In the summer of 1964 , John D. Gibson and a small group of local businessmen who were also interested in aviation decided that they would look for a site for an airport, not only to allow them to pursue their own aviation interests, but to benefit the town of Mooresville. Led by Mr. Gibson and incorporated in 1964, the Lake Norman Aviation Club, Inc. (LNAC) negotiated leasing arrangements with Duke Power Co. to use the land, which by now was situated on a peninsula in the lake. In the early months of the Airport, the club worked with Duke Power to clear timber and the National Guard to grade and prepare the land for the airstrip, to be named "Mooresville Airport". A few months later, in February and March of 1965, the club purchased its first airplanes: A Piper Super Cruiser and a Piper J-3 Cub. By April of 1965 the club had grown to 51 members. Soon the club realized that it needed a clubhouse for meetings and social events. After rights-of-way and easements were obtained LNAC began construction of its clubhouse. The first meeting recorded as being held in the new clubhouse was in July 1966. In 1970 the runway was a 2,400 foot grass strip, 20 feet wide and plans were made to construct T-hangers on the field. By August of 1971 membership had dropped to 21. The balance of the seventies proved to be troubling times for the club and the members were determined to make a new start. By the mid-1980’s the club was again active. The National Guard was called in once again to help out. This time it was to erect a beacon on the field. A work day was scheduled for January 6, 1987. Talks with the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce were commenced in February in an attempt to interest the town in owning the airport. By the next year, club member Tom Wilson had expressed an interest in the property and proposed purchasing it and developing a residential community. In 1990 Tom Wilson purchased the airport property and the surrounding acreage, developing a working agreement with the club so that it could continue. Members were eager to focus their attention on flying rather than fixing, according to the minutes of the club. Continued improvements were made including tie-down areas, renovating the club house and adding a telephone. Tom Wilson Properties was formed to develop and market the residential airpark In May of 1994 The Lake Norman Airpark Owners Association was incorporated as a non-profit corporation and as such, it is a tax-exempt corporation abiding by the laws of the state of North Carolina. The "Association" owns and maintains the runway and approximately 40 acres of common area, which includes the associated residential taxi-ways. It also governs construction on the air park. With a surface area of 32,510 acres and over 500 miles of shoreline water, with public access locations in Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Troutman, Sherills Ford and Denver. Lake Norman with over 500 miles of shoreline provides plenty of space for your boating opportunities. From serene sailing to power boating, Lake Norman has it all. There is even a couple of ol' time Mississippi Paddle Wheelers on the Lake. From power boating to sailing it is all here. Need a place to keep your boat, pay a visit to one of the many marinas located around Lake Norman. Many offer both wet and dry storage for your boat as well as plenty of dock space for their customers use. Many of these marinas also rent boats. Most rental companies have pontoon boats, ski boats, and fishing boats to offer their customers. Lake Norman State Park: This 1,328-acre park in Troutman showcases the area’s natural beauty and amenities. It has over 13 miles of shoreline, along with picnic areas, campgrounds, as well as extensive hiking and biking trails. You can launch your boat from the public access area on State Park Road situated at the park’s southern end. There are 2 boat ramps and a dock. Or, for something a little more low-key, rent a pedal boat or canoe and go fishing in the park’s own 33 acre lake. Use of the area is free, but cars must leave the parking area by closing time. 159 Inland Sea Lane, Troutman NC 704.528.6350 Blythe Landing: This 26-acre park situated just inside Ramsey Creek cove has 6 boat launch sites, four docks and a 125 yard stretch of sandy beach (no swimming allowed). Other features include sand volleyball courts, a playground and picnic area. Armin’s Sunshine Café at Blythe Landing overlooks the lake and serves sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and sodas. Ramsey Creek Park: Situated in Cornelius, this 43-acre waterfront park has a beach and multiple boat launching areas, as well as docks and a fishing pier. There are also 3 picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, three-acre dog park, playground and nature trails. Launch fees are $5 for Mecklenburg County residents and $8 for others. Hours: dawn to dark. 18411 Nantz Road Ramsey (Marker R5), Cornelius 704.336.3586 Stumpy Creek Park Located on Lake Norman adjacent to Stumpy Creek Park, the boat landing is open 24 hours a day, year round. It is maintained and operated by Iredell County Parks and Recreation. A $2.00 daily launch fee is required for all watercraft. A Season Pass can be purchased by calling the Parks and Recreation Department @ 704-878-3103. Season Passes are valid from the date of purchase through the end of the calendar year. Stumpy Creek Boat Landing is designed for boat launch only. Swimming, Fishing, Picnicking, and Sun Bathing are not allowed.
