MTA OFFICERS

T

here’s one thing that I look forward to every year, and that’s the arrival of fall. The grass is slowing down, football gets kicked off, and those cool crisp mornings just seem to give you an added boost of energy. Before you know it, the holidays will sneak up on us as fast as you can snap your fingers. I would like to take the time to give a huge thank you to the MSU Turf Team for putting on an amazing Turfgrass Field Day in August. We had an excellent turnout with over 250 attendees and more than 30 sponsors/vendors. It was a great chance for everyone to interact and see the cutting edge research that the turf team has worked so diligently to put together. Don’t forget to sign up for the Deep South Turf Expo in Biloxi held November 26–29. We have an amazing line up of vendors, speakers, and turf professionals for this year, with the addition of a championship golf tournament for all you expert golfers. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Last but not least, make sure you put the 2019 MTA Turfgrass Roadshow on your calendar as well. It will be held January 3rd at the EMCC/Lion Hills Center in Columbus, MS. We’ve got a great group of speakers, and the Lion Hills folks do an amazing lunch. I look forward to seeing everyone in the near future. If you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of our MTA board members.

Fraze Mowing

Cover Story

and Timing of Overseeding Establishment By Matt Carpenter and Barry Stewart, Ph.D.

S

uccessful fall overseeding can be an important task to many turfgrass groundskeepers. Different sports fields need green coverage at different times. Winter overseeding is the process of seeding cool season grass seeds into an established warm season grass before dormancy. This is typically performed for an aesthetically pleasing turfgrass from October to May (Kopec and Umeda, 2015). The most common cool season grass used for overseeding in the southeast is perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) within mainly hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis). Time of overseeding affects success. For example, in central Mississippi, if the field is not needed for play until March, overseeding dates as late as November may provide acceptable stand density. However, if the field needs to be green and playable during the fall and early winter, overseeding needs to occur sooner. Various methods are used to prepare the turfgrass stand for perennial ryegrass establishment and to minimize competition with the bermudagrass for sunlight and nutrients. They include, but are not limited to, scalping, vertical mowing, and aerification. Scalping is

14 • Mississippi Turfgrass • Fall 2018

most commonly used by groundskeepers, because it does not require any special machinery. Through aeration, the soil is broken up, allowing better oxygen flow through the soil, which leads to decomposition of organic matter and thatch (Murray and Juska, 1977) and helps to increase seed to soil contact of overseeded ryegrass. Vertical mowing is the process of vertically rotating a series of blades through the turf canopy, which removes a portion of accumulated thatch and likewise improves seed integration into the soil. Although not truly a new method, fraze mowing (pronounced “phrase”), is becoming more popular amongst warm-season turfgrass managers. Fraze mowing is the removal of aboveground biomass, sometimes at a fraction of an inch deep, other times as deep as 2 inches. This is accomplished using a specialized machine consisting of a rotary spindle with special tines or blades (Kurcab, 2016). Fraze mowing removes thatch, weeds, and organic matter and prepares the soil for overseeding establishment. Experiments were conducted at the Mississippi State University R.R. Foil Plant Science Research Center. Treatments and overseeding occurred on

September 22, October 13, and October 31. Establishment treatments included fraze mowing at ¼ and ¾ inch depths, scalping at 1 inch with a rotary mower, and vertical mowing at 1 inch depth. Following establishment treatments, perennial ryegrass was overseeded at a rate of 10 lbs/1000 ft2. Experiments were irrigated and fertilized to promote rapid germination and active perennial ryegrass growth. Perennial ryegrass cover was assessed weekly for three weeks following seeding and then twice monthly. Fraze mowing and scalping were useful cultivation methods for rapid perennial ryegrass overseeding establishment and had the highest turf quality rating, compared to other treatments, one month after treatment. Peak fall green cover occurred 9 weeks after seeding for the September 22 overseeding and only 5 weeks after seeding for the October 13 overseeding, due to less hybrid bermudagrass growth competition for the perennial ryegrass and optimum temperatures. The October 31 overseeding did not reach peak cover until 15 weeks after seeding, in the middle of February due to the onset of suboptimal temperatures for active perennial ryegrass growth. However,

by mid-March all treatments were visually similar. Though the fraze mowing was useful, the field would be undesirable visually and unplayable for the first few weeks as the young perennial ryegrass

established. Overseeding into an established bermudagrass canopy without fraze mowing or scalping allows for bermudagrass competition which can negatively influence establishment; however, it does not interrupt play as severely.

If color for fall play is a goal, early overseeding with fraze mowing would be beneficial. In Starkville, based upon this limited data, early to mid-October appears to be the optimal time to use fraze mowing for rapid overseeding establishment. The following spring of 2018, there was no substantial visual difference in the bermudagrass recovery. In mid-June, all treatments had the same amount of bermudagrass growth, other than some small isolated patches of ryegrass in the verti-cut and control plots. We thank Redexim Turf Products for letting us use their Turf Stripper, and The Hogan Company for the perennial ryegrass seed donation. Matt Carpenter is from Lebanon, Tennessee. He earned his undergraduate degree in Plant Science from the University of Tennessee at Martin. His hobbies include fishing, watching college sports, and spending time with his family and friends. His Master’s Thesis Project is entitled Effects of Fraze Mowing in Fall Overseeding and Spring Transition. Committee Members include Barry Stewart, Jay McCurdy, Eric Reasor, and Richard Harkess (Mississippi State University). v
