History Concord's history dates back over 200 years. Back in the late 1700's, it seems there was a disagreement between the German and Scots-Irish settlements in the area over exactly where the County seat of the newly formed county of Cabarrus should be located. A compromise was eventually reached, and the new city was founded in 1796 on a 26 acre site. The city was named Concord, meaning "harmony," to reflect the spirit in which the issue was settled. When you look at Concord today and see the wonderful mixture of progress and heritage, the perfect blend of business, industrial, and residential life, you can see that Concord still embodies the meaning of its name - "harmony."

Downtown Concord Within a radius of two city blocks you have two live theaters, a museum, two art galleries, a library, a gourmet French chocolate shop, a pottery studio where members have access 24/7 to enjoy their craft, an up-and coming university, a botanical garden, a pedestrian greenway system, and much more, all nestled within a wonderful offering of specialty shops and a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy something as simple as a cup of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich to a full four-course gourmet meal.

A Great Place to Live Although it enjoys many of the advantages of small town life, Concord has continued to be a progressive community. According to the North Carolina State Demographer's Office, Concord is the twelfth largest city in North Carolina.[5] The city was also a winner of the All-America City Award in 2004. Located near the center of Cabarrus County, it is twenty miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte.


Afton Village Patterned after our most beautiful traditional historic neighborhoods, Afton Village is planned with the pedestrian in mind. Tree-lined streets and a network of wide sidewalks will create a strong pedestrian connection between residential areas and the commercial Main Street, the Village Green, and the 60 acre park that bisects the community.

James Dorton Park is a 30 acre public park located in the middle of Afton Village along Afton Run Creek. The park includes soccer fields, lighted tennis courts, picnic shelters, restrooms, play equipment, Frisbee golf and walking trails. Dorton Park has played host to numerous large scale functions including the City of Concord sponsored Annual Bunny Bash and 5k Fun Run.


The Village Center is made up of a collection of retail shops, restaurants, office space and residential units. With a emphasis the pedestrian, the Village Center offers a variety of open spaces ranging in size from the Village Green to the more intimate plazas and dining patios.

At over an acre in size, the Village Green provides the largest open space area. Lined with Elm trees, the Village Green serves as a natural play area for children and adults alike. The adjacent Village Center Plaza serves as the venue for a variety of outdoor events, from the monthly Party on the Plaza to more informal gatherings. The Foundry Plaza and the patios connected with each of Afton’s restaurants are evidence that Afton Village places a high value on creating comfortable outdoor spaces for its residents and visitors. Serving as the “spine” of Afton Village, Village Drive is modeled on the traditional commercial “main street,” lined with commercial shops and plazas … and gradually transitioning into the residential area. As the Village Center continues to build and evolve, this development pattern will become more and more apparent … and thus more attractive and exciting.
