An

Amazing Start to a

New Year! WOW!

What an amazing conference and tradeshow! Can I get an AMEN?! If you attended TTA’s 50th Annual Conference and Tradeshow, you’re well aware of all the great new things that happened. We had the largest attendance ever at a TTA conference! Whether you were sitting in a room getting educated on fraze mowing or witnessing a mock trial on the merits of bentgrass vs. ultradwarf bermudas, you were sure to notice the fact that you weren’t attending a TTA Conference like any other you’ve attended before. This didn’t happen without the hard work from the Education Committee, the Awards and Scholarships Committee, the 50th Banquet Committee and, most definitely, the very hard work from our new executive director, Shelia Finney. Many hours of very intense work took place by these individuals to make this conference, tradeshow and banquet the hug success it turned out to be. Also, with the addition 17 new vendors, our tradeshow was certainly a major highlight of the week. A big THANK YOU to all vendors who attended and supported the events of the week — nothing would have been possible without your support. I am so honored to serve as president of this great Association. Our immediate past president, Paul Carter, has left a couple impossible shoes to fill and has left us in an exceptional con-

io The miss

dition to surge forward and grow as an association with the finest group of turfgrass professionals in the nation. Paul, thank you for the last several years of dedicated service to the TTA! As you know, each year the membership votes in new TTA board members. This year, our ballot had 13 nominees; that’s the most I’ve seen since my time with TTA. Thank you to all who ran and for your willingness to volunteer for the betterment of the association. The six board members who were voted in are now starting their first year of their two-year term: Ryan Blair, Tim Long, Mickey Lovett, Mitch Parker, Jason Sanderson and Richard Pavlasek. The six board members serving the second-year of their term on the board of directors are Kurt Dryden, Doug Estes, Cal Hill, Joe Hill, Bill Marbet and Chris Sykes. The vice president’s position is being filled by Jason Pooler, and the secretary/treasurer position is filled by Doug Ward. Thanks to all of our board members for their volunteered time to make this association great. 2016 has gotten off to exciting start, and your TTA board has already started laying the footwork for 2017’s conference. I hope you plan to attend and bring a friend. Remember: Doers Do!

What a Way to

Kick Off 2017! I

must say that it was exciting to have the 50th TTA Conference and Tradeshow be my first conference as your TTA executive director. There were so many lessons learned quickly! We had more attendees and more vendor participation than we have ever had. Plus, planning a banquet was a new experience! And it was all a great success. All the hard work that the committees put into planning the different pieces of the entire conference was amazing to participate in — from the new venue of Embassy Suites, the fabulous education and the better-than-ever tradeshow. I have to say a personal thanks to the ladies at registration. Cindy Ray and Renee Hood made everything flow smoothly for everyone checking in. And The University of Tennessee students and faculty that headed up the audiovisual in the meeting rooms and handled the new process of scanning pesticide continuing education points did a wonderful job and were a huge help. As a part of the 50th Celebration banquet, I was honored to be able to announce the formation of the TTA UT Turfgrass Research Endowment. This gives all the members of TTA

the opportunity to be part of something special — making sure that our turfgrass research program at The University of Tennessee has the funds that it needs to continue to serve us. The endowment goes a step beyond making a contribution to the program. The endowment is an investment fund whereby the UT research team will be able to use the interest earned by the principle for turfgrass research. It will give the team a stable source of funding for many, many years. Your contribution to the endowment will never be touched; it will be the principle that earns the interest. Please join me in making a contribution to the endowment. In early March, we had our first full board meeting of the year with the new board members. I was also able to attend the first meeting of the Education Committee. Planning is well underway for the 2017 Conference and Tradeshow, scheduled for January 9–11 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. Again, there will be many exciting changes next year. We plan to make sure that you get the best experience that we can bring you, with great education, great tradeshow, great networking opportunities. It will be another “you can’t miss it” event.

FROM THE T VSTMA P resident

Thomas Trotter

Looking Back

on a Great Year! I

hope that everyone made it to the TTA conference, as it was one of the best events I’ve been able to attend. What an amazing job by all of those who spent so much time in the planning process! I don’t think the event organizers can be thanked enough for

the effort put into a show like that. It was great listening to all of the stories and memories of those involved since the group’s inception. As fun as it was to look back at the past, I am just as excited to look toward the future of the TVSTMA. This board is

committed to putting everything we can into making 2016 a great year. We have already been talking about some new ideas for upcoming events. We would like to have as much input as possible from the membership, so expect plenty of emails and phone calls! One thing I will focus on this year is membership involvement. I’ve been lucky enough to make some great connections through our organization, and I hope that we can continue to help others make those same types of connections. As we all know, most relationships begin with a simple introduction and a handshake. That’s why it’s so important to attend as many events as possible. I’m proud to say we have access to some of the best vendors in the country as well as some of the brightest minds in the turfgrass science community. Please take advantage of the opportunities to meet some of these great people. I guarantee you will not regret it. I’m honored to be able to serve a group that has helped me so much throughout the past seven years of my career. If there is ever anything I can help out with, please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone else on the board. We are here to serve you and hopefully make this one of the best years of the TVSTMA.

From the magc sa presid ent

Casey Nerren

Looking Forward to a Great 2016! The

2016 season is already here, and the MAGCSA board and I are very excited about the opportunities that await everyone this year. Our meetings will offer GCSAA points as well as valuable educational opportunities that benefit you as a professional and your club directly. The meetings begin in April at TPC Southwind and run through November, ending with our annual skeet shoot. We will not have a meeting in July since it is typically a busy month for us all. This year’s speakers include Chris Hartwiger with the USGA, William Brown with iTurf Apps, the UT

Turf and Ornamental Weed Science team and others. We encourage everyone to sign up your assistant, as well as invite another superintendent who might be interested in the educational and social opportunities that MAGCSA offers. New this year, we will be giving away prizes at the last meeting, rewarding those who participate the most. For those who qualify, three names will be drawn for first-, second- and third-place prizes. You must be present at five of the seven meetings to be eligible. We also will be introducing our nine-hole challenge following all meetings where golf is offered. The

format will be three- to four-man teams’ best ball. Teams will be selected at each meeting, and prizes will be given for first place and closest to the pin. You do not have to play with your teammates; you will be able to play with whomever you choose. Those wanting to play 18 holes can continue rounds following the ninehole event. The nine-hole challenge will provide a great opportunity to socialize with your vendors and other superintendents while enjoying a fun and competitive round of golf. No handicaps are needed, just the best golf game you can bring that day. This also provides the chance to see other courses and conditions that MAGCSA superintendents provide for their customers. Something we hope all the members keep in mind is that your membership is just as important as your participation. Over the last few years, membership levels have dropped for vendors and superintendent members. As the MAGCSA board, all we can do is try and provide the members with educational opportunities too good to pass up and social events that offer an environment for all to relax and enjoy. We hope these things have been accomplished by the schedule 2016 offers. The meeting location and speaker does not matter without the commitment from members to support the organization as well as themselves by the continuing education received at the meetings. We will reach out to all members, past and present, to make this year as successful as possible. In return, we hope all members will make the commitment to participate when able and ask your peers to do the same. The MAGCSA board thanks you for your participation and looks forward to a great year of meetings and camaraderie.

up coming event

Herbicide Resistance Field Day April 12, 2016 • 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. • TPC Southwind Golf Club • Memphis, Tennessee • Hosted by the University of Tennessee Turf & Ornamental Weed Science team in conjunction with the Memphis Area Golf Course Superintendents Association

The

Herbicide Resistance Field Day is an annual event hosted by members of the Turfgrass and Ornamental Weed Science team at the University of Tennessee. The event focuses on annual bluegrass control, considering that there are more cases of herbicide resistance in annual bluegrass than any other weed species in managed turfgrass systems. We will also discuss some of our ongoing projects focused on ultradwarf bermudagrass greens management this year. Education is provided using various field demonstrations. Lunch will be included as part of registration, and discounted golf on the TPC Southwind course will be available afterwards.

What you learn by attending

Herbicide Resistance Field Day attendees will: • Become aware of the current status of herbicide resistance in Tennessee turfgrass systems. • Understand the biological and economic implications of herbicide resistance in turf. • Learn about the benefits of developing annual bluegrass control programs integrating diverse weed-management strategies, particularly rotation of herbicidal modes of action. • See field plots presenting numerous PRE and POST herbicide programs for annual bluegrass control.

Attendance fees FREE for members of the Memphis Area

Golf Course Superintendents Association. Otherwise, $35 per person paid via cash, check (payable to MAGCSA) or credit card on-site. Individuals can also register online via the TGCSA website. You can read more about that here: www.tennesseeturfgrass weeds.org/Pages/Herbicide-ResistanceField-Day.aspx. All proceeds will benefit on-going herbicide resistance research efforts at the University of Tennessee.

How to register Attendees are encouraged to pre-register by April 5 by contacting Dr. Jim Brosnan (jbrosnan@utk.edu) or Shelia Finney (smfinney319@gmail.com). Registration fees will also be collected on-site via cash, check or credit card by the MAGCSA. T

Theo Lankford TTA Member Spotlight on

Kormac, LLC, and 2016–2017 TTA President

Company name and location: Kormac, LLC, in Brentwood, TN Job Title: Relationship Manager/ Sports Turf Manager How did you get started in the turfgrass industry? Well, in my senior year of high school (in 2000), I took a turfgrass-management ag class and have been working in it ever since. What did you do before your current job position? I started working for GreenLeaf Landscapes as their “lawn guy,” and then I went to work for Clarkland Sports Fields as a sports field manager. My last position was with Nashville Sports Leagues as vice president of athletic facilities. Who have been your mentors in the industry? Britt Sullivan, Billy Clark, Dr. Tom Samples and Korey Heightmen What do you enjoy most about your job? I love interacting with people. I get to meet a wide range of folks of many different demographics. I enjoy talking shop and seeing the results of hard work. How long have you been a member of TTA? Since 2002. How has TTA enhanced your career? 16

Since I didn’t attend college, TTA has been a large source of education for me. Attending conferences year after year and all the networking have provided several opportunities. What positions have you held in TTA? I was elected to the board of directors in 2011, and then as secretary/treasurer in 2012. In 2014, I moved up into the vice president’s position, and I currently serve as president.

overcame this by leaning on the people around me and trusting that they could take care of things when I wasn’t there. What have you learned by now that you wish you would have known early in your career? There are probably a lot of answers to this question, but the one that stands out the most is utilizing networking opportunities to learn and better myself as a professional. What are some of your favorite memories from your career? My most favorite memory is actually several different memories of watching kids play on the fields that I put heart, sweat and tears into, day in and day out.

What have been your contributions to the industry? In addition to my service with TTA, I also served as vice president and president of TVSTMA (Tennessee Valley Sports Turf Managers Association). I have taken a lot of pride in staying focused and learning as much as I can along the way and then teaching that process to others who have also chosen the same path.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy volunteering with my church, running in the park and being an active member in my local Free Masons Lodge.

Please tell us about a challenge that you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame it. I think the biggest challenge I have faced is finding the proper work/family balance. As VP of facilities at Nashville Sports League, I was responsible for 9 locations with 22 fields in constant 7-days-a-week play, so the job was extremely time consuming. Often, my family had to take a back seat to the demands of my responsibilities. I

Tell us a little about your family. My high school sweetheart, Alicia, has had my heart for almost 20 years, and we’ve been married since 2001. Alicia works with preschoolers with autism and loves every second of it. Our 18-year-old son Blake is a senior in high school and will be attending The University of Tennessee in the fall. Our 9-year-old daughter Mia is very happy to be in 3rd grade, and she enjoys dance. T

erbicides are chemicals that inhibit normal plant-growth processes, resulting in the death of susceptible weeds. The processes by which herbicides kill weeds are called modes of action, while the location where these effects occur at the cellular level is termed the site of action or the mechanism of action. The Weed Science 18

Society of America (WSSA) uses a numerical system to group herbicides by mechanism of action. A more detailed description of this numerical system is presented in Table 1. Continual reliance on herbicides that employ the same mechanism of action has led to the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds in turfgrass, as well as in other

agricultural systems. Developing weedmanagement programs utilizing herbicides that employ different mechanisms of action is critical to both preventing and managing herbicide-resistant weeds. It is recommended to rotate herbicides that employ different mechanisms of action as often as possible, as well as implementing cultural practices that

maximize turf competition and limit weed encroachment. Table 2 lists single active ingredient herbicides used in turfgrass by mechanisms of action group number. These WSSA group numbers can also be found on most herbicide labels (Figure 1). In turfgrass, multiple active ingredients are often sold commercially as pre-packaged mixtures to broaden the spectrum of weeds controlled by a single herbicide application. While these products are quite useful tools for weed control, they do not replace the need to rotate to herbicides with other mechanisms of action because active ingredients in these mixtures are often included at rates lower than what would be recommended when these materials are applied alone (i.e., not in a mixture). Table 3 lists example herbicides labeled for use in turfgrass that contain multiple active ingredients and the corresponding WSSA group number for each. Figure 2 is an example of how these groups may be represented on the product label.

TTA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Conference

Were a Huge Success! The

best-attended and most enthusiastically received TTA event in many years, the TTA’s 2016 Conference & Tradeshow was a roaring success in all ways. Held January 12–14 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro, the conference drew several hundred attendees to the educational program, and the tradeshow brought together a record number of exhibitors. Crowning the event was the filled-tocapacity 50th Anniversary Celebration Banquet, held Monday night, January 12. The evening began with a videotaped interview with Dr. Lloyd Callahan, who was hired in 1964 to lead The University of Tennessee’s first Turfgrass Management Research and Teaching program. Two years later, at the first UT Turfgrass Conference and Field Day, a unanimous

vote by attendees led to the establishment of the Tennessee Turfgrass Association. After an excellent banquet dinner served by Embassy wait staff, winners of TTA’s 2015 awards were announced, including an ovation-inspiring Distinguished Service award presented to UT’s Dr. Tom Samples. In honor of Dr. Samples’ decades of service to the turfgrass industry in Tennessee, TTA also announced the bestowal of his name to the association’s Professional of the Year Award, which was presented to 2014–2015 TTA president Paul Carter, CGCS. See page 26 for a full list of award winners. The evening proceeded with a panelist discussion of the history of Tennessee, moderated by 1986–1987 TTA president Frank Turner and UT’s Dr. John Sorochan. Panelists included 1979–1980 TTA presi-

dent David Stone (The Honors Course); 1990–1991 TTA president Jim Thomas, CGCS (TPC at Southwind); TTA advisory board member Bill Blackburn (Smith Turf & Irrigation); and Jim Kirkley. (former grounds manager at what sports field?). Concluding the banquet was a keynote presentation given by Phil Fulmer, former head coach of The University of Tennessee Volunteers football team from 1992–2008. Coach Fulmer punctuated his address with self-deprecating humor and fascinating memories of UT’s football history during his tenure. Additional highlights of the Conference & Tradeshow are featured in the next few pages of this issue of Tennessee Turfgrass. Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s event, scheduled for January 9–11, 2017, at Embassy Suites Murfreesboro. T

Dr. Tom Samples, honored for his decades of dedication and commitment to the turfgrass industry in Tennessee, received the association’s rarely given highest honor — the Distinguished Service Award.

During the celebration banquet, TTA Executive Director Shelia Finney announced the association’s new endowment endeavor to fund turfgrass research at The University of Tennessee.

Developed by UT’s Dr. Jim Brosnan, the conference’s education program attracted classroom-filling turfgrass professionals from across the state.

The tradeshow featured a record number of exhibitors who displayed their services and products during Wednesday’s five tradeshow-only hours.

Former UT head football coach Phil Fulmer delighted the banquet audience with his insightful and humorous keynote presentation.

Wednesday morning’s golf track featured a mock trial — “Bent versus Bermudagrass” — complete with a judge and “legal” proponents on both sides of the issue.

Kudos to the event’s tremendous success go to the primary planners (left to right): Theo Lankford, Celebration Banquet Chair and incoming TTA President; Shelia Finney, TTA Executive Director; and Paul Carter, CGCS, outgoing TTA President.
