). The Charolais had a 19 pound advantage on carcass weight and a half a pound advantage on conversion. However, the Prophet calves marbled significantly higher earning just under a $5/cwt advantage in the meat. The test proved that maternal Stabilizer genetics could run with the top terminal bulls - and you can keep the daughters.

“I am amazed by the results we are seeing here at Lincoln County Feed Yard! We have had exponential growth in the last 4 years, both in terms of capacity of business, and in our learning curve of markets, genetics, and the pursuit of value added. It is VERY clear to us that our success is a direct result of the success of our customers!

We ARE in a global market. Things are going to move very fast in the next 5 years. Our customers do not want to be caught in the “no passing” zone. It will be our job to provide more services and a system that is simple to use to keep them moving forward. I am amazed at the results we have seen within this system today. I also firmly believe that this is just the beginning. Our customers are in vigorous pursuit of the best tools available to achieve financial gain while providing a high quality product for the markets available today and in the future.” ~ Kevin Unger Resource Manager Lincoln County Feed Yard

Leachman Cattle of Colorado is fortunate to have found Lincoln County Feed Yard. Despite their large volume, the attention to detail at the lot is unmatched. Pens are scraped continuously. Rations are mixed diligently and delivered with precision. The feedlot is well run, aesthetically pleasing, and cost effective. We take our hats off to Steve, Kevin, and the whole crew at LCFY.

Cows that work– to keep the next generation in business! “The sixth generation, my boys, are home and are very involved in the business. Their wives help too. We want to make sure that there is a place for the seventh generation if they want to be here on the land. That’s why we have grown the herd from 400 cows to over 800 cows in the last ten years. We’ve been cooperating with Leachman’s for twenty-two years. The Leachman Cooperator program is the best value added program we have found for our operation.” ~ Chris Grubl Alkali Ranch Sturgis, SD The Grubl family celebrated 125 continuous years on their Grubl Alkali Ranch, east of Sturgis, SD. Leachman Stabilizers – 30 years in the making! • Built on Science: First designed in the 1970’s by USDA ARS scientists at the Meat Animal Research Center as the Marc II composite: ¼ Red Angus, ¼ Hereford, ¼ Simmental, ¼ Gelbvieh. • Privatized: A private herd was developed by Pat Vinton, Gordon, NE and later sold to the Tessari family in Babb, MT – thus becoming the foundation for the Leachman Stabilizer herd. • Modernized: From 1988 – 2003, Leachman modernized the Stabilizer composite: ▪ Reduced the birth weight. ▪ Made the cattle solid colored and polled. ▪ Increased the post weaning gain.

▪ Improved convenience traits including

disposition and udder quality. ▪ Introduced black lines in addition to the original red lines. ▪ Injected top hybrid and purebred sires form the Angus, Simmental, and Gelbvieh breeds. • Moved to Colorado: In 2003, Leachman Cattle of Colorado was formed with a nucleus of cooperators that included the Tessari herd and several other Stabilizer cooperators. • Selected with $Profit: LCoC began selecting the Stabilizer using $Profit with significant results: ▪ Dramatic further reduction in birth weight while increasing yearling growth. ▪ Significant improvement on marbling to now exceed average marbling Angus cattle. ▪ Substantial selection for reduced feed intake and improved feed efficiency. ▪ All of which coincided with a huge annual progress on $Profit. • Expanded Internationally: In 2016, Leachman offered genetic analysis services to Stabilizer breeders in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. This expansion increased the total Stabilizer herd being selected for $Profit to over 20,000 breeding females. Genetics are now flowing to and from each of these herds – increasing the rate of global selection improvement.

Excerpts from a 2001 letter written by Dr. Keith Gregory, Research Geneticist at U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) to Jim Leachman: “Your contributions to beef cattle breeding are unmatched in the history of beef cattle breeding. No one has had a greater impact on beef cattle breeding on a global basis. I have stated on several occasions that no one is implementing more of the available beef cattle breeding technology than Leachman Cattle Company.” Page 12

ALL ANIMALS OFFERED ARE SUBJECT TO PRIOR SALE AND PRICE CHANGES. EXCEPT FOR THOSE STATED IN THE BELOW TERMS AND CONDITIONS, THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AS TO MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE CATTLE BEING SOLD IN THIS OFFERING. THE WARRANTIES AND GUARANTEES SET FORTH IN THESE “TERMS AND CONDITIONS” ARE IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AND THE REMEDIES PROVIDED THEREIN SHALL BE THE SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY OF THE BUYER, OR ANY PARTY CLAIMING THROUGH BUYER, FOR ANY BREACH OF WARRANTY OR GUARANTEE THEREIN PROVIDED, AND ALL OTHER OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITIES.

SALE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

TERMS: Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with the Seller prior to the sale. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the Purchaser as soon as sold. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for, free of charge to Purchaser, until loaded for shipment. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal unless said animal is unregistered as denoted in the catalog. HEALTH: All animals are eligible for interstate shipment; except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal requiring T.B., Bang’s, and other health testing in accordance with State and Federal Regulations. ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION SERVICE CERTIFICATES A.I. Service Certificates shall be furnished by the Seller, at no cost to the Buyer, for all females sold in the sale that are bred artificially to bulls not owned by the Seller. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Changes of information, of any kind, in this catalog will be announced from the auction block. Such announcements shall take precedence. BREEDING GUARANTEE 1. All animals are guaranteed breeders, with the exception of: a) calves under twelve months of age; b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale (in cases of animals shown after purchase, the breeding guarantee, if any, shall be such as agreed upon between Seller and Buyer; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser. 2. Bulls are guaranteed breeders if not allowed to run with the herd until at least 14 months of age. Any bull which either: 1) settles 1/3 or more of the healthy cows he serves; 2) is the sire of 20 or more animals; or 3) settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any 6 month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sale terms and conditions entitled “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment”) shall be considered a breeder. Any guarantees with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be by separate agreement between Buyer and Seller. “Safe in Calf” Females have been examined by a competent veterinarian and are so guaranteed. Pasture-bred Females have been exposed, but are not guaranteed to be in calf. Serviced females are believed to be in calf but are not so guaranteed. Open females have not been served and are so guaranteed. IDENTIFICATION: Seller offers each animal with a readable tattoo corresponding to its catalog designation and registration when applicable. OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage. 2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the Seller, if in good condition and in compliance with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the Seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the Seller shall, at the option of the Buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or grant the Buyer a credit for use on any products marketed by the Seller. Such credit of the full purchase price shall, in any case, be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expense incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. If the Seller proves the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the Purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses incurred for transportation.

purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller. Any adjustment provided for herein shall absolve the Seller from further liability, except in case such female proves to be a non-breeder. If a female represented as “safe in calf” at time of sale to a certain bull proves to have been bred to a different bull, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller (adjustments shall not be considered to be a breeding fee or an allocation of the purchase price to any unborn calf). Any expenses incurred for transportation shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. 4. If a female sold as “served” proves not to be in calf, or if a female sold as “pasture-bred” proves not to be in calf, the Seller only guarantees such female to be a breeder. 5. If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Purchaser may return the animal to the farm of the Seller prior to calving for a credit of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever is acceptable to the Purchaser. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation. GENETIC DEFECT AND PARENTAGE GUARANTEE 1. All animals are guaranteed not to produce a calf with the following defects: Dwarfism, Double-muscling, Parrot Mouth, Osteopetrosis (marble bone disease), and Syndactylism (mule foot), and Arthrogryposis Multiplex (curly calf). The parentage of all animals bred by the Seller is guaranteed to the extent that the animal is by the Sire and out of the Dam indicated on its registration paper. These guarantees are effective for a period of two years from date of sale only under the following conditions. a) The Buyer shall notify the Seller in writing immediately upon the birth of a calf suspected of being defective or immediately after determination is made that such calf is defective, or if parentage is suspected or found to be in error. b) The Seller, at his expense shall be permitted and provided, with reasonable opportunity, to obtain blood samples of an alleged defective calf and its sire and dam for the purpose of blood type/DNA analysis to establish parenthood. In the case of suspect parentage, the Buyer at his expense, shall be permitted and provided, with reasonable opportunity, to obtain blood samples of the animal in question and its sire and dam for the purpose of blood type/DNA analysis to establish parenthood. If sire or dam, as indicated on the animal’s registration paper, is proven to be in error by such analysis, the Seller shall reimburse Buyer for cost of such analysis. c) The animals will be returned by the Buyer to the Seller at the Buyer’s expense; provided the animal meets the health requirements for the Seller’s state. d) The replacement of an animal with another of equal value or the refund of the purchase price, in connection with a defect producing animal or an animal whose parentage is in error, shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. 2. In the event there is a dispute as to whether or not a calf is defective, or parentage is in error, “determination” referred to in Paragraph 1a above shall be made by a person or persons acceptable to both the Buyer and Seller. In the event that Buyer and Seller cannot agree on the selection of such person or persons, then each of them shall appoint a representative to make the determination. In the event that such representatives fail to agree, a third person selected by the representatives of the Buyer and Seller shall make the determination. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the Buyer and Seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction. Neither the sale manager, nor any other person connected with the management of the sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.

3. If a female sold as “safe in calf” proves not to be in calf, the Purchaser may receive service from the bull previously used, if available, or if the bull is not available, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the
