Family Farm Innovation at Highlandbrook Nursery

Highlandbrook Nursery is located in Elkton, nestled between the cities of Russellville and Hopkinsville. Owned and operated by Ashley Short, Highlandbrook offers a full range of products and services.

Ashley and Highlandbrook provide many different varieties of plants from containerized shrubs and perennials, field grown trees and shrubs, and everything in between.

Ashley was raised on the family farm that is now Highlandbrook. He always knew that was where he wanted to live, but Ashley was lured away to the big city of Nashville where he began doing landscaping in 1993. He found that he had a love for plants and wanted to do more than just plant them for others. Over time he truly wanted to get home to help out with the farm and his aging parents. They made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse in the form of a plot of land where he was able to build the foundation of Highlandbrook Nursery and begin growing his own containerized plants. He quickly decided that this was where his business would continue to grow, and in 2000 Ashley decided that he wanted to break into the rapidly growing B & B market.

He continued to provide landscaping services to his clients and began to provide his own material! This wasn’t just a great business plan, but it gave Ashley the ability to grow the types of plants that he had the most interest in. He has always been attracted to natives and native cultivars.

Because of this love of plants, he constantly has his eye out for interesting ideas and varieties that are new to him and others. One of his favorites, Juniperus virginiana ‘Green Point’, was introduced by Mike Hayman, a Louisville local and fellow respected plantsman. Mike Hayman turned him on to this plant at a local trade show and now this is one of his best sellers. He uses it not only on his landscape jobs but sells it to his many customers in the region.

Ashley is joined by his wife Carol, who makes sure everything runs smoothly in the office. They make the perfect team!
