The Town of Davidson officially came into being in 1891. It was previously incorporated as the "Town of Davidson College" in 1879 and before then was referred to simply as "Davidson College.” A walk in historic Davidson is a step back in time. Brick sidewalks, hanging flower baskets and tree-lined walks and streets characterize both the campus and town. In 1991, Davidson expanded eastward to include the community of River Run Country Club. This and other additions boosted the Davidson town limits to 4.5 square miles. Davidson College has been and continues to be central to life in Davidson. The college employs over 500 faculty and staff; it's recognized as one of the leading four-year liberal arts institutions in the country highly selective and nationally recognized; has about 1,600 students and participates in NCAA Division I athletics.

A Growing Town… Davidson has sustained moderate growth, in part because of careful town planning. Davidson is the 2004 Smart Growth Award winner for Overall Excellence in town planning and design. The town of Davidson has planned its development over the last few years with a commitment to protecting pedestrians and keeping the small-town charm. As soon as you’re off the highway, almost everything you need in within walking distance. Schools, housing, dining, shopping and even and independent movie theater all reside within a two-mile radius. Davidson's population is about 7,500. Davidson's main residential area is located east of Interstate 77 and borders Lake Davidson. Near the college, massive oak trees surround gorgeous Victorian and Georgian-style homes. Main Street, which borders Davidson College, is lined with small, old-time shops that sell antiques, books, clothing, and gifts. Downtown Davidson also hosts the annual North Mecklenburg Christmas Parade and Christmas in Davidson.

Pack an evening picnic for one of the Concerts on The Green in the summer, take a carriage ride around downtown with a cup of hot chocolate during Christmas in Davidson and check out Art on the Green, part of the “April is for Arts” series, when spring rolls around.

Davidson Farmer’s Market The Davidson Farmer’s Market is a producer-only, year-round market featuring more than 35 farmers and local producers from within a 100 mile radius. The market is a lively gathering place for meeting friends and for learning about food, agriculture and nutrition. Growers and producers are on hand to answer your questions, from “How was this grown?” to questions about how to prepare and preserve all types of foods. The DFM includes a variety of quality goods, such as certified organic, naturally grown and conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef, pastured pork and free range chicken and ostrich, eggs from free-range chickens, fresh baked goods, prepared foods, fresh cut flowers, herbs, plants and more.
