Grand Marshal

Q&A Rosco the Clown

Real name: Ross Champion Home: Mt. Clemens, Michigan Champion has been performing at the Four Flags Area Apple Festival since 2000. He has been named this year’s grand marshal for the apple festival parade. You can find him roaming around the fairgrounds most days. How did you get involved at the Apple Festival? I was at a Michigan Festival and Events Convention in Kalamazoo. I met the Apple Festival committee there. We talked and they had me come to the first one in 2000. How long have you been performing as Rosco the Clown? This is my full-time job. It has been 36 years. My mom and dad are proud. How did you get into that line of work? Basically I’ve always liked to make people laugh, even as a kid, although I never expected to be a clown. I went to Michigan State University for a landscape and horticulture degree and while I was there I read an article in the State News about a clown class being offered next door at the Lansing Community College, which was just a quick bus trip from campus. It wasn’t going to interfere with my studies so I jumped on it because I thought it would be a kick. I signed up and took the course while I was going to MSU. What do you enjoy about it? The people. I just have a ball with my comedy and making people of all ages laugh. When I was brand new I didn’t want to do anything for anyone other than 5 and 6 year olds. Now that I’ve been at it for all this time I’ve found out that there is a child in everyone’s heart. Primarily I get hired for little ones, but I do birthday parties across the board from 1 year old to 100 years old. It is mostly children’s festivals and events. What makes the Apple Festival special for you? The Apple Festival committee is wonderful to work with. The excitement for the festival in the community

is neat as well. It is truly a hometown festival and they make me feel so welcome there. Now that I’ve been at it for 14 years I realize how many people come year after year. It is quite a big thing for Niles. I notice in the small towns the people really support the festivals. What does it mean to you to be grand marshal? I was shocked and excited. I had no idea that they would even think about that. I guess I’ve made a name in Niles, which I am quite thrilled about. I am honored because they usually give that to someone they think well of and it is usually a community person. I don’t live there but I feel like part of the community because when you go there for that many years, people will come back to see you. I get my annual pictures where families will come take a picture with me and their kids and tell me this is their fifth one or their sixth one or their 10th one. That is really fun.

Seed Popping

Tradition, fun for the whole family By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com It is a simple concept. Place an apple seed between your thumb and forefinger and squeeze. The person whose seed flies the farthest wins. “There’s not a whole lot to it,” said Gene Millin, who has been running the apple seed-popping contest at the Four Flags Area Apple Festival for the last 20 years. “It is just a fun time and that is what the festival is all about.” This year’s apple seed-popping contest is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Activities Tent. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

Entry is free and a cash prize will be awarded to people place first through third in several different age groups. Millin said they usually get

about 50 participants of all ages, including many mothers and daughters or sons and fathers. “It is a really familyoriented kind of competition, so it fits in well with everything else at the Apple Festival,” he said. As for strategy, Millin said some people wet the seed by putting it in their mouth before they let it fly. A good distance is more than 30 feet. “I’ve seen them go anywhere from three inches to the longest about 45 feet,” he said. “As a rule, the ladies usually do better than the guys. I think the longest one was by a 16-year-old girl. I can’t tell you why they do better. They just do.”

Old-Fashioned Log Cutting

Popular cutting competition returns By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com The old-fashioned log cutting competition harkens back to a day when most people used wood to heat their homes in the colder months. With the advent of gas and electric furnaces, the skill of cutting a log has nearly disappeared. That’s what makes the popular Four Flags Apple Festival event so appealing to people like Paul Wreggelsworth. “It is a lot of fun with all the people hollering and rooting you on,” said the event chairman. “It is cool watching folks that aren’t used to using tools like that get into it. “It is an old-school country living sort of thing.” This year’s event takes place

from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Apple House. There is an $80 cash prize for first place and a $40 cash prize for second place in several divisions, including senior, men, women and boys and girls of several different age groups. Registration is the day of the event. For the competition, teams of two people use a saw to cut through a piece of sassafras log in a timed event. The quickest team through the log wins.

People can participate as much as they want, but can’t pair with the same person twice. “It is 100 percent teamwork,” said Wreggelsworth, who has won the event several times. “You only want to pull the saw because if you push it the blade will get stuck or can jump out of the groove. If you don’t have rhythm with your partner you aren’t going to win.” In addition to a cash prize, winners get to keep the piece of wood they cut off engraved with a championship logo.
