FROM THE PRESIDENT l Michael Mueller

I wish everyone a successful 2019 I

think everyone can agree that 2018 had its ups and downs. I feel that the industry was up but the rain kept us down. With more rainfall than this state has ever had in history, it was tough staying on schedule, but there is always a positive side to everything. This year has been extremely productive for the board of directors of the Kentucky Nursery Landscape Association (KNLA). Our summer show this year was held at City Place in LaGrange, KY. We had some amazing vendors, great educators and an energetic attendance. Everyone in attendance agreed the industry is doing well and fun was had by all. The winter show will be held at the newly renovated Holiday Inn East on Hurstbourne Lane in Louisville, Kentucky. I cannot brag on the current board of the KNLA enough for coordinating this trade show. I think everyone that attends will be wowed with what is going to be taught and the general comradery that will be going on during this year’s show. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that is a KNLA member for your support and dedication to our state organization. Without your continued support we could not keep our members informed about what is going on in our industry. It is up to us to have a “voice” for who we are and what we stand for.

Welcome, New KNLA Members! Wes James Full Care, Inc.

Charles E. Wilson

Memorial Scholarship By Michael Mueller, KNLA President

The

2019 recipient of the Charles E. Wilson memorial scholarship goes to Sumi McCarty of Georgetown, KY. She is currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky studying horticulture enterprise management. Sumi is no stranger to our industry and has attended some of our KNLA tradeshows in the past. She grew up working with her father at his nursery and landscape company in Georgetown, KY. Her hope is to run her father’s business after graduating college. She hopes to grow the retail side of the business once she joins the company. Sumi has volunteered with many organizations including St. John’s Church and Habitat for Humanity. It is our pleasure that she accepts this scholarship that is in my father-in-law, Charles E. Wilson’s name. Charlie founded Wilson Nurseries in 1979 and grew it to one of the largest nurseries in the state. Through his career he was president of the KNLA and the Kentucky Horticulture Council. He was passionate about teaching and giving back to the community. 2

Local

Y

ou always hear, especially during the holiday season, “Buy Local”. There is even a Small Business Saturday to encourage buyers to purchase from their local, family-owned storefronts versus the big box stores that have the colorful ads and television commercials. These big box stores are usually cheaper and sometimes even carry the exact same items as the smaller local places. We gladly and willingly buy the exact same product, for more money from the family-owned, local store because we want to support our community. We’d love for this to continue to trickle its way down to the nursery industry! By golly, we have come a long way and I think we have a lot of people to thank for that, but there is always room for improvement, right? This, I believe, has more to do with the bid process than the buyers themselves, because we all

have to eat. Thank you so much to the landscape contractors, landscape architects, garden centers, re-wholesale centers, municipalities, privately funded groups, plant brokers, and more that are doing their best to buy local first! We see you and appreciate your patronage and friendship more than you know. I’ve started to hear it a lot more during this past year and want to again say, Thank You. I see this from the perspective of the wholesale B & B growers because that is where my experience has been and we see material brought in all the time, from outside of our state, to be planted just miles away from our own nurseries. So, with that said, I want to take a few minutes to introduce you to some of our B & B growers that are KNLA members here in Kentucky!

Abrams Nursery Crestwood, Kentucky (502) 241-4996

Abrams Nursery started in 2001 with a love for nature and a desire to provide customers with quality plants. Starting with less than 10 acres, the nursery has grown to be one of the largest in Kentucky with over 300 acres in quality field and container production. The sales yard, located in picturesque Crestwood, KY, consists of over 8 acres of “pickup ready” field and container nursery stock.

Laurel Nursery Corbin, Kentucky (606) 528-3191

Laurel Nursery, owned and managed by Randy Sizemore, is located in Corbin, KY and has been in business for 41 years. Laurel Nursery is a wholesale-only grower that runs on a dig-toorder basis and has acres full of trees ready to be dug and delivered. The nursery has about 150 acres in production and operates with a small staff that continue to provide excellent quality trees and good customer service. Laurel Nursery grows many different varieties of conifers and deciduous trees such as arborvitae, hemlocks, magnolias, shade trees, flowering ornamentals, and some shrubs. The hemlocks, as shown in the photo, are plentiful and are in the 9' – 10' tall range… beautiful plants! If you haven’t heard of Laurel Nursery, please give them a chance and drive over to Corbin to see what they’re about! Tell them the KNLA sent you.

Mike Brown’s Wholesale Nursery Hustonville, Kentucky (606) 346-0863

Mike Brown’s Wholesale Nursery has been in existence since 1991. Mike Brown and Marsha, his wife of 44 years, have been growing since 1984 for their own landscaping use, before opening for wholesale business in ‘91. Their best selling items are boxwoods and as you can see by this picture, they are meticulously maintained and pruned to perfection! Mike Brown’s Wholesale Nursery is located in Hustonville, KY in Lincoln County just south of Danville and is roughly 200 acres and a lovely place to visit. Mike and Marsha’s son, Aaron, has been working at the farm since he was about 12 years old and is now the field manager. Aaron was getting a hands-on education about plants way before most of us knew the difference between an oak and a maple. Due to demand and need for additional planting space, they just purchased an additional 40 acres in Casey County. At the Hustonville location, you will find many, many varieties of boxwoods, taxus, arborvitae, holly, flowering shrubs, and hydrangeas. Mike Brown himself mentioned that they have 15 different varieties of just Oak Leaf Hydrangea! Please take some time to visit Mike and Marsha at their beautiful farm, you won’t be disappointed!

Riverfarm

Oldham County, Kentucky (502) 228-5408 Riverfarm Nursery is a 300-acre tree farm filled to the brim with a wide selection of shade trees and ornamentals. It is nestled along the rolling hills of Oldham County, Kentucky, overlooking the Ohio River about 20 miles northeast of Louisville. Managed by Patrick Carey, the farm is known for its high quality balled and burlap trees and excellent customer service. Riverfarm’s wide range of products ensure that customers are able to procure their entire plant list from one location. Whether you are interested in a 4.5" Red Maple or a 2" Ivory Silk Lilac, they are helpful in providing good stock and sometimes even better ideas for choosing the right plant for the right spot! As we all know, inventory is a challenge for growers all over Kentucky and the nation right now and there are shortages of larger plant material. While inventory is tight at Riverfarm in the larger 3" caliper and above range, there are still some options out there if the customer can be flexible with varieties. Sometimes that can be difficult, but more times than not, a tree can be subbed out for something with a similar growth habit and/or coloring. Riverfarm tries to keep up with the most current trends of new material being offered by the liner companies out there and they only buy from the most reputable in the industry. They have found that a good liner, while usually more expensive, saves both time and money in the one to three year process of creating a ready-tosell specimen. Riverfarm is known for having many different cultivars of all of their trees, but the majority of their variety comes from both Redbuds and Dogwoods. Patrick is a real lover of plants and sometimes can’t say no when shown some of the beautiful new trees that they have to offer. Don’t hesitate to give Riverfarm a call to request a tour, they are always willing and eager to show new and existing customers around.

Snow Hill Nursery Shelbyville, Kentucky (502) 633-2019

Snow Hill Nursery, founded in 1970, is managed by the father/ son duo Melvin and Mason Moffett. Snow Hill is located in the heart of Shelbyville, Kentucky and can be seen by passersby as they wonder just how big that nursery really is! This 350-acre farm is made up of conifers, shade trees, and shrubs of many different varieties. Whether it is a Maple or an Arborvitae, Snow Hill is prepared for whatever it is that you need. Snow Hill focuses on trees in the 1.5" caliper all the way to the large 4.5" caliper so you can either get something pretty easy to plant or instant gratification! Either way, you’ll be pleased with the result! Serving many projects in the Louisville area, Snow Hill has provided material for many if not most of the projects that you see around. Their trees arrive balled, burlapped and with the utmost quality and care put into each plant that you purchase. If you have not yet visited Snow Hill Nursery, drive on over to Shelbyville and give Melvin and Mason a visit!

Stockdale Tree Farm, LLC Murray, Kentucky (270) 293-1003

Stockdale Tree Farm, LLC is a family-owned production nursery in western Kentucky near Murray and was organized in 2004. The daily operation is managed by Jamie and Johnnie Stockdale. The nursery consists of 80 acres of field production and approximately 5,000 containers produced annually. The majority of plant material grown is deciduous trees. Concentration is with proven cultivars, with some newer additions such as Wildfire Blackgum. The 2" and 2.5" are the target sizes with the field operation. Production methods such as drip tape, wide row spacing and attention to details ensure a top quality product. The container operation is using the “Plantright Planter Bag” on all of the #10, #15 and #20 plants. The system began 3 years ago, and the superiority of plants produced in the bags was seen immediately. The woven fabric bag acts much like an “airpruned” pot, in that the root system is much more fibrous and denser than a similar plastic pot. There is also much less root circling. The other major advantage of Plantright bags is their ability to stand in the production nursery and the retail nursery. Each size bag is larger than the corresponding plastic pot size, because they have straight sides and contain approximately 20% more media. Blow over has been reduced approximately 90%.

There is also an advantage at shipping, since there are no hard sided pots to damage trunks. The advantage of the Plantright bags are tremendous. If high quality BNB or container trees are in your future, please consider Stockdale Tree Farm.

Valley Hill Nurseries Springfield, Kentucky (859) 284-5141

Valley Hill Nurseries has been providing quality shade and flowering trees to wholesalers since 1972. A lot of things have changed since we opened our doors back then. We’ve gone from keeping books of records and writing out receipts on 5 carbon paper to doing everything online. But, through all the changes the business has made, the trees have remained a welcome constant. We still grow some of the same tried and true varieties that we did back in 1972: October Glory, Red Sunset Maple, Redbud, Skyline Locust, and Red Oak; to name a few. Although we have come a long way and now have some of the more boutique style ornamental trees that every-

one is needing for understory such as Ivory Silk, Constellation and Stellar Pink Dogwoods, Ace of Hearts Redbud, and The Rising Sun Redbud! We still grow our trees with many of the same techniques we did in the beginning. We transplant into the fields basically the same as we did back then; and hand trimming with Felco #2 is still the best way to get the branch structure we need. Our trees range in size from 1.75" – 5", and are guaranteed to provide beauty and shade for years to come. We at Valley Hill Nurseries take pride in those long-standing traditions. Stop by and see for yourself why sometimes the “old way” is still the best way. 2

Local Brokers are at Your Service I also want to introduce to you some of our local plant brokers for when you have a big project and don’t have the energy or the time to track it all down yourself, sometimes going to multiple places, they are definitely there to help! They have contacts inside and outside of KY, when needed, to find your plant material

and have it ready in time for your job! Ask for Kentuckygrown material first and they are more than happy to do the work to find it. Material is hard to find these days, especially in larger quantities, so this could definitely be an option for you! 2

Feature Story

The Online Plant Buying Boom Has Begun... Are You Ready? By Tammy Carey, KNLA Executive Director

Nurs ery Views • Winter 2018

We

can now use FaceTime to see the person that we are talking to, and thanks to satellites and other technology, we know what Mars looks like in real time. And now, we can also buy plants off of the internet?! Who would have thought that one could by a Knockout Rose Bush online and have it delivered to their front door? Apparently if you have $37.99 and Amazon Prime, it will arrive to your address in just under a week. Of course those of us in the nursery industry would NEVER pay that cost for a #3 container plant of any type or variety, but this is real in the retail market and is now available online to YOUR retail customers everywhere! We all know that times are changing and department storefronts are closing left and right due to people preferring to order online. Sometimes the deals are even better online than in the stores because even the storefront would rather you shop on their online site. The younger generation already prefers online shopping and isn’t worried about buying a product sight unseen. We need to be ready for them! So, how do we compete with this and stay relevant in today’s changing market? You might think that this is something to be concerned with for only garden centers, but plant brokers, growers, re-wholesale centers, and even landscapers will be feeling the brunt if we aren’t already. What’s the expression, Ride or Die? I’m going to use Wes King’s new GREEN take on that adage and say that as an industry, we need to GROW or Die! So, how do we do this? Many of these online sales companies don’t grow or house their own products and so they are looking for growers, garden centers, and re-wholesale centers to supply what they are in turn selling to THEIR new customers. So, it doesn’t hurt to jump on the bandwagon and reach out to some of these companies and provide them with your availability and pricing so that you can be included as a potential vendor. The process is very much like having a broker of your material. Most times a commission and/or discount is required on the vendor’s end in order for the

14

online sales company to make a profit, but many of us are used to this process in some of our other relationships. Another way of looking at this is by sheer product branding, customer service, and reputation. Everyone knows exactly what they are getting when they either pick out their perennials at King’s Garden Center, tag their trees in the field at Snow Hill Nursery, or pick out their boxwoods and two shade trees at Site One Landscaping. In this scenario, you can ask questions to the professionals, build relationships with people, and actually SEE your product before you buy it! We, of course, prefer this mode of purchasing better too because there is so much to see other than the few things that the customer originally came for... kind of like the Dollar Spot at Target, but not. Times are indeed changing, and boy are they changing fast. See what you can do to keep up with the times and stay in the game. For all you landscapers out there, just wait, I bet there is going to be an online market for your services coming soon. All of these plants that are being shipped need to be planted by someone, right? Is it going to be the generation that spends 5 hours per day checking social media and playing on their phones? I think not. There is a business idea in there somewhere! 2

We are in the process of gathering materials and putting together a team to work on updating and improving our product. Thank you for your patience and we assure you that the new KCN exam and study guide will be better for it!

Join the fun and Be An Exhibitor!

The Holiday Inn, Louisville East is beautiful, and over the last two years has been entirely renovated. We are hoping it will be comfortable for all of our guests that either choose to stay overnight or just stay during the day to enjoy the show. The exhibitor space is very large and can accommodate what we need and allow us to grow. The meeting rooms are large enough for us, and there are many common areas where our attendees can pair off to meet with clients, etc. Don’t worry, we are still expecting a wonderful lunch both days, we know that is expected and we won’t disappoint!!! We are looking forward to a packed house, so don’t wait until the last minute – Sign up today!

In the past, the exhibitors have enjoyed the event, but the accommodations were not up to par. We heard you! We are also trying new things to get the attendees more engaged with the exhibitors. We’ve all been to a trade show where the attendees get in a line and go around to each booth to get a signature, right? That’s terrible for all involved. We’re going to mix it up a bit and determine from YOU, our exhibitors, what you’d like people to know and come up with information that needs to be obtained to fill out their sheets. We hope that this will be a fun event for all involved and get more interaction from everyone. You can log on to KNLA.org to get signed up for your booth! W

hat a beautiful day we had at CityPlace in LaGrange! Thank you to all that came out to enjoy a great day of training, good food, and of course thank you to our many sponsors who made this event happen! We had a lot of feedback from the event and most of it was very positive… except the fact that it was a little cold in the meeting room… I think we forgot to turn the AC back down after getting hot from setting up! So sorry, I wish I knew that people were cold! Some folks loved the venue so well that they suggested doing it there again. We’ll revisit that one after our Winter Education show, but we are thinking about getting back outside to a green space and back to our roots for next time! I want to take this time to thank the presenters that took the time out of their day to come share with us what they do best! Those fine folks who presented were: Tom Smarr, Nicole Ward Gauthier, Sgt. Jason Morris, Travis Legleiter, Tim Bennett, and Josh Miller. I also want to take the time to thank our exhibitors that came to give us all something new to check out during the education breaks! Thank you to: Listerman & Associates, Klyn Nurseries, Riverfarm Nursery, Woody Warehouse, CMCKY, Village Green Wholesale, Nature Wholesale Nursery, Scarff’s Nursery, Inc, Kelly Nursery, ML Irrigation/Highland Moor, Snow Hill Nursery, Richey Nursery Company, Housewarmings Outdoors, and Site One Landscape Supply! 2
