Executive Officer's Message
PRIDE. It is with great pride that in 2015 we celebrate 10 years of Leadership Ballarat and Western Region (LBWR) and recognise the many people who have shaped, guided and participated in our flagship leadership program. Each year LBWR supports the development of leaders who are responsive to community needs and together make a real difference to the community in which they live. The overarching difference about the experience we provide is that through our networks we are able to open doors to provide a broad understanding of what is taking place in our backyard. It is about thinking differently, thinking creatively and making connections to enable collaboration.

Volunteerism is at the heart of who we are as a community. It is about our commitment to make a difference to the lives of others and to do so without financial gain. We are rewarded by the joy that it brings and the hope that life can be different and better. In 2015 our Alumni are currently supporting 190 community organisations in various positions: as board and committee members, in project support, as mentors, by raising awareness or raising funds and by on-the-ground delivery of events.

Every graduate of the Leaders Forum program has a story to tell and each story is unique. We are proud of the impact that each graduate has in the community and we say thank you for giving what you can – to quote Father Bob Maguire, “time, money or care”. Our return on investment back to the community during the 10-year period is valued at more than $8,266,005*. This year we were nominated in the “community strengthening” category of the City of Ballarat Community Safety Awards focusing on bringing people together. Over two days in June more than 2,700 people attended Rug Up Ballarat raising more than $3,700 for the Uniting Care Breazeway meals program. This project is a success because it creates a safe, warm and inviting space during

winter for people to come together and interact over arts' based activities, building community through the collaboration of organisations and artists to present an engaging and inclusive experience for all involved. The strength of LBWR is in our connected community – including our participants, sponsors, employers, learning partners, all tiers of government, community organisations, businesses across Ballarat and the western region – working together. Each year we are grateful to the many people who share their stories as community and business leaders to shape the future. We were saddened to hear of the passing of Stella Young who spoke at our 2014 graduation. Stella’s presentation focused on making the most of every opportunity that comes your way, having fun and taking risks, she said “I'm already really proud. But I promise to keep practising, every day”. Pride is such an important part of a community and the way you approach problems, change and embrace diversity as the norm. Deb Melira our 2014 Bank Australia Indigenous Scholarship recipient reflected for our National Volunteer publication that “Leaders come from all walks of life. As the leader you need to be able to empower people to stand up and advocate for what they believe in. The most important thing that I have learnt is that it is ok to be me. No matter where I am, I will continue to empower my people to stand up for their basic human rights. My hope for the future is that my children will live in a world free of racism and hatred and with equality to live happy, healthy, safe and successful lifestyles.” So to all our presenters, graduates, supporters and the wonderful community that surrounds us, let’s be proud of the future we build together, thank you and here’s to 2016…

But while ‘headline’ leadership – at least in the political sphere – appears to be struggling, the fundamentals of grassroots leadership have not changed. Communities need people who show initiative, who recognise that just doing their day job is not enough to make a community prosper and who understand that leadership is a process of modelling change for the better and influencing others to strive towards change. This year LBWR celebrates its tenth year of facilitating leadership development in Ballarat and the Western Region. We don’t create leaders; every person who undertakes the Leaders Forum is already capable, aspirational and community-spirited. We help them to understand themselves and their community better and to channel their energies as effectively as possible. The State Government, to its very great credit, renewed its funding for Victorian community leadership programs this year. This was a very welcome development for us and ensures a solid funding base for the next four years.
The Committee for Ballarat, LBWR and the Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs Secretariat are to be commended for their excellent work in securing bi-partisan funding pledges at the last election that led to this result. Despite the government’s generous support, we continue to rely on the contributions of sponsors and supporting employers. Thank you for seeing the bigger picture and investing in the future of your community. My personal thanks goes to the staff of LBWR, ably led as always by Sofia Fiusco, for another great year. I also thank all members of the LBWR Committee and Committee for Ballarat Board members for their time, energy and sage insight throughout the year. It is tempting to think that leadership is becoming a disposable commodity across the globe. Malcolm Turnbull recently became Australia’s fifth Prime Minister in less than eight years. Victoria has its fourth Premier in less than five years. Both Victoria and Queensland have recently dismissed one-term governments. In the US, political leaders seem more bent on mutual destruction than on constructive collaboration.

2015 Participant Reflections Stephen Allen Project Manager | Nicholson Construction This year provided me with a detailed understanding of how to affect change within the community. I saw the program as an excellent opportunity to broaden my professional network as well as strengthen my leadership skills, which it delivered in spades. Having no expectations leading into the program, the opportunities and experiences gained were remarkable. Were it not for LBWR I would have never experienced the vast majority of these opportunities. By engaging in the community and exposing ourselves to the challenges faced by a variety of organisations, I have developed an incredible understanding of the process in facilitating change and the passion to do so. Putting all of the above aside, the greatest benefit to me in what has been one the most challenging year of my life both personally and professionally, is the support network I have developed. Whether it be through guest speakers, my learning partner, the other participants or Sofia herself, the growth in my strength, development and self-awareness can be largely accredited to the Leaders Forum program. I am extremely grateful to Richard and Dean my sponsors and Sofia and the LBWR team.

It has exposed me to a diverse range of community issues that I previously would not have given a thought to and has provided me with a sense of connectedness. Through character building exercises and exposure to community challenges, I have grown both professionally and personally. It has been a privilege to meet and listen to some truly inspirational pillars in our society who have shown me that successes can be measured on all scales and anything is possible if you have the determination to stick with it. I have spent the past year learning alongside a diverse group of people who have provided me with a great foundation of network opportunities and the confidence to continue growing my leadership skills and to make a difference in my community. I am incredibly grateful to my employer Sovereign Hill for giving me this opportunity to be a part of such an inspirational program and I thank Sofia and the LBWR Committee for providing such a life-changing experience.

The program has allowed me to understand people a lot better and has given me the ability to work and communicate more effectively with different personalities. The program is very broad and allows you to think about what impact you can have and gives you better leadership skills to be able to make a difference. I entered the program hoping to be challenged to develop myself as a leader. I have often felt that leadership sat well with me but I wanted to embrace it and develop it professionally as well as personally. Not only did the program allow me to do just that, it also taught me a whole lot more. The topics were varied and challenging in themselves and the post program day discussions have made my thinking more robust than it was before. Being able to engage with other community leaders and professionals has opened my eyes to a wide range of community issues and ways to get involved and help make a difference. It's also developed my interpersonal skill set through dealing with a far more diverse group of individuals than I have before. This experience has taught me a lot about what community means to people. I knew what it meant for me, but to experience and witness how others use and engage their support networks and how they identify themselves was powerful. Taking steps to impact change was also rewarding, signing the Violence Against Women charter and lending my support to a range of great causes such as mental health were key outcomes. Making the trip to Canberra and seeing the leaders of our nation in action was a wonderful experience and the War Memorial was a special and humbling experience that I will never forget.

Filip Cannizzaro Customer Service & Ballarat Region Manager | Selkirk Brick PTY LTD I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the program and, while I didn’t have any expectations, it has truly been an amazing journey with very rewarding attributes both personally and professionally. The opportunity to listen to a vast range of speakers, be it about their story/career or their view/insights on leadership and leadership styles was quite significant for me, re-affirming some of my thoughts and encouraging me to delve into other perspectives. Working with a Learning Partner was one of the most significant opportunites for me – he guided me through an area that helped me learn more about myself, challenge myself, develop a strategy and understand strategic thinking and how to work in a collaborative manner. I have learnt more about my community and the great organisations, both profit & non-profit, in our region and the great work they do. The program has given me a deeper insight into some of the more complex issues and challenges we face. In other instances I was encouraged by the passionate people with the dedication to pursue their areas of connection to make a difference. The program highlighted topics that helped me think in more depth about the big issues of global warming, economic development, social equality and review these topics through group discussion. It has been a great networking forum and the friendships and connections I have developed are invaluable.
Peter Field Coordinator Catchments | Central Highlands Water My LBWR year has led me through doors that I would not normally open. The connections that grew between my peers have expanded beyond our meetings to provide real opportunities in my life. While balancing work and family life, the program learnings have triggered deeper understanding and thought to my life in Ballarat and Western Region. This has improved the way I communicate, network and participate in relationships and organisations. Some things come along in life at the right time and for me 2015 has inspired me to review personal goals and competing demands in my life. This inevitably caused reflection on what is important to me individually and within a community. We all wish for better things in life. The program has demonstrated to me that when we work together with insight and patience and a common vision better outcomes are delivered. As a parent of children growing up in our community I feel empowered to share these lessons to build the capability and resilience for future generations.
Nikki Foy Koorie Engagement Support Officer | Department of Education | Bank Australia Scholarship The program has provided me with the opportunity to build and create long-lasting relationships within the wider Ballarat community and with people who share a passion for our great city. The program has opened my eyes to many different leadership styles and thinking and doing things differently. My professional growth this year has been rewarding and has provided me with opportunities to participate in discussions that influence outcomes. The program has given me the confidence to challenge and ask questions and have open and honest conversations. I feel empowered and determined to go into the future believing I can not only be part of the change that I want to see but to also be involved in creating change. I have in some sense questioned my style of leadership and the way I go about my business, I feel more confident in myself as a leader. I have become stronger and richer for being a participant in the program and I would encourage people from all walks of life to have a conversation with someone who has participated and step outside your comfort zone, because I did and I found out it was just what I needed I have a new found insight and appreciation of what it means to be a leader in Ballarat and I am a proud LBWR participant. I would also like to thank Bank Australia for providing the Indigenous Scholarship, my workplace for approving my leave and most of all Deb Milera for nominating and believing in me.
John Frdelja Acting Manager Strategic Asset Management and Planning | Central Highlands Water The program was a unique opportunity to explore the things that rock my leadership cradle, the hand, head and heart. These are the places that my leadership style stems from. The handshake is a valuable offering that conveys trust, respect and equality. I use it freely and openly to welcome all. It only lasts a fleeting moment but a gentle handshake, accompanied with a big smile and a welcoming look can create a long-lasting impression that fosters sharing and understanding. The head can guide us toward finding solutions and making improvements, but clashing heads tends to block those pathways. I try to listen, understand all points of view, carefully consider things and take the time to process information. Embracing difference and bringing minds together is much more powerful than head butting one another. The heart can motivate, inspire and bring out our passionate best, but it can also make us look like parochial tosspots. I mostly use my heart to guide my values and support my inner cradle. I find this much easier (and tidier) than wearing my heart on my sleeve. I know that a leadership cradle that holds hand, head and heart in balance is truly irresistible. I hope to find that sort of equilibrium one day!
The program has opened my eyes and heart to a new community. Although I was participating as a representative of the Pyrenees Shire, it is the knowledge I have gained in the city next door that will help me move more fluidly in my own community. I look forward to introducing my community to the incredible network of folks I have been exposed to in Ballarat and beyond. It will be the sharing of ideas that I will take home. Also I have to say I was unprepared for the job that I would be employed in when I joined the program. The role I ended up in benefited immensely from the connections I have made within the group. Where I had thought I would have time to be a good volunteer, I ended up with a very large workload and recruited volunteers from my 'LBWR team'. Tables turned and I am very grateful for receiving help. As a non-local I have been truly impressed by the amazing collection of people in the area who are dedicated to improving our worlds. The diverse passions that folk have are also inspiring. There has really been something for everyone in the program and I would say that I have found a passion in helping out in the political field. I look forward to supporting campaigns in our next round of local government elections to ensure that we have fair and reasonable representation/ Thanks to Sofia for all her incredible leadership (and volunteering)!

2015 Participant Reflections Chris Gardner Senior Recreation Planning Advisor | City of Ballarat The opportunity to participate in the program was one that I am very grateful for and I cannot express how much it has impacted me over the past 12 months. It has certainly challenged me and opened my eyes to some serious community issues that we not only currently face, but are likely to encounter in the future. It has highlighted to me the importance of community participation and advocacy in enabling us to have an impact on the future of our region. Our future is bright and, although we as community leaders need to focus on the areas of need, it is exciting to be able to share, discuss and explore the endless possibilities that exist for the future. Being involved with such a dynamic and diverse group of passionate individuals from across our region certainly has had a significant influence on my perspective of our community and has challenged my thinking and views on particular topics. Most of all the program has enabled me to learn more about myself and develop new skills and has encouraged me to have a voice. Although I feel my leadership journey is only beginning, I believe the program has equipped me well to navigate my way forward and have a positive impact on the future of our community. I look forward to an ongoing affiliation with the LBWR 2015 alumni and broader community network.
Sarah Glyde Deputy Manager Wendouree UFS | UFS Dispensaries The program provided me with an understanding of the value of strong leadership and advocacy within a community. Through the course of the year I was able to explore what being a leader really meant to me and how I could display this in my professional and personal life. The program has given me unique access to our community and a new appreciation for its complexity. The opportunity to connect with such a diverse range of people allowed opinions and beliefs to be shared and challenged, creating engaging discussions throughout the year. Being young and early in my career initially made me hesitant to voice my opinion, however as the year went on, I realised the range of backgrounds, ages and experience of our group is what made the experience most valuable. I feel I have developed a confidence in my ability to influence and create change as an authentic leader and that is never limited by a title or job description. I now have a greater understanding of the value and role of a community leader and the ability we have to create great change.

It has broadened my perspective and understanding of a range of complex issues and the challenges that our community must face to drive real change that makes a difference. One of the most engaging aspects of the program was hearing from the passionate people who work or volunteer their time in various community spaces. I found this both inspiring and confronting, especially when you realise that there are so many issues right on our doorstep that just need people to care enough to help out in some way. The program has been a great way to make new connections and really rewarding on a personal and professional front, introducing me to an amazing group of program participants who are all leaders in their own way. They have inspired me with their personal stories, experiences and goals for the future. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the program and look forward to putting what I’ve learned into action in the future!

Going into the program I expected to partner with a great mentor, meet new people from a cross-section of Western Region’s business community and be provided with opportunities to develop my personal skills and abilities. The program strongly delivered on these points and if that’s all I got from the program I would have thought it a well worthwhile exercise. What I didn’t expect to gain was meaningful insight in the area of our region’s marginalised and disadvantage residents. Working in Asset Management my focus is on facts and figures and how they relate to physical assets, and I admit I had not considered how I impact those who are disadvantaged. Through the program’s excursions, activities and opportunities for personal interaction, my awareness of social disadvantage has increased markedly. Already I find myself actively seeking ways to support positive social change in my current role and I look forward to this continuing into the future.
Michelle Emma James Director + Architect | Here Studio | Peter Davies Scholarship It is such an exciting time to be living and working in regional Victoria, and especially in Ballarat. As a relatively new resident and a small business owner, I wanted to participate in the program to meet new people and find out more about what was happening in the local community. What I have come out with is not only a strong understanding of the incredible assets (people, organisations, places) in our community but also a greater insight into who I am and who I want to be - I have been encouraged, challenged, deeply affected, inspired and called to action. The program has nurtured my appreciation and passion for regional Victoria, equipped me with leadership skills that I can use both professionally and personally, and given me the confidence to become an ambassador, advocate, active participant and contributor in our community. Thank you to Sofia and the LBWR team, Committee for Ballarat and to Samantha Davies for giving me the opportunity to participate in the program through the Peter Davies Scholarship. I am grateful to all the program sponsor organisations and guest speakers who generously give to the program to make it the amazing experience that it is. Caitlin Larcombe Domain Sales Representative & Digital Sales Support | The Courier Right from the beginning of the program I have been challenged to consider things I had never thought about before and from perspectives I had never looked at; challenged to step out of my comfort zone, try new things and make a difference; challenged to do it all with a diverse group of people I had never met; and challenged to act on what I learned in each session and apply it to daily activities at work and in the community. Gaining deep insight into issues from the perspective of experts or people who were living the scenarios presented has been incredibly enlightening. Sessions with my Learning Partner Susie have helped me to expand my knowledge further and to expand my own perspective to further understand the issues I have encountered. I would never have experienced this if not for the program and I am so grateful to have had the privilege of taking part. I now feel more deeply connected with my own community and am exploring various ways that I can use what I have learned to help make the world a better place. And as for the people I had never met, they now feel like old friends.
Shirlene Laurie Senior Foster Care Practitioner | Child and Family Services Inc To say that this past year has been inspirational, rewarding and amazing still does not put into words the personal and professional growth I have experienced by participating in the program. Coming from the welfare field, I have always been passionate about developing change for those within our community who are disadvantaged, and I knew that to do this I needed to be more aware of the reasons behind disadvantage. I also needed to know how the 'bigger picture' influenced what happens within our community. The program further developed my understanding of the complex issues and challenges within our community on a larger scale than I could ever imagine. While it challenged me as an individual leader, it also encouraged me to look at how, as a leader, I can influence, encourage and support a community who wants to make change; how I can be a part of something bigger. During my journey I met inspirational people within our community who are at the forefront of developing and supporting change, not just locally but nationally and internationally. I was challenged, encouraged and supported in my own growth. The knowledge gained and connections made are invaluable. If there is any one thing that has come out of this for me it is that my own journey and the journey of the community has just begun.
Joy O'Brien Safety, Quality & Production Support Coordinator | Steel Frame Solutions I was provided the wonderful opportunity to participate in the leadership program and learn about our community in a broader sense. The exposure I gained from parts of the community that I may never otherwise have been given the chance to learn about, expanded my vision for the opportunity to be more involved in the community in a voluntary capacity. There are a multitude of opportunities to participate in activities that can make a difference. The challenge now lays ahead in becoming a more active participant in the community and reaching out to involve more people in the process. Some of the tasks were quite challenging, including sharing thoughts about myself with the group. I learned that how I see myself is not necessarily how other people see me. It was a valuable learning experience that dares to make you more self aware and highlights your strengths and weaknesses.
Having the opportunity to participate in the program was a real privilege both personally and professionally. The opportunity to explore themes of leadership, community, participation and personal growth within my own community and with local professionals has been very rewarding and importantly, lots of fun. The supportive, LBWR syndicate/family structure meant that learning, discussion and action were all conducted in a totally supportive atmosphere-what a great model for ongoing community action! Standing up in my community and saying, "Yes I will help, yes I want to help, yes I can help," is a privilege not afforded to all. I am always very thankful that I am one of those "yes" people. My commitment to seeing Ballarat grow and flourish at an individual and community level has been reinforced greatly this year; I know that my individual contribution and support of others to succeed and do well is important to our combined well-being. I am honoured and grateful to have received the Bug Blitz Arts Scholarship this year that enabled my participation. I really value the opportunity it has given me to promote the importance and relevance of the arts in the wider community and also to bring an artists point of view to group discussions and action. As part of the creative industry, I believe it is always important to view problem-solving within a wider context; as Albert Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them �.
Christopher Prehn Business Solutions Manager | Vicwest Community Telco When I started the program I was unsure how much benefit I would receive from it. I was already involved in community activities and thought that perhaps the program would help create further contacts and relationships with community members that could benefit the community activities I was involved in. I can honestly say that this program is more then just a networking opportunity. It has allowed me to see how important it is to keep communities going and, more importantly, how vital it is to have strong community leaders. I have been inspired by the leaders I have met, from the school teachers at Yuille Park who are far more than just teachers, to the independent members in Parliament who are prepared to be a voice for their community. There was never a program day that I walked away from, that didn't make me rethink or re-energise my passion for my community. I have also made friends with some truly passionate people within the group who I think will one day be leaders in our community.

2015 Participant Reflections Dougal Purcell Regional Manager Agriculture Services & Biosecurity - Grampians Region | Victorian State Government The program has been an awesome opportunity to explore the key social and economic issues in our region and to consider the role and importance of community and its leadership in addressing opportunities and challenges. For me, the program provided an excellent insight into some of the key limitations for economic growth in the region and demonstrated how government, business and community need to work together to capture the opportunities and address the challenges. Each and every program day broadened my perspective on social issues within our community on their complex nature and on how passionate people in a professional or volunteer role can have such a strong and positive impact. The program brought together a diverse group of talented individuals who have challenged and inspired each other and the friendships and professional networks will remain well into the future.

Throughout the leadership program I have been exposed to parts of the community that aren’t always apparent in my world. I have been exposed to personalities and points of view that have challenged and ultimately shaped my way of thinking. Through closer examination of unresolved challenges that affect our community, the program has provided a platform for personal growth and understanding. The opportunity to hear from local and federal political leaders, to undertake two-way dialogue with active community and business leaders and to reflect on issues with a diverse group of future leaders has provided both professional development and an insight into the drive and passion that can turn positive thoughts into action. The program has not only offered new effective leadership skills and techniques but also a window into the social, sporting, political, volunteering and commercial world where they can be deployed to have a positive impact.

I expected the program to improve my leadership skills which it definitely has. However what I did not expect is the personal growth. Every program day has made me question my beliefs and opened my eyes to different areas that make up our community. It is very easy to sit on the fence and comment on how to make our community better. This program educates and equips you with the skills to be able to make it happen. The diversity of the content is amazing. We have covered topics such as local government processes, issues around unemployment and disadvantaged, tourism and agriculture as well as specific content such as wellbeing and supporting your workforce. This varied content has made me better informed about the community and has been instrumental in making me a better leader. Armed with the additional knowledge and skills and the new connections I have made, I feel that even as an individual I can make a positive impact in our community.

The program has broadened my understanding of areas within the community, some of which I had not experienced previously. It has given me a deeper understanding and holistic view of what makes a community healthy and what is necessary to ensure we thrive into the future. We have all been enlightened at different levels as a result of the workshops and issues we have been exposed to but also, maybe more importantly, from each other. The space that has been created with the group is one of honesty and respect it has encouraged an open-minded approach to different topics and opinions which, in turn, has created space for innovation. And all of this plays a huge role in positive leadership. One of the most valuable things I have learned personally from both our group and our learnings is the power of checking in with others and the impact this can have on a single person which in turn impacts the whole community. My favourite session was the discussion around future thinking. This session really opened my eyes to possibilities for change by way of servicing basic needs and the dramatic difference this can make to a person's decision making ability. There are so many things I have learned this year and I look forward to where this training will lead me and how I can best serve my community into the future.

It has been an amazing experience and I have learnt a lot about myself and about the real issues facing communities in our region. The program has been enormously stimulating and thought provoking and has given me the opportunity to consider how I can best use my skills to support the issues in my community that I am passionate about.
April Ure Assistant Revenue Officer | Pyrenees Shire Council I always wanted to make the world a better place for my daughter's generation and this program has provided me with a unique opportunity to explore the economic, health and social make-up of the community which I have only recently joined. Through honest and robust discussions our group has evolved and I have made amazing friendships with a diverse group of people that I otherwise wouldn't have met. The program has given me the opportunity to mix up my daily routine and discover the issues that affect my community on a deeper level. As a group we have been given access to people whom we wouldn't ordinarily get to speak with and discuss topics with them that I never imagined I would get to voice an opinion on. I have been encouraged and unconditionally supported by my LBWR peers to take steps to further develop my skills which, in turn, will allow me to give more of myself back to my community. The program has provided me with the start of my journey; now I get to put it into action and hopefully make Ballarat and the Western Region a better place for the future.
Barbara White Clinical Nurse Consultant & Credentialed Diabetes Educator | Ballarat Health Services The program has been a source of networks and a belief in the spirit of like-minded humans. The participants are from varied backgrounds and have provided me with insights to community living beyond health. The group has challenged my thinking in a safe and caring environment. I am grateful to each participant for the richness and authenticity they bought to our group. The diversity of learning has been wonderful. The speakers have been passionate and committed to their area of interest. I have always been incredibly grateful for volunteers and I worried that with our ageing population, this group may diminish. I was inspired to see another generation of volunteers and people caring for the community. The values that we considered the most important for leadership were integrity and authenticity. At times I did feel there was a theory practice gap. I look at leadership in politics and workplaces and I believe these values are at times in conflict with our chosen values. One guest presenter added value to this reflection for me. She challenged the notion that: 'You have to work with the leader of the day whether or not you share their values' I believe this begs the question, is the leader or the community the most important when it comes to driving decisions and outcomes? The answer lies in the word community; the leader is part of a community, a community can choose to follow or challenge the leader. The outcome depends on the commitment to the cause and the importance of the outcome.

I started this year without any preconceived ideas. I didn’t know what I would gain or learn. I was simply open to fresh experiences, thoughts and people. As a result it has been a wonderful adventure of the new, moving me beyond my comfort zone many times. I relished being exposed to such a broad range of ideas and angles of thought. Both presenters and participants have pushed my ideas and beliefs. I am amazed how many times I have formed an opinion only to have it challenged or changed by the group or speaker. I have also gained a much deeper understanding of our political system and the mechanisms of government. I realised in Canberra I was most impressed by the people who had passion. They were alive, connected and committed to their core purpose. I believe a great leader is someone who can practise deep listening and who has the confidence to change their mind for the greater good. At the same time being able to stand by their convictions beyond the desire to please everyone. It’s a juggling act! My biggest discovery this year has been self-recognition. Identifying the inherent skills I have and use in my life each day. My perception of what a leader is was based on something political, bigger or grander. The program has stretched my thinking and made me realise that I am already a leader! My next journey is to continue to learn, build, expand and grow my skills, leading whenever I can.
The program has meant many things to me. Leadership comes from your head, but means so much more when it comes from your heart and is used to actively participate in and lend your 'hands' to the process of change. Working with the community every day I felt I had a good awareness of the challenges that we face as communities and some of the ways that we can address those issues. However what I did learn over and over again was that people are strong and can accomplish amazing things together. Together we are powerful and stronger than government and organisations. I feel like sometimes we wait for others to do things for us when we as a community can affect our own town's, future and present circumstances. Connecting with others on a regular basis has taught me that we all share similar challenges and that if we pool our resources and share thoughts we can make positive impacts.
