The town of Cornelius, the second youngest of Mecklenburg County's six incorporated towns, was founded in 1893 but not incorporated until March 4, 1905. The Town's origin has been traced by many historians to a dispute over cotton weighing. In the late 1800's, two thriving cotton firms located in Davidson disagreed on whether an official town cotton weigher should be appointed. After a heated election was held and legislation enacted, a town cotton weigher was hired and the firm which opposed the appointment decided to relocate much of its operations just south of the Davidson town limits. Frequently after heavy rains, the road connecting Davidson and (soon-to-be) Cornelius would become impassible. The hill leading into Davidson would become so muddy that many cotton farmers found it safer and more convenient to conduct their business just south of Davidson in a small frame building. The success of the cotton purchasing business later inspired the owners to construct a cotton mill where raw cotton could be converted into cloth. The owners of the cotton firm lacked the needed money to make the idea of a cotton mill a reality, but they knew who could provide the financial backing. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius (1833-1914) supplied the needed investment and the mill was opened. Although the Town was originally incorporated as 'Liverpool', the Town's name was soon changed to Cornelius to honor J.B. Cornelius who was the principal stockholder in the cotton mill. The damming of the Catawba River to create Lake Norman was as influential as the cotton industry to the town's development and growth. In 1963 Duke Power created Lake Norman and provided the area with recreational opportunities and a source of hydroelectric power. The formation of Lake Norman also provided the area with choice lakeside property. A Growing Town... As you pass through Cornelius today, taking in the beautiful landscapes, homes, and posh boutiques, one would never think that twenty years ago Lake Norman was primarily a weekend retreat, its shores dotted with tin-roofed boathouses, mobile homes and fishing cabins. Through the 1990's, the population of Cornelius grew by 364%. In 2009, Business Week name Cornelius one of the country’s 10 most affordable suburbs. Criteria included lowest crime rates, finest schools and best quality of life for the dollar. Parks, Marinas, and Boating... Cornelius residents enjoy top-notch Mecklenburg County parks. If you're putting your boat into the water, public access ramps are available at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius, a 43-acre waterfront park with two large picnic shelters, a playground, volleyball courts, picnic facilities, fishing and boat ramps. Ramsey Creek Park will open a new public swimming area by 2012. Another is Jetton Park, a 105-acre park with tennis, bike rentals, walking trails, picnic shelters, playground and a beach. The Peninsula Yacht Club, a private club, offers 405 boats slips ranging in size from 25 - 45 feet, a swimming pool and clubhouse with casual and upscale dining.

Bailey Road Park Bailey Road Park encompasses over 57 acres located off Hwy 115 at the corner of Bailey Road. The Park provides a variety of recreational opportunities and site amenities, including two lighted soccer fields and a football field. There are also three lighted tennis courts, as well as two lighted baseball/softball fields. Two shelter areas with picnic tables and public restrooms are also located on the park site. Other amenities include outdoor basketball courts, an asphalt walking trail, two playground areas and a popular nine hole disc golf course. Bailey Road Park hosts the free summer Concerts in the Park Series in its outdoor BandShell. Visit the Cornelius PARC Department for more info at www.corneliuspr.org.

Lake Norman Boating For six decades, Lake Norman has been an oasis for boating enthusiasts. There is even a couple of ol' time Mississippi Paddle Wheelers on the Lake. From power boating to sailing it is all here. Need a place to keep your boat, pay a visit to one of the many marinas located around Lake Norman. Many offer both wet and dry storage for your boat as well as plenty of dock space for their customers use. Many of these marinas also rent boats. Most rental companies have pontoon boats, ski boats, and fishing boats to offer their customers. Lake Norman State Park: This 1,328-acre park in Troutman showcases the area’s natural beauty and amenities. It has over 13 miles of shoreline, along with picnic areas, campgrounds, as well as extensive hiking and biking trails. You can launch your boat from the public access area on State Park Road situated at the park’s southern end. There are 2 boat ramps and a dock. Or, for something a little more low-key, rent a pedal boat or canoe and go fishing in the park’s own 33 acre lake. Use of the area is free, but cars must leave the parking area by closing time. 159 Inland Sea Lane, Troutman NC 704.528.6350 Blythe Landing: This 26-acre park situated just inside Ramsey Creek cove has 6 boat launch sites, four docks and a 125 yard stretch of sandy beach (no swimming allowed). Other features include sand volleyball courts, a playground and picnic area. Armin’s Sunshine Café at Blythe Landing overlooks the lake and serves sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and sodas. Ramsey Creek Park: Situated in Cornelius, this 43-acre waterfront park has a beach and multiple boat launching areas, as well as docks and a fishing pier. There are also 3 picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, three-acre dog park, playground and nature trails. Launch fees are $5 for Mecklenburg County residents and $8 for others. Hours: dawn to dark. 18411 Nantz Road Ramsey (Marker R5), Cornelius 704.336.3586 Stumpy Creek Park Located on Lake Norman adjacent to Stumpy Creek Park, the boat landing is open 24 hours a day, year round. It is maintained and operated by Iredell County Parks and Recreation. A $2.00 daily launch fee is required for all watercraft. A Season Pass can be purchased by calling the Parks and Recreation Department @ 704-878-3103. Season Passes are valid from the date of purchase through the end of the calendar year. Stumpy Creek Boat Landing is designed for boat launch only. Swimming, Fishing, Picnicking, and Sun Bathing are not allowed.
