Welcome to the Fair!

what’s inside

O

n behalf of the Berrien County Youth Fair Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 69th annual Berrien County Youth Fair, Aug. 11-16. Our theme this year is “We Salute Our Heroes,” and we are excited about making memories and celebrating at this year’s fair! The directors, fair staff, advisors, superintendents, sponsors, and over 1,500 volunteers have worked all year to make this a place to showcase the Youth of Berrien County. We want to thank all of the people and businesses that have stepped forward to assist in raising funds for exhibitor premiums. Thanks to all of the people that attended the “Salute Our Heroes” dinner dance and also donated items for the silent auction, and to those that simply donated with the attitude that “it’s all about the kids.” The BCYF, which attracts over 130,000 spectators, is an event for the entire family to attend. Our visitors will find something for everyone to enjoy: over 14,000 exhibits on display exhibited by over 2,400 Berrien County Youth ages 5 through 20, animals, food, rides, over 200 commercial exhibits, entertainment, beautiful flowers and grounds with picnic tables and benches to name just a few. The fair is once again “going green” this year! You’ll see recycling containers located throughout the grounds. In addition, the BCYF has been accepted to the “Green Fair Project,” a 50 percent reimbursement program set up by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee to help promote and demonstrate the benefits of biodiesel and soy based products. You may notice most of our maintenance equipment with biodiesel signs on them; these are the machines using biodiesel fuel. The Berrien County Youth Fair also chose a brochure printer this year that uses soy ink. Check out free attractions, including: a salute to our heroes in our Historical building; Classic K9 Show, a FREE show for the entire family; and daily entertainment in our mall area on the Al Barbott Memorial Stage with PA and lighting equipment from Indiana Michigan Power, Cook Nuclear Plant’s “Heart of Cook” grant. The Entertainment Committee is excited about hosting two nights of country music, Scotty McCreery with special guests Cook & Belle on Wednesday and Travis Tritt on Thursday, Friday night will feature “Big Hair at the Fair” with three different rock bands including Winger, Firehouse and Gun Shy. Don’t forget the other unique entertainment at the Midwest’s Largest Youth Fair, including a truck and tractor pull, and bull riding with a special concert guest DeWayne Spaw! Kids’ Day is Tuesday, with free admission for kids and three free circus shows in the Grandstand. We are expecting a lot of thrill seekers as we again offer one low price each day for rides wristband days, which is every day this year. I hope you will a make a date for your family to come and join in the fun at the 2014 Berrien County Youth Fair. As always you can find great fair food including just a few of our long time fair favorites such as Korn Dogs, Steak Tips, Taffy, Cotton Candy and Lemonade. G

rammy award-winning artist Travis Tritt is scheduled to perform at the Berrien County Youth Fair in Berrien Springs, on Aug. 14. The appearance is one of the many stops on Tritt’s stateside tour, which has received rave reviews from concertgoers and critics alike. The show will kick-off at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $16-$38 and are available for purchase at the fair. Tritt and his band will perform a set list comprised of some of his biggest hits, including “Best Of Intentions,” “Anymore,” “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” “Here’s A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares),” and “Foolish Pride;” as well as songs from his most recent album release, The Calm After.., and his newest single, titled “That’s What Dreamers Do.” The single, “That’s What Dreamers Do,” was inspired by the independent biopic film As Dreamers Do, which is narrated by Tritt. “That’s What Dreamers Do” is now available through iTunes and TravisTritt.com. A Marietta, Georgia native, Travis Tritt is dubbed one of “The Class of ‘89,” which included Country music superstars Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson; all whom dominated the charts in the early 90s. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Tritt’s music career. He formed Post Oak Recordings in 2012 and released his new album The Calm After... through his own record label this past July. Included on the album is a duet with Tritt’s 15-yearold daughter, Tyler Reese. The song, “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” is a cover of the 1980s pop hit. Together, they released a video for the track. Four of the songs on the album, co-produced by Randy Jackson, were either written or co-written by Tritt. The Calm After… is currently available on iTunes and other major digital retailers. Travis Tritt’s 25-year career has produced millions in album sales, two Grammy award wins and multiple No. 1 singles on the Country radio charts, including “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore” and “Best of Intentions.” Among his eleven studio albums and numerous charted singles are nineteen Top 10 hits including “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde,” “Love Of A Woman” and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” Tritt formed Post Oak Recordings in 2012 and is currently on the road with his band performing dates across the United States. As far as future plans, Tritt will release a live DVD in September and he and Marty Stuart have an album in the works. For more information on Travis visit his website TravisTritt.com and follow him on Twitter and FaceBook. For a complete list of upcoming tour dates, please visit www.TravisTritt.com. Cook & Belle

Firehouse The BCYF is excited to bring “Big Hair at the Fair” to the grandstand on the evening of Friday, August 15. This evening, welcomed by Rock 107 WIRX will feature multiple “big hair” rock bands that dominated the music scene in the late 80s and early 90’. Firehouse has been rockin’ for more than two decades. Their music has taken them all over the world and has produced Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum records. They won Best New Hard Rock/Metal Band in 1991 from the American Music Awards. A few of Firehouse’s most notable songs include “When I Look into Your Eyes,” “Don’t Treat Me Bad” and “Love of a Lifetime.” Starting the night will be local rock legends Gun Shy. Ending the show will be Winger, a rock band from New York City. In 1990, Winger was nominated for an American Music Award for Best New Heavy Metal Band. They have toured with bands such as KISS, ZZ Top, Bon Jovi and Tesla.

With 15 years of performing experience at various fairs and festivals throughout the country, Cook and Belle are sure to start out Wednesday night’s show right. Bret and Michelle, the lead singers of the group have been married for 22 years and have been traveling and living their passion for music and entertainment. They have shared the stage with artists such as Rascal Flatts, Lonestar, Charlie Daniels Band and Dierks Bentley to name a few. Cook and Belle’s sound mixes raw passion, country, and soul with a gospel influence.

Seth Cook During the Cook and Belle performance, visitors can catch Seth Cook, Bret and Michelle’s son, who has been performing with his parents since the age of 6. In 2013 Seth made it all the way to the blind auditions for Season 5 of “The Voice!” He has recently been signed to a publishing and artist development deal with Veritable Music, a Nashville based publishing company.

paid to participate Exhibitors rewarded with premiums raised by fair fundraisers By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com

E

very year, the thousands of youth who enter exhibits in the Berrien County Youth Fair get paid to do so. While it is not a lot of money — about $2 per exhibit — Kala Hoover said it is an important aspect of the fair experience. “Most kids don’t necessarily do it for the money, they do it because they love the fair,” said Hoover, a member of the fair committee responsible for raising exhibitor premiums. “The overall experience of showing at the fair and the preparation is the most important part. But part of the fun is looking forward to getting that premium check and putting it toward school supplies, college or doing something fun for yourself.” This year, the fair is expecting about 2,500 exhibitors to enter between 12,000 and 15,000 exhibits. With a $2 premium average per exhibit, Hoover’s committee needs to raise a lot of money — approximately $35,000 a year. County fairs used to get that money from the state, but Michigan stopped sending those checks about 10 years ago. For awhile, Hoover said the fair paid out about 50cent premiums as they adjusted to the lack of funding. The last two years, however, the fundraising committee has gotten that number back to around $2 an exhibit. “We are trying to raise as much money as we can get,” Hoover said. So how can you help out? The committee holds several fundraisers throughout the year. The largest one is a Dinner Dance held each March that raises between $6,000 and $10,000 a year. On Oct. 11, they will be offering a special Mom2Mom sale at the fairgrounds where people can sell gently used baby and children’s items with the proceeds going back to the committee. Twodollars gets visitors in the door. Hoover said more than 1,000 people came last year. The committee also holds a garage sale at the fairgrounds in June in addition to selling commemorative calendars featuring pictures from the fair for $15 a piece. They will also be getting $10 for every person who donates blood during a blood drive Wednesday at Thursday at the fair. “We raised over $700 last year,” Hoover said. The committee will also receive money from the Alumni Horse Show Aug. 13 Hoover said the committee is always looking for new members. For more information about the committee or to find out times and dates of fundraisers, check out Berrien County Fair on Facebook.

Wonders of birth

Baby farm animals on display at fair exhibit By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com

W

hat is birth like? That is the question heard most often by the husband and wife team who run the Wonders of Birth exhibit at the Berrien County Fair. The best way to answer that question, Eric Lee said, is to experience it yourself. “You would be amazed at how many people have never witnessed a live birth before,” said Eric, who runs the exhibit with his wife, Dana. “They are in awe. We have a lot of people standing around waiting to see Mother Nature in action.” The Lees have been superintendents of the exhibit for the past eight years. Their experience includes raising “just about every animal there is” on a Three Oaks farm they owned until just recently. Their children also showed animals for several years at the fair. When the previous superintendent asked them to take the Wonders exhibit over, they accepted. “It is a labor of love and a lot of work,” Eric said. “We love helping educate folks of the county on the mother/baby relationship and the birthing process. We field a lot of questions during the week and are really excited letting people know.” This year’s Wonders of Birth exhibit will feature two stalls filled with two Holstein cows ready to give birth on the day they are at the fair. Once one gives birth, another fills its spot the following day. Eric said it is a 50/50 shot to have one cow give birth on a certain day. Last year they saw four calves and a set of twins. “It’s Mother Nature, so you never know,” he said. When a calf is born it stays with the mother for a while before moving to the “dairy day care” area. At that point, people can gently pet the newborn animal. Eric said they let the mother give birth on her own, unless she needs help. There is also a veterinarian from Andrews University nearby in case of an emergency. Visitors are encouraged to watch the entire birthing process. “We get a very big following every

year on live births — adults and kids alike,” Eric said. The exhibit will also feature: • A beef cow and baby cow • A horse and baby foal • Baby goats • Chicken and chicks • A broody chicken • Two large MSU incubators with more than 100 eggs • MSU veterinarian students • Numerous educational items The Wonders of Birth exhibit is located in Building 8.
