FALL PROTECTION & HEIGHT SAFETY Restraint (Fall Prevention) What is restraint? The use of a fall protection equipment to restrain / prevent an operator from getting into a position where a fall could occur. E.g. By wearing an appropriate harness or belt and a fixed length lanyard attached to an anchor point, an operator could be able to work right up to the edge but not go far enough to fall.

Work Positioning This is the use of additional equipment to hold an operator in a suitable position for work. E.g. A belt and pole strap may be worn by a telephone mast engineer in addition to his fall arrest equipment. Leach’s have many special work positioning harness and accessories available to provide for both fall protection and work positioning needs.

Rescue Requirements Whenever fall arrest equipment is in use there must be a rescue plan and equipment on site to carry it out quickly and effectively. IT IS NOT PERMISSIBLE TO RELY ON THE EMERGENCY SERVICES A SPECIFIC FALL RESCUE PLAN MUST BE IN PLACE Why? When a person is suspended in a harness for a period of time then Pre-syncope may occur due to Orthostasis, motionless vertical suspension. Rescuers of persons in harness suspension should be able to recognise the symptoms of pre-syncope. These include light headedness; nausea; sensations of flushing; tingling or numbness of the arms or legs; anxiety; visual disturbance; or a feeling they are about to faint. All users of fall arrest equipment must be trained and competent in its safe use and at least 1 member of each team be trained and competent in the chosen rescue techniques and equipment.

HEIGHT SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Fall arrest equipment users should be trained how to proceed or care for themselves in the event of a fall. 1. Assess the situation and refer to your company / site specific rescue plan. 2. Encourage the casualty to pump their legs if conscious to maintain the blood flow. 3. Initiate rescue from a safe area ensuring the rescuers do not put themselves at risk and utilising one of the many forms of rescue equipment available. 4. Follow standard UK first aid guidance of ABC management, even if they are subject to prior harness suspension. 5. Seek professional medical assistance for the casualty as soon as possible.

Fall Arrest Lanyards

Inertia Reels/Fall Arrest Blocks

Shock Absorbing Fall Arrest Lanyards incorporate an energy absorber (BS EN 355) that is designed to reduce the forces on the body in the event of a fall. This type of lanyard must be used where there is any risk of a fall. They are made to a fixed length that must not exceed 2m including the anchorage points.

These devices do not incorporate and must not be used with a shock absorbing pack of any kind otherwise ‘bounce’ or secondary pay-out may occur. They are frequently used where a fixed length lanyard is either not practical or does not provide sufficient protection. Unless otherwise specified, these devices should be anchored above the user. They will pay out and ‘snatch’ with a sudden movement similar to a car seat belt. These type of arrestors are available from 1.5m, 2.5m, 3.5m, 6m, up to 40m long. Pages 128-132. The smaller ones can be attached directly to the harness, and the larger ones are attached to an anchorage point with the use of an anchorage strop or girder loop and a carabina. Inertia systems are by far the safest fall arrest anchor attachment means.

Lanyards and Fall Height Margins Position your anchor point as high as possible and use as short a lanyard as possible to minimise the fall distance. Presuming a 1.75m lanyard is being used, the following height clearance (measured from anchor level including 1m safety margin) is required, depending on anchorage location. Above head 5m Shoulder Height 5.75m Foot Level 6.75m

When using only one of the two lanyards (sharing one shock-absorber pack), the worker should NOT wrap the spare lanyard around his body or attach it back to the harness or the belt, as this could cause the absorber pack to fail. Instead, the spare lanyard should either be clipped onto the same anchor point or a sacrificial parking loop which is either Velcro or a plastic loop which will break free in the event of a fall. It is extremely dangerous to lengthen the twin tailed lanyard by connecting the snap hook carabina to the harness and the other to the anchor point, leaving the shock absorber hanging. The lanyard will most certainly fail to arrest a fall and result in serious injury or death if connected in this way.

Preventing Pendulum Fall Risk Great care must be taken when using inertia reels or fall arrest blocks, not to get into a position where a ‘pendulum swing’ type fall could occur. This can be avoided by the use of two blocks anchored diagonally away from each other.
