Breeder's Guide / Semen Directory
What will your cow herd look like in 10 years?
It's never too early to build your legacy!
Ranching Legacy 2030
™
Every rancher will leave a legacy. We would like the opportunity to help you build a cow herd that will give the next generation a leg up. That means building a herd that is more profitable through good markets and bad, through droughts and years of abundant moisture, and through changing markets – a cowherd that will stand the test of time. Whether this is your sunrise or sunset, the reponsibility for sound planning rests upon every generation.
At Leachman Cattle of Colorado, we have identified the following key strategies as part of our Ranching Legacy 2030™ plan: • Increase stocking rate with more efficient, high $Ranch™ cows. • Reduce turnover using Leachman’s new multibreed stayability EPD. (Available this spring!) • Pick superior $Profit replacements with the Inherit® DNA test from Zoetis. TM
• Increase the value of your feeder calves by selecting for Leachman $Feeder. • Accelerate your rate of improvement by using outlier bulls and semen. • Earn premiums on genetically superior replacements and feeder/fed cattle. • Put it all together with $Profit – the most complete financial index in the industry. TM
Today, we have the ability to improve cattle faster than ever. By starting this process today, you will gain a permanent advantage. Think of it like a runner who gets to start the mile race a lap ahead –no one will ever catch them! Herds that improve faster will build a comparative advantage over their neighbors. Literally, you will shift the odds of your financial success. The real profitability of your herd will be higher than average. You will earn more profit per acre and more profit per cow than the average herd. You will leave a more valuable herd to your children and grandchildren.

“In 2019 we had a Stabilizer sired pen of steers that graded 61% Prime and returned $168 premium, while their Stabilizer dams bred up at 95.5% in 60 days. Cows that work, steers that pay, sure fits our goals.” ~ Trace Walker Rolling Hills Ranch Salina, KS

Leachman Stabilizers –
An American Beef "Breed" Success Story • Built on Science: First designed in the 1970’s by USDA ARS scientists at the Meat Animal Research Center as the Marc II composite: ¼ Red Angus, ¼ Hereford, ¼ Simmental, ¼ Gelbvieh. • Privatized: A private herd was developed by Pat Vinton, Gordon, NE and later sold to the Tessari family in Babb, MT – thus becoming the foundation for the Leachman Stabilizer herd. • Modernized: From 1988 – 2003, Leachman modernized the Stabilizer composite: ▪ Reduced the birth weight. ▪ Made the cattle solid colored and polled. ▪ Increased the post weaning gain. ▪ Improved convenience traits including disposition and udder quality. ▪ Introduced black lines in addition to the original red lines. ▪ Injected top hybrid and purebred sires form the Angus, Simmental, and Gelbvieh breeds. • Moved to Colorado: In 2003, Leachman Cattle of Colorado was formed with a nucleus of cooperators that included the Tessari herd and several other Stabilizer cooperators. TM
• Selected with $Profit : LCoC began selecting the Stabilizer using $Profit with significant results: ▪ Dramatic further reduction in birth weight while increasing yearling growth. ▪ Significant improvement on marbling to now exceed average marbling Angus cattle. ▪ Substantial selection for reduced feed intake and improved feed efficiency. ▪ All of which coincided with a huge annual progress on $Profit. • Expanded Internationally: In 2016, Leachman offered genetic analysis services to Stabilizer breeders in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. This expansion increased the total Stabilizer herd being selected for $Profit to over 20,000 breeding females. Genetics are now flowing to and from each of these herds – increasing the rate of global selection improvement. • Enhanced by DNA: In 2020, we partnered with Zoetis to build the largest, most accurate, composite DNA database in the world. This nearly doubles the accuracy of yearling EPDs, allowing even more rapid genetic improvement. • Today: The most scientifically advanced, well identified, composite gene pool in the world.
Excerpts from a 2001 letter written by Dr. Keith Gregory, Research Geneticist at U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) to Jim Leachman: “Your contributions to beef cattle breeding are unmatched in the history of beef cattle breeding. No one has had a greater impact on beef cattle breeding on a global basis. I have stated on several occasions that no one is implementing more of the available beef cattle breeding technology than Leachman Cattle Company.” Dr. Keith Gregory Page 4
Is She a Good Cow?
A 1,250 lb. Top 1% $Ranch five-year-old Stabilizer cow calved at 23 months, has bred and calved in the first cycle four times with a 365 day calving interval, and has weaned an average of 698 lbs. per calf.
Most profit minded ranchers increasingly see the key to profitability as controlling costs while still increasing performance. For them, the key cow herd profitability factors are: • • • •
Moderating feed intake so you can run more cows on the same land. Improving longevity to reduce the costs of turnover and depreciation. Increasing fertility so that more cows bring in a calf every year. Adding hybrid vigor to increase pounds weaned per cow exposed.
Buying high growth, high carcass, purebred bulls that have been selected for maximum output will not build a low cost, high profit cowherd. • Leachman’s $Ranch index will move your herd in the right direction on all of these factors. • The $Profit index will help you improve your cows and make steers that earn premiums. • Using Leachman Stabilizers is the simplest crossbreeding strategy you can use: Retain 75% of the original F1 Hybrid vigor, while creating a uniform calf crop.

Semen $20, see discounts below. Doc is a big time growth bull with a huge ribeye! Conversion is the name of the game in the feed yard, and although the best solution to feed efficiency is to eat less and gain more, eating more and gaining A LOT more is also efficient. Leachman Cattle of Colorado is committed to helping ranchers reduce losses from brisket disease… and now possible feedlot respiratory death?? We know from our own cowherds that losing calves to brisket at any time from birth through yearling stage can have significant financial cost. We are convinced that pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) scores are very strong predictors of whether or not animals will have the disease. For this reason, we have collected over 6,278 PAP scores on cattle in our program.
We believe that the best strategy to reduce brisket disease is to use genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs) for PAP. Think of selecting for low birth weight. Just buying bulls under 80 pounds would help calving ease, but using low birth weight EPD bulls is a much more effective strategy. This is true, because an EPD takes into account much more information. For example, buying a 75 lb. BW bull out of a sire that generally sires very heavy calves is far less likely to be easy calving than is a similar BW bull out of a sire that generally sires light calves. The same is the case with PAP. Our PAP EPD closely relates to the actual PAP score of the bulls as shown in the graph below. The correlation between the PAP scores and the PAP EPDs are 85%. This is typical in a trait like PAP that is 30% heritable. However, as with all EPDs, you can see that some bulls score better or worse on the EPDs than on the actual score. Ranchers concerned with PAP scores should use the EPDs – not the actual PAP scores.
Key points to regarding PAP and PAP EPDs: • We have taken 6,278 PAP scores (all by Dr. Tim Holt). • PAP is 30% heritable. • The PAP EPDs reported were calculated by Zoetis. They include information related to the genomics of the bulls. This increases the accuracy of the prediction, even without a PAP test. • Selecting bulls using the PAP EPD is FAR more accurate than simply using the PAP scores. • Herds that have significant brisket disease should use the lowest PAP EPD bulls. -6

Unfortunately, taking measurements will not solve the problem. Most ranchers know that buying PAP tested bulls reduces the problems with brisket, but most still report losing 3% - 8% of their calves to brisket depending on the year. This level of calf loss is still unacceptable!
Could Leachman PAP EPDs help with respiratory death in the feedlot too? Research Looks at Congestive Heart Failure in Feedlot Cattle By Heather Smith Thomas
PAP EPD EXPLAINED
Some cattle at high elevations suffer pulmonary artery hypertension, which leads to congestive heart failure, but even more cattle are susceptible to bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF). This is showing up in feedlot cattle. BCHF is an untreatable, fatal condition involving pulmonary hypertension that culminates in right ventricular failure, but may begin with left-heart dysfunction. This makes it different from right heart failure at high altitudes because BCHF affects both sides of the heart. Dr. Milt Thomas, Department of Animal Science, Colorado State University says the heart problem at high altitudes occurs much earlier in the animal’s life, while BCHF generally occurs in the finishing phase in the feedlot. “We’re doing a USDA-funded project to try to understand feedlot heart disease. We have a feedlot facility in Akron, Colorado (4100 feet elevation) called ECRC (Eastern Colorado Research Center) and a client who feeds 500-plus commercial
Page 36
Angus-type steers there every year, with high incidence of feedlot heart disease. That client allowed us to buy 107 steers for our research project,” says Thomas. “We treated those steers like any other steers in the feedlot, and have now taken them to slaughter, and have our initial data—and found feedlot heart disease,” he says. “With those steers, like we do with high altitude cattle, we did PAP (pulmonary arterial pressure) testing, to know which ones were tolerating the process of getting fat and which ones were not. These steers had never been above 6000 feet elevation but we found a lot of high-PAP cattle. There were so many that we created a high-PAP and a low-PAP group and brought them to the Fort Collins facility to study, evaluating their feed intake in the Grow-Safe Feed Intake Unit,” he says. “Out of those 107 steers, death loss was 5.5% which is very high. One calf died early in the feeding phase—which may have been related to stress of shipping fever. All the others, however, died late in the feeding period when they should have been past the early risks, and they all died from feedlot heart disease.” After the feeding period, the high-PAP and low-PAP steers were slaughtered at the Global Food Innovation Center (GFIC) on the CSU campus. “Even though some of them died, we still had 12 high-PAP and 12 low-PAP steers that we slaughtered and we are studying their heart and lung tissues and other performance data,” says Thomas. “All the low-PAP animals had
some correlations between obesity and heart disease. If you take an animal that already has fairly high PAP and include some of the issues that arise from fattening, you will see more heart failures,” he says. “We still have a lot to learn about this, but cattle in general are sensitive to hypertension. Anything that stresses them could be a problem, and you will probably find examples of higher death loss. There are many things that stress cattle as we grow them, and any of those stresses could possibly lead to this,” he says. So what can we do? The first thing to find out is why it happens. Some people wonder if it’s the kind of feed, the amount of gain, or the breed. “I think we can say that it is none of the above and all of the above. There are many factors and not just any one big cause,” says Thomas. For a feedlot producer, or any cow-calf producer retaining ownership through the feeding phase, it is crucial to know more about this. The researchers at CSU have done collaborative research with USMARC in Nebraska. “This new study is very important because none of these steers at the Akron feedlot were ever at high altitude. Many people still have the misconception that this is just a high-altitude disease. The majority of cattle that come to feedlots, however, have never been at
Page 37
PAP EPD EXPLAINED
normal-looking hearts and the high-PAP steers had severely malformed hearts. These were the steers that made it to slaughter; it doesn’t count the ones that died. All the steers that died in the late feeding period had severely malformed hearts,” he says. “With feedlot heart disease, sometimes we see cattle don’t make it all the way to slaughter; they perish near the end of the finishing phase--and these are expensive losses. One hypothesis is that some of these cattle are highly stressed by fattening because they are high-PAP cattle, and when they get a secondary challenge like respiratory disease, it pushes them over the edge,” he says. “At this point we’ve still in the early stages of our research, but the high-PAP steers had poor average daily gain in the final phases of feeding and their feed conversion was terrible. By contrast, the low-PAP steers had very good average daily gain, very good feed conversion, etc. It was obvious that the closer we got to finishing, the more the feedlot performance declined on the high-PAP steers,” he explains. This makes sense, because if cattle don’t feel well, they don’t eat well. Some people wonder if this problem is occurring because we’ve selected cattle for traits like fast growth and easy fattening. “The only way we can really know would be to find some old semen resources and create some 1950-era cattle to compare with today’s cattle,” he says. “In general, cattle have very high PAP relative to other animals and humans. We find this problem in every breed but there are some genetic differences at least in the high-altitude problem—some breeds and some family lines within breeds are less susceptible. In general, cattle have high PAP, however, so anything that stresses them could be a problem. If an animal in the feeding period has respiratory disease or heat stress, this makes it more difficult for them to handle.” Summer heat is a big one. “Hot weather exacerbates the problem, at least in our observations. In general, there are

high altitude. Greta Krafsur, DVM is a pathologist who made congestive heart failure in feedlot cattle the subject of her PhD dissertation research. She is now assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at South Dakota State University and also employed by the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz School of Medicine Cardiovascular Pulmonary Research Lab where she works alongside human physicians whose expertise in pulmonary hypertension and heart disease have influenced her thinking regarding the complex problem of bovine congestive heart failure. For the past several years she’s been working with Milt Thomas. “I am a pathologist so I was in charge of the tissue harvest to make sure we got all the tissues needed for this study. We have many different collaborators in this research, with many interests in different pieces and parts. We are not only collecting tissues for the cattle industry but also for human medicine,” says Krafsur. I’m now in the process of trimming all of them so they can go to the lab to be made into slides. I also collected fat from around the heart, as well as visceral abdominal fat, and now analyzing the proteomic, metabalomic and lipidomic signatures, because I suspect that these cattle have a unique inflammatory metabolic condition. The ones that go on to develop pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure have this unique signature that is pro-inflammatory. They go to glycolytic metabolism and also tend to have a lot of heart fat. Fat is wonderful, as long as it is healthy. I think the cattle that suffer
Page 38
from this condition have a genetic variance when it comes to how lipids are trafficked and how they are metabolized,” she says. “We put such a high premium on marbling, and some of these hearts are well marbled—but this is not where we need the marbling! My research is specifically looking at the influence of the heart fat and inflammation in the heart. Is this what is setting these cattle up for this problem? This question is where I have directed my efforts.” She recently finished analyzing tissues from another group of cattle that had sequential right-heart catheterizations between 2016 and 2018. “Once all the tissues from all of these USDA grant cattle are completed I will start analyzing those. We have looked at grass-fattened animals versus grain-fed animals and microscopically the grass-fat cattle’s hearts do not look any healthier than the corn-fed conventionally fattened animals. Many people think these problems are due to what we feed them and the way we feed them, but I am not sure,” says Krafsur. It may be a small factor, but the animal’s own metabolism may be the bigger key. “I have done a lot of work with researchers at the Genetics, Breeding, and Animal Health Research Unit at the USDA, ARS, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska, and at the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center at Clay Center, and Dale Grotelueschen (University of Nebraska), and they say that this problem is now happening earlier and earlier in the feeding period, with
PAP EPD EXPLAINED
the cattle they have studied. In this last group of cattle that we did with our USDA grant, I would agree,” she says. If these animals could be pinpointed earlier, they could be taken out of that program and managed differently. They might be fed differently and slaughtered earlier. “I am trying to develop a mechanistic understanding of what’s going on with them, but at the same time I am trying to verify certain biomarkers that are used in the human medical population to classify and predict human heart failure with pulmonary hypertension patients. A couple of biomarkers that are very prognostic with humans, I have found to be significantly different in cattle that develop pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure. These look like promising biomarkers that we could also use in cattle—where we could just take blood samples and measure them,” she says. “Unhealthy fat is very pro-inflammatory, and sets up an environment for fibrosis in the heart, and more inflammation. I believe that some of these genes have something to do with lipid metabolism and signaling. It has been shown time and time again in human patients with congestive heart failure that many of them go on to develop pulmonary hypertension and ultimately right heart failure. Those patients do worse than any other class of pulmonary hypertension patients. It’s been shown that the heart fat is a key player in the whole complex pathophysiology of that disease. I need to look at this in the cattle and see if it is or is not a similar issue.” Although management and feeding regimens in feedlots are similar across the industry, there is a subset of cattle that develop BCHF for reasons unknown. “My instincts tell me that some cattle do not respond favorably to the high demands imposed by excess calories, aggressive growth and fat body condition during the feeding and fattening phase of the production cycle. This subset of cattle seem to experience systemic inflammation and metabolic and lipid dysfunction that lead to cardiopulmonary remodeling and dysfunction. This condition is invariably fatal and there is an urgent need to find biomarkers predictive of disease that can be used to assess risk and inform management decisions,” she says. Why do we see this problem in the feed yard but not in adult cows and bulls? Is this because we are not pushing them to grow so fast? Mature cattle are getting bigger (larger frame
size than several decades ago) and yet we are not seeing BCHF (except for high altitude disease in certain bloodlines). Perhaps it is because we are developing heifers and bulls more slowly— for longevity rather than swift fattening for slaughter--but we really don’t know. “There may be multiple factors. Perhaps there is an underlying genetic problem, and certain things about the environment—what we feed and how we feed them—and when the two come together there may be a subset of cattle that don’t respond favorably. Under different conditions you might never see the problem,” she says.

TM
Are all small cows really efficient? There seems to be a big disconnect in today’s beef industry. On sale day we want heavy, high quality steers to pay the bills. The rest of the time we want efficient cows to keep our costs as low as possible. Simply selecting for smaller cows with no regard for feed efficiency is not the answer. Likewise, selecting for shear growth with disregard for cost is just as poor of a strategy. The best way to make your cowherd truly efficient, and your calf crop earn more, is to use Leachman $Profit™. This is the only index in the industry that works on both sides of the ledger (production AND cost). Cows that work! Steers that pay! DATA EXPLAINED
How $Profit works:
What traits are included in $Profit:
Our simulation model then factors in all of the effects on both income and expense to come up with a net profit figure for each bull. $Profit allows you to compare any two bulls and calculate the difference in profit that they are expected to generate in your herd. Let’s compare a $10,000 $Profit bull to $6,000 $Profit bull (the average 2008 born Angus bull). The predicted difference between the bulls is $4,000 or about $40 per calf. $Profit works for us and it will work for you too.
Some traits are not so easily characterized for $Profit. Milk, for example, is a good thing until you get too much. When over +25, milk EPD has a more negative effect on fertility than it has a positive effect on weaning weight. There are a few traits not yet included in $Profit: longevity, structure, and disposition. These traits are important but difficult to express in dollars.
$Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will have 100 progeny over its lifetime. The model assumes that you keep 30% of your heifers as replacements and that you retain ownership on the remainder of the calves through finishing and sell on a grid. We realize that many don’t retain ownership, but doesn’t it make the most sense to select from birth all the way to slaughter? Feedlots have already proven their willingness to pay premiums for superior Leachman sired calves.
$Profit includes nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The effect of most traits on profit is fairly simple to understand. Here is the list of what is included and its effect: Revenue Traits ▪ Calving ease = more calves ▪ Weaning and yearling EPD = more weight ▪ Fertility (days to conception) = more weight and more calves ▪ Carcass weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. ▪ Marbling = valued based on grid premiums ▪ Ribeye area = value as impacts yield grade ▪ % Retail Product = more yield is more meat Cost Traits ▪ Cow mature size = in general bigger eats more ▪ Cow intake = more intake costs more ▪ Feedlot feed efficiency = cost of gain
Star System Explained:
Accuracy: The sire’s level of accuracy is determined by the number of progeny that have been evaluated in the Leachman System. Several progeny recorded, use with confidence (over 90% accurate). Pedigree and individual data only (about 30% accurate). Calving Ease: The predicted calving ease if you use the bull on heifers. The easiest calving bulls in the industry. Use on smaller heifers with minimal assistance needed. Use on larger heifers with some assistance expected. (If no stars are shown, the animal is recommended for use on cows only.)
Good Better Best
qqq qqqq qqqqq
Growth: A formula combines WW and YW to predict how much performance the sire will pass on to their progeny. Most growth. Maternal: An estimate of the maternal efficiency of the daughters this sire will produce. It includes cow size, milk, fertility and growth. Keep these heifers! They will make the most profitable females in the business. Feed/Carc: A formula that combines: gain, conversion, carcass weight and carcass merit to predict post weaning performance. Maximum overall value in your feeder calves. Disposition: An observation of the sires disposition. You can walk up to and touch. Average - respects flight zones and handles well, but is not a pet. Across Breed Comparisons
Dare to compare: You cannot afford to make mistakes in your breeding program! Choosing to use sires with incomplete or low value data can unknowingly make your herd less profitable – same work, same cost, poor results - unacceptable. Leachman ABC’s are the most reliable and comprehensive EPD’s in the industry. They are backed by a large (nearly a million), long-standing (over 30 years), multi-breed (over 15 breeds) database. Using this system assures you of making sound breeding decisions with minimal risk of failure.

SIRE SUMMARY
All EPDs Shown are from the Leachman Zoetis $Profit Analysis
Leachman Angus are Held to a High Standard!
ANGUS
At Leachman Cattle, we have an 84 year tradition of holding our Angus to a high standard! • A 3-generation legacy of master breeders in the Angus breed. • We have bred and/or owned many of the breed’s greatest sires: ▪ Homeplace Eileenmere 995 35 ▪ Ankonian President
▪ Ankonian Jingo 2 ▪ Emulation 31
▪ Leachman Saugahatchee ▪ Bon View New Design 1407
▪ Bon View New Design 878 ▪ Leachman New Standard
▪ GAR-EGL Protégé ▪ TCA Visionary 158
• We have consistently been on the leading edge of genetic improvement in the Angus breed!
Today, Angus stands at a crossroads. The breed has clearly established itself as THE DOMINANT breed in the United States. However, many breeders are uncertain about the future direction of the breed. Here is where we see Angus in 10 years: 1. The breed must reverse its current trend towards bigger, taller, higher intake females. 2. The breed must develop a prediction, like $Ranch, that will improve the maternal efficiency of Angus cows.
4. The breed must select for improved feed efficiency – by actively measuring feed conversion on bulls.
BREED AVERAGE
3. The breed must select for improved health – namely respiratory disease and heart failure.
At Leachman Cattle, we don’t just talk the talk on profitability – we walk the walk! Leachman bulls produce calves with $80 more per head vs the average Angus bull! Page 46

Foundation produces cattle that can efficiently convert until they grade prime! On top of this, he receives a perfect 5-star rating for phenotype. His dam is
WW YW
a top producing female with a 106 NR and a nearly picture perfect udder at seven years of age. She has produced multiple top sons and replacement heifers while maintaining a 365 day calving interval.
Foundation’s performance records post the following: 80 BW, 117 WR, 111 YR, 16.0 ACT REA, .39 Rib Fat, .27 Rump Fat, 7.17 Pct IMF and at just 1,175 pounds! You will be hard pressed to find another bull in the entire breed with a more complete EPD profile as Foundation’s! Interestingly, had we set his EPDs aside, Foundation would still have been our top herd bull pick based on type and kind. He is an extremely long, thick-made bull with tremendous feet and udder qualities. This rare physical/financial combination leads us to believe that this is one of the very top sires in the breed!

Visionary as a 6 year old. He looks good from every angle!
We have purchased and raised many great Angus bulls over the years. No, not all of them turn out the way we hope, in-fact very few of them become breed leaders. I can truly say with full confidence that Visionary does belong on our leader board.

It is our thought that Oracle is one of the very most complete sires in the Red Angus breed! Breeders across the country
WW
"Oracle is so much more than just a carcass bull as he exhibits amazing growth, combined with excellent calving ease and stayability. What is so exciting is to see this much carcass merit in an animal that has such a deep pedigree for producing outstanding daughters."
agree with this statement, as Oracle had the highest amount of progeny recorded in 2019. His first set of sons were met with enthusiastic acceptance in 2018. Breeders report that they are sound and attractive with good dimension. We are very impressed with his daughters as well! They possess the femininity and fleshing ability that leads us to believe that they should be at the forefront of the breed’s maternal reputation.

Not only does Real Deal look good on paper, but he is also smooth made with good feet and a great disposition. He sires progeny that are moderate framed, big barreled, and square hipped. He will build moderate mature females in the mold of EBV, but with added type and kind.

Leachman Elite Heat Tolerant Sires Here at Leachman’s we have a long standing commitment to building into our gene pool “specific trait” values for cattlemen that must focus on special management and environmental challenges. Whether it is our “at altitude” research work on low PAP sires for our high country ranchers or the development of “profit-driven” heat tolerant genetics for our southern and international breeders, we are working hard to make your operation MORE $Profitable! Leachmans has experience with blending heat tolerant breeds. In 1987, Jim and Lee Leachman worked with King Ranch to design their Santa Cruz cattle (Santa Gertrudis x Gelbvieh/Red Angus). In 1993, Leachman’s started a program in Brazil called the Montana composite that mated over 50,000 Nelore and F1 Nelore x cattle to form a tropically adapted composite program. The Montana program later expanded into Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. In addition, Lee has closely studied a variety of crossbreeding programs in tropical and subtropical environments including Florida, South Africa, and Australia.

There is no doubt that our $ProfitTM system is working. I see rapid, continuous improvement in the bulls we produce, in our seedstock cowherds, in the herds of the other seedstock producers using $Profit, and in the herds of our commercial customers. I urge you to try semen on these top bulls – it is the quickest and easiest way to see for yourself the significant results that come from selecting with $Profit.
Lee Leachman Partner/Owner
How are we changing herds?
• The cows are getting more moderate and have less feed requirements. They are breeding back easier and raising great calves.
• The feeder calves are high gainers in the feedlot and they beat the competition with over $0.05 / pound savings on feed cost. Plus, they reach heavy market weights without an excess of yield grade fours. • The carcass quality and yield is unprecedented. We are producing some of the heaviest muscled calves in the industry – while still grading over 95% Choice and over 50% CAB and higher. In fact, many groups are grading over 30% Prime! Simply put, the combination of traits that come from selection Now we are doing all of this more for $Profit is putting more money into our customer’s pockets! We hope we can earn your business this breeding season. There is arguably no faster or more efficient way to capture extra value from your cow herd than to AI to proven top $Profit sires and use sons of these elite bulls for natural service. I know this first-hand, because my family implements these strategies – and they work! As the Semen Cooperative Manager, my goal is for this system to provide: • Trouble free delivery of high quality semen. • Semen and bull selection assistance from reps that know these bulls because they use these bulls. • Professional synchronization and custom AI options. • Marketing strategy assistance for the resulting calves. Invest in these elite herd sires with confidence!

accurately and with less risk with Zoetis DNA enhanced EPDs.
Points to Consider: • Genetics affect nearly everything on a cattle operation in some way. • Progressive ranchers really need to find a way to use the most profitable genetics available. • AI is many times the most affordable way to access truly superior sires--- using the wrong AI sire is a considerable waste of time, money and resources. • Using sons of the elite sires is the next best option. • It has been amazing to me how much our high $Profit sires can positively change the bottom line on nearly any operation. • Unique to most semen sales companies, we breed, test, evaluate and use our AI sires. • LCoC “tools of the trade”– Across Breed EPDs, ultrasound, feed-efficiency testing, $Ranch, $Feeder and $Profit Financial Indexes and now Zoetis enhanced DNA – Can you afford not to know? On behalf of the Leachman Rep Team and Staff, we look forward to serving you in 2021. Please feel free to contact us anytime. Best Regards,
