SCHOLARSHIPS AT LEADERSHIP WA Strong leadership development is vital to the functioning of our State, and we believe it should not be reserved only for the sectors, organisations, and individuals with the financial means to participate. In 2021, over $228 900 in scholarships supported 25 individuals, an increase of $136 000 on 2020. We are proud to offer a range of scholarship opportunities, supporting our mission to develop and enable courageous leaders, for the benefit of themselves, their organisations and the community. “The Leadership WA Signature Leadership program provided me with an opportunity to build my capacity as a leader. It has shown me my weaknesses and strengths but, more importantly, it has given me a platform as an Aboriginal leader to express my values and history through truth telling. I will take back to my communities the self-knowledge of becoming a better leader, the relationships built with other participants on the Program, and the people we have met on our journey throughout Western Australia.” Lindsay Dean 2021 Signature Leadership Program Regional Aboriginal Leadership Development Scholarship Recipient Dean Communications

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DAYS

IMPACTING COURAGEOUS LEADERS “It has been a privilege to be a part of the 2021 Signature Leadership Program. The Program has had a profound personal impact in terms of my perspective on WA’s social issues, reconciliation and equity. Leadership WA has provided an opportunity for me to hear from outstanding leaders, work with an inspirational cohort and reflect on what is truly important in business and life.

“The Signature Program provides a unique and invaluable opportunity to come together with a diverse group of leaders and broaden your perspective on the challenges we face as a state. The time dedicated to the Program is an incredibly worthwhile investment in your own development, that will help you grow as a leader and be at your most effective to contribute in a meaningful way to our society.

The Program has given me the gift of understanding more about myself as a leader, what drives me and why. I have particularly enjoyed the focus on questioning, the concept of Leadership Philosophy and maintaining an open mind. The important discussions involving Inclusion and Diversity, Justice, Health, Ethical Leadership and Education combined with regional field trips and the fellowship of new friends has made this an enjoyable and unique experience that I would wholeheartedly recommend.”

The learnings from the Program will extend well beyond the completion of the formal experiences, as will the ongoing support resulting from the connections and close relationships that are developed through the Program. I feel very grateful for the privilege of being in a leadership position and the opportunity to participate in the LWA program so that my contributions can have an even more powerful influence in shaping a positive future for Western Australia.”

IMPACTING COURAGEOUS LEADERS

“The Rising Program was fantastic, it provided me with the space and mental clarity to go on a 6-month journey of self-discovery. During this time, I was able to reflect on my leadership journey so far, the type of leader I aspire to be and then implement learnings in real-time. Our cohort was invaluable, we created a safe space to share, challenge and grow together creating bonds that endure well after our graduation. Most of all, after 6 months I was able see how much my leadership skills and confidence had grown.” Emma Eltringham 2021 March Rising Leadership Program Product Manager, Woodside Energy

“I applied to the Rising Leadership Program as I was attracted to the idea of working towards being a better leader, not just a better manager. From the first experience, I found the speakers to be of incredible calibre, and I’ve taken on several practical pieces of advice and tools which I’m already using in my workplace. By far the best part of the Program has been the relationships I’ve developed with the other participants. It’s been a special experience spending time with a cohort of like-minded people who are on the same leadership journey, and I’m looking forward to continuing these friendships well into the future.” Scott Bryant 2021 July Rising Leadership Program Operations Manager, Pacific Automation

2021 BGHS Cohort Graduation

TAILORED SOLUTIONS Our tailored leadership development solutions focus on enhancing leadership skills that create sustainable change and growth within an organisation. Each Tailored Solution is a bespoke program designed to meet each organisation’s unique demands, challenges, culture and values.

CASE STUDY – BEGA GAMBIRRINGU HEALTH SERVICE

“The bespoke leadership programs will have a significantly positive impact on the future workplace culture at BGHS. The content and quality was exactly what I was looking for.”

The CEO of Bega Garnbirringu Health Service (BGHS) approached Leadership WA to design, develop and deliver a three-tier leadership program for its Executive, Senior Managers, and Team Leaders. It was determined that the Senior Managers and Team Leaders would be the first two groups to benefit from leadership development.

Clive Holt (Signature 2020) Chief Executive Officer Bega Gambirringu Health Service

Australian Red Cross – Prison Program

BGHS wanted to develop a new approach to leadership training which would build a learning culture at all levels to enhance capability and leadership consistency. There was recognition that in the past, training had been haphazard and ‘as you need it’, which didn’t necessarily allow for a consistency in learning. The idea was also based around the ideal for all leaders to learn the same thing at the same time so that they could practice that learning and support each other in the application.

IN 2021 WE DEVELOPED BESPOKE SOLUTIONS FOR:

CASE STUDY – WA POLICE In 2021, Leadership WA was asked by the Western Australian Police Force (WAPOL) to design a bespoke leadership program for the Infringement Team Leaders. The aim was to support these staff members in developing personal leadership, while increasing their understanding of team dynamics and improving on clear communication in the context of difficult conversations. This Tailored Solution, spanning 6 half day sessions, addressed the following specific learning outcomes stipulated by the Western Australian Police Force: • Discovering their Personal Leadership – role of bias and ethics in leadership • Exploring their role as a manager and a leader • Understanding leadership within the context of WAPOL • Incorporating good communication to all situations • Analysing the complexity of change and how to lead through uncertain times • Wellness and self – resilience, stress, and emotional intelligence Challenges were faced throughout the program, in relation to COVID-19 lockdowns and social distancing requirements. Through on-line channels we maintained consistent leadership development, through a range of shared resources, pre-work, and Ted Talks.

Leadership WA also worked with the Change Management team to create an effective session that looked at the future direction of WAPOL with reference to the ADKAR model, focusing on individual change as an agent of organisational action. The group engaged in a book club, exploring Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead, which created good discussion and along with the PRINT® profiling insights, assisted in the creation of common language within the group. We will continue to support the Western Australian Police Force with their leadership outcomes in 2022. Participants’ comments included: “For me, a major part of the course was the PRINT® profile to understand how the different people we work with think and function. The whole course was very beneficial in my opinion. It also provided the leadership group with an opportunity to know each other better as we don’t usually spend much time together.” “I understand that there are many personality types and each of those acts and respond differently. I am more open and aware, and also more conscious of what triggers me. I am inspired to put my new and refreshed skills into practice.”

COMMUNITY IMPACT This year, Alumni and Program participants have once again offered their time, skills and leadership to assist WA’s not-for-profit organisations. Alumni answered the call through Leadership WA’s Skillsbank initiative, becoming Board Members and Mentors, as well as expertly providing advisory support in the form of business and strategy development. Throughout the 6-month Rising Leadership Program, participants consolidate their leadership learnings by working in groups on a Community Project with a Western Australian not-for-profit. The purpose of these Projects is to empower participants to recognise the impact that strong leadership, and resourceful teamwork, can have on organisations within the community. The March cohort developed a sponsorship framework for Awards WA, a comprehensive pilot operating model for Give Write, a strategy review and performance measure development plan was undertaken for Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, and a 5-year strategic plan was created for the Iranian Community of WA.

18 2021 at Leadership WA

The July cohort developed a corporate fundraising strategy for 12 Buckets, a volunteer program for Reconciliation WA, a program model for Live to Tell Your Story Inc., and a thorough program review of a fee for service for United Way WA. In 2021, an estimated 3,276 hours or the equivalent of $982,200* of pro-bono professional support was provided through Skillsbank and the Rising Leadership Program Community Projects. (* based on a professional rate of $300 per hour and calculated based on known committed hours or assessment of typical commitment ).

CASE STUDY – CAHOOTS Cahoots creates inclusive opportunities for children and young people living with disability, to develop friendships, skills and confidence. Earlier this year, Cahoots approached Leadership WA through Skillsbank, seeking a mentor for a new Team Leader. Dr Nicky Howe (Signature 2016), CEO of Southcare responded to the call. “I have been meeting with Pearl since June and have used a coaching approach which invites her to set the agenda for the session. We then work through the topics such as managing self, workplace relationships, working both ‘in’ and ‘on’ the system, managing projects and developing a plan for her career. From a personal perspective, I enjoy intergenerational mentoring as I like to learn from younger leaders, while supporting and helping a younger leader by creating a safe space where she can be honest open and reflective.”

“Nicky has been an excellent mentor for me. We have worked together through several leadership challenges that I have encountered as a new team leader. She has helped me to learn about myself as a leader, my strengths and how to identify the skills that I need my team to be experts in. Nicky applies her experience and knowledge to guide me through the transition from working operationally to working on the systems and processes that will improve practises for the team and whole organisation.”

ALUMNI In 2021, we reached the special milestone of 1000 Alumni community! We are extremely proud of this incredible network of leaders who continue to contribute, advocate, learn and lead their organisations and communities. Over the course of 2021, we welcomed 96 new Signature and Rising Alumni. With a rapidly growing Alumni community, this year Leadership WA embarked on an extensive research project to more clearly understand how Alumni would like to engage with Leadership WA. As we look ahead to 2022, we look forward to actioning the findings of the research to ensure that the Alumni network continues to thrive, and that Leadership WA supports Alumni in their ongoing leadership journeys, facilitating opportunities for Alumni to give back to the WA community.

REFLECTING ON 2021 Throughout 2021, Alumni enjoyed a diverse program of events and experiences, and we are grateful to all the amazing WA leaders, including Alumni, who generously gave their time to share their stories, experiences and leadership learnings. We kicked off the year with an evening of celebration at the 2020 Alumni Awards. CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service WA, Rebecca Tomkinson (Signature 2012), was named our 2020 Distinguished Fellow, recognising her outstanding contribution to the Western Australian community. Sharyn O’Neill, WA Public Sector Commissioner, was awarded as the 2020 Leadership WA Honorary Fellow, acknowledging her enduring support for Leadership WA, commitment to the development of leaders across the public sector and efforts to steer WA through our COVID recovery. Reflecting on your PRINT® during a crisis brought Alumni together to consider and consolidate the experiences and learnings of 2020 in a way that was relevant to their best self, shadow behaviours and triggers. Multiculturalism was explored at the Diverse WA = One WA event in March. Facilitated by Fadzi Whande (Signature 2017), panel members Shameema Kolia, President of the Muslim Women’s Support Centre WA and Co-Founder of Muslim Youth WA, Imam Yahya Adel Ibrahim, Islamic Chaplain, Grace Mugabe (Rising 2016) of Financially Empowered and James Jegasothy of the Office of Multicultural Interests, created a safe space to explore what it means to be a truly inclusive WA. In May, Joel Cohen, Chief of Mission, United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus reflected upon Managing complexity and uncertainty during challenging times and the challenges of leading organisations through ambiguity and hostile environments.

In conversation with Grace Tame, the 2021 Australian of the Year, was an unforgettable evening in June. Grace’s eloquence, passion and compassion reached everyone in the room as she candidly shared her story and her commitment to creating a difference. Accelerating Gender Equity, facilitated by Executive Officer of CEOs for Gender Equity Tania Cecconi (Signature 2019), considered how leaders can create meaningful conversations and effect change. The panel of Gail McGowan, former Director-General of Dept of Planning, Lands and Heritage, Nic Fairbank, CEO of Programmed and Chris Hall, CEO of Juniper, spoke about their experience and commitment to redressing the balance. In August, we held a 2021 Signature Participants: Meet the Alumni sundowner event which saw Alumni and participants sharing their Signature journeys, forged cross cohort connections and introduced the 2021 cohort to the Alumni community. Alumni enjoyed a fascinating Afternoon at the Museum in September, hearing from CEO Alec Coles and taking an exclusive tour of Boola Bardip, WA’s iconic new facility. In November, ‘The Grey Rhino’ Board Masterclass brought together the expertise of Trent Bartlett, Helen Cook, Neil Hackett and Dr Nicky Howe (Signature 2016) to explore the impact of a ‘grey rhino event’ and how leaders can plan for disruption, risk anticipation and mitigation to create sustainable responses, businesses and communities. Alumni brainstorming during the Moving the Dial on Disadvantage Design Lab.

The Moving the Dial on Disadvantage Design Lab, facilitated by Amanda Hunt (Signature 2007)CEO of UnitingCare West, and Kate Chaney, Director of Innovation and Strategy at Anglicare WA, brought together the collective minds of Leadership WA Alumni, partners and WA leaders to help to generate real solutions to improving the lives of WA’s most vulnerable. The group dived into concepts around place-based community connecting activities; family and domestic violence prevention; de-stigmatising asking for help through AI; or even redefining what ‘being in crisis’ means.
