BLUE Area historian recounts trials of Dowagiac-area Union soldiers By TED YOAKUM ted.yoakum @leaderpub.com
From the infantry who marched behind General William Sherman during his ruthless march through the farmlands of Georgia to the cavalry who led the charge during Custer’s ill-fated raid during the Battle of Trevilian Station, soldiers hailing from the City of Dowagiac played a role in many of the American Civil War’s most pivotal moments. Area historian and author John Urschel shared the stories of these and other Michigan soldiers serving in the Union army with the over 50 people assembled in the Elk’s Lodge Thursday evening. Urschel was the guest speaker during the Dowagiac Rotary Club’s annual “Family and Friends of Rotary” dinner that evening, giving spouses, children and other acquaintances of club members a chance to see the local service organization in action. While he may have claimed his reasons for taking the vehicle were due to an emergency, a Dowagiac man’s drunken truck theft has earned him a six-month stay in a Cass County jail cell. Circuit Judge Michael Dodge sentenced 44-yearold James Scott Jones to 180 days in jail during a sentencing hearing in county court Friday, on charges of operating while intoxicated and unlawfully driving away an automobile. Jones had already pleaded guilty to the counts during an earlier appearance in court, on March 23. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Jan. 24, when Jones stole a work truck from the Hill Crest Apartments complex, located on Hill Street in Dowagiac. See THEFT, page 3

ARBOR DAY
By TED YOAKUM ted.yoakum@leaderpub.com
A
t a ceremony Friday afternoon, Mayor Lyons and other residents celebrated Arbor Day. The mayor issued a proclamation in celebration of the annual holiday, reading as follows: Whereas, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and Whereas, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; and Whereas, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and Whereas, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and Whereas, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and beautify our community; and
Whereas, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and Whereas, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and Whereas, the City of Dowagiac’s Arbor Day originated through the efforts of Mr. Edward Darr, and is celebrated through various festivities and the annual tree planting; and Whereas, the City has been annually designated as a Tree City USA: and Whereas, the City has forged a commitment to managing our urban forest. Now, Therefore, I, Donald D. Lyons, Mayor of the City of Dowagiac, do hereby proclaim the last Friday in April, as Arbor Day in the City of Dowagiac from this date forward, and I urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands; and Further, I encourage citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations. Employees at city hall also handed out pine tree seedlings to visitors that day as well.

Continued from page 1 Urschel, a retired records manager, began chronicling the names of southwest Michigan men who participated in the civil war four years ago, while working as a contract archivist for the Buchanan District Library. Compiling information on the around 1,500 men from the Buchanan area who took part in the war over 150 years, the historian gave presentations and published a source book on his findings. “That started a storm that took over my life,” Urschel said. Urschel was then contacted by the Decatur library to perform a similar task for their institution, leading to him researching the names of Union soldiers from Cass County. He has since gone on to publish a total of nine books about Michigan men serving in the bloodiest conflict in American history. Troops from the Dowagiac area were a part of several Michigan regiments that served throughout

Continued from page 1 Shortly after taking the vehicle, he was stopped by an officer with the Michigan State Police, who discovered that not only did Jones have a suspended driver’s license but that he was also intoxicated, with a .15 blood alcohol level, Dodge said. “You’re driving on suspended license, which you shouldn’t be doing,” he said. “You’re driving
the four-year war, including the 6th, 12th, 13th and 19th Michigan infantry and 1st Michigan Calvary. Despite being more sparsely populated than many of 23 states that comprised the Union, Michigan contributed around 7,000 troops at the outset of the war, far exceeding the 3,000 man quota established by Washington. Recruitment in the state remained strong in later years of the conflict, due in part to a bounty system that gave immediate payouts to men who enlisted, often of more than $150, Urschel said. “[That’s] more than a farm boy from Michigan would see in his lifetime,” he said. “It was a king’s ransom. So you take the $150, give it to your mom, and you’re off to war.” With hundreds of known troops from the area making up Michigan forces, Dowagiac’s total contributions to the Civil War may be higher than Urschel can uncover, due to the inaccuracies of reporting in those days, he said. “[Recruits] played fast and loose with where they were from,” he said. “The guy writing down where
while under the influence of alcohol and you didn’t have any permission to drive the truck in the first place.” According to the prosecution, Jones had a female passenger in the car with him at the time, and was on the way to the hospital due to medical emergency. “Two-hundred fifty-one people approximately die every year due to drunk drivers,” said Prosecutor Victor Fitz. “[Jones] is a statistic waiting to happen.” Fitz pointed out that
you were from and all your information got paid a dollar a head, and he didn’t care if he got it right or not.” Dowagiac companies saw action across nearly all fronts of the conflict, including in some of its most deadly engagements, such as Gettysburg, Shiloh and Stones River. Some also lost their lives in the infamous Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp where nearly 13,000 northern soldiers died of disease. Despite the somber subject matter, Urschel provided some levity to the evening during the question and answer segment following his presentation. When asked if he had ever participated in a civil war enactment, he told the audience he didn’t, gesturing toward the heavy Union officer’s jacket he had worn during the first part of his speech. “To be an reenactor, you have to spend hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars to get yourself a uniform, which is wool. And you go out when its August, when it’s 110 degrees out, in a field, in a tent, in the rain, with a 1,000 other men,” he said. “Does this sound like fun to any of you?”
the defendant has a number of prior convictions on his record, with three felonies and 10 misdemeanors. He also has a history of driving with a suspended license, though most of them occurred over 15 years ago. “You don’t care that it’s against the law,” Dodge said. “You want to drive, so you drive, whether you have a valid license or not.” Jones was also serving a probation sentence at the time of the offense for welfare fraud, which he was convicted for back in
2012. With that in mind, Dodge determined that the man would not be a suitable candidate for another probation sentence for his latest criminal behavior, he said. “Your sentence guideline range does require a minimum jail term of five months,” Dodge said. “The court clearly does not find any substantial or compelling reasons to deviate from that range.” Jones was given credit for two days already served. He was also ordered to pay $275 worth of restitution.

Colin Powell to address the Economic Club May 19 SUBMITTED The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan announced at its April 14 Jay Leno meeting, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, Gen. Colin Powell, USA (Ret.), will address The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan. The member-only meeting will be held May 19 at the Mendel Center for the Arts and Technology, Lake Michigan College, Benton Harbor, Mich. “We originally had a commitment from Gov. Mitt Romney to be our guest in May,” said Michael Cook, Club president. “However, we were recently informed that he couldn’t come. This is the first time in more than 30 years that a speaker has failed to

keep his commitment to The Club.” Cook said The Club immediately began seeking a national-caliber speaker to replace Romney and on very short notice Powell graciously accepted the invitation. This is a return visit for Powell who addressed The Club during the 1994-1995 and 20052006 speaker series.
For more than 50 years Powell has devoted his life to public service. The son of Jamaican immigrants, he was born in Harlem and educated in New York City public schools. He joined the Army ROTC program at City College of New York and launched a military career that culminated with the rank of Four-Star General. From 1987-1989, Powell served as President Ronald Reagan’s National Security Advisor. Then from 1989-1993 he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. President George W. Bush appointed Powell as the 65th Secretary of State. He led the State Department through numerous regional and civil conflicts in Su-
dan, Congo, Liberia, the Balkans, Cyprus, Haiti, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. Across his illustrious career, Powell received numerous awards including two presidential Medals of Freedom, the French Legion of Honor and honorary knighthood by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Today he is a best-selling author and strategic director for several business and nonprofit boards. Gen. Powell will share with Club members his insights on the topic “Leadership: Taking Charge.” Anyone wishing more information about the member-only Club may visit www.TheEconClub.com, email info@ TheEconClub.com or call 269-982-6010.

Student given second chance Judge orders Niles man to pay restitution for concealing stolen bike By TED YOAKUM ted.yoakum @leaderpub.com As described by Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz, 18-year-old Charles Edward Kemp Jr. faces a crossroads for his future as he approaches his high school graduation— with one path leading to becoming a successful member of society and another leading toward the path of a career criminal. With several convictions already on his record, the prosecutor
hopes that the Niles student will look ahead a bit at the road he is currently traveling down, he said. “He has something that no one else in his courtroom has, and that’s youth,” Fitz said. “There are so many things he can do with his life. He can make the choice himself, whether that’s continuing to be very foolish, involved in drugs, involved in theft, involved with assault; or he can do something great with his life.” For now, though, Kemp will have to worry about
paying his debt to society: figuratively in Berrien County, and literally in Cass. Judge Michael Dodge ordered the Niles high school student to pay $400 worth of restitution during a sentencing hearing Friday at the Cass County courthouse in Cassopolis, related to his conviction for larceny. The 18-yearold pleaded guilty to the charge on March 23. The count of larceny arose from an incident that occurred last year on July 28, when Kemp was involved in concealing a
YMCA wants kids to ‘grow it, try it, like it’ SUBMITTED The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is now taking registrations for Grow It, Try It, Like It — Kinder Camp 2015. This is a specialized summer camp with a focus on youth development for 3 to 5 year-olds. Camp will be held five days a week June 15 to July 31. Grow It, Try It, Like It is a National Nutrition Education Program and is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture. It is a gardentheme curriculum that features fruits and vegetables with fun activities through the imaginary garden at Tasty Acres Farm. Each day will include fun hands-on activities that focus on gardening and MyPlate nutrition education. In addition, youth will be

Kemp was also convicted for his involvement in this crime on Aug. 5 in Berrien County, where the residence he had hidden the vehicle was located. He was sentenced to a two year term of probation and 75 days in jail, which he served while still enrolled in school. “You’re currently being supervised in Berrien County as a part of that probation,” Dodge said. Despite his incarceration, Kemp is still on pace to graduate this
spring, said the student’s attorney, Daniel French. “He does have positive things going on in his life,” French said. “I hope this does not deter him from attempting to achieve great things.” Given his punishment in Berrien County, Dodge agreed with French’s and the probation department’s recommendation that he spare Kemp any further jail or probation time for his actions, giving him credit for two days already served. “Now is the time to get things turned around,” the judge said. “You’re off to a bumpy start here
at age 18. If there was ever a time to stop this trend and get yourself back on the right path, this is it.” Also sentenced Friday: • Joseph Brown, 65, of Cassopolis, to two years in prison for operating while intoxicated. • James Irving Nichols, 48, of Dowagiac, to 18 months probation for possession of cocaine. • Michael L. Harrington, 50, of Cassopolis, to 120 days in jail and three years of probation for conspiracy to manufacture/deliver a controlled substance and for possession of marijuana.

Jacob Neiheisel
Oct. 17, 1965 — April 20, 2015 Jacob F. “Jake” Neiheisel, 49, Dowagiac, Michigan, passed away at his home on Monday, April 20, 2015, from a massive heart attack. He was born on Oct. 17, 1965, in Kokomo, the son of Jack and Mary Ann (Hamlin) Neiheisel. Jake was a 1984 graduate of Kokomo High School where he was the class president. He went on to graduate from Ball State University in 1988 with a business degree. He had been employed with Chrysler Corporation for several years. Jake had also been employed with JD Byrider in South Bend, along with being a business owner of a used car dealership in Mishawaka, Indiana. Since January, he had been coming home to work for his sister Lori at her store, Mac’s Market, to help with an expansion. His specialty was breakfast and he loved handing out free samples to
his customers. Often customers came in just to drink coffee and shoot the breeze with Jake. His sister Amy and best friend, brother David were doubly blessed because they got to laugh with him every day at work, making even more beautiful memories. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Black Hawks. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting breakfast for his neighbors at the lake on Sundays, where as “Mayor,” he officially declared it “Sunday FunDay.” Jake’s home was on Dewey Lake where he had wonderful friends who
were his second family. He and his friends loved to gather at BT’s and watch sports, have cook-off contests and congregate for family meals. We will never be able to repay his friends at the lake for all of the love, kindness and wonderful stories they have shared with our Jake. Jake is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Neiheisel, Kokomo; sisters, Lisa (Mike) Fox, Kokomo, Lori Sawyer (and boyfriend Jamie Miles), Kokomo, Mary Pat (Glenn) Grise, Evergreen, CO, and Amy Neiheisel, Kokomo; brother, David Neiheisel (and girlfriend Stephanie Hulce); nieces and nephews, Jacob (Natalie) Fox, Joey Fox (and girlfriend Christian Lawhead), Katy Sawyer (and boyfriend Matt Duncan), Brooke Sawyer, Drew Sawyer, AJ Grise, Same Grise, Jackson Grise, Mara HulceNeiheisel, Jacob Ashburn, and Nicholas Ashburn; great niece, Sydney Rae Fox, along with his dog, Blue and cat, Baxter. Jake was preceded in death by his father, Jack
Neiheisel, and his grandparents. Jake made life fun for everyone he knew. He deeply cared about all of his friendships and would help anyone in need. He was the best son, brother, and uncle, and we are all struggling to say goodbye. But, our Dad had to be elated when Jake joined him in heaven! What a reunion that must have been! They both will be cheering for our Cubbies from the upper deck this year, and who knows-maybe it will be our year! Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Dick Sanburn and Chuck Jansen officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Jake’s memory to the Kokomo Rescue Mission or the Special Olympics. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.

Thinking about choosing a crematory?
Ask the Questions: 1.) Where is the crematory facility located? 2.) Can I visit and inspect the crematory facility? 3.)Is the crematory facility exclusive to your funeral home?

Chieftains split with Coloma Shining STARSH
Dowagiac takes nightcap from defending West champs By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak@leaderpub.com Defending Wolverine Conference West Division champion Coloma suffered a split with Dowagiac Friday. The Comets took advantage of six Chieftain errors in winning the opening game 9-3. Dowagiac rebounded to take the nightcap 1-0. In the second game, the Chieftains scored on a leadoff walk to Megan Huey, a sacrifice bunt SportS rewind by Hannah Whitaker and a single up the middle by Taylor Hullett. Dowagiac was able to hold off a Coloma rally in the top of the seventh by cutting down a runner at the plate. Catcher Megan Soderbloom corralled a past ball in time to toss it to Hulett who was covering the plate. “We had a horrible first game after the first inning,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “We made some defensive mistakes and took some bad swings and started to feel sorry for ourselves and Coloma just kept putting it on us. “I challenge the girls before the second to forget about what happened and show me what kind of players they are and they responded. We played errorfree softball including getting two outs at the plate and got a timely hit with a runner in scoring position. That’s what it tames to beat a good team like Coloma.” Hulett tossed a four-hitter in the second game with eight strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season. Dowagiac got two of its four hits from Soderbloom. In the opening, Dowagiac finished with eight hits, including two each from Riley Daly and McKenzie Herter.

BROTHER WITH REPEAT OFFENSES DOESN’T MERIT SISTER’S SUPPORT Dear Abby Jeanne Phillips
D
EAR ABBY: My brother is older than I am and has been in and out of prison. He has stolen my things and pawned them. I am married, and my husband and I are expecting our first child. We live in a time zone several hours behind the one my family is in. I am now receiving phone calls at 4 o’clock in the morning from collection agencies on the hunt for my brother. He has been writing bad checks and leaving my phone number as a contact number. I have managed to determine who his probation officer is, and I’m on the fence about whether I should tell her what he is up to. My dad is furious with me for even considering it since “brothers and sisters don’t do that to each other.” Honestly, I am fed up with this “blood is thicker than water” mentality when it comes to my brother’s wrongdoings. He is now including my family in his schemes, and I won’t stand for it any longer. What should I do? -- LITTLE SIS IN THE USA
guilty for protecting yourself and your family. Blood isn’t thicker than water when abuse is involved, and your brother’s behavior qualifies. Contact his probation officer. With luck, when the collection agency calls again, you will be able to give them your brother’s “cell” number. DEAR ABBY: Last year I had bariatric surgery. Since the surgery I have lost a significant amount of weight and still have a lot to go before I reach my goal weight. In the beginning, my husband was supportive and seemed proud of my weight loss. But he is no longer as physically interested in me now as he was when I was considerably larger. I recently discovered several photos of larger women on our computer. Now I’m wondering if he’s looking for my replacement or just has a “thing” for bigger women. Should I say something to him about this apparent desire for larger women? -- SLIMMING DOWN IN WASHINGTON
DEAR SLIMMING DOWN: If you feel your weight loss may have negatively affected your marriage, you should absolutely talk with your husband about it. Frankly, HE should have discussed it with you before you made the decision. Bariatric surgery is a major operation. It is lifechanging and should not be taken lightly. DEAR LITTLE SIS: There are no As I see it, you have taken a giant step in excuses for what your brother has done. If a positive direction healthwise, and I hope his father had given him a dose of tough nothing will interfere with it. If you and love while he was a minor, he might have your husband have trouble discussing this, stayed on the straight and narrow instead of please do it with the help of your doctor or landing in the pokey. a licensed marriage counselor. Rapid changes this year will require prompt and decisive action. Relationship problems with children or older relatives will need to be handled tactfully and fairly. Your professional life will stabilize as the year progresses, providing you with greater financial security. TAURUS (ApRil 20-MAY 20) Conservative investments or proven formulas will help to improve your financial situation. Be prudent. Unproven or risky purchases can do lasting damage to your reputation and personal life. GEMiNi (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Don’t rely on others to tell you the truth. All decisions must be made on your own terms. Research will be imperative. Family tension will escalate if not dealt with quickly. CANCER (JUNE 21-JUlY 22) Strive to bring attention to social issues that you care about. You will gain support, but also face detractors. The better prepared you are, the more favorable the response will be.
SCORpiO (OCT. 24-NOV. 22) Stimulate your imagination by trying something amusing or entertaining. This will also help to serve as a diversion from a troublesome situation that has been hovering in your thoughts. SAGiTTARiUS (NOV. 23-DEC. 21) You will have to dig deep if you want to find the answers you are looking for. Friends or family will tell you what you want to hear, not what you need to know. CApRiCORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) This is not the time to lend or borrow money. Be open about business matters. Your reputation will suffer if you make secretive arrangements or deals.
lEO (JUlY 23-AUG. 22) Bottling up your emotions will result in tension and frustration. Even if the matter is a sensitive one, you must honestly acknowledge your feelings if you hope to move forward.
AQUARiUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 19) A change in the way you earn your living is apparent. You will meet someone who offers important information about a career opportunity. Weigh the pros and cons before you make a move.
ViRGO (AUG. 23-SEpT. 22) Deception is apparent. Trust your intuition. Someone will withhold vital information in order to further his or her interests. Don’t let anyone pressure you.
piSCES (FEB. 20-MARCh 20) Fluctuating health issues should be investigated. Something that seems minor will get worse if it’s not dealt with in a timely manner. Keep accurate records of your medical history.
liBRA (SEpT. 23-OCT. 23) A change of scenery will provide clues to the solution of a current dilemma. At first you may question what unfolds, but as the day progresses, everything will fall into place.
ARiES (MARCh 21-ApRil 19) Love and romance are in a high cycle. You will be the life of the party, so get out with friends and enjoy yourself. A new connection will intrigue you.

Mno-Bmadsen establishes Seven Generations Construction SUBMITTED
Mno-Bmadsen announced today the establishment of Seven Generations Construction, LLC and reported that Robert J. Farkas has joined the firm as president. Farkas is responsible for the ground-up development of construction project delivery systems across all vertical markets and all in-house performance contracting entities. Seven Generations Construction, in tandem with Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering, LLC, provides comprehensive building solutions by offering architecture, engineering and construction services. “Bob’s addition to our team represents a significant expansion of our services and capabilities,” said Troy Clay, chief executive officer at Mno-Bmadsen. “He has a depth of experience in the design/build delivery model that will enable us to add a valuable dimension to Seven Generations’ overall operation. The company will now include design/build, construction management at risk, general construction and self-performing general trades as client offerings.” Farkas will lead all phases of construction management, general construction and design/ build project delivery. His depth of experience managing complex programs in the commercial, educational, governmental, and institutional sectors adds

new facets and strength to the Seven Generations’ team and expands their service offering in the market. Farkas will support business development efforts across all Mno-Bmadsen businesses specific to the construction industry including federal, state and municipal markets, leveraging the company’s tribal status and culture into a successful client-centered business unit. Farkas will begin with a focus on Midwest operations from offices in Kalamazoo, and the newly established main office in South Bend. He will assist in the strategic development of additional operational regions throughout the United States. “To be able to instantly expand the Seven Generations AE service offerings is an exciting opportunity,” said Farkas. “To be back in South Bend among some of the industry’s best contractors has been a personal goal
for a few years. With the start-up construction group we will focus on building client relationships as solid as the structures we put up. We are assembling a team of professional and tradespeople and will hit the ground running this spring.” Farkas attended Ball State University before settling in at Purdue University to pursue a degree in civil engineering. Before joining Seven Generations Construction, Farkas served as project executive and the manager of field operations for Wight & Company in Darien, Illinois. There he contributed to all business segments and holds a diverse project history spanning several key vertical markets including K-12, higher education and federal contracting. Farkas led Wight’s Indiana business from South Bend, maintaining a constant presence on projects throughout the state for more
than a decade. Prior to that, he spent eight years in progressive roles with Walsh Construction before establishing Terra Group Inc., as a general construction and construction management entity based in New Buffalo. Earlier in his career Farkas was with Terra Group Inc. where he provided construction services to local government and private business entities throughout Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.
