Wheelchair Express Community Emergency Service, Inc came into existence May 5, 1975; the cooperation was made up of both local and municipal leaders within Berrien County. Community Emergency Services, Inc at that time helped to provide local tax support dollars to Action Ambulance for two years and then later provided that same tax support to Rampart Ambulance, as Action Ambulance went out of business. Both of these services were in business at the time and were both private agencies struggling to make payroll and ends meet. Community Emergency Service, Inc had a plan; instead of helping these struggling private services to provide service and still barely getting by, they decided to start a publicly municipally owned service. Medic 1 Ambulance was born out of this frustration of these local leaders with the then current ambulance services. Community Emergency Services, Inc established its DBA Medic 1 Ambulance. Medic 1 Ambulance ran its first call on February 24, 1977 with a small handful of employees and two new ambulances covering ten cities and townships; Medic 1 ran a total of 3,797 calls that first year. In September of 1979, Medic 1 Ambulance rolled out its and the Counties very first ALS unit. During 1980 the very first full year of ALS Medic 1 Ambulance had received 5,550 calls for service and 370 of those calls received ALS intervention. By the mid 80’s Medic 1 Ambulance had gone to an all ALS system.

Servicing Berrien & Parts of Van Buren Counties
In March of 1994, Medic 1 Ambulance began providing wheelchair transportation service to the community. That first month of operation ninety transports were provided. Our commitment to patient care is so strong we had set our goals to make Medic 1 Ambulance the very best. That goal was achieved on September 20, 2000, having earned National Accreditation, becoming only the 77th agency to receive CAAS accreditation in the nation. Having earned CAAS accreditation gives Medic 1 Ambulance the “Gold Standard” in ambulance service. Medic 1 Ambulance is still the only ambulance service within Berrien and Van Buren County’s to have achieved and maintained this “Gold Standard”. Medic 1 Ambulance over its brief history has gone from only one station for ambulances covering a small handful of municipalities providing only basic life support, to what are now five stations with a fleet of vehicles covering twenty cities and townships within Berrien and Van Buren Counties. More than eighty employees provide Advanced Life Support with state of the art equipment, a wheelchair transport service, a full time Dispatch center and a full time Education Department. Medic 1 Ambulance in its humble beginnings ran only those 3,797 and has grown to date responding to more than an 29,000 requests for service each year.

coloma Small Town Charm C
oloma is proud of their vibrant downtown with a variety of great restaurants and places to shop. We are fortunate to have two parks, Laura Baker Park and Baker Park located right in the downtown. They are used in a variety of ways during the many festivals and events that Coloma hosts. Whether volunteers are handing out hot dogs during Halloween in the Park, lighting the beautiful trees during Santa in the Park or setting up a stage for music and fun during Medley in the Park and the Glad Peach Festival, it all takes place in the downtown. The Mayor and Township Supervisor are very supportive of the events and festivals that go on for every season. With the support of the Coloma Township Police Department we keep this a safe and fun environment no matter
what is happening in the community. Sitting in an agricultural fruit belt is an advantage as many visitors and second home residents appreciate the abundance of fresh produce they can enjoy all summer long. When the blossoms are in full bloom in the
orchards that surround Coloma it is a spectacular site. The Coloma DDA is proud of the downtown and works diligently to make sure it stays clean and well maintained. The Public Works department is known for making sure whatever needs to be done for any festival is done quickly. In bad weather, you can be sure our streets are cleared and that downtown merchants ready for business. If you are visiting the Paw Paw Lakes in the summer, riding the bike trails or snowmobiling in the winter we are a destination for every season. If you would like to learn more about doing business in Coloma you can contact North Berrien Community Development at 269-468-4430 for more information.

There are plenty of other activities to take part in right downtown, like the yearly Independence Day weekend celebration that includes a parade, chili cook-off, vintage baseball game, fireworks and a duck race in Flaherty Park. Local residents enjoy activities at beautiful Hays Park with baseball fields, the canoe launch and fishing pier. Winter offers several area snowmobile trails, ice fishing during the coldest of the winter months and there’s always sledding at Hays Park for kids of all ages. Coloma-Watervliet Area Guide 2016-2018
Visit Flaherty Park for its 3-par, nine hole disc golf course that winds through woods and crosses Mill Creek. Be sure to drop a line in the creek and enjoy a lazy afternoon fishing. The Watervliet Area is a wonderful place to live, work and play. Come visit and see for yourself why we really are a tourist destination for all seasons in our beautiful corner of Michigan’s Great Southwest. Watervliet DDA is Pro Business The Watervliet Downtown Development Authority exists to promote a vibrant downtown and to support and

Unwind on the outdoor patio with a craft beer at the Arclight Brewery, which continues to delight residents and visitors. Coloma and Watervliet Destinations for Summer Fun
P
aw Paw Lake and Lake Michigan are one of the many reasons to visit our area for water recreation and summer fun. Take a walk or bike ride down the Regional Multipurpose Trail that goes through Coloma and Watervliet. Local residents take advantage of Hays Park for recreational activities. Flaherty Park, also in Watervliet, is located on Mill Creek and is the perfect place for a family picnic. Younger children will enjoy Coloma’s Randall Park featuring hand-built wooden play structures, playground equipment and a picnic shelter. Paw Paw Lake has some public access and beach areas you can take advantage of. Sunset Beach is located off North Watervliet Rd behind the Paw Paw Lake Board of Trade with parking on Lake Ave. Forest Park Beach is at the foot of Pier Street off of Forest Beach also in Watervliet. Coloma Coloma-Watervliet Area Guide 2016-2018
Township has Helen Street Park with a small sandy beach and picnic area and public boat access to Little Paw Paw. There are two public boat access sites on Big Paw Paw Lake. The East Paw Paw Lake Access is on North Watervliet Rd just off M-140. The West Paw Paw Lake Access is on Island Court, just off Wil O Paw Dr. in Coloma. If you want to plan a day relaxing on Lake Michigan visit Road Side Park with picnic area or Hagar Park with plenty of parking, playground and picnic facilities. They are both located near Coloma off M-63. If it’s camping that suits your fancy, spend time at Dune Lake Campground featuring a small lake and seasonal activities for campers. Visit the Paw Paw River Campground & Canoeing for an afternoon of canoeing, tubing or kayaking. Camp Ronora is a rental facility for retreats, groups and more, nestled on 350 lovely, quiet
acres in Watervliet for you to explore and enjoy. This nature preserve has a secluded private lake, acres of woods, wildlife, pristine pastures and miles of nature trails. If you can’t get enough peace and quiet in your hectic life, visit Sarett Nature Center. This unique nature center has five miles of trails meandering through its 800 acres. Their trail system includes boardwalks, observation platforms, and an easily accessible barrier-free walkway. Trails running along the Paw Paw River bluffs provide great views of the river valley below. Boardwalks and observation platforms in the flood plain give you an up-close look at wetland wildlife and habitats including wet forests, cattail marshes, shrub carrs, and even a unique alkaline wetland called a fen. There are lots of outdoor possibilities in Coloma and Watervliet. So plan a visit you won’t be disappointed. Photo/Kristy Noack 7

Central Assembly of God When you come to Central Assembly of God, you will find a warm and caring atmosphere where people are family and you are accepted just as you are. Before our Sunday service we have coffee & cinnamon rolls in the kitchen, just as if you were home. The service will consist of a time of sharing what God is doing in people’s lives, a time of lifting our needs to God in prayer, a time of worshipping God with music & song, and a time of listening to God’s Word that’s presented in a clear way to help us apply it to our lives. Children are a priority to us and we offer a nursery for children under the age of 3, and for our children, ages 3-9, their own children’s church that takes place during our sermon time. The only dress code is to please come
dressed. We hope you find this a safe place where you can feel accepted and meet Jesus wherever you are in life. At Central you will find real people that love Jesus. Our desire is to help all people grow closer to God, through the love of Jesus. Following Jesus shouldn’t be boring and shouldn’t only consist of sitting in a chair every Sunday morning. Central is a great place to serve God and people both in & out of the church. Do you want to join us in impacting our community with the love of Jesus? I invite you to come, ask questions, and check us out; you may find that you like what you see. You may also want to check out our website at www.CentralAssemblyColoma.com

Watervliet Public Schools — Working Together to Keep Us Together —
W
atervliet Public Schools will prepare all students with the academic and personal skills necessary to become life long learners and productive members of society. Our staff takes great pride in providing all of our students an environment to grow, learn, and enjoy their school experience. This focus on the student dramatically increases the likelihood of success, evident in being named an Academic State Champ by Bridge Magazine, placing Watervliet High School in the top 5% of high schools in Michigan. Athletically, winning is a byproduct of hard work and dedication to ones craft. We do not aim for undefeated seasons, we focus on preparing young people to compete every time they put on a uniform. The focus on core areas of our curriculum take place daily with kids ranging from kindergarten to seniors in high school. In addition, we infuse the arts into our offerings. This well balanced approach gives all students the opportunity to flourish.

Fascinating Facts A
from our Past
few miles from the Lake Michigan shore, the Paw Paw River and Paw Paw Lake are nestled together and this confluence of special waters shaped the area’s past. The Potawatomi inhabited the forest for hundreds of years before American lumbermen arrived in the 1830s, and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi still remain today. Their birch bark canoes traveled the Paw Paw alongside floating lumber from the camp known as “Shingle Diggins,” and pioneers rafting in to carve settlements out of the woods. These bodies of water were named for the native fruit-bearing paw paw tree, ironically, because this was to become one of the oldest areas of commercial fruit farming in Michigan. The first railroad through the area in 1871 is the same route that Amtrak trains take today between Chicago and Grand Rapids. A major spur in Watervliet carried away lumber and later the specialty products of the Watervliet Paper Company. The paper mill employed hundreds of workers for a century, making national-brand magazine covers, can labels, playing cards, stamps, and more. In 1896 another 20
train began summer service along today’s Paw Paw Lake Road especially to carry tourists from downtown Coloma to the lake. As a result, tens of thousands of annual visitors were drawn here mainly from nearby cities and a resort district of hotels, cottages, and seasonal attractions thrived for over fifty years. World-famous musicians performed live at Crystal Palace, a beloved dance hall on the northwest shore of Paw Paw Lake. An electric interurban railway ran hourly trolleys from Benton Harbor to Millburg, Coloma, and Watervliet in the 1910s and 20s. (The old Coloma Interurban Station was recently recognized with a Michigan Historical Marker.) As the lakeshore road towards South Haven was built, Lake Michigan Beach was created in the 1920s by subdividing lands near the Hagar Shore into tiny vacation plots. Red Arrow Highway and Territorial Road were the earliest land routes, and remained the main way to begin to appreciate the truly highways until I-94 and I-196 opened amazing natural and cultural heritage of around 1960. the area. Lake Michigan College Supporting Economic Growth and Quality of Life in Southwest Michigan Consistently voted as the region’s best local college, Lake Michigan College is committed to seeing our region thrive by supporting economic vitality and quality of life through exceptional, accessible training and education, community connections, and opportunities for cultural growth. LMC serves approximately 5,000 students, employers, and community lifelong learners each year through three campuses, a performing arts center, a new technology center, and a commercial teaching winery. They offer over 100 dynamic and innovative academic degree and workforce training certificate programs. More than ever, the economic success of our region is directly tied to employers having access to a well-trained workforce. In fact, within a few short years it is estimated that 60% of available jobs will require some level of education beyond high school. Today, only about one-third of adults in Berrien and Van Buren counties hold an Associate’s degree or higher. LMC is essential to reducing unemployment and underemployment in our region and is constantly creating new opportunities for students in 30 high schools earning early college credits, recent graduates seeking to transfer to four year universities, and adults training for a fast-track career shift. The Hanson Technology Center The new Hanson Technology Center, opening in fall 2016, will reflect the future of manufacturing, attracting a new generation to the industry and providing a steady stream of qualified, ready to work employees who are critical to the success of every manufacturing enterprise. With its modernistic design, open, flexible classrooms and labs, the Center will Coloma-Watervliet Area Guide 2016-2018
retool students’ minds to opportunities in robotics, engineering, mechatronics, and more. Lake Michigan College Wine and Viticulture Technology Program Michigan is the nation’s fourth largest grape-growing state with 117 wineries annually producing 1.4 million gallons of wine. Vineyard area has doubled in the past decade. Lake Michigan College established a new Wine and Viticulture Technology program to meet the wine industry’s needs, and to help wine aficionados turn their passion into careers. Students learn the art, the science, and the business of wine hands-on at the Midwest’s first commercial teaching winery. Graduates can earn an Associate Degree in Enology (winemaking) and Viticulture (grape growing) in as little as one year. Arts, Culture, and Entertainment at The Mendel Center More than 100,000 people come to The Mendel Center each year to be entertained, educated, and enlightened. The Mendel hosts more than 700 events each year from elegant weddings and speeches by former presidents, to smaller business meetings and events. The Mendel Center Mainstage is the crown jewel among performing arts centers in southwestern Michigan. It is recognized for its outstanding acoustic quality, welcoming atmosphere, and good sight lines from each of its 1,500 seats. Notable recent performances include Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast, Grammy-winner Peter Frampton, and Jay Leno. Visit www.lakemichigancollege.edu to learn more about opportunities for employers, students, and community lifelong learners throughout southwest Michigan.
