a beginner’s guide

BEAUTY

A facial is a multi-step, multi-purpose skin treatment often including steam, face masks, exfoliation, cleansing, a facial massage and a variety of creams and lotions. There are many types of facial treatments, and choosing the one you need and how often you need it depends on your skin type and skin issues. Some are highly moisturizing, others are firming and restoring, while some focus on problem areas and certain skin conditions. Facials are a great way to keep the exposed skin on our faces vibrant and healthy. Everyone should get at least four facials per year, one at each change of season. However most estheticians suggest getting a professional facial once a month. Regular facials promote cell turnover, boost collagen production and help maintain a healthy skin balance. It also allows a trained esthetician to analyze your skin and determine what your needs are, giving you the ability to choose the appropriate products for your skin type and daily skincare routine. And it’s not just your skin that benefits, facials have been proven to lower stress levels. Facial massage, when done correctly, activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which allows you to rest and relax. In short, not only are facials crucial for healthy skin they are a relaxing, pampering experience in an ever-burgeoning, chaotic world.

WHAT’S YOUR SKIN TYPE? The first step toward getting a beautiful skin is figuring out your skin type. Confused about which category — combination, oily, normal, or dry/ sensitive — you fall into? You’re not alone. Caring for the wrong skin type can aggravate skin, lead to acne, or even make your skin look older than it really is. • Wash your face • Do not apply any product • Wait 2 hours • Check for these signs: Combination - oil in T-zone with areas of dryness Oily - all over tacky or slick feeling and noticeable shine Dry - dehydration or rough patches, flakiness and tightness Normal - smooth feeling with no dry spots or excess shine

Be prepared . . . • Do your research. Make sure you’re choosing a facility that knows what they’re doing. • Know which areas need targeting. Be prepared to tell your esthetician about any areas you would like to pay special attention to. • Discontinue chemical exfoliators. About 3 days before your facial appointment, stop using any products that include chemicals like Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, and Lactic Acid. • Don’t use any products the morning of. Big Pharma

Could there be a better way? Intro by Nikki Lanzer

In the sovereign domain of healthcare, it’s nearly impossible to tell whether greater priority is placed on wallets or wellbeing. The United States’ medical industry often seems to be nothing more than a cash-hungry corporation in disguise. While a free market society supports the growth of business and individual success, its values may have to change when the health and safety of its citizens comes into play. However, not everybody has fallen totally complacent — eager to be spoon-fed which prescriptions and over-thecounter bottles necessities. Instead, many have challenged the almighty power of aptly-named “Big Pharma” by favoring natural markets and holistic alternatives. While fighting the pharmasutical industy’s perceived greed and corruption is certainly one incentive to opt for out-ofmainstream medications, greater safety and effectiveness are two factors that may be even more persuasive. 10 Leader-Telegram Winter 2018 Her impressions

What’s an alternative?

essential oils In a society poised to forego “Big Pharma” for the swelling trend of natural medicine, essential oils have sprouted on the market as plant-based aromas with incredible healing and therapeutic properties. With consumers becoming increasingly mindful of their health, the ingredients in the products they use, and the sources of those ingredients, essential oils fit the bill as far more than just pleasantly-scented serums. From headaches and acne, to depression and IBS, each particular strain possesses unique characteristics that allow it to remedy countless ailments and improve overall wellbeing. But what exactly are these seemingly “magic elixirs” that promise to bring health and happiness through something as fundamental as the sense of smell? Beyond what any fancy perfumes could offer, essential oils are actually natural compounds derived from specific varieties of seeds, flowers, bark and other components of flora.

Lemon: brightens mood; enhances energy; fights acne and cold sores; cleanser/antiseptic Try diluting a few drops of lemon EO in a spray bottle for a natural kitchen disinfectant Peppermint: promotes mental alertness; aids in nausea and indigestion Add a couple drops to hot water to make a great tea for soothing symptoms of IBS Lavender: relieves stress and anxiety; relaxes mind and body; induces sleep Place a two or three drops on a pillow for a restful night’s slumber

Special distillation methods allow these oils to be extracted and used as concentrated fragrances with compositions and properties that promote various benefits. Although many people choose to diffuse their oils into the air, many pure and fully-organic varieties can be used topically or internally to receive the most effective results. For more information on essential oils consider attending one of the many informative meetings/consultations in your area.

CBD oil

The medicinal power of plants is nothing new to mankind — a species reliant on the healing properties of vegetation thousands of years before bottled ibuprofen and Prozac hit the market and were exchanged across pharmacy counters. As the reputation of the mainstream drug industry continues to drop — due to factors such as biased research, falsified claims, and profit-driven motives — people seem to be gravitating more towards the tried and true medications of their ancestors. In recent years, cannabidiol (CBD) has stepped into conventional pharmaceutical territory as one of these plant-based drugs and is increasingly growing in scope and popularity. Derived from the cannabis plant, this sought-after compound is the nonpsychoactive counterpart to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike its mind-altering cousin, CBD does not give patients any sort of “high” sensation. On the contrary, the hemp-stemmed chemical can be used to support the human regulatory system by essentially rejuvenating the body-produced cannabinoids, which help to monitor and balance mood, memory, appetite, and immune system functions. While long-term research on CBD and its benefits is still in its early stages, countless investigations have shown the compound to be extremely effective in lowering anxiety, relieving pain, reducing blood sugar levels, curbing nicotine cravings, and alleviating arthritis. Several studies have even discovered properties of the drug that prevent seizures and treat epilepsy. In terms of usage and consumption, medicinal CBD is typically extracted in oil form and administered through a variety of ways, such as by capsule, spray, or tincture dropper.

While CBD is not currently FDA-approved, the cultivation and marketing of products derived from industrial hemp (nonpsychoactive cannabis) is legal in the United States. Local Eau Claire radio host, Tess Morgan loses iHeart Radio’s Tess Morgan is the first person to tell you she needed a wake-up call. At 246 pounds, she knew that to get her life back, she needed to lose the weight that had been steadily creeping up on her over the last 10 years. At her tipping point she says, “I was shocked at my size, and it just snuck up on me. I couldn’t believe how big I had gotten, and I thought, this is it, I have got to do something about this.” Morgan tried multiple weight-loss programs over the years, but none worked for her. Eventually, she found the Medifast Weight Control Center in Eau Claire, and she wasn’t overly confident when she first walked through the door. “I was nervous about whether there were things that would keep me from losing the weight, like my age. There were many things I was worried about! But the consultants and staff at the Medifast Center were absolutely brilliant at helping me work through all the speed bumps,” she said. After her initial consultation, Morgan immediately began her Medifast program, and she started seeing results quickly, losing 7.4 pounds in her first week and 31.7 pounds in her

first eight weeks! She continued her one-on-one weekly meetings at Medifast, where the team of registered dietitians and nutritionists made adjustments to the plan in order to best fit her goals and needs. After following the program for 27 weeks, Morgan lost 96 pounds!* These days Morgan doesn’t hold back from the life she’s always wanted. At 96 pounds lighter, she can do everything she daydreamed about, such as kayaking and playing volleyball. When she shares her Medifast story, she says, “It might seem scary to change your life, but it’s so worth it to take that chance and to put yourself out there because the life that you’ll eventually lead is far more exciting and enriching than you ever thought possible.” Morgan is currently in the maintenance phase of the Medifast program, where she continues meeting with with her team of consultants working to maintain healthy habits so that she can keep the weight off for life.

Prescription Opiods

What’s an alternative?

massage therapy Addiction to opiates is a growing problem in the United States and Canada. Pain relief therapies, such as massage therapy, can be viable alternatives to the prescription pain medicines that often serve as a gateway to illegal drugs such as heroin. Addiction to prescription painkillers is common. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 4.7 million people in the United States are dependent on painkillers, the sale of which has increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. When prescriptions to oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl run out, many people turn to heroin as a less expensive and more readily available means of pain relief. NIDA says that up to 7 percent of people who are prescribed opiate or analgesic pain killers will become addicted. To help reduce the overprescribing epidemic and keep people from becoming addicted to pain meds, people can look for other ways to alleviate pain. Massage therapy is a viable option that can work wonders to improve flexibility and offer relief from pain in different parts of the body. In addition to alleviating pain, massage therapy

produce energy and help muscles recover from activity.

Research indicates that massage therapy can reduce the incidence and frequency of back pain, headache and leg pain and can even reduce stress and tension. Massage therapy can be an asset to those with myalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions.

A review published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice noted that moderate pressure massage can lead to decreased cortisol levels, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Massage may help stimulate serotonin products, improving mood and feelings of well-being. Also, according to AMTA, deeper massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues while helping the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It also eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility.

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that massage therapy affects the activity of certain genes, which directly reduces inflammation in muscles — the same results that would occur if a person took pain medication. Researchers tested people who exercised and received massages afterward against a control group, discovering that massage dampened the activity of proteins known as inflammatory cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increased levels of proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that

A monotonous tick of the second hand slices through the sterile silence suffocating the waiting room. Only the muffled page-flipping of ancient health magazines can be heard as Jen taps her foot, impatiently waiting for her name to be called by the nurse. After taking the afternoon off from work, commuting 25 miles to the nearest clinic, and arranging for a sitter to pick up her youngest after school, the mom of two has already invested excessive sums of time, money, and hassle into a seemingly simple doctor visit for her seasonal flu. For a society that prioritizes convenience and affordability, it’s no wonder that a better solution already exists for regular people like Jen. In an advanced and continuallymodernizing world where smart phones dominate and habitation on Mars appears to be a not-too-distant possibility, “virtual care” has surfaced as the technological accommodation to both cost and ease. Known also as “telemedicine” or “telehealth,” virtual care is used to describe the new virtual methods of communication and consultation between medical practitioners and their patients. Through video calls and online chat By Nikki Lanzer platforms, clients can now receive care from the comfort of their living room sofas.

“There is a trade-off” - Chris Meyer

Although virtual care has become a quicker, more convenient option for people all across the United States, it has been especially beneficial to those who reside in rural areas and have greater difficulty finding access to quality medical care. Connections to specialists can be made in minutes rather than a never-ending hopscotch of referrals and delays. Throughout virtual care’s ascent to popularity over the past decade, numerous national providers have emerged at its forefront — pioneers to the virtual medicine game committed to expanding its capabilities to full potential. MD Live, Doctor on Demand, and Teladoc are a few of the most popular, but there are also providers that operate regionally, such as Care My Way — a service offered through the Marshfield Clinic Health System. But what exactly makes one virtual care provider favorable to another? Are there benefits to choosing a local service like Care My Way over a reputable national brand? And are any significant differences present between the larger, established names to warrant one the better choice? Apart from minor differences, when it comes to national virtual care, most providers are fairly comparable. Regardless of which one an individual chooses, he or she will be able to afford it without insurance.

Regional telehealth, on the other hand, can offer the added benefit of potential face-to-face consultation since the practitioners come from a select, local pool of nurse practitioners. With Care My Way, for example, Marshfield’s Director of Telehealth and Virtual Care Chris Meyer explained that the nurse practitioners are chosen from a directory of Marshfield Clinic nurse practitioners, which may ultimately support virtual interactions with the promise and security of a tangible locale to touch base. In addition, CMW gives practitioners full access to their patients’ medical records — a way to better ensure care continuity across an individual’s consultations. Since its inception in 2013, the Care My Way model has transformed immensely, converting from a provider that solely utilized telephone services to one that now thrives on its modes of virtual consultation. According to Marshfield Clinic’s Director of Care Management and Value Based Care Becky Birchmeier, Care My Way has consequently become an extremely helpful tool for patients in both lowering cost and augmenting convenience. At only 40 dollars per consultation, patients can receive diagnoses and treatment without straining their checkbook or Tetris-like schedule. Even though CMW services are primarily only intended to

address minor or non-emergency issues — such as the flu, strep throat, and sinus infections — they significantly decrease the hours factored into an in-person consultation. While Care My Way and other telemedicine providers have proven to be the solution for those who value time and savings, Meyer points out that some restrictions still exist. “There is a trade-off,” Meyer said, “because what can and can’t be diagnosed is limited.”

Although virtual care was never intended to fully replace in-person doctor visits, the growing medical trend has given patients nationwide access to quick, easy healthcare and will continue to expand in quality and application to promote wellbeing. In fact, when it comes to our area, all can feel secure in a solid presence of virtual care — a service provided by a healthcare system that has offered decades of unwavering commitment. “Marshfield has been a leader in the use of telehealth to deliver highquality healthcare to our patients throughout our service area since 1997,” Meyer said. “We are excited to offer another way to connect patients with their provider in a convenient, cost-conscious way.” For more information about the services offered by Care My Way, please visit http://www.marshfieldclinic.org/care-my-way or download the CMW application available on most smart phones.

Using ovulation kits to predict fertility Article provided by Mayo Clinic.

Search for ovulation kit or ovulation app online, and you’ll quickly see that finding the right tool can be a little overwhelming. Here’s some advice from Alicia Ogle, nurse practitioner in OBGYN in Eau Claire, about how to pick the best one for you and use it successfully. Why use an ovulation kit? Ovulation kits look for a rise in the luteinizing hormone, which causes women to ovulate and release an egg. When a woman is ovulating, she is at the most fertile part of her cycle and is the most likely to get pregnant. Being aware of this can help increase a woman’s chances of getting pregnant.

Once released, the egg has 12 to 24 hours to become fertilized. On average, sperm can survive inside a woman’s body for three days and can fertilize the egg a of couple days after intercourse. How do I read the ovulation kits? •

Can I use an app, or should I use a kit? Each woman has different needs when it comes to predicting ovulation. All women should track their cycles, and a great place to do that is with an app. After periods are entered, the app will give the fertile time of the cycle. Some women who wish to get pregnant in the relatively near future might use an app that tracks their menstrual cycle. Having intercourse at least every other day around their most fertile time is recommended. If a couple has been trying for at least year and has not been able to conceive or want to conceive as soon as possible, then they should use an ovulation kit in addition to the app.

The stick ovulation tests are similar to pregnancy tests. They show lines, and one of the lines is a control line. If the second line is as dark or darker than the first line, that indicates you will soon ovulate. These tests can be more difficult to read, but they are the least expensive. Some digital ovulation tests tell you yes or no on the window. It may use words or images, such as smiley faces, to tell you that you will soon be ovulating. Other digital tests may tell you how fertile you are. They essentially give you your fertile days, as an app may indicate, but you would still be looking for the peak to be considered a positive result, indicating that you will soon be ovulating.

When should I use the ovulation kit?

Not getting the results you are looking for?

Typically, a woman’s menstrual cycle is 28 days. With a 28-day cycle, you typically will ovulate on day 14 or 14 days before your next period starts. If you have a shorter or longer cycle, that day varies. Start testing on the first day that is indicated a fertile day on your app, and test your urine once daily. If you get a positive kit, then have intercourse that day and the day after.

Ovulation kits aren’t perfect. False positives or consistent negatives can happen. This may be caused by eggs not being released, excessive amounts of the luteinizing hormone or another ovulatory dysfunction. If you are concerned about your results, contact your provider to discuss your fertility. 848021 02-04-18

Homeownership Expenses

Despite the volatility experienced by many homeowners as a result of the 2008 housing market crash, homeownership continues to be considered by many an essential component of the American Dream. As stated by Prosperity Now, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization dedicated to economic mobility for all, “homeownership has long been the primary way for families to build wealth in the United States. Owning an affordable home can offer working families stability, security and a legacy to pass on to the next generation.” (retrieved from https:// prosperitynow.org/topics/housing-homeownership) 847837 2-4-18

In Eau Claire, nearly 60% of all households are homeowners (U.S. Census, 2015). While homeownership offers security and stability, financial complications such as low-credit score or lack of adequate savings to secure a down-payment can be a barrier for many community members who wish to purchase a home of their own. FamilyMeans, a local non-profit organization, can provide valuable one-on-one assistance in understanding personal finances. Cathy Majkowski, FamilyMeans Financial Solutions certified credit professional in the Eau Claire office, helps homeowners and hopefulhomeowners with budgeting, credit questions and debt repayment needs. Cathy states “FamilyMeans has been helping homeowners in the greater Chippewa Valley set up spending plans and savings plans for over 20 years. An important part of owning a home that is often forgotten involves planning for maintenance and repair. The roof, furnace, and appliances aren’t going to last forever and it’s important to plan-for the inevitable replacement of these items over time. We can help you get a handle on your current expenses while planning for the long-term, future needs, too. “ Cathy went on to say, “We can help the hopeful-owner, too! Mortgage lenders refer prospective buyers frequently, to get them ready for homeownership. Some just need help preparing for mortgage payments, taxes and insurance, while others need to pay-down unsecured debt and improve their credit before applying for a loan. We can review the situation, work on budgeting and saving, or calculate a Debt Management Program to reduce credit card, medical and collection debt quickly. Our Budget and Debt Counseling appointment lays out various options to stabilize and improve an individual’s financial situation. And – the initial appointment is free! Thanks, in part, to the support of United Way!”

Her PETS

Exploring Holistic Veterinary Care Just as many people have turned to alternative treatments to manage their health and remedy illnesses, so, too, are pet owners seeking other methods of care for their furry companions. Holistic and natural applications are now sought-after choices for veterinary care.

Both traditional and alternative medicine can be helpful in promoting pet health. In fact, many veterinarians—such as Eau Claire’s Dr. Linda Vognar—are now embracing an integrative approach to animal patient wellness and are even trained in various holistic applications. “The care I offer to clients’ pets is in addition to—not instead of—the care offered by their regular family veterinarian,” Vognar said. “Holistic and traditional Western care for pets are not binary, and there are numerous modalities of care under both overarching categories.” While the two approaches are actually complementary rather than exclusive, there still exist some key differences. Western medicine is built on the concept of identifying the disease and treating it directly until the patient gets better. Various approaches include pharmaceutical and surgical care. On the other hand, alternative medicine is largely geared around boosting the body’s natural ability to heal itself through diet and different rehabilitation methods, according to WebDVM. At Four Paws, Four Treasures, LLC, Dr. Vognar specializes specifically in

22 Leader-Telegram Winter 2018 Her impressions

traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, which comprises of five unique categories. “Herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, exercise, and Tuina (a form of energy massage) are all utilized to correct systemic imbalances that result in ‘disease states,’” Vognar explained. “I use those to augment Western therapies which have not been totally effective or have had negative side effects for my client’s pets.” Pet owners can discuss the various alternative treatments, which may work in conjunction with Western medicine, with their pets’ veterinarians. Many vets are now trained to offer advice in such areas as herbal supplementation, food therapy and physical rehabilitation. Holistic treatments also may complement religious beliefs or medical philosophies. Holistic therapies often can be customized to meet a person’s beliefs as well as budget in regard to pet care. Another advantage to alternative approaches is greater geographical range. While many traditional treatments are geared around physical examinations and lab work before making a diagnosis or prescribing pharmaceuticals, alternative medical counseling may be achieved over the phone or via email correspondence. Therapies can be suggested to benefit the pet. According to the pet resource magazine Dogs Naturally, holistic therapy can be beneficial to pets that have been diagnosed with cancer. Half of adult dogs today will get cancer, and many of the deaths to dogs over the age of 10 are cancer-related. Rather than bombard sick pets with tests and harsh treatments that can further weaken their already compromised bodies, holistic approaches focus

on strengthening foods and tools that revive the pet’s body and weaken the power of the cancer. This can extend and also improve the pet’s quality of life. Pet owners who are interested in exploring alternative approaches to pet healthcare can research homeopathic and alternative veterinary practitioners in their areas. Some online consultations may lead to referrals to someone closer to home. For those interested in speaking with Dr. Vognar or scheduling an appointment at Four Paws, Five Treasures, LLC, please contact 715-835-0012 or 4paws5treasures@gmail. com.
