Spicing up Buchanan Chili Walk returns for 10th year March 9

UCHANAN, Mich. — Winter is about to heat up in southwest Michigan — particularly in downtown Buchanan. The Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Buchanan Meadows Meridian Senior Living, is once again gearing up for arguably the best chili walk in the area. Last year’s event featured more than 30 chili entries, and organizers say the variety was endless. And it wasn’t just 30 pots of traditional chili. Chefs came up with all kinds of creations made with ground beef, steak, turkey, venison, pumpkin and vegetables. This year, the chamber wants the event to be even bigger, and encourages chili cookers to turn in their concoctions for a chance to win the coveted Golden Ladle. On Wednesday, March 9, local businesses and organizations will stand off to see who has the best chili in Buchanan. The public is encouraged to

participate in the sampling, and each attendee may cast a vote for their favorite chili and best named chili. This year, there will be a $2 charge per spoon, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots of Wesners Automotive of Buchanan. Prizes will be awarded for the Judges’ Choice, Peoples’ Choice and BestNamed chilies. This year’s chili challenge will fill downtown in progressive fashion, starting and ending with the Buchanan District Library. Each contestant will be matched up with a local business to showcase both the chili and the place of business. Visitors will have the opportunity go door-todoor sampling chili from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9. Those interested in registering for the contest should contact the Buchanan Area Chamber (269) 695-3291 or bacc@buchanan.mi.us) for an application. There is an entry fee of $20. Entrants may sign up through Feb. 29.

Better wine, great prices

I

f you’ve not yet purchased wine online you’re missing out on some of the best deals in the wine world. Online flash sites like Wines Till Sold Out, Last Bottle Wines, Invino, Cinderella Wine and Underground Cellar offer a unique opportunity for the wine buyer who wants to explore, drink better wine and maintain a modest budget. As a wine journalist I probably have more wine in my home than most. A good guess is that more than half of that wine has been purchased online. Most of these online retailers offer good to great wines at a pretty significant price cut. It’s not unusual to find wines marked down 30 to 70 percent. How do they do it? It’s pretty simple supply and

demand. Sometimes wineries just need some cash flow — even the best wineries. So they’ll sell wines to sites like the ones mentioned above at a reduced rate. In the fall, and particularly close to the holidays, many wineries will start clearing previous vintages and let go of their wines to the discount sellers. I’ve bought wine online for several years now but have never seen buys like the past two months. I’ve recently purchased $40 Oregon Pinot Noir for $16 a bottle. A few weeks back I snagged some Margaux region $50 Bordeaux for $25. Margaux is one of the premier growing sites for Bordeaux wines. With most online sites shipping is free with a minimum purchase. If there is a catch, it’s that one. But

most of the time the minimums are three to four bottles. Online wine purchases might be the best way to improve the quality of wine you’re enjoying for the best possible price. You can find all of the sites mentioned above, and others, with a simple Google search. My personal favorites are Last Bottle Wines and WTSO. I have bought wine from all of those listed. I’m taking a group to Burgundy, France, this summer on my second Grape Sense wine trip – June 11-19. We’ll spend five nights in Beaune, the heart of Burgundy, and three free days in Paris. If you want to know more, check it out on my blog or write me at my email below. Registration deadline is end of February. The

‘Becoming Made’ Prints, film to be celebrated Feb. 12

S

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Mary Brodbeck’s woodblock prints will be featured in The Gallery at Harbor Shores located at The Inn at Harbor Shores through April 25. Brodbeck’s art is inspired by the Great Lakes and Michigan landscape through the aesthetic lens of her studies in Japan. A reception for Mary will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, with wine and hors d’oeuvres compliments of The Inn. A feature of the reception is a screening of Mary’s 35-minute documentary film, “Becoming Made.” As both filmmaker and artist, Brodbeck turns the camera on her own artistic process capturing the composition, vivid colors, and sense of otherworldliness that still intrigue lovers of Japanese prints. “Becoming Made” is a rare look at how an artist makes and is made by her environment and her art. Alongside a demonstration of making a woodblock print in the Japanese tradition, the film offers a glimpse into the searching mind of the artist as she observes and interprets the coastal landscapes of Michigan and seascapes of the Great Lakes. “Becoming Made” was completed in 2014 earning the prestigious “Award of Merit Special Mention” from The Best Shorts Film Competition, and is deemed “Highly Recommended”

by Video Librarian. All Mary’s works are for sale along with DVDs and art cards, which will be available at the reception and throughout the exhibition. A Michigan native, Mary Brodbeck began her formal training at Michigan State University in Industrial Design. After several years in the West Michigan furniture industry, she left the corporate environment to become a full-time artist and subsequently traveled to Japan to learn woodblock print-

making. Through the aesthetic lens of her studies in Japan and the prints of Hiroshige and Hokusai, Brodbeck’s art is inspired by the landscape she still calls home. Her prints are celebrated for their calm aesthetic and Zen-like qualities and are in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts as well as many private and corporate collections worldwide. Describing her work, Mary says, “I make Great Lakes inspired woodblock

prints in the Japanese tradition. Affected by my travel and study in Japan, notably by visiting traditional Japanese gardens, my landscape prints are carefully designed in abstract and stylized ways that are intended for viewers to have a contemplative experience. “The process of making them is also a meditative practice for me. The inspiration behind my work as well as the creative process itself is explored in my documentary film, ‘Becoming Made.’”

‘Winter is spring for the soul’ Cold weather brings unique entertainment opportunities

W

ith last week’s Groundhog Day giving the signal for an early spring, many rejoiced that the end of winter may soon be in sight. As one who prefers the local charms of the warmer months, including sunshine days on the back porch and early morning runs without the fear of ice patches, I count myself among them. However, I must also point to the number of pleasures one may find during the winter. With landscaping and yard activities unavailable to occupy our time, we have the chance to enjoy forgotten amusements. We are free to spend long days playing board games and reading books, all while watching the snow blowing outside the window. Turn off the shuffle, turn on the record player and rediscov-

er the pleasure of playing an entire album. Take the time to sit and truly listen to the music and remember it as more than just the background soundtrack to our lives. When on your own, I suggest donning headphones, reading liner notes and sitting cross-legged on the floor, if you can manage. If you have company, then grab your loved ones and dance. the recycling bin. Try your hand at writing. Recognize the hidden treasures in your own home. One should not mistake winter as a time for indoor activities alone, however. My favorite time to experience the dunes and beaches of Southwestern Michigan is when they are frozen and snow covered. From Warren Dunes to Grand Mere State Parks, hiking trails reveal an entirely new landscape, one where absent leaves and growth allow views from the hilltops of distances no other time of year would grant. The treasures hidden throughout those grounds the rest of the year stand open to the explorer. The grand surface waters of Lake Michigan rest frozen in ice, giving the appearance of a snapshot in time. The shorelines of the Great Lakes are wondrous at any time of year, but the colder months hold a special place in my heart. Further from the shore, the outdoor options continue. The small inland lakes provide ice fisherman endless locations to angle. Local parks such as Love Creek and Russ Forest offer locations for snow shoeing and cross country skiing. Those with a penchant for speed will find skiing of a different sort on the slopes of Swiss Valley. With chafed hands, cars to uncover, and driveways

Justin Flagel to shovel, it can be easy to focus solely on negatives of winter and cheer for it’s end. We must remember the pleasures it offers and the opportunities it provides. Instead of lamenting how difficult it is to take the dog for a walk, head to the backyard and frolic with your pet in the snow. Find the beauty in the cold. Take the signal from the universe to slow down, turn inward, and reflect. Hundreds came out to the business district to enjoy the sights, as well as to catch some of the annual activities, such as the Chili Crawl and Carve-Off at Beckwith Park.
